  1. Back when I had a decent salsa garden (tomatoes, tomatillos, onions, garlic, multiple peppers) I made upwards of 100 pints of salsa every year. Some went to family but we tended to go through at least a jar a week in our house alone. Since I had the water bath canning setup I threw cucumbers into the mix and made ~20 or so jars of pickles annually. I ended up getting pretty good with jams and jellies as well. Friends and family always wanted my jars of pepper jelly and Blackberry jam for Christmas every year instead of gift cards or a bottle of wine. I never got setup to pressure can so I never did try low acid veggies or meats. Now I do not have a garden and the new house is not conducive to starting one. No fences and hordes of deer, rabbit, armadillo, opossum, and skunks make it nearly impossible to keep plants alive that are not right up against the house. If they ever develop the land behind me and I have to put up a fence I might try again. I adopted the square foot gardening raised bed method for my last garden and had some great success with it. Efficient and easy maintenance as well.

  2. Canning is an excellent and imho, necessary skill. I taught myself to pressure cans meats first as I figured everything else should be fairly easy. I too can dried beans as the beans can get hard over time and wind up crunchy, even after soaking overnight and a long crock pot cook. I use a ratio of 60/40 (40% dried beans to 60% water). I put a small amount of canning salt (it doesn't could up like iodized salt does). I just bear in mind seasonings are enhanced during the canning process and I figure I can always add additional seasoning after opening. I have home canned pinto beans, black beans, and black eyed peas in my basement pantry as I type this. Oh, dried beans. In my experience they start getting hard/tough after about 5-7 years...even in Mylar bags with o2 absorbers. YYMV I've read many warnings over the years about being really cautious including rice or pasta in the canning process as their absorption rate can negatively impact the safety of the process. Again YMMV I have canned gumbo using a small amount of rice and survived it. I've also canned Swedish meatballs in gravy and that went well. Back in the actual paper magazine days I subscribed to Back Homes magazine. I have several books I purchased through them and my most used are the Jackie Clay books. "Growing and Canning Your Own Food" is excellent imho. I think I bought mine in 2009. I know it didn't initially include a Table of Contents and Ms. Clay mailed it to me later on. I've even had email discussions with Ms. Clay when I was experimenting with various canning projects. Nice lady. https://www.backwoodshome.com/shop/product/growing-and-canning-your-own-food-2/ Back when bacon was semi affordable I gave a try at canning bacon using parchment paper, laying the bacon out on the paper and rolling it up. Worked great! I've also canned "Hot Wings" and spicy chicken legs and thighs. Great for a quick addition to a meal after a long days work. Thanks for starting this thread @gregintenn. Interesting stuff and an encouragement to do some more.

  12. Up for sale in a Remington Nylon 66! One of the most iconic .22LR rifles around, and this one is threaded 1/2x28mm for your favorite muzzle accessory. Extremely light semi-automatic rifle, weighing in at only 4 pounds! It was really way ahead of it's time considering when they were released in 1959. The tubular butt stock magazine holds 12 rounds of .22LR. My friend did the threads in his machine shop by turning down the barrel, installing a bushing in place with red locktite, then threading the bushing. You wouldn't even know looking at the threads that that is how this barrel was done. Over 200 rounds fired, no issues with baffle strikes on my suppressor. Pictured with a Silencerco Sparrow, not included but I can let you shoot it some suppressed at Nashville Armory's Range if you like. This is one of the quietest .22lr semi-auto rifles I have shot. Surface pitting on both side of receiver and top of receiver, some wear on barrel/receiver, scuffs stock all over. Originally this gun was sitting in a closet unassembled when my best friend bought his house. He fixed a part on it, threaded it and sold it to me to pay for some other firearms. Price drop to $300! SOLD PENDING MEET! Located in Nashville, TN

  13. The weather outside is frightful, so we’re canning pinto beans today. I think we’re the missing link between hillbilly and prepper. Anybody got any innovative canning ideas?

