I believe that there are two schools on this topic. Those who are wood guys and those who are gas/electric. I'm a wood/ charcoal guy and a snob about it. That said I received the Brinkman electric smoker as a gift and it is easy to deal with. I smoke small batches and rather infrequently I admit. But I use my Webber kettle grill weekly. It is a very sad situation. I grew up just outside Flint MI and that city has similar issues. Flint's nick name is Buick Town. The economies are based on the automotive industry. The reason I left in 1981 was there were no jobs. Flint had 25% unemployment at that time. These economies have been depressed for years.

Weight is a concern when BPing. That said I carry a Glock 9mm too. Only the gun and the loaded magazine. No additional ammo. Not need to have yet but... -
I started with a used lawn tractor that I purchased from a repair shop that I frequent. I learned quite a bit and dialed in on the features I wanted. Sold it for what I paid the next season. The size I ended up with is 42" with a floating mower deck. I bought a scratch and dent from Sears (craftsman). Happy with that. PS - there is a lot of good advice previous to my post. Budget makes a big difference.
