So the answer to the question that probably no one asked... Where has Oldironfan been? I mean He has not posted in close to two months and only visited once or twice to read the goings on. I bought a new bike and took off for a few weeks to ride. I had been planning a fly and ride trip over the Spring. I knew I had some time to take off work around the first of June so I was looking at big bore adventure bikes in Texas, Colorado, Oregon, California, and even a few in the northeast. The plan was to fly out and buy a bike then take the long way home over a couple of weeks. All that went out the window when I found a bike about an hour and a half down the road near Cookeville, TN. I picked it up near the end of May and promptly tore it apart to set it up for my needs and wired in some accessories. I then quickly revamped my plan for a ride during my time off. Should I go out to the east coast and places like Cape Hatteras? Nope, the weeks following Memorial Day and the official start of summer beach season would mean traffic and tourists, lots of them. That was out. Should I go south to ride the Florida Keys. See above plus it was going to be hot and swampy down there. Should I go West toward the mountain passes of the Rockies and the deserts of Arizona or Nevada? Maybe, but the heat would probably be high in the desert and my comfort level off road with narrow mountain passes on a new bike might be an issue. North was the only option that made much sense so off to Canada and the Great Lakes it was. I decided I would ride around the perimeter of all the great lakes. I did make the executive decision to ignore lake Michigan and Michigan all together. Too many trips to Detroit, Grand Rapids, Benton Harbor, and Chicago for work made spending much effort on seeing Lake Michigan seem pointless. I needed to dip a toe in Superior, Huron, Ontario, and Erie. So June 1 I set off and headed for the west side of Lake Superior. About 10 days later I returned home with an additional 3200 miles in the bike and a bunch of memories to go with the pictures. My route was Nolensville, TN > Rockford, IL > Stone Lake, WI > Thunder Bay Ontario CA > Wawa Ontario CA > Manitoulin Island Ontario CA > Wiarton Ontario CA > Kingston Ontario CA > Niagara Falls Ontario CA > Erie, PA > Cleveland PA > Columbus PA > Nolensville, TN (home). Through it all I managed to get in about 250 to 300 miles of gravel and forest service roads in Northern Wisconsin and Canada. I camped a few night, stayed in a cabin and a bunkee a couple nights, and hit a few hotels on the way up and back. Also had to hit a hotel in Niagara Falls as there were not many camping options close by. Also snuck in a ferry crossing although it was not as enjoyable as I would have hoped due to rain and upper 40º F temperatures. My steed for the ride and my new commuter is my '05 BMW R1200GS that my wife has nicknamed Tucan. In addition to the 3200 miles on the trip I have put a about 1800 miles on locally bringing my total for the summer to 5000ish miles.10 points

This thread has gotten kinda quiet. I was out today and made the mistake of stopping in to a small store in Brentwood. I had been wanting to try Uncle Nearest and they had 2 of the bottles in stock. I was talking to the gentleman there running the store about what high proofs he had available to taste test. Old Soul was 109 proof and very good. It had that nice burn you feel up into your nose. Then I made the mistake of trying the 16yo Calumet. It is 106 proof but is so smooth you do not get any of the burn. It was phenomenal and priced accordingly.3 points

As much as Biden is mostly checked out, he occasionally comes out of the dementia fog and exerts his will. When we got out of Afghanistan was one of those times. His steadfast opposition and hard line against direct action in Ukraine is another. He’s the reason why we didn’t enact a no-fly zone and the reason why things haven’t escalated beyond where they are currently. Harris doesn’t have the political instincts, will, principles, or even the basic intelligence to handle the role. As bad as things may be right now, Harris would be infinitely worse. Y'all all need to be praying for the President’s health.3 points

Have a somewhat rare Arsenal Slr105a1r rifle dressed in plum furniture. Has a Krebs trigger job and Krebs rear sight. I do have original rear sight leaf to go with rifle. These were imported 1 year only and are the first factory built Bulgarian 74's to enter the country. Looking to sell or trade. $2650 ftf or $2700 shipped. Will look at other rare/preban AK's for trade.3 points

Don't be jealous, join in. I did this (and many of my trips) solo but am always looking for riding partners to take part in my craziness. Next year is Trans Labrador, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. 2024 is Tuktoyaktuk, Dust to Dawson, Top of the World Hwy, and Deadhorse, AK. I may actually leave my bike stored in the PNW for a year and fly back out in 2025 for Vancouver Island, BC, and the Pacific Northwest. Get yourself one. They are soooooo comfortable. If you have the inseam to handle it or get a lowered version they make trips much more enjoyable. I actually bought this one because I had lost some of my interest in touring due to the comfort level of my other street bike. I have a sport touring bike, Honda VFR800, and I loved it for 200± miles but doing multiple 300 mile days was just not enjoyable anymore. I am actually going to take all the luggage and touring accessories off of the VFR and just return it to fun weekend corner carving duties. This bike makes even 500+ mile days easy. I would often find myself with the fuel light on (220 to 240 miles) before I was ready to stop. I could outride the tank if you will. Previous bikes I was looking for a stop and stretch break at 100~150 miles. It has renewed my passion for motorcycle touring. I had not even cleaned up my unpacked gear before I had the mapping software open planning my next multi day ride.2 points

Sadly they finally took out the old swing set and tall metal slides from the elementary school near my house. Remember burning the out of yourself on those metal slides in the summer.2 points

