The problem with that analogy is that a fire extinguisher only helps with a small fire before it gets big. It won't save your house if a wildfire comes blazing through. So the real question everyone has to ask is what level of fire protection are you willing and able to implement and maintain? A reasonable person might have multiple extinguishers on hand. A person might step it up a bit and be sure to have a written fire escape plan with the family and escape ladders by every upstairs bedroom window. Next maybe add a fire suppression blanket by the grill and the stove. Then what? Clear all trees and shrubs within 50 yards of the home? Clear all vegetation including grass? Install a metal roof? Replace exteriro siding with cement board? Add an exterior and interior sprinkler system plumbed from a well and powered by a battery wall and backup gas generator? Bulldoze up high berms around the home 100 yards out? Or a person could raze the current home and build an underground bunker made of reinforced concrete and steel. It's a spectrum that starts with unprepared and ends in over prepared . . . unless the event happens then it looks smart. It's the same for disaster preparedness. Starting with a few supplies and ending in that same underground concrete and steel bunker. At some point a person can be so concerned with surviving what might happen that they forget to live in the now and enjoy life. Each of us has to find the balance that's right for us given real-world constraints like time, money, location, family, and more.6 points

There is a " de facto secession " going on in Texas right now. Others, about abeit quieter ones are going on in other states, both Red and Blue. The truth is that the Federal Gubmt has lost the confidence of most of the citizenry, and all of em ain't MAGA Republicans n Libertarians. The result of all this deconstructon of confidence in gubt will flare up as various trouble, no matter who sits in the white house or congress. We are at the point of state nullification of Federal Law. That's what the Articles of Confederation were all about... Everybody minds his own business on a state by state business, and only united against " commin enemies ". That's what Texas has done, and they ain't the only ones doin it. The " Trouble " thing ain't an " If " it's a " when and where ". If I lived in a blue state I would move; if a 50/50, I would sure move. The reason to be armed is clear and to tighten the circle of trusted friends is clear. That said, I think that things will stay calm in Tennessee outside the usual idiotic places, and we all know where they are. We are moving back to the " Frontier ". Stay watchful, armed, prepared, and vigilant. watchin leroy... The armed crumudgeon3 points

Great condition. Comes with hard case, two mags, everything shown. I can't find the holster, but I'm still looking and if I find it I'll include it. $800, FTF up to 30 miles from Spring Hill, TN. Only ~100 rounds through it. Fantastic gun, but I have too many toys and need to cut back a bit.2 points

Have you read the book, "One Second After"? Sure it is fiction but it goes into what happens after the power goes out. And yes, it is predicted that within a week people are killing one another. That's the kind of thing I'm hoping we don't face. I wouldn't be surprised though if we did though. The only way I think that we would see Trump Assassinated would be if they knew for sure that they could pin it on someone that wouldn't cause the backlash. If they found someone who is a pro Trump supporter and convinced them to kill him, that might work. Or, more likely, using a foreign state such as Iran. If they did this then they could justify war with Iran and would have support from everyone. I hope this doesn't happen because then we are really heading into WW3 fast and hard. Same thing with the border issue in Texas. If they get someone to kill a national guard or a Fed, but not let anyone know who fired the shot; then real fighting might start there, and that would lead to civil war.2 points

Back when I was traveling for work, I was told of the "SSS" concept related to wolves reintroduced by the government. onto the local area by a farmer in CO! I believe we should always be prepared, just like having a fire extinguisher at home. You don't want or expect a fire, but if you do experience one...2 points

Here in Jonesborough most of the snow is gone now. Being 45 overnight helped a lot with that. There wont be a spot of snow in another day or 2 with higher temps and rain coming. I'm glad since I am an avid mountain biker.2 points

Staying on topic, I watched the remaining snow melt while I grilled a cornish hen out last night for supper. And it's 41* this morning.2 points

I got 3 of the 16” 357 Rossi levers, great little rifles. I put lighter ejector springs in them, so they don’t throw my brass 10 feet away. Also have a Uberti 1873 357 20” octagon barrel, it’s about too pretty to shoot.2 points

Hit the nail on the head with the soundtrack. Phenomenal. Edit: Just rewatched this scene. The background music buildup was spot on.1 point

Man that first Sicario was epic. For me, it was the Johan Johanson soundtrack (sadly, he died). He said he wanted to create a soundtrack that wasn't music, just purely suspense. Frickin NAILED it. The night raid scene still gets my hyped (that and the bridge) Also, it's fitting that in thermal, Emily Blunt looks like she's from They Live. OBEY! CONSUME!1 point

I am not referring to organizing against the USG. More like organizing your neighborhood against riots, looters, and maybe Jehovah's Witnesses.1 point

