I'm with you Sir. On many levels. And I too lost my Bride just a bit over 2 years ago. It's a profound experience that simple words can't express. She and I both came to the same conclusion several years ago. The commercialization of Christmas creates a frenzied madness in some people and avoidance and disengagement from them was our strategy and remains mine. There's simply no need to expose yourself to such shenanigans. WE always gave to those we love (money not obligatory junk) and those we could help with no expectations or desire for such. So I guess I too will proudly proclaim "I'm a Grooge!" But I'm still gonna watch Die Hard after the family goes home. And Thank the Good Lord for his many Blessings.8 points

I guess I’ll call myself thankful to get to spend a few days and share a meal with people that I truly love. My mom has a habit of buying people presents that are things they’d never buy for themselves. I asked her about it one time and she said, “you and your sister are productive members of society. You never call and say the kids are going hungry or we’re going to lose the house or anything like that. I’m glad to get the chance to do something nice.” I recognize that’s a privilege a lot families may not have - for a whole lot of reasons. Life is complicated sometimes. But, that’s something that I’ve tried to incorporate into my own life. Sometimes it’s nice to do something really nice for someone with no expectation of them doing anything in return.5 points

Do they have Calhoun's in middle TN? I try to avoid going there at all costs. The owner does not have a great reputation and the food hasn't improved since the 90's.2 points

Little back story on this buck. I took over this lease 5 years ago. I remember putting cameras out for the first time during the spring of 2017. A time when you would think bucks have shed their antlers. But to my surprise I get this buck on camera. He was a wide 6 pointer then but still in velvet. I thought that was really weird. All year long I had pictures of him and he was always in velvet. As time when on I realized this guy never once shed his antlers nor his velvet. I had thought he might have been a doe or something happened to him. After about the 3rd year I knew I wanted to shoot this deer and solve the mystery. I had talked to others that hunt around me and they had this buck in camera a few years prior to me taking over this lease. I had hunted this deer for 2 of the 5 years I've had the lease but by the time hunting season came he disappeared. Fast forward to this velvet season. I was hunting one of my favorite stands and had several bucks show up. Had a really big 8 come in and I was about to pull the trigger on my crossbow when I seen "helmet head" walk in. I knew right away what buck I was going to shoot. I flung a bolt his way and made a great shot. He ran around 100 yards with an easy blood trail. I was amazed how crazy his antlers had become over the 5 years. He went from a really nice wide 6 to something weird, unique and even ugly looking. He just kept breaking off and things grew weird. When I rolled him over to gut him I had noticed he had the hose but not the nuts. The poor guy never grew them out. That explains why he was always in velvet and never shed. Was a bittersweet end to "helmet head". I know hes crazy and ugly looking but what a great challenge to hunt him and finally get my hands on him. He will do justice on my wall in the trophy room. We estimated the buck to be 8 plus years given the history with him in the area.2 points

When possible could people posting movies they like say where they saw. Either a streaming service, network, theater, etc. If it isn't something I subscribe to, It saves me looking it up.2 points

Same with my adult kids. They now prefer cash or gift cards. I don’t require gifts for myself for Christmas, birthday or anniversary. I have everything I want and need. No need wasting that money on me. I’m a giver.2 points

I intentionally avoided this thread until now because I figured it would be full of a bunch of mushy Merry Christmas and emotional BS. Now I see that many of you feel the same way about Christmas as I do. I got completely fed up with the commercialized greedfest that Christmas has become a long, long time ago. Then there's the fact that my wife passed away in December. That's not to even mention the crowds, craziness and stupidity that abounds anywhere you try to go. Truth is that from Black Friday until about the second week of January, I make it a point to avoid all retail stores just so I don't have to deal with the idiots. The so-called holiday season brings me no joy at all. I'm half Grinch and half Scrooge. I'm a Grooge. The only people I give gifts to are my kids. And I just give them money to buy whatever they want. I sure don't know what they want or need. I also tell them not to get me anything. If I want or need something, I just go buy it. No point in them wasting their money on me. Ok fellow Grooges, all together now: BAH! HUMBUG!2 points

I looked and there are a few threads about a member's dog(s) here and there, but I was surprised that we don't have ONE big thread of all the doggos on TGO. So, let's fix that. ^^^ This is Tiberias, or Tigh for short. Yeah Tigh is spelled weird but I'm also a Battlestar Galactica nerd and fans of the show will recall that the XO of the Galactica was named Tigh. Anyway, he's a pure bred German Shepherd Dog and currently 4-months old. He was a rescue and we were fortunate to be called this past Monday and asked if we wanted to come get him. And yes, we most certainly did. Tigh is proving himself to be the goodest boy possible. Super loving, super loyal, and also already very protective of his new house and his new pack. We're thrilled to have him. So, so me your dogs!1 point

