  2. I restored function to a classic Browning "A5" Auto-5 this weekend. Unlike many modern autoloading shotguns, the A5 is recoil operated instead of using expanding gas pressure to cycle the semiautomatic action. John Browning's enduring design is over 125 years old, and it is still known as one of the most reliable, softest-shooting recoil operated shotguns in the world. Still, these century-old "humpback" beauties do require regular maintenance, and their older design is sometimes misunderstood. Without proper care and setup, they can malfunction. This customer gun was not properly ejecting, leading to double feeds that meant the birds were getting away. The main recoil spring is tuned by a set of bronze beveled rings, and steel friction rings. If they are not installed properly, they can lead to short stroke cycling, or worse, battering of the receiver and action. The right number of rings have to be installed in the right order and orientation to match the ammo being used. In this case, these rings were installed in the wrong order, and backwards. This led to the bronze ring being heavily gouged around its circumference, and the steel friction ring getting a significant burr on the active edge. This, in turn, gouged the magazine tube and bound up the spring during cycling. The stock also has an oft-forgotten recoil spring and channel inside it. Even professionals, unfamiliar with the A5, often forget this spring and channel when performing a cleaning. Sure enough, this bolt spring channel was heavily clogged, and was also contributing to the malfunctions. All cleaned and repaired with new rings, this Browning is ready to hunt for another century.

  4. So I have more to add (the 45-70, but I’m doing a little work on it) but here is my newest project. Marlin 1893 chambered in 38-55 circa 1900. It’s only a barreled action. So she will need a bit of work. I have a stock and forend on the way (although they are for a carbine) which need finishing as well.

  14. I have for sale or trade a Type 56 SKS in 7.62x39. It is in original configuration, and all serial numbers I see are matching. Hammer forged chrome lined barrel. These imports were thought to have have come from Albania, and there is a little bit of trench art on the stock. I have had this one for a while and put maybe 80 rounds through it with no issue. It is a great shooter, just selling off some of my duplicates. Asking $500, or trade for other milsurps, or a 16” Mid-length upper. I am in the Maryville area. Thanks for looking!

  16. BUMP for a pretty guitar. That's some beautiful maple in that top. I'm pretty sure that's Lemon Burst color. I think Honey Burst had darkened edges. I have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard in Desert Burst and these things play great with a classic tone. With all the accessories thrown in, this is a nice setup for someone looking to pick up a good quality guitar without getting into stupid money. GLWS!

  20. I also own a model 28-2. I also use it with Pachmayr grips. I purchased it new about 1972. It came with nice wooden grips. Was a sock drawer gun for years, and the pistol that got me into reloading. This pistol is the real deal. If one wants a N frame S&W revolver in 38/357, this would be a good choice. Also, the 28 prices are rising. GLWS

  25. Setting friction rings correctly is pretty easy. And replacement rings are readily available and not expensive. Anyone with one of these fine guns, or the similar Remington Model 11, should do this as part of an annual inspection!

  26. If anyone is in Nashville tomorrow and wants to check this out, please do so and let us know your thoughts. Among the topics to be presented are Red Flag Laws and Firearms Permits. My own opinion of this group is it is a group that advocates for stricter gun control laws. The group is funded by the Lubetzky Family Foundation. Among the stated goals of the Lubetzky Family Foundation is the following: "the goal of the project is to advance liberal democratic values". https://facebook.com/events/s/tennessee-solutions-reveal-on-/255799844039042/

  32. When you take a pic, the pic has the axis in which it was taken included in the exif file. Your phone automatically "rights" the photo regardless of the exif. When you upload, some software reads the exif and posts the photo that way. To fix it, edit the pic on your phone, either crop it, resize it or what ever, some will flip the photo according to the exif and allow you to flip it upright. Save the file then post it.
