Every time I turn around, somebody is 'Gonna take our guns away' Not to be rude to the OP, but I'm bored with it. Some days I just wish they'd try. They will someday, but they KNOW now is NOT the time.

Death tax. Only in Amerika does one have to PAY for the privilege of dying.

Shot it today and got it sighted in. It holds zero VERY well. Cheek weld is a bit high, but tolerable. Able to shoot with both eyes open easily, that's a plus for hunting if I ever take a notion. Accuracy was good, all things considered. Clays @ 50 yards don't stand a chance.

Yeah, they're just pictures taken by no telling who and developed at a photo hut somewhere nearly two decades ago. Thanks though, I didn't know that.

Cool, thank you. Funny their website says choosing the right kind of scan can be confusing, feel free to call. NO KIDDING! I'll give them a call next week. Thanks again Steelharp.

I dunno squat about pictures and the like. How would one go about taking an old photo and have it copied. I don't have the negatives. I can scan it obviously, but I mean a VERY high quality copy. I don't mind paying for it. They were printed in the early 90's, taken with a 35mm. If I wanted to get a super high quality copy, and have it blown up bigger, where'd be the best place around Nashville or Franklin to do that? It's worth the $$$ to me to get it done. I found some pictures of my wife when we were in high school. Damn was she stupid, she could have done SOOOO much better than what she ended up with[me]. I wouldn't mind getting it framed nice to hang up in my reloading shop. Thanks.

Wow, really? Oh wait, why am I surprised.

Open carry triggers business to post gun buster.

Well, I'll help you figure it out ole boy. Mark me in your book as stupid. Almost as stupid as mixing handguns with beer. -
Long term storage of ammo *My solution*

Oh snap! I meant to post too, I just got back from shopping. I bought 500 bags for less than 8 bucks at Sam's Club. They are heavier paper than the dollar store bags. -
Long term storage of ammo *My solution*
Caster replied to Caster's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Certainly it would work. I wanted to keep quantities small so the packages could used in a dispensary fashion. In other words, I can pull a pack and go shoot, toss one to a buddy, trade two for some meat, tuck three in a day pack.............. I would say you could wrap a hundred or more, it all depends on the amount of patience you have. -
Good bye burnurmom.

Long term storage of ammo *My solution*

I hate printers. I ran over the last one with a friends 90hp Ford tractor. The wife doesn't like me using the new one. -
I agree 110%

NO, not hard at all. Certainly not cheap but easy to find. Here's the Goex® Back Dawg ammo I was talking about. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/559254/goex-black-dawge-black-powder-ammunition-45-70-government-405-grain-lead-flat-nose-box-of-20 I'll bet you my hat that David {DLM} here can get you a deal on some. If it related to ammo the man can find ANYTHING!

So I know I'm not the only one ferreting away ammo for SHTF. When we store this particular ammo we know it may not see the light of day for many moons. For that we all agree military steel ammo cans are best. Air tight and built like a tank. BUT, how do we store them inside? Well, for ammo I KNOW I am going to shoot in the near future I just dump it in there. THe exception being my precision loads and those go in plastic ammo boxes to prevent damage. Wouldn't we all love to keep all our ammo in plastic containers but they don't fit well in ammo cans. Not efficient use of space. Well, I was pondering this as I cast some 158g RN for .38 today. I thought of our beloved Comm-Block surplus ammo. Much of it is stored in small quantities, wrapped in brown paper. BRILLIANT! WTSHTF we don't want to have loose ammo in cans. If you have to barter, do you really wanna grab a handful or ziplock bag? No. So I came up with this idea today for .38 special. It isn't anything special [Ha! pun intended] but it works perfect! You'll need a paper lunch sack, some scrap cardboard, masking tape, scissors and 56 rounds of .38 SPL. Cut two squares of cardboard that fit tight in the bag. Using one of the squares as a guide, cut off the top of the bag a piece the same size as the squares to use a divider. Place one of the squares in the bottom of the bag and then lay two rows of 14 rounds, tightly laced. Like so: Using the part of the bag you cut off, lay it on top of the rounds and lay two more layers of ammo. Then top it off with the other piece of cardboard. Taking care like wrapping a Christmas present, fold the bag over itself tightly and tape it shut. Write your info on the tape in ink and viola! A perfect dispensary pack of .38 ammo. I dunno how this is going to work out with 9x19, .45acp ECT but I'll let you know when I try. They almost have the look of old surplus ammo, huh? They sure fit snug in the can. Just what I was wanting. WooHoo! ....yes I DO have a lot of time to ponder silly things.

There are smokeless loads for that gun, I can't remember but it seems like pressures < 18K PSI. I know my Accurate manual lists "Trapdoor Only" loads. GREAT CARE must be taken though as these are very weak actions when compared to other rifles. Black Dawg makes black powder factory made ammo that will good to go.

