May I ask why ? The criteria you have set (nightstand gun, new shooter, easy to operate, easy to maintain, managed recoil from frame weight) seem to cry out for a revolver. Either way, yes, kudos to your sister for taking the step of becoming prepared to defend herself ! Yeah, don't be put off by buying pre-owned for your first gun. The primary criteria is function and reliability. My first "big boy" gun was pre-owned (a LEO trade-in gun) and I still have it. Sentimental value, but it also shoots good. As for the XD SC, I've got one and I love it. You will too.
