As is well documented, I like lever guns. I parted ways with one recently (Thanks @Rob112o) in anticipation of buying a Marlin in 44-70 or another old Winchester SRC. However, I was checking local haunts for odd ammo and such and one of them had a used Marlin Golden 39a for sale. While I was not looking to buy a 39a, it was definitely on the “list”. This poor rifle was filthy. The bore looked good, so I think the PO must have cleaned it at times, but the action was filthy, as were all the nooks and crannies. Also, it had obviously been left too close to a campfire as side of the stock was charred and the butt plate was missing (it had an old ratty butt pad covering it. The rifle had a period correct Weaver V-22 rimfire scope as well. Unfortunately, the eyepiece was broken I looked it over and talked to the counter guy. It was listed at $600 but he offered to let it go at $500. I was going to wait because of some GB auctions I was bidding on, but when I checked them, I had been out bid. Fate was telling me to buy it. I figured that would have to drop another $150+ on a replacement factory stock, but the price was good. I wish I had taken before photos of how grungy the entire rifle was. I took it apart completely and cleaned up the metal parts with denatured alcohol. The stock and forend were cleaned up with denatured alcohol and acetone using 0000 steel wool to remove the grunge and old finish. The stock had been lacquered at some point and took more work. Since I was initially planning on replacing it, I was more aggressive and used some 150 and 400 grit sandpaper. I was able to remove the finish and the loose burnt wood until I got down to decent “charred” wood. Once done, I went back with several applications of Danish Oil. I think it turned out pretty nice. I actually like the look of the charred areas. I have a “new” butt plate on the way. Once I get it installed, I will see how much modification it will need to match new contour of the end of the stock. I can always replace the stock if I want to, but I like that I have saved the original stock as best as I can. Still on the hunt for a 45-70.4 points

Not concerned. This group cannot pass new laws and Congress has shown they won't either. This is one of those feel good measures to show they are "doing something".3 points

I was checking my State Representatives and just now discovered that, as of last November, I'm now in a completely different State House district. Where I was in District 97, I'm now in District 88. They moved the line less than 1/2 a mile and this is what happened. What's more, my State Representative is a Democrat! The new district starts in downtown Memphis, runs north through Frayser, east through Raleigh and eventually drops south into Bartlett where it just does include my house. I mean I can almost throw a rock into my old district from my house. 3 Blocks! They moved the line 3 blocks! Who the Hell designed this thing? It wanders all over the place. Not only is my Rep a Democrat, but the way this thing is laid out, the vast majority of the district is too. No way this guy is going anywhere. I guess I shoulda paid better attention when they redrew the districts last year. Not that it woulda done any good. I didn't have any say in it. Funny thing is, the guy I've been e-mailing and griping so hard at for the last year ain't even my Rep anymore. Oh well, he had it coming. I guess now I need to introduce myself to the new guy.1 point

I've mentioned before how a touch of arthritis in my right hand makes it difficult for me to shoot the traditional Colt/Ruger style SA revolvers. Simply put, the shape of the plow handle grip causes the back of the trigger guard to beat the holy hell outta my middle finger knuckle. It only takes about one cylinder full to have me bleeding. So, in order to get my Cowboy fix, I've turned to other revolvers common in the old west. According to TV and movies, you'd think that every cowboy in the old west carried a Colt SAA. Not exactly true. The Colts were indeed quite popular, they weren't the only revolvers used by a long shot. For my needs, I've settled on the Remington Model 1875 and the Smith & Wesson Schofield both in .45 Colt caliber. You will note that the grip frame on both guns sits just a little bit further back on the frame that the traditional Colt style. This gives my poor knuckle just enough space to avoid damage. I might also mention that both of these guns originally came with 7-7.5" barrels. I have opted for the more modern 5-5.5" lengths as they just handle better for me. The Remington Model 1875 was their answer to the Colt SAA. Its really just their extremely successful Model 1858 Percussion Cap revolver fitted with a bored through cylinder. Its just a tad bit bigger, beefier and heaver than the Colt, but proved to be very popular in the old west. Many preferred its slightly more "heft". The Remington was known to be favored by Buffalo Bill Cody and outlaw Frank James among others. The big bore S&W break tops were also quite common in the old west. The Number 3 American in .44 S&W was very popular. Colonel George Schofield modified the latch mechanism to make it easier for mounted troops to unload and reload the revolver with one hand. The U.S. Army purchased around 8000 Schofield revolvers for their troops. S&W chambered the Army guns in .45 S&W Schofield caliber as the cylinder was just a bit too short for the standard .45 Colt cartridge. The two cartridges are identical except for length with the colt being just a tad bit longer. Little known fact: to simplify the supply chain, most ammo issued to troops was .45 S&W Schofield as it worked in either the Colt or S&W guns. Most modern reproductions, such as mine, have a slightly longer cylinder and are chambered in the more common .45 Colt caliber. Well, there you have it. Other revolvers popular in the old west. There are others as well such as some of the early DA revolvers. Show 'em if ya got 'em!1 point

