Well, as to buying guns and them not knowing, I will bet there are a good number of wives of members of this forum that are unaware of the true number of guns in the house.12 points

All very true. Here’s my working theory on supermajorities regardless of political party - but on full display right now in Tennessee. They don’t serve anyone well - even if you tend to agree with them - because they just don’t have to work that hard. As a result, the finished product usually is less than ideal because laziness or corruption or both affected the outcome. We’re seeing this in all kinds of ways in that so many of the bills they pass end up costing us a lot of money as they’re litigated into the next decade - and then don’t actually become law because they’re found to be unconstitutional. The majority party doesn’t care because they got their talking point and stuck it to their opponents. I *want* the other side to have competent, effective representation - because it’s better for all of us when that’s the case - even when I don’t agree with them. Jones or Pearson being back in the legislature won’t make a bit of difference at the ground level - because the current supermajority has already effectively silenced them on a daily basis. The incident two weeks ago could have been avoided at large had they just had the courtesy to let the minority members recognize the people in the gallery. But they’ve so effectively silenced them that they literally have no voice. That’s not going to change. But as they saying goes, “Democracy dies in darkness.” I’m supportive of both visibility and debate - even when I might disagree with it - because if the opposition doesn’t have a seat at the table I’m going to eventually give in to being lazy or corrupt or both.9 points

Shirking from public duty has become the sport of the educated and affluent. The same can be said for juries. When you consider how many smart, productive people find ways to get out of jury duty, you are generally left with people other than the best and brightest that our society has to offer. As we have been prone to say on TGO, we get the government that we deserve.8 points

You simply must have some semblance of decorum, civility, and rules, or else the Capitol would be reduced to a zoo exhibit. The movie “Idiocracy” rings truer each day.7 points

It was only a matter of time before their incompetence came to light. They were too comfortable in their arrogance.6 points

Looking at the warning signs that were exhibited prior to an incident like this is useful for learning how to be vigilant for them in your life, and the lives of those in your circle. Attempting to place blame on folks who do not have overt actions to caused them to share responsibility, like the parents in Michigan, serves no value. Her family was made a victim of her actions, just like the families of everyone involved with covenant. Not in the same way, but victims nonetheless and still deserving of compassion.5 points

That kid who’s parents knew he was screwed up, and gave him a gun anyway. And he shot up his school. THOSE were not decent parents.4 points

Very simple. No one really knows how many guns I own, regardless what I tell them or what they think they know. That’s the quickest way to help someone disarm you.4 points

If a red flag law is put into place, I will red flag the people that helped put it there. I will keep doing it until due process is put into place, red flag laws are removed, or I am removed.4 points

I don’t think just telling the police will prevent her from legally buying a firearm with out a red flag law. I do think that if it was my house, and I had any concerns, I would be looking around her room, even if she is an28yo adult. My house, my rules4 points
-
Without some type of red flag law, there was nothing to prevent her, an adult of legal age, from buying a firearm (or seven). I know we don’t want the ATF to start acting upon multiple gun purchases as a flag in and unto itself. If they did, many of us would be flagged.4 points

I, for one, simply do not believe that the three legislators were standing up for something they believe in. I believe that their whole performance, and performance is exactly what it was, was solely motivated by an attempt to make themselves look good to their party. Sadly, it worked. If they had been truly interested in making children safe, and also believed that more useless gun laws helped do that, then why didn't they introduce any bills towards that end. indeed, I've read that all 3 recently voted against bills that may have helped keep kids safer. No, these type of rabble rousers are all about their own notoriety. Gloria Johnson apologized and asked not to be expelled. When she was narrowly granted her wish, she was one of the first to cry racism. Racism? Come on, man.4 points

You're right about that. They day this all came out, I said a prayer for her parents too, because they're in the same boat. Regardless of her evil, her mom and dad are suffering as much as the other parents.3 points

I have both a son and a daughter that age. I'm not sure I believe it's possible to know everything they do or everything they're capable of. I don't think either would harm a fly, but if they did, I don't think it'd mean I wasn't a decent parent.3 points

Pretty much all politicians suck when you get right down to it, wouldn’t you agree?3 points

It is my understanding that they are a strong Christian family. Maybe that was one of the issues because she felt an outsider in her own family. I grieve for them. They lost their oldest child and can’t grieve for her without I’m sure feeling guilt for the families she destroyed and lives she disrupted.3 points

Getting treatment for mental illness and being a threat to others are two different things. She was legally allowed to purchase firearms. Her actions were illegal. There’s no way I’m notifying the police on a family member who hasn’t made threats or broken the law. I fear the call would be mishandled.3 points

I agree, but this is the same body that has allegedly allowed pedos to remain seated and when the public makes comparisons, the removal of the two young men appeared excessive.3 points

How do you punish a mass shooter who gets killed by police or dies by suicide?3 points

Well, I would hope that sensible red flag laws would be implemented, if they were. Any Tom Dick of Harry shouldn’t be able to flag someone. (I’m not hopeful they this is what will happen).3 points

Yes. We must have effective debate on differing ideas. The end goals are likely very similar, it the path to get there that's different. No one has an air tight position, there are flaws or pitfalls in any path. Debating with a mirror, preaching to the choir, etc. does not build consensus. If one group thinks the others are incompetent, there will be no resolution.3 points

