  4. It is ridiculous politicians oppose firearm safety courses. Firearms are prevalent in our society and nearly every single person will be in proximity to a firearm at various times of their lives (whether they know it or not). Schools teach fire safety, drug awareness, and many other health and safety related topics in schools so why not firearms safety?

  6. Might just have been my wifes' Dad. My father-in-law was the worst for this I've ever run across and taught me well. I've kept pieces of 2x everything! Pieces of plywood most people would burn! But best was the 2x10 ends cut from house rafters. We were cruising and found a job site with a full dumpster. Lord help me! We stopped and asked to go thru it for salvage. Got told to go ahead. We left with an 8' truck bed stacked and roped with all kinds of "scrap & treasure"! When he passed away, it took 4 of us to empty the shelves of his "Might need it someday" stash! LOL! I miss that man.

  10. I've said for years that the hunter safety course should be taught in school. They're gonna need it anyway to get a license to hunt. I had it in Vo Ag class in 1981. Dunno when they dropped it. And the majority of the classroom work for the carry permit was simply a rehash of the same stuff. I asked the instructor I had why hunter education course didn't qualify toward HCP. I've asked my Rep the same question since then .... I never got an answer from either.

  11. I have been known to carry a bandana with a padlock. I carried a brake disc style lock made just for locking up a motorcycle with a bandana threaded through it in my back pocket when riding. They have a lot of weight and I damn sure wouldnt wanna be hit by one.

  12. I hear ya! My first gun 40 years ago was an Ithaca Model 66 20 gauge. I guess it wasn’t technically a “lever action”, it was more “lever-activated break-open” for the single shot. Later on, I was able to pick up a 12 gauge as well. Now I need to find the 410 . While obviously not in the same category as the rifles, it started my love of the levers.

  14. The goal was to build the lightest weight rifle I possibly could on a realistic budget (as cheap as I possibly could) I decided to go with a non gassed gun, making it a simple, straight pull bolt action. I just got finished making the carbon buffer tube/stock tonight & I believed she's done. Faxon pencil weight barrel, gas port blanked off. Wiland USA 10" carbon hand guard. TN Arms carbon lower. BCA side charge upper converted to left hand charge & milled extensively to reduce weight. NFA poly LPK, with 3lb Timney trigger ($68 on sale at Dvor) & bolt hold open omitted. Hogue grip, only $20 & just over 1oz! Home made carbon buffer tube with cheap, Amazon clamp on butt plate. No-Name ambi side charge bolt, cut off behind the firing pin (no need for the back half, since there's no buffer or spring) Charging handle from a Ruger PC Carbine, drilled & modified to fit. It ended up right at 3lb 11oz, bare weight. 4lb 8oz with the temporary old Tasco 4x. I have an ultralight SWFA 2.5-10x32 ordered that'll bring it down even further, to 4lb 4.5oz but I can't wait until then to try it out at the range!

  17. Two more form 4s submitted today. We will see how long they take. My FFL told me he had an individual form 4 (mine are on a trust) recently come back in three days. He has seen form 4s on a trust come back in three weeks since the ATF updated the e-form system. Fingers crossed.

  23. This won't be helpful for some of you, but for others who are considering knee surgery, see if you qualify for a partial knee replacement. Most surgeons want to do the full knee replacement, so you may have to look around to find someone who will do yours. But if you qualify for the partial replacement, it's a much less invasive procedure, and you'll be up and walking in a day and fully recovered within weeks instead of months. Cheers, Whisper

  25. I was never a fan of Frank Herbert. Just didn't care for him. Tried reading Dune several times and just couldn't do it. Of course that was probably 25 years ago. But the idea of whole civilizations searching for, and fighting over giant worm dung just didn't grab me. These days...I might just have to try again.

  30. So much less liability if you smoke an MFer than bludgeon them and allow them to live. This is simply the reality of modern law and how it is interpreted.

  32. I couldn't possibly agree more! The law makes no sense whatsoever. I think we should be allowed to carry a morning star in one hand and a spiked club in the other...not kidding, nobody wants to get hit with a morning star.

  33. This is one area that had always struck me as odd, especially when the laws changed on knives and firearms carry. You can carry any knife you want, anyway you want to, same with a gun. OC spray and taser are socially and lawfully carried most places, but a stick, the most basic of weapons, cant be carried without an arbitrary piece of paper saying you know how to use it. I wish TN would just go ahead an open it up and allow any self defense to be carried by law abiding citizens, and make the prison term so sever for commiting a crime with a weapon that criminals actively avoided the state

  34. TCA 39-17-1307 Make carrying club misdemeanor. TCA 39-17-1308 is the defenses which list what has been already mentioned. I carried one for several years only really used it to get something that fell under a patrol car or break windows. I always just went to hard hand/ strikes same level. Carrying oc spray doesn't require any cert if I recall and that will make most people not having a mental issue or drug issue eyes clamp down and they typically aren't as aggressive physically anymore.

  35. My youngest daughter and her family are here, and we were shooting yesterday, and she asked if I would get the Henry Lever out so she could shoot it. She loves that rifle. Hope to get it out on Friday and bust some caps. It is 38/357 Mag caliber. She asked me to give the rifle to her when I get finished with it. I am. We have shot up some expensive ammo this month. We have fired around 2,000 all totaled, rounds this past 2 weeks. With the 3 newbies I trained last week and my grandkids this week. They look forward to this week every year. My 13 Y O granddaughter took my Model 60 22 w/scope and was dinging the 22 steel tree target with 2" swing out targets at 50" feet like crazy. That thing is a "hoot to shoot". She out shot her brother, mom and dad with that rifle. That thing is a tack driver. Shoots 1" groups at 50 yards off sandbags. Edited to add; They all want to shoot the Henry lever. Guess another 100/200 or so rounds of 38 Spl and 357 Mag are going to get burned, L/w. I will say the Henry is one of my favorite rifles also. Just something about swinging that lever. When I was a kid my dad had a 243-lever gun. I shot it all the time. He also had a pre-model 10 38 Spl revolver and I fired it whenever he got it out. Guess my love for them followed me from kiddom into adulthood. Truly thankful today for family, and epically for Jesus Christ, and what he has done for us all. I praise Him.

  38. I shoot both 38 specials and 357 in my Rossi Puma. Some folks claim wadcutters won’t feed well in some lever rifles. I have the Rossi in 357 and an 1894 Marlin chambered in 44 Magnum. I’ve been happy with both. They are both older models and not recent production. I also have an 1894 Marlin in 38-40. It’s over a hundred years old. It’s fun to shoot, but you’d want to handload for it as well. I’m not trying to dissuade you from the 45-70. I’d just suggest you price ammo for it, and maybe shoot someone else’s. They are easy to sell if you get one and decide you don’t like it though. A 39 Marlin 22lr is sure a fun little rifle!

  40. You have no idea! I was lucky. When I acquired most of mine, you couldn’t give away a lever action rifle. Everyone wanted the latest whiz bang magnum bolt rifle. Deer were tough then.

  41. Avoidance, while not necessary in 'Stand Your Ground' states, and certainly not required for the 'Castle Doctrine', shows that the SD actor did, where safely possible, avoid using SD except as a last resort. That works to the benefit of the SD actor. One fallacy is that there is a "Stand Your Ground" law. Same with the "Castle Doctrine.' There is no such thing as it falls into the category of Self-Defense and merely takes the issue of Avoidance out of the prosecution's playbook in certain states. Edited: As to the "Verbal Warnings" that should be done not so much as to warn the attacker, but for the benefit of any witnesses around who heard you give warnings. Another plus for the SD actor.
