For the first 20 years my resume looked like the Yellow Pages--newspaper writing, ad agency, hot-shot delivery and other odd jobs. When the wife found me, I was a scumbag scuba diving instructor. A couple of years later the Lord found me and eventually brought me into airline maintenance and then training mechanics. I retired off that after 16 years and now live comfortably with my retired nurse/wife. Yes, you can switch careers in later life, but I recommend doing so with Divine approval.5 points

For those of you who know me in the real world, I have over 20 years ROV experience. Nowadays I run ROV projects for Oil and Gas Companies. I have always loved products made in the USA. Recently I purchased my first Ocean Crawler Dive watch. I like it so much that I reached out to the owner of Ocean Crawler and offered him my Ball watch for 3 future releases, he accepted, and I could not be more pleased. As I said American made. The Ocean Crawler Core Diver watches are guaranteed to 2000 feet, this is overkill I know but they actually have very expensive pressure machine and put them through the ringer before they leave their facility. The Black and Orange dial watch pictured on my wrist I am wearing now. The Blue Dial Ocean Crawler with the leather strap in the picture is coming to me after Jan 31st, and is one of the 3 I get for my Ball Oceaneva is another Micro Brand here in the USA. These folks make a diving watch that is guaranteed to 3000 meters. I reached out to them and asked if they would like me to test their 3K meter watch. The Gold one pictured on my wrist. I wore this throughout the Holidays. It is a great watch. Currently the ROV boys have it and we will strap it to the frame of the ROV and video we will be working at 5137 Feet, and see what happens. Oceaneva gave me the watch to keep, and is sending me a personal one for doing this. I will try and put the video and results on here in the next couple of weeks4 points

I have had my right knee replaced and planning to get the left one done after some foot repairs. Yes your assessment of the situation is correct it ain’t no fun. However this is what i found: 1to 4 weeks you think i should not have done this. 4 to 7 weeks you will think this may work out ok. About 8 weeks on you will say this is the best thing I have ever done. Just stay current on pain meds, keep a lot of ice around and do the exercises and you will be happy. It’s not a fun recovery but worth all the effort4 points

Spent a dozen years in retail/retail management. Just shy of 10 years ago I said screw that and started driving truck. I was making as much in driver training as I did as a Walgreens manager. It was an excellent choice. That said, you’re either built for this job or you ain’t.3 points

I did but it involved a return to school. My wife did and used her previous education plus some new industry specific training to make the jump. For me I quit my IT related job to start a second temporary career in the restaurant business that allowed me to work nights and return to school. I did a couple years back in school to get started in my new machining and eventual engineering role in the hard parts manufacturing world. I was experiencing extreme burnout in the IT world so I have been infinitely happier after more than 15 years in manufacturing and engineering. My work is interesting (to me), I have had some great experiences, and made some great friendships. I got to travel the world which was good at the time but eventually I changed roles so I did not have to do much traveling anymore. My wife spent 20 years in logistics and intermodal freight management. She eventually started her own business with two partners but did so at the worst possible time when the industry and the economy itself went into a major free fall. With the business failing and no good prospects for transitioning back to a role with a decent company, since no one was hiring at the time, she took a handful of database / SQL / and related IT courses. We scrapped together a few thousand dollars to allow her to take the classes. She managed to talk her way into healthcare analytics role for a major health care company in town after doing some creative spinning of her past logistics and marketing degree and employment roles. Within a year she was back to making just as much as her best year in her logistics career. Within 5 years she had more than doubled her salary, within 10 years she had tripled it. She now works as a senior project manager / product owner in the Healthcare/health insurance management data industry. She does not regret the change one bit and wishes she had done it a decade earlier. Her stress level is much lower, benefits are better, income is significantly better, and she actually likes most of her coworkers. She also is able to work 100% remote. Sort of odd that I was in IT and hated it bad enough to get out while she hated her career choice in logistics so bad she got out to go into IT but you have to find the groove that makes you happy. Her brain was built to stare at data, code, and Gantt charts. My brain was built to look a blueprints, geometric dimensioning & tolerancing, CMM reports, and G Code.3 points

Anyone here made a major leap to a new career? I'm curious what your experience was like and how you prepped for it. For context, I'm 45 and watching the rate of change within the tech world. I have spent my entire career chasing cutting/bleeding edge and I'm still able to keep up with the trends, but who's to say I will be able to do that in my 50's or even into my 60's. Expecting this, I started down the management track some time ago, but it never hurts to explore your other options... especially with AI running amuck.2 points

