  1. I volunteered at Bristol Motor Speedway this morning. It was ran by volunteers with a lot of Tenn National Guard helping. I worked in the warehouse sorting donations and it was about as well organized as could be expected. The volunteers were all very nice and worked well together. It was very encouraging to see all the items donated by people and businesses all across the country. I would recommend that if you are able and live near Bristol to go online and see what is needed and volunteer.

  2. Folks... The FEMA folks will do nothing more than hand out dollars for storm cleanup and infrastructure repairs. They may pass a few dollars along to those affected by the storms n flooding, but it will be little n late. That's what the gubt does. I've got several buddies that worked part time for FEMA after retirement, they surveyed n assessed the cost of storm cleanup, infrastructure damage and the like. They always took up motel space and drove around surveying damage, nothin more. I think the TN national guard is, in fact, helping to clean up storm debris, take care of logistics for relief supplies, n fly them into remote areas. I see that as a good thing simply because of the tools and manpower the guard has. That said; I DO BELIEVE there are some shenanigans goin on in Johnson County, TN and probably in some isolated Western Carolina counties. I'ma thinkin these are local issues where sheriff's n local state emergency management folks are becoming the wannabe tyrants they always were. As to Western NC; I think that the ratty governor of NC could care less about Western NC. As to the " local tyrants "; affected folks will take due note of who they are and get rid of em in due time at the ballot box. Getting rid of the governor will be a bit tougher I'ma thinkin. Meanwhile, there are plenty of lovely stories of outside groups helpin with the full support of gubt agencies. Problems are never fixed by gubt, nor kindness shown by them. It's always the kindness of benevolent groups n individuals that make the difference. Please continue to give time and treasure to those who are helping these folks; they are doing a whole bunch of good where it counts. The gubt ain't gonna help anyone in the short run, they never do. leroy...

  4. There are also plenty of reports from folks on the ground about FEMA being not simply absent, but actively a hinderance. I would imagine that both types are reports, good and bad, are equally believable. I doubt that there is some grand conspiracy but simply pockets of competence and incompetence competing to provide the lasting narrative on the government response. It’ll eventually all shake out but taking in all the data isn’t a bad thing. Neither is understanding that our own personal biases (whatever their nature) will color how we view what we see.

  10. Probably where I went wrong.. I don’t blame Carnival. Their employees were great. The ship was nice. It was the clientele I had a problem with. It is sure a cheap vacation if you can stand it. That probably explains the clientele.

  11. Already do. Pot is illegal. The feds just ignore that law in the states it's legal. If they can smoke pot, I should be able to have $1k machineguns.

  12. I got a few texts asking if this was a Shield . This is an M&P9 sub-compact 9mm. It is the double-stack 9mm that is sub-compact. It is like a Glock 26 but it holds more rds than a Glock 26 , it holds 12rds. Same size. It will use the 15rd compact magazines and the 17rd full-size magazines also just like a Glock 26 . But it is higher capacity than the Glock 26 with the smallest magazine being 12rds where the Glock 26 only has 10rds. I have 2 of these but selling this to thin the herd. Pretty good deal for $325. This price is in the "Taurus" price range.

  13. I've been married for 24 years to the same woman. We've never been married to anyone else. We don't go on vacations together. She loves the beach. Every beach. I absolutely hate everything about the beach. I'm miserable the entire time I'm in the heat and sand. If I'm going to be hot and dirty, I better be making $1000 a day. On the flip side, my Wife wouldn't in a million years go hunting for hogs in Texas. It's completely alien to her as to why someone would stay up all night with snakes and hogs. I think it's insane to force her to go. She, at first thought I should go to the beach regardless. I explained it to her and being who she is, gave me the benefit of a doubt..... She loves it. She realized I'd be miserable and she wouldn't have fun because of that. Taking her mother, my mother, her sister, and what ever kids want to go makes for a fantastic...drama free vacation. I take take vacations to places she would never want to go and I have a blast. Her friend and co-workers at first say it's horrible....wrong.... My friends want to know how I pulled it off. In the end her friends love the idea, but their husband's would never let them out of their sight. We do try to find things we can do with the whole family. We have a trip to fall creek falls coming up. We well go to the mountains every few years, but She will do 2 to 3 trips a year for a week at a time(She's in Turks and Caicos at the moment) I do 5 to 6 for a couple of days at a time. I have never talked to anyone that does this. Are we an enigma? Would you live your life like this? None of the people I work with would do this and think I'm crazy (divorce, alcoholism, and self destruction is crazy high in my field dueto stress). We've literally been on 5 vacations together including our honeymoon. I'm taking care of the younger kids so she can take my oldest Daughter on a trip. I'll be taking the younger kids kayaking while she's gone. Is there something odd you do in your marriage that people don't understand that works for you?

  17. I totally get where you’re coming from. Luckily my neighbors are acres away, and like minded. Once one of us starts shooting on the weekend there’s usually a 15-30 minute lag before the Cumberland ridge starts to echo in various directions. I have an elderly neighbor that I pal around/handyman/garden for and shoot with every once in a while. He goes down for naps a lot, if I have an open window on a weekend off and I’m shooting some large caliber I’ll give him a shout to make sure he’s not napping. Not every time, but if I have an open 6-hour window I give him a quick buzz. If I've got the itch, or trying out a new gun and just want to run a quick 6-10 mags early evening, I won’t call. He’s also had some younger kids over and called me once while I was plinking and asked if I could refrain as they’re not used to hearing gunshots. Could argue that I should just let them get used to the fact that guns used responsibly aren’t scary, but at the same time I’m not gonna ruin their right to quiet enjoyment during a picnic just because I want to shoot off a dozen mags of higher caliber. Saw a new neighbor move in, introduced myself and gave my info saying if they needed help with anything around the house or if anything happens to give me a call. Mentioned that I shoot once every week or so and put it rather matter of factly. She responded with “yeah, my daughter heard and didn’t like the loud noises”. I replied with “well her uncle next door shoots too, I hear him sighting in his rifle before every deer season, and her uncle shoots a lot of handguns so I’m glad she’s used to it” and left it at that. But at the same time, if the kid has a birthday party I’m not going to invite a few friends over and have us all ringing steel midday. So while I understand that it’s a right and I’m doing nothing wrong, I still want to respect someone’s right to quiet enjoyment. Not the biggest inconvenience for me to be neighborly when I could in theory shoot most evenings before dusk after work.

