Ended up with this on a trade deal, and thinking about moving it on. This serial numbers as S 1111xx, and from what research I've done, that would be a 1954, first year Highway Patrolman. It has some honest holster wear, and at some point has been ported, appears to be a Magnaport job but I don't know for sure. Grips are nice later Magnas, but are not the orginal diamond stocks. I haven't shot this one, lock up is good and tight and it has an excellent trigger like most old Smiths. Asking $950 in Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Lenoir City area. Trade interest would run towards a .44 mag or a nice pump or semi auto 12 gauge shotgun. I prefer wood stocks but I'm open to most stuff. Just let me know2 points

Got drawn for a tag this year. Was hunting just outside Dayton in Rhea county. The birds were flying great this morning. We all limited out by 9. We would finished earlier if we didn’t suck at shooting. lol. You would think such a large bird would be easy to hit.1 point

I used to live a few miles from the northern start of the Trace. It was my 'therapy' motorcycle ride. I could leave the house and be slowly cruising some beautiful scenery in minutes. It's a nice drive for the scenery - at least the northern part.1 point

I drove it one time about 25 years ago from Jackson MS up to just south of Nashville….far enough to cross the big bridge. Was taking the scenic route from Baton Rouge to Knoxville, lol. As I recall the Tennessee part is far more scenic. The deeper down you go into flat Mississippi it’s like driving on a 40 mph limited access road between fields.1 point

Yep. If it is construction adhesive, it'd be fastest to just cut that drywall out and replace it. Sanding it down would be tedious.1 point

A couple of 275 gallon IBC totes connected to your downspout will be much less of a headache.1 point

I think I’d try a scraper blade on a reciprocating tool. Then a solvent like above to remove the residue that’s left. Are you sure it’s caulk and not construction adhesive?1 point

I've researched this in depth. It isn't generally feasible in our area. There are all kinds of diy digging methods that can be used in other areas where the water table is typically very shallow, but the majority of the time here that will not be in the case. Expect to go deep and expect to go through rock. Most ground water in our area will require a 240 volt pump to get water to the surface.1 point

This part of the country sits on a huge limestone shelf. As well as huge churt rock formations. You might get lucky and find a dirt pocket that you could get a sandpoint todig in to. But I doubt it. Best of luck to you.1 point

After talking to my wife's uncles, they recall the gun always looking like this. I'm wondering if it may have always looked like this? For the time being I think I will clean it well and do nothing. In a side note. One of the uncles told me that he had his dad's rifle that he captured and brought back, but didn't have any paperwork for it. He said that it is duffle cut and that his dad took it from a German officer. I suspect the P-38 may have belonged to the same officer. He didn't have specifics on the rifle, but I'm hoping to learn more about it.1 point

No hazmat fees and free shipping for a case of primers at Target Sports USA right now. https://www.targetsportsusa.com/in-stock-primers-for-sale-c-2806.aspx That comes out to about $80 per 1000 for small pistol primers.1 point

Ordinarily, I'd say no. But as it is a family heirloom and you do plan to keep it, sure go ahead. I suppose you can find somebody to just refinish the gun locally. But be sure to check their other work before giving it to them. Many will polish the gun on rotary wheels and damage the markings. That's a sure value killer right there. What you really need for that gun is a proper restoration. Some place like Ford's can make that gun look like when it was brand new. But it don't come cheap and could be a year or more to get it back. Then there's always the DIY option. Polish by hand and preserve all the markings. Its slow but you know you won't damage anything. I've had excellent results with a product called Blue Wonder. But be sure to read and follow the directions exactly. Just had another thought. You could have the gun Ceracoated or even hydro-dipped in black. Cheap, but functional.1 point

Well that changes things somewhat. I risk ruffling the feathers of the Vortex fanboys, but I am not a fan of them for a couple reasons. That aside, that Strike Eagle is a lot of scope for a deer rifle. Perhaps too much. It is a 56mm, which means you will have to mount it pretty high. It weighs 30 ounces (it’s kind of a pig). It’s first focal plane, which means the reticle appears bigger as you increase magnification and gets smaller as you decrease it. Sometimes on big magnification FFP scopes, the reticle is almost too small to use on the lower magnification (and I suspect nobody cares because the lower magnifications are rarely used on them). I haven’t seen a Strike Eagle 5-25, but I suspect the reticle at 5x (a good general place to put it when hunting) will be less than ideal. A 3-9x40mm is about perfect for a deer rifle, but a 4.5-14 or maybe even a 4-16 second focal plane scope would work and would provide some extra magnification for longer stuff. On a rifle doing double duty in a deer stand and shooting paper targets way over there, compromise is not a dirty word. Also, don’t get hung up on all the hype about bigger objective diameters. Yes, a 50mm will gather more light than a 40mm, but it has to be mounted higher (lower is better IMO) and it’s only beneficial at high magnification. I read an article years ago that explained that you can divide the objective diameter by the magnification and calculate this benefit. In other words, a 50mm objective divided by 5x = 10mm. Your pupil (where light enters your eye) is typically 4 or 5mm in diameter, so it’s overkill until you are at 10x, which kills your field of view. Welcome to the world of getting down in the optics weeds.1 point

I've been a fan of Blue Bloods since the very beginning. Great show! Like many I was surprised that it got canceled this year after 14 very successful seasons. As it turns out, I wasn't the only one. The cast and crew were taken by surprise as well. They all wanted the show to continue and many tried hard to keep it going. So why did CBS cancel one of their most popular shows? Well, it seems that CBS decided that a show that promoted family values and supported police no longer fits in with their current "woke" thinking. So it had to go. Screw SeeBS! https://www.outkick.com/culture/blue-bloods-aired-its-final-show-last-night-fans-emotional https://www.outkick.com/culture/tom-selleck-rips-cbs-cancelling-blue-bloods-series0 points

If it is in fact caulk, you might try braided fishing line with cross sticks tied on each end as "T" handles you can saw your way through it like a garrote, OK maybe I could have used a better analogy.0 points

Updated 12/13/2024. Just got a text from Kathy and Jim passed away this morning. AuEagle (Jim) has been fighting some serious health issues for the last year or so. He fell recently and broke his hip. He has not been able to bounce back from the fall and surgery with everything else going on. He went into hospice last week. He hadn't responded to my texts the last couple of days so I knew something was up. I just spoke to his wife this morning and he doesn't have long left. Please keep him and his wife Kathy in your prayers for a peaceful passing. Jim and I have been friends for many years and I was at his house just a couple of months ago. He told me then he was at peace and ready whenever God called him home. The fall was unexpected and basically just moved the timeline up some. It's been a tough couple of weeks. Another dear friend who was my office manager for years and a 2nd momma to me found out she had brain cancer 4 months ago. She went into hospice yesterday. I visited with her this morning. I am always amazed how fast an illness can move. This is a reminder to tell the people important in your life what they mean to you now. Things can change in the blink of an eye.0 points
