  3. My cousin told me his dad was the original Boss Hog of Hazard Ky which is about 35 miles north of Harlen County. He was there around 1942 to 51. The coal wars spilled over into Letcher and Perry County, where Hazard is located, as well. My uncle owned a pool room in Hazard, and killed a drunk man who drew a handgun on him in the pool room, years ago. He shot the man in self-defense, but my uncle Claude Reed had to leave to keep the dead guy's family from killing him out of revenge. There was not much law around there during the early/mid 40's. My dad told me the Sherrif was about all the law they had back then, and they generally just came by after the shooting was done and helped clean up the mess during the coal war period and after wards. Said many were corrupt. Most people in Eastern Ky just took care of things themselves until the early 50"s. My cousin told me his dad ruled Hazard with an iron clad fist and the pool room was his place of business. Cousin Jack said his dad carried, and had close to him 2 SW and 1 Colt Revolvers during that time. He sold his business, including 3 working moonshine stills, for a considerable amount of money in the early 50's and moved across the road from where we lived at the time in Camargo, in N E KY in 1953. My uncle moved to Morning View in W Ky, a few years later, and lived there till he passed. Many said one of those revolvers saved his life that night. Like I stated previously, revolvers have been close to me in every serious situation that I have ever been forced to react too. I never felt unprepared in a single one of them. Now my time in Vietnam was different, although I was never in combat that the VA will recognize. I was on the perimeter backing the Marines, dug in a fox hole in a second line of defense for 3 weeks, during the Teat Offensive of 1968. It was quite a show as "Charlie" overrun the North end of the base, and I was on the West end. We could hear small arms fire coming from the Flight Line and several heavy charges destroying fighter, helicopters, and bomber aircraft less than 800 feet away. I was 19 at the time and that is where I became a man. Not many people can say exactly when the grew into a man, but I can. I viewed a lot of the Pilots carrying SW 38Spl revolvers ever day during 67/68. Edited to add; My father said his brother was as about as crooked as they came during those times. Was involved in a lot of lawlessness.

  10. I’m looking to add another birth year Marlin to the stable. The Model 1894 was re-released in 1969. I had one from 1976 but sold it recently. If anyone has one from 1969 they want to let go or if you hear of one or see one, please let me know.

  11. This want is still there. If any of you all run across a Marlin 1894 made in 1969, please feel free to let me know. A 1969 (up through 1971) 1894 will have a saddle ring. The serial number will start with 69. The serial could be on the top or the bottom tang depending upon when in 69 they were produced. If early 69, made in New Haven, it should be on the bottom tang. If late 69 made in North Haven, it should be on the top tang.

  13. I think the only difference is that the Senior Sportsman includes WMA access and the Senior Hunt/Fish/Trap does not. You could call them and ask. (615) 781-6500

  14. Maybe he should worry more about real criminals instead of regular people- These putzes's are continually finding things to blame us with while completely ignoring the real criminals out there- These idiots really get under my skin-they must just sit home and think of stupid things to make illegal- If my car is locked it is now a secure container-unless it's broken into which now makes it a crime-against the person doing the breaking-not the vehicle owner-

  15. It's a tough question of course, but I would have to say my second favorite is this Les Baer .45 factory built on a Strayer-Voigt (aka Infinity) double stack 2011 frame. They did a few limited runs of these in the late 90s/early 00s timeframe for a distributor called CFI. They pop up from time to time on Gunbroker and I kept my eyes open for about 10 years before this one came along. The idea of a tight, super accurate Baer gun built on the double stack frame (that is lighter than the steel Para P14s of the time) seems like an awesome combination to me.

  17. I don't see myself walking away from revolvers anytime soon. This is my current favorite, a Model 25-5 in .45 colt, packed around in a Simply Rugged Alligator skin pancake.

  19. Remember this great quip by the " Father of the Gunsite Academy ", the great Jeff Cooper:.... They ( the SAA, DA Revolver, or 1911 ) are all the same til the first reload. Armed citizens rarely find themselves in " reload gunfights. A finished revolver man, nomatter the flavor of revolver, is a thoroughly dangerous man, and is quite capable of stopping multiple threats. The " high capacity spray n pray approach is overrated. leroy...

  20. My grandfather was a mechanic for the coal company in Louellen KY, in Harlan County. He died in 1942, of a staff infection. My Aunt used to tell me stories of the Harlan County War between the Unions and the companies. I have his Browning Belgium Auto-5 12ga shotgun.

  22. Where was that? My grandfather was heavily engaged in the coal mine wars in Harlan county, KY.

  23. That’s cool, you might enjoy the story of my own model 1905, 4th change. It was purchased for self protection during the bloody coal mine wars by my great/great grandfather. He was the county judge among other things back in those days. It passed from grandfather to me back about 12 years ago. It’s a .32-20 model, managed to swing a few cowboy ammo boxes for it over the years, but slowly been gearing up to reload the caliber.

  24. Now the good news, calling the marketing department got the deal done. Finally approved and a return phone call after leaving a message last week. Check arriving in 6 - 8 weeks. I'm glad, I like their firearms so much I don't want to have a bad taste in my mouth with them.

  26. Thanks everyone for your input. I got the Canik Mete MC9 for $350 out the door and it has been great so far. Recoil is a lot less snappy than I was anticipating for such a small package!

  27. Still hunt with my T/C Renegade .50. Bought it new in the late 70's and killed a lot of deer with it. Been through all the new fangle in-lines, and sold them all a couple years back forcing my hand to use only the T/C. Glad I made that decision because I'm having fun going back "old school" in black powder. My go-to load is 90 grain GOEX FF behind a 385 grain Hornady Great Plains bullet. Get nothing but shoot throughs with that load and my, what an exit hole. BTW, my barrel is also a 1:48 twist. Works well for about any projectile, even round ball.

  28. All depends where you sell it, or try to sell it I should say. There are TGO prices, which are usually fair, realistic prices ... and then there are the inflated stupid prices on the big sites like Gun Broker, Arms List, etc. For the most part, us TGO folks are looking for a bargain always, but also willing to pay a "reasonable" price for something we really want. I have a CZ 550 in 6.5x55, it's not for sale, but if it was, I would hope to move it on TGO for around $800 without a scope. Which btw you can buy a new CZ 600 LUX for that. No way would it be worth $1200 in my opinion. But crazy prices seem to be the norm right now, especially on sites that have bidding wars.

  29. Looks like a modified Snider-Enfield rifle. At some point it lost its original rear sight and a few other bits. I suspect that its either Egyptian or Pakistani from the markings. Edit: There's one on Gunbroker that looks very similar, according to that listing its a shotgun conversion of an old Snider-Enfield and used by the Egyptian police. In any case, its a cool old gun ... https://www.gunbroker.com/item/896481015

  33. I love me a good wheel gun. I like to carry a S&W 38sp or a Chater Arms Bulldog 44sp. I can draw the S&W faster than any handgun I own. "I can put two in your guts before you can clear leather with 9mm race gun". The 44sp is just big and loud. The only problem is the lack of ammo capacity. So, I carry a P-365 as a backup.
