  7. I have for sale or trade a Type 56 SKS in 7.62x39. It is in original configuration, and all serial numbers I see are matching. Hammer forged chrome lined barrel. These imports were thought to have have come from Albania, and there is a little bit of trench art on the stock. I have had this one for a while and put maybe 80 rounds through it with no issue. It is a great shooter, just selling off some of my duplicates. Asking $500, or trade for other milsurps, or a 16” Mid-length upper. I am in the Maryville area. Thanks for looking!

  11. Boy, I stepped in it there, didn't I? I think the lid would blow right off the can of AL-7 below, not so sure about the Unique can. That was actually a pretty good design, and as pressure inside the can goes up, the lid is held tighter. Can you read the price tags on those cans? $2.75.

  21. You're intentionally putting an abrasive compound into a set of sliding surfaces for the purpose of advancing wear. Odds are that there are only one or two very small tight areas. The lapping compound will affect the entire surface cutting into areas that don't need it. There's a fine line between just right and too much. If the gun functions correctly, just shoot it to break it in.

  22. As true, as that may be, a ruined gun is more expensive. You’re a lot better off, breaking it in the old-fashioned way and from there determining if there’s even a need to lap the slide. Material only comes off, it doesn’t go back on. So what gets done cannot be undone.

  25. I have a tool with a wood handle and different sized suction cups on each end I’ve used to lap engine valves. You spin it back and forth between your palms. There’s not really a secret to lapping. You’re just removing material in places you can’t readily get a sanding block. You know you’re done when no dull areas are left.

  26. That’s how it works. Will it not operate properly as is?

  27. I've not lapped a 1911, but that's how you lap stuff. I'd clean it up and look with magnification pretty frequently to confirm the progress.

  30. That's actually not a screw-on lid. To remove it, you press on the center and the lid "pops" outward along the circumference and you just lift it off. To reinstall it, you push in around the circumference and it pops back on again. Pretty clever, really, but manufacturing costs have to be higher than a regular screw-on lid.

  36. I guess I have faith in revolvers because every crisis in my life was successfully handled by a handgun. Starting form a very early age when my father contracted tuberculosis then purchased a pre-model 10 for my mother to protect us with. He was sent to a sanatorium in Ashville N Carolina in 1949/50. Shortly after he was taken away from us, mother had to use it to stop a drunk who came to our home and made an attempt to get in our house. No locks on the door, but a case knife slid in the door frame to keep unwanted visitors out. Had several more incidences where a revolver was used successfully to protect me. Last time was about 8 years back I had 3 25ish guys try to accost me while walking to my mailbox and I had a revolver in my pocket. The availability and willingness to use it saved me from a beating, once again, in my own front yard. I have faith in revolvers from experience. May not work next time, no naivety here, if it happens, but faith in God will take care of the rest. I am sure plenty here have had similar experiences in our long lives. Edited to add; Smitty, use your revolver with confidence. They will do the job for individual citizens. Just familiarize yourself to us it well.

  38. Dealing with pistol optics and RDSs, a torque screwdriver / wrench is money well spent. I've been using the Wheeler FAT driver and it does the job so far. If it saves you from breaking just one screw off in a slide, it'll more than pay for itself.

  39. My training session, yesterday, went great. I have never had 2 people pick up shooting accurately this quick before. I had a mother, son, and father out that I attend church with. The father (mid 40ish) asked me if I would introduce/teach his 23 Y O son to shoot handguns. The father had shot before, but the son had not. I told him to bring his wife along if she was interested and she came. She told me she would watch so I did not push her. They arrived at 9:30 and we sat down at our kitchen table, and I had out about 9 handguns. Talked safety for a while then explained the handguns we had out. We then went to the firing range in my back yard. I Started them out with 22 L R revolver, then 38 Spl revolver, and finished with 9MM pistol. We stayed with Smith Wesson handguns for the brand. First, started with a alloy frame model 317-3, 8 shot, 22LR revolver w 3" brl. Moved up to a SW Model 65, 3" 6 shot Lady Smith 38Spl/357 Mag Revolver. Only fired 38 Spl practice in this revolver. Then finished with a 15 shot M P 9 C 2.0 pistol 4" brl. We took about 2 hrs in time. First allowed the son to shoot the 22 LR. He was extremely nervous. His hands were shaking so I sat beside and reassured him how the revolver was going to react, how to align the Green Pipe sights, and just gently talked him "easily" through the first shot. After the first shot we were off to the races. He was surprised but took it well as he emptied the 8 shots. I always like them to think about what the just did for a few minutes their first-time firing. I find they come back much more assured of what was happening. He never looked back. Next, I asked his mom if she wanted to try it, as all the while taking to her after her sons every shot and allowing her to watch intently. She decided to try it. Well long story short, we created a monster. She shot all 3 guns as had no problems and accepted the increased power of the other 2 calibers. So did the son. We were shooting at a 12" steel target and 25 feet. None of them missed the target with over 2 or 3 shots of everything we fired. The dad joined in and shot all 3 handguns very methodically and they observed and learned from him. After dad both wanted to fire some more. We took out 100 rounds of 38 spl practice ammo, large box of 22 LR, and 100 rounds of 9 MM practice. We fired 300 rounds total, and they all had no problem hitting almost every shot on steel. They told me this morning that the day was a total blast, and they enjoyed the outing. The son, quiet boy, came and shook my hand and really thanked me. I could tell they all had a lot of confidence and most probably handguns are in their future. The Mom told me it really empowered her much more than she had realized, after they got home, and really had time to digest the outing. My mission was totally successful. WE had a pretty good day.