Of course here’s the other thing that happens when you shine a light into a corrupt darkness: https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/2023/04/11/tennessee-gov-bill-lee-calls-for-order-of-protection-law-on-guns/70102868007/ They’ll do damn near anything to get that light off of them.3 points

Imagine this scenario. The "protestors" are Pro 2nd & Pro life Repub's. The Dem.s take the same course of action against them. The MSM would be praising the dem's for their courage. This scenario would fit the msm's narrative/agenda. Of course the msm is going to hammer the Repub's actions. JMHO FWIW Everyone I've talked to in different states applaud the action taken. They also support the laws protecting children, unborn babies & the 2nd Amendment.3 points

Sure, but just because someone is a true believer in something, it doesn't mean that the thing(s) that they believe in are valid, let alone right. What kinds of things do you see Jones shining the light onto? Anything truly good for the public?3 points

Call me a wimp, or something else if you prefer; but I've just never seen the attraction in intentionally burning out my taste buds. I prefer milder seasonings and more palatable foods. Flavor is one thing, but misery is another. Not saying no spices or seasonings at all, but I don't want to be miserable trying to eat my food. JMO3 points

I’ll avoid commenting on the particulars other than just to say the TN GOP did more to strengthen the minority party than dozens of effective operatives on the ground could’ve hoped to accomplish in a decade. Jones was reseated literally the next business day. Pearson will be seated similarly - and they got backed into a corner on agreeing to pay to agreed upon funding. Sexton got called out for actually residing in Davidson county - not the Crossville district he represents. Brian Manookian is threatening to start outing mistresses - starting with Sexton’s. Representative Johnson has been reassigned to her committees, and they’re reconsidering the language in Jones’ bills And to top it all off - they also got enjoined on their attempt to cut the metro council in half. Banner start to the legislative week. In any sane world Sexton wouldn’t survive as speaker - but it’s not like they’ve got better options in the likes of Faison or Lambreth.3 points

Memphis is 99.999999% sure to follow suit later this week. The 2 expelled reps will be back in their seats, emboldened to embrace more antics with a clear mandate to say "what are you going to do about it?", and the GOP looks like a bunch of racist hillbillies. All of which could have been avoided and contained if the TN GOP could see past the next 3 seconds and gone with a measured response like censure (nothing more than a formal reprimand that actually does nothing), removal or demotion in committees, and maybe a 3-day suspension or something and a clear warning to ALL members that any future transgression like that WILL result in expulsion. But they just can't seem to help themselves and played right into the DNC and the media's hands.3 points

I could be mistake, but I think that's the gist of the problem, the people who could deny her from buying guns didn't know she had mental issues and the people that knew she had mental issues didn't know she was buying guns. Unless I'm mistaken, this is where the disconnect lies. We gotta find a way to join these 2 sides of the equation w/out trampling on innocent peoples' rights.2 points

Problem is there's already hundreds of "sensible" gun laws on the books & they're never enough. There's always a new law or bill to destroy our Constitutional rights. The anti's want guns gone, period. Those that would give up freedom for security deserve neither.2 points

From what Mac is saying, it sounds like they would not even allow the minority party to call on people to speak. I'm not condoning screaming into a bullhorn but it doesn't seem like discussion was allowed. If they can't debate on the floor, what are they even there for?2 points

Back in the day when I was young and dumb I let a few friends talk me into trying some hot chicken wings. That was my only experience with hot chicken. I had white blisters in my mouth for about a week. Never again and that was about 40 years ago......LOL.2 points

I get quality 1000%. But I'm not a fan of "top of the line or nothing". I bought this Fenix pd35 years ago, on a whim. I'm not kidding when I say I've beaten the literal hell out of this thing and it keeps on going! It's most certainly chinesium...but man it's rock solid. I would trust my life with it, no doubt. For that alone, I can't justify $300+ on a local brand. However, I don't begrudge anyone who does.2 points

Exactly, that's the way I feel. We are being systemically criminalized. They have activated their social Brown Shirts now known as ANTIFA to create social unrest. Now follows the propaganda for totalitarian control to save the children. Adolf Hitler Please forgive me for going political on this. And maybe I should just stock up on tinfoil...but dang man it's almost like a screenplay.2 points

Worth the time to read from Jonathan Turley on Instapundit: APRIL 10, 2023 JONATHAN TURLEY: Democrats Go Nuts in Nashville. “This month, there was an ‘assault on democracy’ in Tennessee. It was not three members halting the legislative process, but rather their expulsion. It appears that nothing says democracy like a bullhorn and obstructing legislative work.” Plus: “The full-throated support for the actions of the expelled legislators is a bizarre position for the Senate president who enforces the same rules in Washington, DC. Yet she was disgusted by sanctioning members who refused to allow their colleagues to continue legislative business because they lacked the votes for a gun control measure. Harris proclaimed ‘it’s about whose voices they were channeling.’ . . . These legislators were upset because they are in the minority and lack sufficient votes to get what they want. They were protesting the democratic process, not advancing its principles in shutting down the floor.” It’s always “democracy” if you’re channeling the voices of Democratic activists; it’s alway “insurrection” if you’re taking the other side. A great, on target assessment I'ma thinkin. leroy.2 points