This is what happens when you have people who do nothing, contribute nothing to civilization, received welfare for generations, too lazy to work but not to lazy to get food stamps, live in government and subsidized housing that is free and looks like a bombed-out town in Ukraine, have no morals, lack responsibility and ethics, yet vote for honest taxpayers to give them more and more and take everything but still live like willfully ignorant jungle pigs (no offense to real pigs). This is democracy unrestrained by justice. No wonder Socrates didn't like democracy as this is the result.1 point

It’s going to be an ugly season I’m afraid. We saw last week that SEC teams are absolutely going to be a problem. Milton still has a rocket launcher for an arm but there has been no improvement in connecting on down field passes…since he started. That’s not entirely on him, but we are going to need to make big plays.1 point

I think the Liberals are pretty much a group of CRAZIES. And the Conservatives are pretty much a group of LAZY WIMPS. Eventually the CRAZIES are going to win. All we can hope for is to postpone it as long as possible. Just my opinion.1 point

Harris is an idiot. She's only the VP because Joe needed a black woman to round out his liberal ticket. Sadly, she's the best he could get. For the most part, she's kept in the background. When she does surface, she only embarrasses herself and the Dems. So go ahead and put her in charge of this gun violence office. She'll just screw it up like everything else she touches. BTW: rumor is that Joe is looking for a new running mate for 2024.1 point

Looks like an interesting project. Personally, I'm more than happy with my SA-35 as is. I went to Apex's site and looked these parts up. I noticed that the mag well requires the use of Apex's 17 & 19 round magazines and that you either need to use their grips or you'll have to cut your's to fit. I don't think I care for that. But I'm still interested to see how your gun turns out.1 point

