10Ring and Dave TN have it right. TN has 'Permitless Carry" which addresses this. 18 and older can possess a firearm in the automobile. This includes a handgun. It is not a matter of LEO discretion, it is a matter of TN law. If my adult daughter is driving a car, she will in all likely hood have a firearm in her car. Folks it has been this way for several years and is taught in the permit class. Additionally, your passenger compartment is analogous to your home. If it is breached, Castle Doctrine in applied. Note this does not mean if someone is beating on your car. Opening the door, breaking the window and then grabbing for you would be the threshold.

You must wait until you have your permit to carry legally. TN does not have a CCW. It is a HCP. As mentioned, you may legally possess a firearm in your vehicle in most places as you wait for your HCP.

I have had Colt, Sig, STI, Remington 1911s. I now have a Dan Wesson. Should have started there, wouldn't have needed to go through the time and trouble with the others.

I always send a pdf copy of the certificate to each student. I am pretty adamant that students keep records of all training. Some may be able to print your certificate before you leave.

School property is automatically illegal to carry, but MAY permit carry. If permitted, no signs have to be posted and all personnel, students and parents have to be informed of the policy.

The 2.0 trigger is an improvement over the 1.0 without doubt. I promised I would shoot my 2.0 for a good while before monkeying with parts.......promise broken. I put in the flat-faced, forward set trigger kit in this past week-end. Just wow! I have had at least a half dozen 'gun guys' try this trigger out, all with the same impression. What an improvement. Pull wt can be changed by reference to the Apex flow chart that accompanies the kit. Mine by trigger gauge runs 3.3#. One can bump it up to over 6. Very sharp trigger break, no creep, no stack. Great reset. Can highly recommend it, and yes there is a difference that is worth the money.

One can drive through Illinois with your handgun on a TN permit. Their law is very similar to our permitless carry. Review their laws, especially the statement from their republican caucus.

Locked inside the vehicle is fine, as long as it is out of sight. The method of security is simply a personal choice. Academy has several such cases which offer very good security with thicker cables. Certainly better than a glove box. If you are concerned about crossing state lines where your gun is not welcomed, a lockable case inside the truck is a must. Furthermore, no ammo in the gun or passenger compartment.

This is a smoke and mirrors bill. Call your representatives and ask for opposition.

Spock, I think you are reading too much into the school exemptions. There is no modification to standing law. One will not be permitted to carry on a campus. If one is carrying in a public park and an official school function is in progress, then you still will not be able to carry unless that specific TCA is modified, which this bill does not do. Still, IMO, this is a terrible bill that is trying to be a substitute for Constitutional Carry. We should have CC, and the current permit should be expanded to remove some restrictions that are still a burden.

Plenty of quality, well-tested factory ammo out there. Generally safest move is to use what local law enforcement uses. Why even allow a crack in the door to allow any room to question the ammo used? If it causes any question of your motive/intent/state-of-mind, don't take the chance. Worse case, factory ammo allows standard ballistic testing records that may help your case. Economics of reloaded ammo for SD is but a drop in the bucket compared to potential attorney fees. No use to re-invent the wheel here. As far as 'show me a case' where this is an issue; almost impossible as general testimony and its effect on the jury cannot be quantified. This issue would only be part of documented case law through an appeal specifically related to this subject. As far as I know and according to a leading SD attorney, no records of such an appeal.

I have attended several classes with CHL. Quality instruction by someone that has a proven performance track record. Both Randy and Lee are nationally sought after instructors. The only reason I am posting is that this is a bargain for a local, quality program that addresses topics directly related to the armed citizen. As Randy said, if you are wondering whether to attend I can definitely recommend signing up.

I am willing to give some basic instruction, but I do not baby-sit a shooter. The permit class is primarily on safety and the laws that deal with carrying and self-defense. In TN one can have a gun in their auto and home without a permit, but I simply cannot accept that I may enable someone to carry a gun that doesn't possess at least a minimum of basic gun handling and accuracy skill. For what it is worth, in the public, you, myself, and our families may be walking next to or down range from these people.

why? I argue with myself frequently about this. On one hand 'we' want constitutional carry. Stories like this argue against it as does my personal experience as an instructor. On the other hand, I feel more training is required. It comes down to the lack of personal responsibility, with or without a permit. Still no laws against stupid.

For my 2 cents, definitely stay with the LCP 1. It is a carry gun and chances are your shooter distance will be 3 yards or less. Does the “2” have improvements, yes. Necessary, no. As far as inexpensive guns; still a SCCY fan. Good article in the USCCA mag this month.
