This is a video of a 300 whisper (300blackout's father if you will) and a coyote. Not a work safe or children safe video. ....and I am NOT a big fan of shooting animals I don't intend to eat but it shows just how effective the round is. It tore his butt up! A shame really, but that's a personal opinion. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa3V5tZXT7U

....and let me go back the cartridge you have on hand. What twist rate is you current upper? You know why some complaints are made about the 223's effectiveness? What do you expect a 55g FMJ to do??? We are not bound by the Hague convention ( it isn't the Geneva convention like some think) you can use anything the market offers. If you're running a 1/9 or faster twist you should be running a heavier bullet. I'm not a fan of super heavy stuff in super fast twists but a 60-75g vmax or Amax is devastating. Nosler makes a 60g partition that will expand and penetrate deep without fragmenting. The options are overwhelming. Most of the 223 haters probably have never experimented with anything more than some cheap ass brown bear russin junk. I would have no qualms about using my AR and say a 62g Barnes TSX for deer.

...and as far as the truck gun part? Lock your truck, secure the weapon out of sight. Be mindful of where you park. Get creative and build you a lockable "behind the seat" case that you can open quickly. The theft part boils down to something me, you and everyone else should be diligently doing everyday any way. Keep your mind on the here and now and pay attention to where you are and what you are doing. That lesson isn't just for Jedi ya know!

Keep what you have, learn to use it well and take great care of it. It'll be there for you. Get you a mason jar and start saving. Then buy you a 300 blackout upper. All your magazines and bolt carrier group will work. Properly loaded the 300 blackout will perform as well as any 30/30 within certain limitations, namely cast bullets. Nothing bests the 30/30 for cast bullets. Trust me, a 150g Hornady SST loaded over a healthy charge of Lil'gun will put a deer in his grave...errr uh, your hungry belly lol. Get another mason jar and do as Dolomite said and get you a 22 or upper. The modular system will allow you have many more options. If you need more punch it's out there. You don't need 308 for modest TN ranges. The 6.8 SPC, 458 SOCOM, 6.5 Grendel and a few others all fit in the platform you already have. AND THEY WORK WELL. Though pricey on ammo if you don't reload, the 6.5 Grendel will take deer at pretty much any range ole Spots will ever be hunting. ....and if it'll take a deer, it'll take down those pesky bipedal long pigs too. I may not have served my country and seen combat but I've shot enough to know, those who say the AR is a problem have nev shot one, use cheap garbage rifles and parts or are too stupid to do a little maintenance. IMHO, they aren't 'high maintenance' either. I mean, God forbid a man break his rifle down, clean and grease/oil that stupid thing once in a while!!!

How much is too much to pay for ammo right now?
Caster replied to LowBb's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Fair price for primers is about $40 /K. Fair price for an 8lb jug of Titegroup is around $140 A good Lee mold can be had for less than $30 but if taken care of doesn't add to the cost of ammo because it'll last foreve dies and press are the same school of thought. Tumble lube is about $5 per bottle. Add $15 to that for some Johnson's paste wax and odorless mineral spirits so you can make a batch of 45/45/10 tumble lube. That $20 will tumble at least three to five thousand depending on how much you waste. SO! That's a penny each for powder, four cents for primer, and about half a cent each for lube. Rounded up to six cents and your looking at about $60 per thousand. That's what I'll pay for ammo. No more. -
Catching Brass...Anybody Have a way to do this?
Caster replied to Randall53's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Bolt actions, lever actions and revolvers.............just sayin' -
After all this, you HAVE to post a full page review with lots of photos. From YOU, we expect NO less. LOL.

Ohhhh. Same on me for assuming. I have a bad habit of assuming everyone reloads. Sorry. I'd be calling Grafs and complaining then.

Keep swingin' Don. Hang in there and don't give up! You have to make a full recovery for many reasons but if for no other reason, it's a moral imperative, you gotta find what's responsible for killing your chickens and ultimately led to this unfortunate injury. You gotta track it down and make it pay the ultimate price.
-
They're PPU cases which should N/C boxer primed. For the price of a primer, 'I' wouldn't leave anything to chance.
-
Oh heck yeah. Done told the wife, that's what I want for Christmas this year.
-
I would stop shooting that stuff and tear it all down. Reprime and charge with a new, fresh, known powder and reseat. IF, you were to do just what has happened AND then the powder ignite, you'd have a SEE condition. 'Secondary Explosive Effect'. It's rare but BAD. Basically, the primer shoves the bullet intot the bore before ignition and the bullet then becomes a bore obstruction of sorts. I have seen 98 mausers in pieces over such and the 98 is a tank! Be safe, and stop now. The brass and bullet is good, start over.

Pitch it. How bad do you really need ONE round of 38 special. If its part of dedicated lot of brass tear it down and start over.

Well being as you posted in the "long guns" section, I'm assuming you weren't looking for handgun suggestions. If I were dreaming I'd likely go for a Montana Rifle Company XVR in .35 Whelen. It's stainless, synthetic [you're gonna want that in Alaska!] and my shoulder cannot handle the bigger powerhouses anymore since I injured it but the 35 Whelen is manageable and MORE than enough if you put the bullet where it needs to go. Price tag of $1400 is a very reasonable price considering what you get. It is fitted with iron sights which is another prerequisite to back up a scope out there. http://www.montanarifleco.com/custom.rifles.html I will say everyone is right to suggest a large caliber handgun as a side arm. In that case I'd say a reasonable revolver in NO LESS than .44 magnum, preferably a .454 Casull or larger. Since we're dreaming here I'd put in for a Hamilton Bowen built M1917 Redhawk in .50 AE. I'd have it built on a stainless action though. Only problem with this handgun is the price is north of 4K and a year wait. http://www.bowenclassicarms.com/gallery.html

How Long Have You Had Your TN Handgun Carry Permit
Caster replied to runco's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Going on 14 years. -
Almost every catholic I've ever met has been a grit person. Generally they are grat people. Having said that, I have nothing but derogatory comments about a MAN who takes a position that high. NOW! If they had consulted ME on who to elect as pope, I'd have chosen different:

Good load for 357 mag with lead cast bullets for a rifle?
Caster replied to jeff43's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
My best load for rifle ( I don't actually own a rifle, but I load them for a close friend and he LOVES them) Would be a Lee 358-158-SWC, with a Hornady gas check, my own recipe for lube, sized .359, CCI magnum primer, RP brass and 15.0g of H110. Thats the starting charge for a 158g jacketed bullet that should give a little over 1600 fps. Imagine the cat bullet velocity might be a tad less as resistance and pressure are lower with lead. Accuracy is excellent out of a Rossi lever gun. -
No, I don't believe it will work. They are length specific. The collet inside is closed by the pressure of the shellholder. if you were to use a 308 crimp die on a 30/06 you would not have the base of the ram in contact with the collet before the shell bottomed out. The other way around and the crimp die wouldn't be anywhere near the case mouth when the ram contacts.

I haven't got a suppressor for my Savage yet but it has been a blast to work with. By far the easiest to get results of any rifle I've ever had.

Home made body armor, amazing
Caster replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
THe science is Newton's third law of motion. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. It's what tells us that hollywood is BS. When someone shoots someone and it blows them off their feet??? For that to happen the recoil would be equal to that. I know nothing of physics but I would say the reason you felt such an impact is the equal amount of force being focused into such a small area. ...but what do I know. -
