What's your favorite mid-range rifle caliber?
Caster replied to JohnC's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I haven't seen anything the 308 Winchester doesn't do very well. I also like the smaller case as opposed to '06 length cases for cast bullets. I've tried a lot of things and just keep coming back to the 308. I don't have the opportunity or ability to get past a couple hundred yards or so; So anything more is a waste of materials for me. If the world falls to peices, we always talk of ARs and such, and do love mine, but the rifle I'll have with me to the end is going to be a bolt action in 308. I can put food on the table with it. With the array of loads I've developed, I can hunt just about anything. I've been working on a 100g cast plain base round nose running around 900 fps. Squirrels and rabbits beware. A 170g GCRN cast bullet at just over 2K will put down any deer, and a 180g partition will drop even the most stubborn of larger critters. Not that I expect to run into any. -
No crimp. Just close the bell. Also, stay away from the Lee Factory Cimp die with cast unless you're willing to go an extra mile or two. They WILL size the bullet down and cause fits of inaccuracy and leading. I use one but I have found a particular brand of brass (FC) and I also pull loaded rounds periodically and check the diameter. I've also used some diamond lapping compound to open up the carbide sizer ring another one and a half thousandths. This puts me right where I want to be for MY gun. Your mileage will undoubtedly vary. Crimps are WAY over used. There are VERY few reasons to crimp. Tube magazines and bottle neck cartridge auto loaders typically need a bit of crimp. Magnum revolver cartridges too for both boolit movement and helping ignition. I don't crimp anything for my .308 bolt gun for the most part. I don't crimp any of my 9mm loads. I only use the FCD to close the expanded case mouth and iron out the lower part of the case.

158g Keith plain base 9.0g unique LOTS of fun...cheap.

Some types are still hens teeth. Namely Unique. No easily found, and when you tell people I load 35 Remington and 308 Winchester with it, they get all stoopid looking.

....and we'll cover your front yard with empty Massengill boxes so the neighbors know what you are!

I'm 36 years old. I just shot some cast 308 loads using components given to me by a very good friend and upstanding member here. I used Winchester Staynless primers and 2400 powder. The powder was made before I was born and the primers....well, they were in WOODEN trays. Not only did they go bang but they were some of my more accurate loads to date using this particular boolit. ....oh yeah, the mold is older than me too!

I am a believer too but I think any reasonable, rational, half intelligent person here can agree; There are great many things we don't know, haven't been told and/or misunderstand. I don't believe things are cut and dry, black and white but we are not capable of handling the whole truth so we are give only that which we need. Solomon was possible the greatest human king to walk the earth but he was deeply immersed in the occult and knew many things that would keep the rest of us up at night. A far as spooks and ghosts and what not, my opinion can easily be turned back on me by some God hating atheist but....I want to believe in things like that. A part of me will hold out hope forever but I have no proof of such things and despite many unexplainable things I've seen, I'm not of the opinion a dead soul had anything to do with any of it. -
Ohh that is wicked!

How do you use air?

Upon further consideration, this seems to be the best choice. If one could get with an Entomologist, breed a large batch of these little fellars, then hunker down for a few days while they get to work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermestidae

Quality engraved ejection port / dust covers?

These guys are awesome. They did mine and I am very happy with it. They can do both sides and will engrave anything...if it'll fit. Very reasonable prices and turnaround time. http://www.harengser.com/store/products.php?cat=11 They engraved mine, on one side says 'in nomine patris, et filii' and the other side says ' et Spiritus Sancti' It looks perfect. Ohh, and they will engrave your cover but its much easier to buy one of theirs and have them engrave what you want. -
Lots of awesome dads on this forum. Several pretty lil gals puttin meat in the freezer, that's just awesome. Another block in the wall of self reliance makes LADIES not girls. Big difference.

Damn, I bet it got warm. -
If I'm in bed, its on the nightstand. If I'm in the shower,it's on the sink next to the shower. Other than that, it's on my right hip. Some call that paranoid. Maybe, but I'm happy.

The greatest thing I did was to stop using Galco leather and move to a plastic Serpa. The Serpa is much more open and allows the weapon to breathe. I use the Galco Fletch High Ride for going out and when I have to put on my Sunday Go To Meetin' clothes. Which ain't often.
