While I have a Nikon DSLR, I highly recommend Canon point n shoots. They are the best.
-
You can do a ton with base model DSLRs to get you started while you learn, then you can move up to a more expensive camera. (Kinda like starting with a .22!) good lenses make more of a difference than camera body anyway. I shoot Nikon because I had Nikon film lenses, but Canon is great too. Check out http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ or http://www.adorama.com/ Those are my favorite places to buy from. They sell a lot used too.

Students with Learning Disabilities and Schools not geared to deal with them

And great job advocating for yourself, not being afraid to ask for help, and not being ashamed. We're all gifted in something, and we're all disabled in something! -
Students with Learning Disabilities and Schools not geared to deal with them
bluedog replied to a topic in General Chat
(Bias warning: I'm a special education teacher.) I understand what you're saying, but you've got your terminology a little mixed up. There are 13 federal categories of disabilities. One is Specific Learning Disability (which it sounds like you do not have.) Students with ADHD that significantly affects their ability to do well in school typically qualify for special education under the Other Health Impaired (OHI) category, not SLD. Questions: 1.) Should students with learning disabilities be held to the same academic standards as students without learning disabilities? Yes. By definition, students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have average abilities (IQ scores) but have deficits in one or more performance areas (reading, writing, math). It is often necessary to accommodate these needs by presenting the material in a different manner that allows the student to learn and display what they've learned. ADHD is not a learning disability, but yes, same academic standards. They take the same TCAP as the other kids. 2.) Should students with learning disabilities be held to the same learning and standardized testing procedures as the student's without learning disabilities? Procedures, testing format, time limits, environment? NO. Students who have a reading disability should not be expected to read a science or math test. Students who qualify for special education can have various testing accommodations by law such as extended time, read aloud, scribe, braille, small group or alone... 3.) Is it discriminatory for a school that expects students with learning disabilities to be able to do the same work, in the same manner as student's without learning disabilities? Same content, no. Same manner, yes. A common accommodation for students with ADHD is to shorten assignments (think quality work over quantity of work), provide extra time, or modify the type of assignment as long as the same content is being measured. 4.) Do you think schools (elementary, jr. high/middle school, high school's and colleges/universities) are adequately prepared to deal with students with learning disabilities? Oh, buddy, how times have changed since you and I were in school. If a K-12 student is struggling we test the heck outta them and have team meetings until we're blue in the face. Then if they do qualify for special education they have an Individualized Education Plan written for them. If they don't, they still have some sort of support team that makes sure classroom teachers are doing what they can in the classroom to make the student as successful as possible. 5.) Is is discriminatory that schools have not taken a different approach to how they educate disabled students? They have, all thanks to IDEA law. Unfortunately, that doesn't follow you to college and only applies to students in public schools through age 21. After that, you're covered by ADA section 504. I wanted you to be aware of these resources. There's a well-known and well-regarded advocacy website called Wrightslaw.com Here are some articles you might be interested in: College - Continuing and Higher Education - Wrightslaw.com Section 504 - Accommodations for College Students by Dr. Mike Brown - Wrightslaw Help! Tom, are y'all going to continue the GunTalkTV show? Really enjoyed that format and the training aspects of it, but haven't had any episodes show ip on the DVR lately.

I get that the gun market and advertising in it is a niche market, just wish that it wasn't Sig, Crimson Trace, Ruger, repeat. It'd be nice for there to be more critique vs. promotion, to hear pros AND cons about the products, but I recognize you have to pay the bills. Me too. I don't hunt so I DVR this and used to watch GunTalkTV when it was on since they're all I've found to feed my illness. I'm a fan, it just gets repetitive. I wonder if user name "Red Jacket" will pop up now that you've called him a moron ...?

Wanna hear the saddest part of this post? The guy who invented Doritos died today. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/arch-west-97-invented-doritos-for-frito-lay/2011/09/26/gIQAfYpE0K_story.html

He and his son have a show called "Guns and Gear" on Versus now... Very basic, very sponsor driven. Hickok45's videos are much better if you ask me.

He met some Dawgs today... Might be Georgia's only win of the season after the way they've played so far.

Just read Seal Team Six... It's no literary masterpiece, but it's a quick read and has some interesting insights. I'm looking for more to read too so I hope you get some good stuff.

Where were you on the morning of September 11, 2001?
bluedog replied to TGO David's topic in General Chat
In my second day of work at a Chick-fil-A west of Atlanta. I had just failed out of Georgia Tech and the girl I thought I'd marry had just dumped me. I was doing what I could to pick up the pieces of my screwed up life, living with my grandparents. I realized very quickly I had no right to pity myself. We didn't have a tv or radio, so our only news sources were phone calls and the few customers who came through. The place was dead. There was so much speculation and rumors were rampant. We put the massive flag at half-mast and closed the store early that afternoon. The memories that stand out to me were how quiet it was with no planes in the air, every tv and radio station was showing the news, every church had signs that they were open for prayer, the looks on the dust and ash covered faces of those walking home in Manhattan, and Bush and Giuliani's eloquence when we needed it the most. God bless America! -
I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip

No, but that's on my list of things to learn. Hope it's delicious. IPAs are my favorite.

Put him in a light box... that you don't mind being destroyed. I have so much respect for pet and children photogs. I've tried and failed many times.

I saw that today and knew the idiocy of Bloomturd's statement would get the collective blood boiling. Obviously the shootings in NYC are everyone else's fault. If what you're doing doesn't fix the problem, try even harder and blame others. That'll work.

Every gun is some type of compromise. For me, the 23 was the best all-around self-defense gun Or the money I wanted to spend. Small enough to carry, big enough to shoot well. As reliable as they come.

No, not bull$#!+, bull... Never mind.

My last trip out Parsons Branch I drove my 2wd GMC Sierra and had no problem, but it had been dry. It used to be closed often, so maybe call the Cades Cove ranger station before you go.
-
Just remember those roads are both ONE WAY out of the park. You'd have to drive into the cove around the loop to get to them. Your GPS might tell you otherwise. Doing both would take you all day. Parsons Branch is more narrow, but also more fun ( a little rougher). Rich Mountain has amazing views including a great shot of the cove and one of it's churches.