I have 3 kids age 5, 3, and 1. To see the joy and excitement for them as the build up to Christmas is fun, I’m not gonna lie. But for me I completely get anxiety about buying gifts for sisters and brothers in law etc. not because of money really but just the idea that we have to buy a gift to represent some form of love? How about we just exhange heartfelt “I love you’s” and have a drink? I’d love to reserve the gift giving for children but alas no one listens to me. My wife and I probably Huy too much for Christmas but we really do try to keep it moderate as it can be overwhelming for small children plus we want to set an example that we “don’t get everything”. Now my mother in law who had excessive amounts of discretional funds is another story. She buys so much ..ish that the kids are tired before all the presents are unwrapped. That gives me the same anxiety they @Erik88 is feeling I’m sure. Just unadulterated consumerism. But it’s tough to get it reeled in. At the end of the day we teach our kids about the true meaning of Christmas and as they get older we’ll strive to drive it home more as they’re ability to grasp the concept grows. Until then I hope Nana saves the Reciepts because 75% of the ..ish is going back where it came from.1 point

Godzilla Minus One was a fun ride. It's in Japanese subtitled in English. It has a bit more of the nostalgic original Godzilla feel than the more recent movies, but without being totally 50s/60s campy Napoleon is a snooze fest If you've seen the first 2 Trolls movies, Trolls: Band Together is fun. Not as good as the first one, but way better than the second one. Silent Night sucks. Very predictable and unrealistic. Nothing at all like the super fun Violent Night from last year. If you haven't seen Violent Night with David Harbour....watch it! I'm glad I have the AMC subscription so I'm not paying more for these tickets . . . I plan to see Wonka, Poor Things, and Ferrari this weekend or next week.1 point

Here's my daughter, Maggie, with our purebred yellow labs Daisy and Shelby, and our pitbull / cattle dog mix, Barrett. We have always had a dog since we first got our own house. The kids grew up with a big 90lbs pitbull / black lab mix, Sebastian, who was so gentle that he'd let them bounce on his head, and so intimidating that the Jehova's Witnesses stopped knocking. Sebastian was a rescue, just like every dog we've had since. He was a 7 month old that was too much puppy for his original family to handle. Being black and a pit mix, he was not likely to be adopted. We found him at the pound on his last chance month, and he was the best-behaved dog anyone could ask for. When we moved to a house with property, Sebastian gained a little brother, Scout. He was a cattle dog / shepherd mix that looked just like a half-sized German shepherd. A lifelong puppy-sized short-haired shepherd that leapt up cliff faces like a mountain goat. He was a street rescue from Calexico. Injured in his first weeks of life, a dog charity imported him to the US. Whatever happened to him down there left a permanent impression on him, because he was extremely, inconsolably aggressive to only one kind of person: Hispanic males. He was a mixed mutt from the streets of Mexico; he was our Racist Street Taco. Barrett was a rescue from the pound; friends picked him up in Texas as he was about to be put down. He'd had a hard first year; he grew up in the shelter and overcame Parvo. My friends tried keeping him but he had a submissive peeing habit that they couldn't beat. They drove him 1000 miles to us in Chattanooga just to give him another shot. It's been six months and there's no more peeing. I like dog training. His purebred sisters are rescues, too. They were $1000 AKC puppies who were adopted by a single lady who works 10+ hours in an ER and lives in a condo. Apparently, she decided that might not be the best recipe for success with two 60lbs dogs after the puppies destroyed the condo a few times over and earned her some HOA violations. We agreed to take them in, and now they're right at home on acres upon acres of private ranch. We never go out to buy a dog. There are so many in need already, and somehow they seem to find us at just the right time. We love our dogs, and we're glad to have a place for them.1 point

Thank you all for sharing the pics of your pups! Just a quick post before I head in to work a bit. Good on you @A.J. Holst ! Awesome helper you’ve got. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Boo before and can confidently say she is a “Good Girl”, but I would not want to get on her bad-side. My pups, 2 sets of Pekingese (Bastian & Lil then Buckley & Grace) over a 25 year period are in Heaven guarding my Bride. But I know Rhonda has her hands full with them! Entitled little devils but they gave us a lot of love in their time. (My son just sent this pic to me after I told him about my vicarious living through it). Thanks again to all! The little guy is Poe. He’s resting on his sister Nala. Nala is a squirrel killer. Poe couldn’t be bothered with such.1 point

Matilda and Venus. Our Great Dane and our step dog. Venus belongs to my step daughter Timmy, our 7-9 year old part Dane rescue with Matilda Timmy and Matilda competing for Mama's attention. Don't mess with Mama, they don't like that. Timmy is 140lbs of attitude, he knows what you tell him, he just decides if and when he will do it. Matilda is 3 years old, covid dog, she sleeps between us. Venus is a big round ball of chicken. the pic of her laying with Matilda is because she couldn't get out of the corner.1 point

This is Cody, my baby. 105 pounds of rotten to the core. In the second picture he's helping me with my building project. Well, more like supervising. The most talkative feller I've ever had. Plus, he's a promising contender for the World Title of King of the Belly Rub. In my world there has never been a more loved and protected dog. I call him my son.1 point

This is Koira. We kinda inherited her from my youngest daughter who, during a rough spot, was unable to care for her. Now she's a part of the family for sure and thinks she's Queen. VERY loyal and loving dog, probably the most so I've ever seen. She's very attached (almost neurotically) to my wife, but likes me ok too. I think she's around 5 years old.1 point

This is Shadow, aka the galloping goober. 100lbs of dumb. He'll be 4 on Valentines day. His dad is a black lab and mom is a boutique big terrier. Their owners (friends from kids' school) didn't think mom was old enough yet and went on vacation. He has 12 siblings.1 point
