  1. As to your question I would add when training, have a 'spotter'. Someone that can make sure you are directing into the holster. Finger is indexed properly and off the frame, no clothing is in the way, and you are proceeding s l o w l y. Most NDs will occur on presentation or re-holstering. As Dolo said, dry practice is available at no charge.
  2. I recently joined. To me it is an insurance policy that I hope I never use. I looked at a comparitive chart and felt it was the best choice. In addition they have just established a relationship with Andrew Branca who is a nationally recognized 2nd Amendment attorney. From the personal accounts I have read they seem to be very helpful with 24/7 access.
  3. with you 100%. Some make the mistake of wanting to investigate what is going on themselves You made the best choice.
  4. getting started at a club match is different from a sanctioned shoot where rules are rules. Most local clubs try to adhere to the rulebook, but exceptions are made for new shooters. Don't let the rulebook keep you away.
  5. yep, had a dairy farmer friend that lost about 14 head to lightning standing in the staging area for the milking parlor
  6. They have them in KNoxville Have you tried ordering on-line from Academy?
  7. I've had mine 3-4 mos. Shot it quite a bit. Couple IDPA matches. Very accurate and totally reliable. Like it a lot, just not as well as my M&Ps. Probably will wind up letting it go to a more loving home.
  8. I've settled on the 1oz loads yrs ago. At 16 yd trap 8 or 7 1/2 is fine. At that yardage the federal are fine. Rio has a similar load and cost and same with Gun Club. Many a target has died to the 1100s
  9. I have no idea of their birthdays, but I do know they are very similar in size, weight , holsters, etc. Maybe S&W copied Taurus for a change? I did share my personal experience and have seen several other Taurus fall apart on the range. My opinion of their semi autos still stands.
  10. It is a clone of the Shield. First impression will be favorable. This is where it ends.....its a Taurus. I had one and it started light primer strikes, heck Taurus gave up on the fix and sent a new one which I sold. If you are buying a gun for SD then pay an appropriate amount of $$ for quality and dependability
  11. The LCP with a VC 'disappears'. Bigger is better and I routinely carry shield. Really like ease of putting it on and taking off without having to undress. 2 seconds either way.
  12. Yes, about 3 years worth with Shield. Warning is typical lawyer stuff. I have tried several other IWB for small Guns and always come back to VersaCarry. It is not convienent for multiple reholster but I try my to draw my gun multiple times every day.
  13. For what it is designed for very good . Not a range Gun but easy to carry with versa carry or nemesis in pocket holster
  14. blowing your gun up on the first fired round in any kind of Self-Defense situation is generally not a good idea. Neither is uncontrollable recoil. Whatever you load it needs to be reliable. If you need more power, go bigger gun. Read recently where a 9mm brought down a griz. Shot placement as always is king.
  15. Training for the fight and surviving is very, very important. This is the first real class that I have had that was Training to survive the legal battle that follows. Frankly it scared the out of me. Certainly anyone that carries a weapon or for that matter would consider deadly force anywhere needs this info. Well worth the money and is something that deserves more time and study.
  16. Might help in some situations, but the wad has a very poor relationship with shotstring and target. Practice with an experienced clays shooter or better yet an instructor will be more fun and productive. There are some very good shooters that actually can see the shotstring the majority of time. If they say you are behind and over.....you can take it to the bank.
  17. Everyone knows that a robbery will not happen because OC prevents crime, and especially does so when your weapon has a Hi-cap magazine sticking out of it.
  18. DaveTN, yes it is indeed how I teach my class. I didn't come up with this on my own. I have had many classes/instructors, some of 'fame', that highly encourage dry practice on a daily basis and have pulled the trigger quite a bit myself. I would bet many of the best competition shooters in the state do so as well, but I haven't surveyed them. Which has more wear on the gun simply doing a dry pull on the gun 1000 times, or shooting it 1000 times with 30,000 cup of pressure with each pull? There may be some wear&tear with both, but it is an excellent technique supported by many excellent instructors. If one chooses not to do so, or if your owner's manual says don't.....then don't. 'From Smith & Wesson FAQ Can I dry fire my S&W handgun? Q: Can I dry fire my Smith & Wesson? A: Yes, except for the .22 caliber pistols which includes models 22A, 22S, 422, 2206, 2214, 2213 and 41. .22 caliber revolvers such as models 17, 43, 63, 317 and 617 also should not be dry fired. Q: Why can't I dry fire my .22 pistol or revolver? A: Dry firing a S&W .22 pistol or revolver will cause damage to the firing pin.
  19. Your owner's manual should address dry practice with your firearm. In general dry practice (firing) should not be harmful to quality firearms. Many of the top shooters and trainers do so daily equaling thousands of pulls. If worried, use snap caps. Also make sure no live ammo is in the area, have a safe backstop or safe area, and avoid interruptions. Have a specific routine where you follow those rules and be safe.
  20. I honored the sign. Like always one can chose go elsewhere. I agree the sign law needs changed. The other thing I would like to see on a mail-out, email or a web site is official state communication with the public and instructors regarding carry laws. Especially when a new law goes into effect. Fortunately these laws are discussed and debated on TGO, but they are not necessarily known throughout the State. Individual research and interpretation is the main source of this information.
  21. Yep, but for some reason this one just threw me a curve....guess I got it confused with recreational facilities and some portions of gov'mt overstepping things. Part II is that I didn't know some of these smaller offices were now available to process new applicants. Sometimes I have to use TGO as a resource.
  22. So today I found that the TDOS has an 'outpost' off Gleason Rd. They will do new HCP, letting one avoid the hassle at the Strawberry Plains office. This builiding/door had a gunbuster sign per 1359. Unless there is a judicial proceeding or meeting, I was under the impression one could carry inside State buildings. Any thoughts?
  23. I wanted to share my experience regarding Apex Tactical. As many may know, this company is a source for after-market quality parts for several firearms, especially the Smith & Wesson M&P lines. I have installed several Action Enhancement Kits and triggers. Have been completely satisfied with results and any minor company support on technical issues. I have a M&P 5" Pro that I use for IDPA, etc. I thought I would install the semi-drop in barrel which requires 'a little' customizing. Well I had nothing but trouble....primarily mis-fires, lite primer strikes with factory and reloads. After several conversations with Apex staff they asked that I send the gun to them. They would 'make it right' and I would be charged for shipping and ammo only; no gunsmithing charges. So I did. Of course the M&P line was never known as an out-of-the-box tack-driver. The early models like mine were especially unkind to accuracy. My gun was in their shop for several months, and I imagine it was more difficult than most to rectify the issue(s). Anyway, it is my understanding they did a gunsmith fitted barrel, test firing, shipping and a T-shirt to boot all on their dime. They say you can't rush quality and below is the proof: this is at 25yds, machine rest, 10 shot, 1.56" group. Thanks Apex
  24. Ever wonder why many LE agencies/ FBI are going to the 9mm?
  25. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/11/us/woman-is-accidentally-killed-by-police-officer-playing-bad-guy-at-training-academy-in-florida.html?_r=0 In today's atmosphere of police shootings and with so many modern and safe training equipment how can anyone be so stupid? IMO this is totally inexcusable. Everyone including the police should know at least a couple of basic gun rules..1) Treat every gun as if it is loaded 2) Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy......Geezzzz. With simunitions, airsoft, or even painball guns as options how can this happen? Several heads should roll in this department.