New to Greene, waiting to close on our house south of town. Hoping to find some decent shops nearby at some point in case I need an FFL... Saw there was a new one in Parrotsville so might stop by on the way to my in-laws. Plus there's a few pawn shops in town might stop by as well. Me too. Might take the Henry to the Greene county range or one of the NF ranges this week or next.1 point

I don't know the exact legal ramifications for carrying past a sign, but I usually either choose not to go or carry anyway. I know I've talked to a local DA and Sheriff and they aren't really looking to prosecute somebody with this. "Off the record" I was told that unless the establishment really pushes it, it will likely be dropped on a local level. This just goes for carrying past a sign, you reach another level when you carry in another prohibited place like a school or court house.1 point

Zucchini: Slice 1 zucchini thin, lengthwise. Mix 2 tsps Italian seasoning, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper and 2Tbsps olive oil. Toss zucchini in mixture, place in single layer on baking sheet, and bake in oven at 425 for 7-8 min. Flip and bake another 7-8 min. I’m not a zucchini fan, but this is easy and pretty darned good.1 point

I replaced the original stereo with a modern one I bought from Crutchfield. It came with a little microphone I mounted on my A Pillar for phone calls. After that you just pair your phone with your stereo just like any other Bluetooth device. I added a backup camera that works with the new stereo too. It's was all fairly straightforward. There are lots of videos online to help if you get stuck.1 point

Yes and no. From my limited research on the topic you have to get paperwork approved first but you can in some cases bring a firearm in with you. A traditional hunting rifle is fairly easy. Bolt action, lever action, single shot and Shotguns are not a major issue. You can pretty much forget about any type of semi auto long gun, especially anything that resembles an AR platform weapon. Handguns are extremely limited. Anything with a barrel length less than 4" is strictly forbidden which knocks out a bulk of what we in the US consider a carry gun. You could take in say a 6" barreled revolver fairly easily as long as you file the paperwork for approval first. Also take note that Canada has an issue with many knives as well. I did not take my normal EDC folding knife. Fixed blades are ok but anything that is spring assisted, has a pin/post/thumb knob to assist in opening, or can be opened one handed via gravity or flipping/inertia is forbidden. I took in two fixed blade "camp" knives with my gear. Valid since I was in fact camping and had camp cook gear with me. They are used to and good with hunting so firearms and knives that would traditionally used by hunters are not a problem. Stray much beyond that and you will not have a good day at the border.1 point

I’m sure it’s better to have an abundance of caution around the fringe possibilities in the hope of preventing them from being reality. Or at least a livable reality. Seeing what can be done via remote access, one would be naive to not have some level of concern. Irrespective if its made easier by legislation to standardize system protocols. If this does start to look problematic, I would expect we’ll start seeing a good number of used auto cell / sat / wireless receivers on eBay.1 point

Same here. Those old swing sets were stupid tall with seats like two feet off the ground. Could really catch some air when you got going and jumped out.1 point

I do not and never have carried open. I do not want anyone to know that I have a gun on me. Ever. Period. Your feelings may vary. I carry multiple ways. First and foremost I almost always have my Micro Eagle in my front left pocket. If it is cold or I am riding my motorcycle, as I wear a leather vest, I will wear a shoulder holster with a Glock 19 under my left arm with two additional magazines under my right arm. If it warm out and I am just wearing jeans and a shirt, I carry a Glock 19 in the waistband appendix carry with an extra magazine. It took some time to adjust to the fact that I have a gun pointed right at my junk, but honestly I am bummed that I didn't convert to this sooner. It is comfortable, easy to conceal and is rapidly accessible. I use a kydex Desantis Pegasus Pipe Hitter, I had to go look it up real quick so I could edit to add.1 point

Back into this thread https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/florida-family-electric-car-problem-replacement-battery-costs-more-vehicle The Florida family found out a replacement for the electric car's battery would cost thousands Avery Siwinski is a 17-year-old who's parents spent $11,000 on a used Ford Focus Electric car, which is a 2014 model and had about 60,000 miles when it was bought, according to KVUE. The teenager had the car for six months before it began giving her issues and the dashboard was flashing symbols. "It was fine at first," Siwinski said. "I loved it so much. It was small and quiet and cute. And all the sudden it stopped working." The Ford dealership had advised us that we could replace the battery," said her grandfather, Ray Siwinski. "It would only cost $14,000." However, the family found out that there weren't any batteries of that type available anymore because the Ford model is discontinued. So an eight year old car needs a new battery and the battery is no longer made, that make me want a plug in car even more.1 point

Also, please note, since this involves Tennessee I'm vaguely open to allowing discussion (another mod may disagree entirely and axe the thread) but keep it civil. This is the only warning.1 point

Hello Everyone, Just moved to Johnson City. If anyone in the area enjoys targeting shooting outdoors, I am looking to do that.1 point

I guess I'm the only person who still likes it and and is willing to throw out 308win. The furthest I have ever shot is 650m but the 308 did that just fine. It is my deer rifle (18" AR308) of choice and I got four deer this past season all in the 160-200m range and 3 didn't move 10' from where I shot them. The 4th was just a bad shot on my end. I tripped on a root and dropped my rifle, startled a young antler-less buck, I picked up the rifle and waited for him to pause, he did and in my haste to make up for dropping the rifle and nearly busting my..... cheeks.... I forgot basic marksman ship and didn't utilize a hold over so instead of a good hit I gut shot the poor guy. He took off. but all the others plopped right down.1 point

The 7mm Mag. is a fine caliber but bullet weight is limited. For me the 300 Win. Mag. was a better choice for reloading. More variations of bullet weight can be used in this caliber.1 point
