With all due respect, what he posted was not remotely like that and he did not insinuate it. Almost getting hit by a helicopter on base is different than catching a STD from a hooker in South Korea.4 points

I agree with this statement. Hearing it always feels weird, and I don’t need to be thanked for volunteering. As you know, when we signed on that line, we took an oath to put everything on the line In defense of our country. In return, the government guaranteed us that we and our families would be taken care of if we were injured or killed. Our government already wants to keeps citizens poor and mostly ignorant to continue to fill the ranks of the military on a volunteer basis, as well as working low wage jobs. The government would eventually have to return to the draft to fill its ranks if they also develop a reputation worst than they already have if youngsters see that the government actually taking care of veterans is a myth. This is my not in my backyard moment. I know the government needs to make cuts, but I’d suggest looking at all of the foreign aid we dish out first. That’s another issue for me, because I know in many cases foreign aid is strategically necessary to our national security. Oh well, as usual, I don’t have the answers. It’s just concerning for me when I think about all of the injured young warriors who probably won’t get the benefits they’ve earned.4 points

So, I'm going to briefly veer into the political just to back everyone off the cliff a bit. Bottom Line Up Front - there's a *ZERO* percent chance this becomes law. So now the details - roughly from memory - I can source it if people are interested. These proposed "cuts" are part of Kevin McCarthy's bill last week to use as a part of the negotiation in raising the debt ceiling. It calls for a $130B cut to non-defense discretionary spending below 2010 levels (which was the high-water mark if you will) by 2033. If you look at the federal budget like a pie - it's divided up into three major pieces: There's a big chunk that's "mandatory" spending. This is defense spending, entitlement programs like social security and medicare, farm subsidies, and veteran pensions. This is sort of a third rail of budgeting - that is there is law surrounding it - so it's not a part of the annual appropriations process. This is roughly 70% of the federal budget. Then there's "defense discretionary" - these are all kinds of military-related projects that fall outside the DoD's budget above. These are the weapons programs, ship building, raises for the military, etc. This was about $800B last year - or roughly 15% of the budget. Then there's "non-defense discretionary" - this is everything else. Education, transportation, and homeland security all fall into this category. Veteran's healthcare sits here as well. This is likewise about 15% of the total budget. This is the part they're willing to play with. To get to the levels proposed above you'd need to cut all of NDD by about 22%. Take VA-healthcare out of the mix and you'd need to cut the rest of it by about 58%. This is not a serious proposal for a lot of reasons. First and foremost - McCarthy can't get 218 votes amongst his caucus to pass it. For what it's worth - I doubt he can get 218 votes on anything budget related as there are some members of the caucus that seem pretty dead set on voting against any raising of the debt ceiling. Second, this is a non-starter everywhere else. Even when the GOP has been in power, they haven't even been able to come anywhere close to meeting these kinds of cuts in the past. They know this - that's why they're not proposing specific cuts or a path to get there. I could go on - but I'm going to step back out of the political and just reassure everyone that this isn't something that has any chance of becoming law in the immediate future. I do find it interesting that the VA is messaging like they did above. Call your representative, I guess. Two more notes on the way out. First, remember that the debt ceiling has nothing to do with future spending. It's about paying the note on debt that past Congresses have already incurred. Second, my prayer is that one day our country does at least as good a job of taking care of our veterans as it does making new ones.3 points

These all went to the Delayed Bills Committee - which means they went nowhere. To advance a bill out of delayed bills the Speaker, Majority Leader, and Minority Leader have to agree unanimously to advance them. The legislative session also closed for the year on Friday - so those are all dead. The governor is making a big push to call a special session to address gun reform - but we'll see if that happens. I doubt he'll call it at all if Sexton doesn't have the votes.2 points

Nice AKABLKVANDRIVER! Where is that tooling bench? I could go pick it up and, uhh, haul it back. I mean, for you of course…. Just kidding. I need to get around to building myself one like that. gregintenn, your holsters look plenty good to me I was impressed with the lacing technique. Great work on the carving. Now that my wrist is healed up I’m going to get caught up and then start working on learning the tooling. Right now I’m still skeered to try the carving. Mine would probably look more like whittling.2 points