  15. As a child, I learned to be a passable piano player, a beginner trumpet player, and a so so guitarist. Years went by and now I’ve no idea how to play a piano or trumpet anymore, but can barely get by with a guitar. I’ve been watching Marty Schwartz YouTube videos to brush up on guitar. He is awesome, by the way, if you’d like to learn guitar. A couple of episodes touched on music theory, which I was never taught at all, and it has me captivated. I know we have musicians among us. Is there a seminal book or program that explains music theory in a way my tiny brain can comprehend it?

  16. SOLD Thanks for looking, Whisper I'm continuing to prune the collection and need to cut back on shotguns. Here for sale is a Beretta 1301 Competition, 12 ga, in excellent condition, lightly used (I took one shotgun class with it) and with the scarce option of two barrels. I had one barrel cut back to 20" for defensive uses (no choke) and the other barrel is 24" and has interchangeable chokes. These extra barrels are scarce -- I can't find them for less than $700 anywhere right now. With this setup you could have one barrel for defensive purposes and the longer barrel for hunting. The shotgun is the original 1301 Comp but I've added the aftermarket bolt release shroud to prevent the bolt release from accidentally moving backwards. It also has a picatinny rail already installed on the receiver and a +1 magazine extension. Included is a Steiner weapon mounted light (screws onto the magazine tube so can only be used without the mag extension). Comes in a Beretta hard case as shown, plus manual and choke wrench. $1300 to a TN resident legally able to purchase firearms. I live in Chattanooga but travel to Nashville fairly often and would drive a reasonable distance for a deal. Trades considered, although I'm not really looking for anything specific at the moment. If someone would like to purchase the second barrel separately, we can discuss. Thanks for looking, Whisper

Rick Beato has some neat courses. Has 2 YouTube channels that I like very much also. He's Just about the music and talent. Has interviews with great musicians. https://rickbeato.com/

  27. Since this is a new handgun it is very difficult to find holsters. I was able to get a IWB Kydex holster from Red Hill Tactical. It had a price of $71.00. For now it is working for me, but will look for others in the future.

  29. Had this less than a year, maybe 150 shells through it. Excellent condition, runs like a top, I just like my Beretta better. I added weight to the stock and forend (1 inch stainless rod), I can remove if desired. Includes all shims, chokes and manual. Pretty sure I still have the box. https://www.franchiusa.com/semi-auto-shotguns/affinity-3-sporting $850 in the Hendersonville/Goodlettsville area.

  30. I didn’t actually put rice in the red beans and sausage. It did turn out good. Instead of beef, I got a deer roast out of the freezer and we canned venison stew. It turned out really good as well. So far, we’ve batted 1000 on the canning. Everything had been good. Green beans, pintos, purple hills, tomato sauce, various pickles, deer roast, etc. My wife wants to try breakfast sausage next. Her grandmother canned it and she always liked it.

  31. Current gasoline is only good for maybe 4-6 months due to the government mandated Ethanol added to it. Its the Ethanol that breaks down quickly and ruins the gas. However, adding a good fuel stabilizer to stored gas can greatly improve its life. Treated gas will still be good after 2 years. I had one can that I sorta forgot about and it was still good after 3 years.

  36. Went to some old friends house as it was there last get together in the house they have lived in for 40 years. The game was on, I missed the start, O well. I stayed till just after half time, did not like the show. wandered around talking to others. I "did" see parts of the game but did not "watch" the game. I gave up on baseball after the 2nd strike for money, nascar after the flag thing, football when some players disrespected the country for not standing for the national anthem and the owners let them with out repercussions.

  39. I'm in my early 40s, I didn't make good decisions health wise (or much at all) until the past few years. I was relatively healthy and active and had a few extra pounds but wouldn't consider myself overweight. I started trying to eat better and I do cardio at a minimum 3 hours per week. I figure taking care of myself now will lead to better health should I be lucky enough to get older. I also just all around feel better.

  43. I am also a large guy with no butt and carrying has always been an issue with me. I dang near cut myself in half trying to carry my XDs with an extra mag. The tighter I made my belt the more uncomfortable I was. Then a friend told me about upfitters suspenders. They are awesome. I wear a core belt with IWB holster w/extra mag and my belt at a very comfortable light tension and do not run around pulling my pants up all the time. Game changer for me.
