It's been a while for an update. Tumors are caused by a cancer. The head doctor sent me to West clinic to be checked out. Since I was having a hard time eating a Petz tube was implanted. That took 4 months, 5 hospital visits for the right doctor to get it done. More doctor and hospital bills. West clinic doctor says I have esophagus cancer. I could get food to where the cancer is located, but not into my stomach. Finally got a Petz scan and a port in my left should for infusions. They started every 2 weeks at the first of December. My first meal I could eat was New Years Day, peas, cabbage, ham hock and cornbread. Tiny bites and lots of chewing to make it fine. Soak the cornbread in the peas made it easier. I ended up cooking 3 pans of cornbread and 3 pots of peas. Friday, with lots of snow coming down I cooked a pot of mild chili and more cornbread. No problem eating, just small bites and lots of chewing. 2- 2 quart containers in the freezer and 2 in the fridge after I had 2 bowls for dinner. I finished off the fridged one's last night. Monday I'll go to West clinic for my 5th infusion. They start about 9 or 10 am and finish about 4 pm. I wear a portable IV pump home and a return visit to have it removed 2 days later. Both days wear me out. I'm not ready to do anything until Saturday or Sunday. The first visit of December I was down to 99 pounds. I'm up 120 today. Weak, I do very little around here and lots of naps.3 points

Birchwood pike is just up the road from me here in Harrison. It has a good deal of diversity as you drive one end to the other. Not too uncommon here in the county where you’ve got some nice homes on land mixed with trailers. It’s a major thru way, heavier traffic than most and has more than its share of crime. just a couple miles away, it’s much quieter without any incident to note. I don’t know if it’s just me, but that mug shot screams crazy old curmudgeon. Doesn’t it? Maybe ahead of the curve at 56.2 points

Stand by for date, original date won't work. So I want to put together a big event where we can all show off our bbq rigs, eat some good smoked meat, and bang some steel after the meal. I'll smoke ribs, chuck roast and a pig butt on the smoker. Feel free to bring sides and non alcoholic drinks to contribute. Open carry of fancy leather and engraved pistols is encouraged. Bring out your best. After a big meal of smoked meat and sides we can retire to the back field to bang some steel with pistol and rifle. Address will be posted at a later date or sent via PM. It's in Oliver Springs. Please no alcohol or drugs, they have no place around loaded firearms.1 point

Sorry about the Zombie thread, but I submitted my proposal for the district’s firearms education curriculum for next year. Thought I’d share if anyone was interested or has the ear of a decision maker. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1axDVoBD4jDyEKCJ9KsQ5SVfSdkj3wbPH81y_xFeHtfQ/edit1 point

On the last head doctor visit I was shown the MRI taken that morning. The tumor is gone. I can't do much since the wife keeps the house cold. Only 2 places I can stay warm is the bathroom and bed. With the weight loss and chemo I stay cold all the time. I'm sleeping in fleece pants and flannel shirt, on an electric mattress pad set on 5 and under an electric blanket set on 3, sometimes I wake up cold and increase their heat. My son bought an electric heat throw on the first chemo treatment and it help a lot while taking the drugs. My hands stay white and cold, my feet stay cold.1 point
-
I'm glad you've been able to find things you can chew enough to eat and swallow so you could get some weight back on. It sounds like the chemo days, and the days that follow, are rough & exhausting. I hope the treatments are working and your tumor is shrinking and going away. Please keep us posted.1 point

I appreciate that! I’ve had the benefit of shooting a couple R8’s, enough to have one on my bucket list. Haven’t had the pleasure of handling a 327PC yet. I’ll reach out if I ever make it up that way…thank you for the offer.1 point

I have holster mounted to the walls in my cabinet, in the kitchen, and have others stashed in areas we spend most of our time. One is within arm's reach of "Big Red" all the time. Big Red is the name my grandson gave my Lazy Boy. Like I stated I do carry on person after getting dressed. I have these guns for me when I am in my PJs, and for the misses as she does not carry on person although she has her CCP. She carries when we travel in our RV. It is a personal thing, stashing firearms. We are empty nesters. Edited to add; I will say the best thing to do is to harden your entry to your home before anything happens. I have also lit up the outside of our home really well and keep lights on, at night, both inside and outside. All my windows have storm windows plus the house windows have nails on each side of the middle divide that can only be removed from the inside. We also have added hardened Larson triple lock storm doors with substantial locks and double pain glass with the 3M in-between the double glass panes so one can't bust through the glass to enter. All this is done so if a determined intruder tries to force entry, they will need to make a lot of noise so my little yappy dog will wake us and "HOPEFULLY" we will have a little time to prepare. Also installed a driveway alarm that chimes when cars come up our long driveway. This plan is better than no plan at all. It cost real money and takes a lot of labor to really harden one's home. I look at as investment in personal safety, but IMO it is necessary this day-in-time. My experience of being chased/attacked in my front year, by 3 thugs, a few years back, gave me a whole new perspective. Young men beating up old physically impaired men. Don't want it to happen again, if I can help it. YMMV1 point