These threads can appear to get out there no doubt Should we be prepared? Of course we should always be prepared I was checking out at the store the other day Guy in front of me couldn't get his damn card to work seemed like 5-10 minutes finally they get that s*** working I get up to register and I tell the young lady behind it and that's why you carry cash She responds I never carry cash So quick and easy story is this I said let's say You've got $10,000 in the bank and you're comfortable with that and the fact that you think you can always access it with your card to get whatever you need anytime day or night Let's just say you go to bed one night and the internal revenue service decides you futzed up your tax return and you now owe them $9995 and accordingly they remove that from your account because they have that ability they have that ability today Of course it's a mistake not trying to explain that s*** to them firing off letters phone calls it'd be months before you saw your money but in the meantime you didn't have any cash anywhere you put your faith in the system as you were taught in school to do I said so now what? Do yourself a favor keep some cash nearby always doesn't have to be $10,000 but you do have to keep some cash for just such an occasion She said you know my parents never taught me that I said to her I'm not surprised regardless always plan ahead Make it a part of the way you operate Canned goods yeah get you a bunch why not they got a fairly long shelf life and you just keep them rotated Water I always keep some water maybe not as much as I should but I do you never know You're always getting letters in the mail blah blah blah your water failed a test etc People don't prepare for anything so if you mention preparing they get scared they think you're nuts I think it's more nuts the fact we've gotten away from self-reliance1 point

I enjoyed the sequels. They stretched a few things a bit thin but were pleasant reading. I rarely read books like that for SHTF tips though, just pleasure. It is a nice area. We spent time there for a lot of years but not so much in the last few.1 point

I have and the 2 follow ups. Funny story, I read it the first time on vacation sitting on a porch with a view of Black Mountain. I drove through Old Fort and past the Montreat College sign on the way in. I had no idea they were included when I started.1 point

Who has a bulldozer that I can borrow? Actually the thread is quite tame, no one is advocating for violence, but preparing for it if it happens. No one is even talking about any form of violence, but working to form communities and being able to help one another in case something does happen. You know, like what we SHOULD be doing. You care for yourself and family first, and then help out those around you as you can. The goal being to survive and protect ourselves, not to go on the offensive and cause problems, just handle those that are brought to us.1 point

I read 1984 in High School as well, also graduated in '88. it changed my view of the world at the time, made me think a lot more than I expected it to. But it wasn't until I read it again, after college, and after reading up on George Orwell himself. He lived through the Spanish Revolution and was fighting against the Fascist state, the book was meant to be a warning, to show people how they manipulate and bring about these things without you realizing it. While in 1988 it was pretty much required reading for everyone, it quickly went away after that. It is not really taught anymore. My sons never read it (I tried to get them too). We are not seeing that they are here again, almost exactly what George predicted and said would happen. They aren't using 1984 as a warning anymore, they are using it as a guide book to bring about the next regime and we are standing in their way. For those who don't think so, we are in civil war right now. People think that these things happen fast, that war is declared, shooting starts an 6 months later it's over and everything has changed. No, it is a slow roll, it comes upon you. right now we are still in the early stages, it hasn't turned hot yet. But Texas is standing up to the Feds, it could turn hot any day, quickly. If that keeps simmering and the elections become a total pooch screw, fighting will start. People will die. I feel old. My priority will be to protect my family, then my neighbors and community. I'm hoping it never comes to that, but even if we don't have fighting in our area, we will be affected. And thus, we should be prepared.1 point

@JW3Percent Don't believe most of what you read on the internet from either side.... Conspiracy ideas abound and can drive you crazy. The internet has only made it worse than it was before. My worry is what is happening that that all these hijinks are meant to keep us focused off of. Best you can do is be as prepared as possible for whatever scenarios you deem likely. I personally think a wide range EMP would be the worst. No way for a person to prevent it and then there are 330 million hungry people fighting for whatever scraps are on the shelves locally. How likely is it that the EMP strike is not noticed and prevented I do not know. Plus it would have to take out most of North America or we would just send aid from the areas not affected. Would be an issue but not long term. Bombings and insurgent activity might affect big cities, but no one is bombing or deploying forces to Crossville or such. Maybe Oak Ridge or Nuclear Fuels in Erwin as a stretch. They are heavily guarded so much less likely to cause huge issues. DC, New York,Chicago, etc would be possibilities due to population density and lower percentage of armed citizens.1 point

Mother in law’s water line froze and burst in her bathroom. House was built in the 30’s maybe, and plumbed as an after thought. Me and 2 brother in laws spent all day working on it. Not fixed. Maybe tomorrow. Bath and sink drains also rotted we discovered. No room to work. This chit sucks!!! I’m only glad I’m physically able to help. You couldn’t give me an old house unless I could bulldoze it and sell the lot. Ease of future maintenance was foremost in my mind when I designed our house. Whoever built this one; not so much! I’m only telling you this to say if you see an old house for sale and think “It would be cool to renovate this” to move on!1 point