Ha! I knew DLM would know what I'm talking about! I have it on good authority that green bar printer paper works very nice too. The kind with the holes down both sides. I have to get a proper sizing die first as the bullet must be sized to just over BORE diameter before patching. My Savage model 10PC is going to be the first to run paper. I gotta, get me some cerrosafe and take a chamber and throat casting. I think I'm going to need a .302 sizer for the bullet and a .309 sizer to siize the patched bullet. The savage should be pretty impressive, it's very accurate. I'm hoping to get a 180g cast bullet up around 2600-2700 fps. That should be devastating to hunt with.

BUT, you can paper patch a spitzer too, soo....then again, this ain't for the normal shooter. As far as the link you mentioned, that forum is the ABSOLUTE BEST source of info on reloading and casting the interwebz has to offer. The amount of information there is a bit daunting when you first dive in. The things some of these guys know and do will make you re-evaluate how much you think you know. I have learned MUCH from there including but certainly not limited to, the perfect lube recipe [that I now make myself, never again will I buy bullet lube] A better way to tumble lube where it goes farther and isn't sticky and paper patching. Anyone who's interested in things I talk about NEEDS to go there and do some reading. It's the only other forum I frequent.

You can find an old school bus cheap. It wouldn't even have to run if a wrecker bill wouldn't be too expensive. Dig you a trench, irrigate it very well. THEN, bury it. A school bus is designed to support a good bit a weight in the event of a rollover. It will take a 24-36 inches of dirt easily. I'd take the wheels off once in position to prevent settling off level. A gutted school bus has a LOT more room than you think, especially if you link a few together.

Just hit the nail with a sledge hammer! If you think a woman in a shoe store or an old man at a used car lot kickin' tires is bad.....There's NOTHING or no one any harder to please, more anal, stubborn and generally preferring to stand around humhawing with their thumb up their butt than a guy buying a gun in a gun shop. There are people who spend less time deciding over which HOME to buy than people with guns. I hate shopping for guns because of the other customers. I make it a point to call around for availability and be ready to buy the instant I'm there and have it in my hands. Some people will stare at a gun forever, leave, come back and stare some more. Like it's going to grow breasts or make them a cup of coffee if they stand there long enough. I HATE rude salesmen. It should never happen...but, YOU deal with the public sometime. I don't blame them sometimes.

Yeah but they were talking about paper patching a jacketed bullet. It can most certainly be done with ZERO loss of accuracy. You have to size the bullet down and then patch it back up. The rifling engraves on the paper, the paper presses into the bullet but the marks left are not discernible in any way unless the star ship Enterprise shows up with their computers. I would say patching with a cigarette roller wouldn't be the best idea. The patch has to be wet when you wrap it. If not, your results will not be good. Plus it would be difficult to get the right tension in a cig machine. Somethings just can't be done any other way than by hand.

The worlds first jacketed bullets were paper jackets. Not copper. Paper patching along with smokeless powder allows one to use a cast bullet at jacketed velocities. There are folks P/Ping in the 3000 fps range. You can run a dead soft bullet at 2K easy enough. After that the lead needs to be a bit harder but not for the same reasons standard cast bullets do. At high velocities soft lead will bend and deform. The nose will slump and that'll make it wobble and accuracy is out the door. Also, there is no fouling with paper, at least not as we know it. The only fouling you get is powder fouling from the last shot. The paper will remove all traces of fouling from the previous shot. There's a two fold blessing there. An unlubricated patch will lap a rough bore to a mirror, but the unlubed patch will generate heat very quick. 10-20 rounds and accuracy suffers from heat. A lubed patch solves that. This is a serious game, paper patching. This is one of the deepest caverns of the reloading rabbit hole and not one to take on lightly or uninformed. Thus my lingering hesitation to start said endeavor. It is by far one of the more labor intensive crafts of our hobby. In the time you take to load a thousand 223s on your Dillion, one could roll and load 50-100 PP loads. The pride and accuracy is where it's at though. There's lots of benefits. A soft lead bullet at high velocity is devastating. For any of a nefarious mind, the paper separates at the muzzle (when done proper) making the bullet virtually untraceable. That's more a bit of trivia than a bonus. I'd say one of the more fun of benefits would be the duh factor as people try to comprehend how you manged a sub MOA group at a few hundred yards, easily done if all your ducks are in a row.

I've been on again, off again getting things together to paper patch for 308. Just curious if anyone does any smokeless paper patching.

Open carry triggers business to post gun buster.
Caster replied to Tncobra's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
There's a time and place for everything, but the time and place for open carry rarely comes along. Everyone is CERTAINLY within their right to do so, I will not say nay against it, but it's idiocy to me. Why start a confrontation, scare the sheep, or cause uneducated people to make rash decisions. What forward movement have you made there? I'm first to admit I have been and will continue to be a touch hypocritical on open carry as I will [as inconspicuous as possible] switch to open carry when I sense a tremor in the Force, but NEVER inside a business. Really guys, what good does it do? Your right to do so set aside for a moment, what GOOD does open carry do for anyone? IMHO .....none.