I hope no one takes this wrong and I am not trying to be argumentative. But, other than OC being your right and for some wanting to promote fear in the ‘Karens’ I really want to understand and am interested in your reasons for a preference to OC.1 point

Staging is intimately personal, and has a lot of factors. As a general rule I would want to stage one in the bedroom, one each in the two rooms you spend the most time in. Another consideration I suggest is to make sure all authorized family members can run each weapon type effectively. I don’t know your personal situation, but my wife is familiar with ARs and Pistols. Therefore, an AK pattern gun wouldn’t be in the rotation.1 point

I'm working out a staging plan. I'm considering hidden shelf type pieces and magnet mounts. I'm never far from a couple as it is but one never knows.1 point

Reading this was great entertainment. As always I don't care how you carry, it's about the person. Are you responsible, do you train, do you have proper equipment. I see concealed carriers that do it wrong, as well as open carriers. I shake my head at both. If you are aware, and you should be I'd bet you can guess who's carrying. I do both and yes I have a retention holster(level 2) for open carry, id say 85% I conceal carry. Carry how you want, don't judge those that do it differently then you. Do I recommend someone have an cheap unreliable firearm no, but if that's what they can afford I get it. I hate the way my wife shoots, but it works for her and she hits. Anyone who say their way is the only way, good luck.1 point

I find OC to be a slippery slope. I can think of a couple of reasons the right to OC is important 1) in some states simply printing is considered open carrying, and if open carrying isn't legal in that jurisdiction the person can be charged. Legal OC prevents this. 2) in certain circumstances I prefer to OC but I'm not likely to encounter others while doing so, such as hiking and back country camping. So while I believe the right to open carry is important, I don't believe in doing so in public, which is tricky because I also believe that we will lose freedoms we don't exercise. Also, the last thing I want to deal with on a grocery run is some opinionated Karen, that is offended by the presence of my firearm. She will make a scene and I'm not going to educate her, or change her mind. If you are into those kinds of confrontations then open carry may be for you.1 point
-
I don’t think it’s any more complicated than simply the fact that they are not allowed to do so. If the law were to change there, as I believe it should, you would likely see an initial explosion of the OC zealots doing their thing. But after a while, good sense and social stigma would result in an in-state of affairs as you have here, or nearly everywhere else in which it is legal and tolerated.1 point

OC is like showing your cards when playing poker….makes in harder to win. secondly, it’s like a gay pride T-shirt, it’s offensive and I don’t care or want to know.1 point

People who open carry are going to be the first person to get shot when trouble comes1 point
-
When I first started carrying I was a proponent of open carry for all of the reasons your friends have mentioned. The longer I carried, and the more experience I gained with firearms the less desire I had to open carry. The only benefit of being allowed to open carry at this point is if at the end of the day of range Larping I just want to get home, I can just get in the car and go and not worry about it if I have to stop and get gas or something along the way. Otherwise, there is no benefit to advertising that I have a firearm on me . my view at this point boils down to this. Should you have the right to open carry, yes. Should you open carry, no.1 point
-
I think open carry is dumb and FAR too often the only people I see open carrying have some sorry, poor excuse for a holster and usually a cheaper handgun to go with it - all which tells me they are probably new, not very trained and/or experienced in actual practice/training. I saw one person at a family event open carrying a LCP, seriously!? Also, it screams "look at me, I have a gun, this means I'm xxxx". Plus if a situation comes up where you need a firearm, they have possibly already given away one their best tools - the element of surprise. If I was a bad guy going to rob or shoot up a place and saw someone open carrying, I'd just off them first then start the mayhem. And another thing, it probably makes anti-gun people more nervous and fearful for no real gain. Better discussion in my opinion, why would someone open carry? I'll give them comfort, but throw a button up or vest over it you got your comfort and concealment.1 point
-
I see open carry from time to time, and honestly, I wish those folks would conceal. We all know that LOTS of people are uncomfortable seeing a sidearm strapped to a hip. My preference is concealed for few reasons: I don't want to call undue attention to myself. I don't want to cause worry to others. I don't like the idea of being the first target if some nutcase decides to start shooting inside a store that I'm visiting. I carry unconcealed when I'm walking in the woods and often on my own property. But in every other circumstance I want to be as discrete as possible. I suspect that a sizeable proportion of those who carry openly do so just because they can, not because it fulfills a necessary purpose.1 point

As I get older, I am enjoying shooting the old guns more and more. Especially those that use black powder. This is a reproduction of a Sharps 1874 in the "Gemmer" style with the cleaning rod running beneath the barrel. It is chambered for 45-70, has a 32" barrel and is crazy accurate. I have just added the venier tang sights and look forward to seeing what they add at longer distances. While I have fired some factory loads through it, it works best with the black powder loads that a friend of mine creates. He has all of the equipment to cast and load all calibers and the process that goes into finding just the right grain of bullet, the primer and of course, the amount of powder is just a fascinating thing to work with. I have a lot to learn, for sure.1 point