I hate to say it, but if you are referring to the nation as "our people", you have already lost. People rising to the occasion in times of need makes good news stories. Those acts are a drop in the bucket of the self serving if not all out depraved things that will happen if it all spins out. Generally all the news outlets are really only there to push what sells papers, creates clicks, and makes money. So fear mongering is a big part if it too. Very few in the nation will ever really know the exact truth about anything. We just get given the narrative that X group wants us to know. So while it great to be on alert, resist the urge to jump in a bunker and lock the door just because the news person says the sky is falling. Best to tighten that circle down to trusted family and friends to have a hope of survival. It would be great if we could all be part of a large group that planned to come together when crisis strikes, but few of us have that luxury to trust so many. Best we might work out is M.A.G.s (mutual assistance groups) that we hope hold together. In the end though it is like I was taught growing up, you take care of family (blood or otherwise) and that might be the best you can do. So I would start with that. The methheads in the house a mile away will be more to worry about than a huge group of anti-US insurgents that for some reason decide to descend on TN. The Soviets were the boogie man for forever and that turned into nothing for 99% of US citizens. I never see a Red Dawn scenario happening. The manpower, equipment, and supply chain needed for it would be staggering. For comparison, the largest force Genghis Khan ever assembled was less than 240,000 men. Ten times that might start to invade and control the US as a whole. That is if none of the 330 million citizens fought back. If COVID in 2020 taught us nothing else, it showed the frailty of our supply chains. I think disruption of those is a far more like threat. And it could bring the country to its knees just as hard.1 point

Been studying the HAM radio handbook. Only a few hours but can already pass the tests. Some of it is logical, I have a degree in Electrical Engineering. Biggest difficulties right now are the detailed specs like knowing what frequency services are. But I’m sure with a bit more studying I’ll have them down. If I can do it, you can too. I have no desire to be part of a HAM club, too old for that now. But I do want to help the community, especially in the time of need or crisis. Today the Supreme Court ruled that Texas can’t block the border; that is the Feds job. Even if they aren’t doing it. Watched a video this morning (before the announcement) of an illegal from the Middle East yelling “You don’t know me now, but you will soon!” Trouble is brewing, and it just about ready. We used to laugh about SHTF; but man I feel like today was a big step in the direction. Need to be prepared, need to be ready, need to dig in a protect our people.1 point

I don't think the question anymore is, Will things get bad? I think the question now is, When will things get bad? We have half the world mad at us and Russia, with even more nuclear weapons than us, threatening us. Everyone thinks Russia would never attack us with nuclear weapons as that would lead to mutual destruction. The problem with that line of thinking is Putin is totally in charge. He is an old man with not a lot of life left to live. He is not winning the war and knows he will not as long as NATO backs Ukraine. If he does not win this war, he is done. What does he have to lose. Even if Russia doesn't we still have Iran and North Korea who would. We have an election coming up and America has not been this divided since the civil war. The Democrats and the liberal media are trying every dirty trick in the books to stop Trump before the election even begins. They have tried impeachment, criminal charges, are are now trying to keep him off the ballot. I don't know if the election was stolen or not, but judging from the left's current behavior, I tend to think they are capable of it. And I can see where, if Trump loses, many will believe they did again. We are $34 Trillion in debt. Two of our biggest debt holders, China and Japan are both concerned about our ability to repay this debt and are selling our debt instead of buying more. The social Security Trust Fund was investing their surplus funds into government bonds and now account for 3 trillion of the government debt. Social Security is no longer running a surplus and will be cashing in their debt to pay their monthly obligations rather than investing more. Less people are willing to buy our debt. This will drive up the interest rates we have to offer to get investors to buy. In order to hold rates down, the Federal Reserve will have to buy more of our debt. Problem is the Federal Reserve does not have the money. That means they will have to print trillions more dollars leading to hyper inflation.1 point

I also like the other 3 S rule: Stockup-Skillup-Shutup @OP, planning for trouble? No. Prepared for trouble? As best as I can be given the realities of modern life. I'm not worried about post-election violence. That's been a bogey-man for a long time. Prepare for really bad weather (extended winter power outages, blocked roads from downed trees, water out from broken mains) then add boolits and you'll also be prepared for most social unrest. You'll have to go way down the rabbit hole of prepping and make significant changes to how you live your every day life to be ready for a full societal collapse. Very few people are willing to do that and even fewer can do that on their own.1 point