RAR in 762x39 - First day out, First impressions. I put a Nikon P-300 BLK 2-7x32 BDC Scope with SuperSub reticle for trial. It’s mounted via ARMS 22 (low) throw rings (love these things) Have previously used this on an SKS-D but been on the shelf for years. The BDC reticle is for 300BLK ballistics and should more or less match 7.62x39, HOWEVER, I probably should have read up on the BDC aspects of this reticle. I zeroed at 100yds and easily hit my marks at 100 and 200 (at 1st hash mark down) but couldn’t hit a thing at or beyond 300yds. I’ve since read up and this reticle is meant to be zeroed at 200. But this is another matter. ACCURACY Thus far I have NO complaints about accuracy and expect I can do better. I grabbed some Barnaul FMJ as well as some Republic for the day. I’m guessing the latter is the same Vympel marketed as Golden Tiger (looks identical). They performed identically as far as I could tell. There was virtually no distinction between the two regarding POI and group size. I didn’t measure but I estimate all these groups mainly to be under 2” @ 100yds. It will be interesting to see how the old corrosive milsurps performs (later). http:// TRIGGER I don’t know why but I was under the impression the RAR had a two-stage trigger –no. Out of the box the trigger was unpleasant @ 5lb, 6oz with a gritty creep just before break. I ran the adjustment screw in/out a few times playing at several adjustment points and got it down to 3lb,10z but no better. Nice clean break but still a slight grit before the break. ERGO It’s a light handy rifle with moderate recoil and while the stock is really as cheesy as others have reported the form-factor / pistol grip is quite fine for my hand. Wood in the same format would be nicer. I may or may not think about that later. Frankly, I’m on the fence about even keeping this or perhaps contacting Ruger about the following. I believe I mentioned I do have an RPR in .308. That rifle’s action, while not exceptional, is very satisfactory/good. Beyond this I have little to no experience with new, production rifles. I mainly collect and shoot 20th century milsurps. After firing the RPR I can easily flip up the bolt handle with a couple fingers to cycle the next round with my eye barely leaving the scope’s site picture. One of my PU Snipers is as nice and perhaps smoother (depending on ammo) ACTION The action is miserable!!! Rough, chalky, dry feel with many bumps and obstacles to get the bolt forward and gturned to fire. A MAJOR effort to unbolt, draw back and cycle between rounds. I literally have to take my left hand and hold the buttstock to cycle the action. Much rough + kludge to force the bolt across the magazine and feed in the next round. The magazine drops easily when empty but I can sometimes, unintentionally force the bolt past the BHO follower feature. Seating the magazine up takes a bit of force and I’m not always sure it’s seated because, either way, it seats loosely. Several times I cycled nothing into the chamber realizing I needed to slam the magazine up into locked position. Again it’s always loose. CONCLUSION In the end I could live with the ergonomics and trigger. Shoots well, in fact, GREAT grouping for 7.62x39. I would think about investing in a better stock/chassis and perhaps alternate scope selection, but I’m not sure I can get past the action as is. It’s really awful. Cheap, crappy feel, like a toy! I know it’s not a top tier match gun but I find the RPR to be a pretty decent value for $1,200. Again, I have little experience with new, outta-the-box firearms. Was I expecting too much for a $450 bolt gun? Very unpleasant operating this thing. Someone mentioned cycling a thousand times by hand to smooth out. Not sure I’m up for that. Should I be? Any word on how to deal with this action? I’m all ears.1 point

Going to be honest, I don't want to sell this one. I absolutely love this gun and for that matter, so does my wife and it has actually gotten her out to the range more often with me. Truly just an awesome shooter. That said, I've found myself with too much money tied up in too many things and need to free up some cash. $1200 FIRM is the price in which I have to let this go if someone wants it. For less, I'll keep it and sell something else. Or if the L1A1 I have posted here sells first, then I'll remove this posting. So if you want it, jump on it while you can. Of all the guns and other toys I have posted elsewhere, this is the one I'm most trying to justify just keeping.0 points

Right next door! I didn’t dine there, but I figure the shirt will bring in the chicks. The wife talked me into one of those bus trips that took us to the U.P. Aside from the 3 1/2 hours we spent on the side of the interstate with a blown tire, it was a lot more fun than I expected. Most everybody else on it we’re my parents’ age. This would be a great place for older single men to pick up women. Had my wife not been with me, I’m pretty sure I could have gotten my name on several wills.0 points

Over the years I have seen, observed and reasoned to the conclusion the Conservatives and the United States are we remember it are doomed. Conservatives, for the most part, simply want to live our lives as we see fit and be left alone to do so. Just leave us in peace to do our own thing without interference. Liberals, OTOH, are so absolutely convinced that their way is not just the right way, but the only way to the point that they feel a need, a mandate, an obligation, to convert everyone else to their viewpoint even if they have to use force. An if you won't convert, they'd rather you be dead than oppose them. They work together, not under any organized conspiracy, but simply because they all have the same goals. Like minds supporting each other in every aspect of our society. Then there is our public school system which has been run by liberals for at least the last 30 years or more. The dumbing down of America, revisionist history, condemning moral values and simply failing our children. They don't teach our children how to think, they tell them what to think. Basically, if you're under the age of 40 and a liberal, congratulations! You're exactly what the system intended you to be. A poorly educated, brainwashed drone willfully and blindly following the program. And therein lies the rub. Every year more and more of these drones reach voting age. Before long, us old school Americans are gonna be vastly outnumbered and forced to watch our beloved nation be destroyed from within. And there ain't a damned thing we can do to stop it.0 points

Harris: "We all can do something to control guns, held in the hands of those who are in control of their gun. This is crucial, since gun control involves controlling guns, and controlling those who control their guns. This kind of approach to controlling guns will stop the illegal control of guns to do the damage that a controlled gun can do to people who are not in control of their guns."0 points