Like you said, foreign aid is tricky, but there's obvious fat to trim in some areas. There's a lot of other places we should look to trim too, like bloated benefits for politicians and bureaucrats and many other wastes.2 points

I totally agree, and as another member mentioned, it’s seems odd. Secondly, it’s a political issue that shouldn’t be. Service members are held accountable by their oath and the UCMJ when necessary. Who’s really going to hold Congress accountable? History has shown they’re not being held accountable by voting.2 points

Once Fox settles the Smartmatic suit, they'll almost certainly be facing a stockholder revolt. I'd guess at least part of the reason for the (supposed) housecleaning is an attempt to head that off ...1 point

Good spin. That’s news to those who want to believe it, but the Dominion defamation lawsuit is what got Carlson booted. Rumor is there are a few more election deniers and January 6th inciters at Fox News to be released in the very near future.1 point

It turned out to be a beautiful day today. Sunny skies, 63 degrees and a slight wind. I grabbed my stuff and headed to the range. One picture is worth a thousand words. Mozambique speed drills at 10 yards. Draw, 2 to the body, 1 to the head., reholster and repeat. Not bad for a decrepit old man. All in all I shot about 300 rounds. Not even the slightest bobble. I didn't even notice the heavy trigger. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it. Looks like I have a new gun in the carry line up.1 point

It was an 2012 Obama era determination that the ATF was attempting to overturn. I agree with you that if the other side was still in control of house, the ATF ruling would not be challenged. On a side note, a speaker mentioned shooters being under the influence of prescription drugs and wondered what could be done. Here’s my answer.1 point

It's a terrible thing that servicemen were blamed for poor political decisions during the Vietnam war. Besides our thanks you probably also deserve an apology for being sent into a no-win situation by politicians who were unwilling to do what was necessary to win.1 point

I also used to listen on the radio because there was no tv coverage. I never thought I would quit watching. I used to go to both races at the Nashville fairgrounds in the 1970's . I still remember as a kid when Petty won 27 races in 1967. I was sitting right where Bobby Allison took down the fence at Talladega in I think 1986. I went to four to six races a year. I loved it for a long time. I just quit all at once. I got tired of the traffic, crowds, having to send my money to keep my tickets almost a year in advance, and NASCAR trying to make all the cars equal and none looking like the street cars. I don't think I left it as much as it left me. I could go on and on on this but I figure that's enough.1 point

I like Larson and because of my age, Chase Elliott because I always liked Bill. Larson was shaken after that hit; I've rarely seen the inner roll cage as mangled as it was on his car. And yes, Bubba AGAIN chose the wrong time to try a block . . . and wrecked.1 point

I started out listening to NASCAR on the radio ( no tv ). Later, watching on TV. Now, it's gone off the rails to me. Still watch some, including today. I long for the days when the CI & HP were on the hood.1 point

As a combat wounded 'Nam Vet, I waited 40+ years before someone thanked me for my service. It took awhile to get used to that, but now I'm grateful to hear it. Even little kids. Shows it came from the parents. Am I surprised by any cuts the Feds make? Not in the least!1 point

MTSA will host its first of the 2023 5th Saturday 2-gun matches on April 29. 5 stages, around 200 rounds total for both guns. (100 each). Lots of Pistol steel and mini Paper targets for the long guns. All within the bays. No long range steel for this match. https://practiscore.com/mtsa-2-gun-match-1/register1 point

You are well on your way! Looks great from everything I see. I wish my tooling bench was coming with us back to TN but most all I do now days is done via laser. Everyone wants something crazy or they want it NOW! And laser is just faster. No where near the stylized art of tooling! And with everything it takes up a ton of space in the trailer. I put up a pic of my rack. Figured only a fellow leather worker could appreciate the collection. Keep up the great work.1 point
