  1. Ones has to shoot before you can get a jam. If you are not carrying, well the cart is in front of the horse. Most of us started with small calibers and that is what I recommend with most new shooters, especially women. There are some exceptions. If you think .22 is not acceptable, hold my target for me. I have instructed many new shooters and the most common mistake I have seen, both male and female is trying to start with snub 38s. Some people can’t pull the trigger dbl action. Most are surprised at the recoil. Get quality instruction and a large sampling and let the shooter decide. I always tell husbands and boyfriends, if you don’t buy their shoes, don’t buy their guns, let them decide by trying them on.

  19. My first computer was an S100 bus, home-built monstrosity that used an 8" floppy disc drive. My first hard drive held a whopping 6 megabytes, and I thought I would never fill it. It was a full-hight drive, by the way. But hey, I learned electronics when everything used tubes.

  21. It seems like you are recovering well but aren't doing too good on your current acid reflux meds. Surely a telephone consult to your doctor could result in a prescription to try something else or a bump up in your current dosage. Hopefully you can start getting to the point you can sleep uninterrupted for 8hrs and get some real rest. That always helps when healing is on the agenda. As for chicken livers, every now and then I get a craving, too. I'm glad you got to scratch that itch even if it wasn't completely uneventful. One day at a time is easy to say, but harder to live. Hang in there.

  23. I haven't milled a gun yet, but one less failure point is good. I always use thread locker on clean components and can read torque specs as well as anybody, but I have had several issues on different guns with dots or plates not staying put. A visible iron sight picture in the very bottom of the dot window is ok, but putting it higher where it is nearly on the same plane as the dot sight picture is idiotic. I don't get why people do this - it's a huge distraction. I also remove the fiber optic pipe on the front sight (if it's FO). it's just another distraction. Definitely. I see a lot of new or casual shooters getting advice that a dot will solve all their problems. Dots are handy, but require some regular dry fire or live fire to maintain a needed index that isn't as critical with iron sights. This gets exacerbated when the user carries a J-frame on Tuesday, a Glock on Thursday, and a 1911 on Saturday. It really gets ugly when the casual shooter tries to shoot quickly with one hand. Dots are not always as beneficial as advertised. Somebody who doesn't want to practice occasionally may be better off with irons if some fast combat accuracy is suddenly necessary.

  25. I know it’s not the question that you asked, but small revolvers suitable for carry, even in smaller calibers, are generally awful to actually shoot and use. If I may offer a bit of a recommendation outside of your actual ask, maybe have her take a firearms familiarization class from a local range where she gets to try and use several different handguns. The benefit may be twofold in that she may discover more confidence with a semi automatic pistol, but also may help discover what will actually work for her.

  26. The stock of the Texan as it was when I got it and after removing the poly finish and going back with hand rubbed oil finish. One reason I was interested in it was I could see the potential beauty in the stock.

  27. I’m so tired of voting for republicans because they’re the lesser of the two evils. I made the mistake once of voting for an independent (Ross Perot) which got Bill Clinton elected, and I’ll never vote for a Democrat, but Lordy, is it too much to ask to get a truly conservative GOP who will follow through? Bill Lee sure suckered us in his first campaign and we had no real choice the 2nd.

  30. I've been through the motorcycle thing (ass was practically glued to a motorcycle seat for a decade, then one day I just decided I wanted to do something else and that was that.) Moved onto boats. After the lakes became impossibly crowded after COVID I didn't particularly find that enjoyable anymore. Moved onto ATVs. Started out for hunting purposes but with a young son in tow most weekends we migrated to more riding and less hunting. I also went to a SXS when he started tagging along. Still have my 4 wheelers, the Honda Rincon 650 gets mostly used around the yard these days and the Recon 250 is awaiting a top end rebuild, but still doesn't and won't get used much. It's mostly kept around as a back up for a back up. My 2012 Polaris RZR800 has been a love hate relationship and required a lot of wrenching. I built the bed for it as it came with a "bed delete" . Once squared away it's been a pretty good little machine and will go near anywhere you ask it to.

  32. Most fun toy I ever owned. I bought it right after I got my lot on the lake. Used it for 3 years clearing and rip rapping 600 ft of lake bank. I ran out of anything to do with it and sold it but wish I still had it.

  33. I bought a Moel 36 3" like this in 1980 at the Donelson Hardware Store in Nashville. I still carry it with pride. Of all the handguns I owned before the boating accident, this is the fastest to draw and fire.