From my experience (not knee surgery yet), the doctor fixes you, but the therapist heals you.2 points

Had mine done a couple of years ago. I hope they gave you an ice water machine that circulates it around the knee, life saver. was on mild oxy, 10mg & kept in front of the pain. Sorry you're in so much pain, good luck & prayers for your recovery.2 points

My wife has hsd two. The doctor told her they sometimes do both of them at the same time for a man because after he has one, he often will not come back for the second one. Be sure to take a pain pill about 30 minutes before physical therapy.2 points

Blending my personal experience with the 'better' brands and only what I have read of newer Taurus, I find myself looking at Taurus for my next 44. S&W earned their reputation. But there is a reason why so many here will only buy older ones. Their current product is also hit and miss from the recent purchases. More miss than hit. You cant debate when you get a good on they are nice. Colt has yet to solve their QC issues unfortunately. However they now have great customer service and stand behind their product. Something that Smith either no longer does or is hit and miss in that department as well. Hopefully luck of the draw is on my side with the Taurus.2 points

Community college is how I learned to stick weld, Mig is 100x easier, if you plan on buying a mig welder for home use, buy it, practice and watch YT videos for tips, you'll do fine. tip 1: don't buy a 110v welder from HF or Northern, don't care if it's flux core or gas, there garbage and won't weld for $hit!2 points

Its tough. Everybody wants market specific experience. The more technical or niche your expertise is, the more difficult it becomes to make a lateral move or advanced move. I left a company after 30 years with international experience in sales, management, product management, and marketing positions within that company and wanted to leave the industry. Even with demonstrable skill sets and solid performance records, it was difficult to find companies willing to consider a candidate outside of their specific industry/market. I did have several offers during a year of searching that were good, just not in the location I wanted to live. In the end took a great position with a competitor in the same industry/market. I would say develop a broad range of skills, document your achievements within the positions you hold and have patienec when you explore other avenues.2 points

I took a MIG class at The Forge in Nashville. It was just an introduction and it made for a fun evening. They did a good job and I plan on going back to take the TIG class they offer. I think getting the fundamentals from a little hands-on training, get a hold of a welder and some metal, fire up the YouTube and start burning away, is a good way to go about it. I have looked for classes that were made for the hobbyist but they all seem to be intro classes like this or full "degree" type programs. This is my plan. https://www.theforgenashville.org/2 points

A quick google search show one in Murfreesboro, Nashville, and Shelbyville. Your location shows Spring Hill. I guess near is a relative term. You can learn way more than a fella should know watching youtube videos.2 points

@ironsniper1 feel free t shoot me a PM. I’m in your area and I have a mobile welding business. Unfortunately TIG is what I do the least of…mainly stick on heavy equipment repairs and mig on most fabrication projects. Some SS TIG, but only a couple times a year. I would brace yourself for spending a minimum of a couple grand on a decent TIG machine. Miller has a couple small units that mig, stick, and TIG but you’ll be a few grand in once you set it up to all three processes. But feel free to reach out and I’ll give you whatever help/advice that I can.1 point

I took a welding class in college and did a lot of TIG work on our race car chassis. I really enjoyed welding. Manipulating molten metal is fun. A decent TIG welder will be pricey. The last ones we got for work (AC) were about $13k. I'd agree to avoid the cheap ones and get a Miller, Lincoln, etc. with 240V input. MIG is faster, easier, and cheaper for making metal pieces stick to each other, but not nearly as pretty. Good TIG welds are like fine art.1 point

Dad had full replacements on both knees a couple months apart. Yeah, it hurts. A lot. He was happy to get the first one done. He was gritty about the 2nd. Dad took the opiates for a few days and switched to advil after that. The surgery pain will go away. The hip pain you may not know you have because of how you've been compensating for the knees will go away too. You'll find it odd to walk without pain and without hobbling. My best advice from his and a few other people's experience is to use the ice water circulator and do the therapy. Then do the therapy. After that, do more therapy. The flexibility will go away and the scar tissue will make it hurt if you don't keep after it. That's not super encouraging, but it will feel much better in the long run.1 point

The restaurant world was a temporary period for me. A means to the goal of getting back to school and into my real career in the engineering/manufacturing world. I enjoyed it, I could do it again, but it is a bit of a young mans game at times. I worked nights out of necessity and while I function fine doing that I did not want it long term especially on the north side of 50.1 point