  18. You didn't miss much at Franklin. Venue was large, but the place felt mostly empty. One guy had a table full of older milsurp guns, but other than that it was the usual Glock/AR-15 show.

  19. I'm a retired volunteer fireman, and I went through a burned out floor in a multi-story structure once, stopping myself with my arms. Luckily for me the fire was mostly out on the lower floor, and others helped me back up. I don't recommend it.

  20. Last year, my wife guilted me into taking one of those bus trips. I dreaded it. I knew it would be all elderly folks. It was going someplace I’d always wanted to see, so I agreed. We were some of the younger people on the trip, but we had a great time. Everybody on the trip were very nice and had a lot in common with us. I’d be happy to go on another one. You just never know until you give it a try. I gave cruise ships two tries. They still suck.

  23. I love spending time with my wife. We've even talked about going hunting this deer season together. She has no interest in it but she does it for me. On the other hand I do stuff for her that I have no interest in for her. Different strokes for different folks I reckon. None of its wrong if it works.

  24. My wife and I do something similar. She’s really into beach vacations, and I can’t stand them—too much sun and sand for me. Meanwhile, she has no interest in my hunting trips or outdoor stuff, so we just take separate vacations. She goes with her friends or family, and I go on my own trips. It actually works out great for us. We still do a family trip here and there, but honestly, I think we both enjoy getting a break to do what we each like. And yeah, whenever I travel, I try to find good deals on Business Class Flights to make the trip more comfortable. It’s kind of become my routine now.

  26. Two Zastava Zpap M70's up for grabs. Both of these are unfired, and come with a 30rd mag each with ammo included! The cleaning rod on the polymer Zpap is snug and may require a punch to remove it. According to Zastava, that is because it's "new" and needs to be broken in. Asking price is $900 each.

  28. I did this once in the first house I ever bought. I cant remember why I was in the attic, but my foot went thru the sheetrock. Luckily, that room had a suspended ceiling also, so just had to replace a couple tiles.

  29. Many years ago I did this. I was a gopher/grunt for an electrician my first job out of high school. My task was to pull a piece of romex through the attic of preschool/daycare one morning. Needless to stay I made a misstep and stuck a boot through the concealed grid ceiling. It didn’t help there were preschoolers in attendance at the same time .

  30. I've seen multiple reports from people on Facebook saying FEMA is on the ground and helping. I'm guessing the disconnect is that they can't be everywhere. I'm sure there are places they haven't reached. One person on Reddit gave a detailed report sharing how they spent the day with FEMA going door to door, taking a census and seeing which supplies each house needed. Even governor Lee has stated the federal government has been helpful. Again, people are going to politicize this to help their cause. There is clearly a misinformation campaign going on. Being so close to the election is not helping.

  32. Unfortunately many of those reports are true and this is based on the amount of direct contact with family and friends, first hand eye witness myself, etc. I have to say I'm appalled at how this area is being ignored in so many ways. You can ignore the fancy press releases. Most I've read are basically outright lies. On the flip side, people from all over have been a godsend. The amount of volunteers, support, goods received have saved countless lives. Below is a post from one of my clients. Basically spot on with what I've heard and experienced.

  34. We ventured out today on our isolated Island and could not believe the generosity being shown. There is at least 6 places along the 25 mile road that doesn't go anywhere giving out food and water. We got some bottle water at one about a mile from our house and some staples like bread and milk etc. Tried to make a cash donation to help replenish and they said no. Everything was donated and an another truck was coming this afternoon. We then tried one the other direction in the hopes they had bulk water that we could fill our jugs for flushing and dishwashing first one had a long line so we kept going down to where we heard they brought a big tanker in, like 5th wheel semi size tanker and they filled up our jugs for us then told us we had to take a case of bottled water even though we had plenty at the moment. They said everyone that stops gets at least a case. Then to our surprise a small specialty grocery next door was not only open but had electricity. There internet connection was down so cash only. Not a problem we keep cash on hand just in case of a power outage not expecting a massive flood. So we indulged in some treats we probably would normally buy along with some fresh cold cuts, eggs and 2 of their great deli sandwiches. Then back home, pretty good outing. Found a neighbor that we had only met once sitting at the end of the driveway (we are at the top of the road so it is a good place to see about half the road). He asked if we needed anything he was apparently out check us old people to see if we needed anything. I assume he saw us leave and was waiting for us or guarding the road, because after he talked he took off. Second neighbor that has checked on us and offered to help if we need anything. Our neighbors are pretty much friendly but it isn't a let's get together neighborhood, so it is great that they are willing to offer help. Even the fellow that does our lawn work, that lives out of the isolated area, texted yesterday and today checking if we were ok and even offered to bring us food, water and gas if we need him, he is a volunteer at one of the food/water stations. There are great people out there.

  35. My second boss and his wife took separate vacations. At the time he told me this I was a young adult, newly married, and thought that was crazy weird. Fast forward thirty years and I now laugh at younger me. Separate vacations are genius. Every couple needs to find what works for them and then do that. Screw what other people think or do. It's an A B relationship and other people can C their way out of it.
