This from a seller of 80% lowers, and yes, it can be found on the internet: https://www.ar-15lowerreceivers.com/80-lower-news/can-i-build-an-80-lower-receiver-without-an-ffl/ You may have great arguments why the ATF is wrong, but I sure wouldn't want to test them. Can someone else finish my 80 lower receiver? Unsurprisingly, the answer to that is no. The ATF explains their ruling in so many words: 1. The Gun Control Act of 1968 defines an FFL as "any person engaged in the business of manufacturing firearms or ammunition for purposes of sale or distribution." As defined by section 921(a)(21)(A) of the Gun Control Act, "engaged in the business" means "a person who devotes time, attention, and labor to manufacturing firearms as a regular course of trade for business with the principle objective of livelihood and profit through the sale of distribution of the firearms manufactured." 2. When an unlicensed machine shop, gunsmith, or FFL receives an incomplete firearm receiver (an 80 lower, for example), performs manufacturing activity that results in "the making of a different frame or receiver and also a weapon which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile", and returns it back to the customer or builder (you), he or she has engaged in the "distribution" of a firearm. 3. According to the Gun Control Act, "any person (including any corporation or other legal entity) engaged in the business of performing machining, molding, casting, forging, printing (additive manufacturing) or other manufacturing process to create a firearm frame or receiver, or to make a frame or receiver suitable for use as part of a weapon ... which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive, i.e., a firearm, must be licensed as a manufacturer under the GCA; identify (mark) any such firearm; and maintain required manufacturer's records."5 points

Military term. You pop a smoke grenade to let your helicopter pick up locate your position and get you out. Yeah, the way he used it sounded kinda dumb to me too.4 points

That is where you and I differ, first we shouldn't have to SBR anything, as it is no more lethal than a rifle, maybe even less so. But I would say that someone who puts a brace on a pistol has done just about as much work as someone who goes the SBR route. They both understand the law, both want to stay legal, and both have, probably, passed a few background checks. It's just that the brace guy didn't feel like the government is due $200 and all those weeks or months of waiting to legally own a weapon which the constitution clearly says he should be able to own.4 points

That is going to put us into territory we're not allowed to discuss but this is very debatable. I used to believe it.4 points

Even if it is/was perfectly legal, anyone with any assets would be an idiot to do this in this day and age. Why risk losing everything for someone that you don't know or quite honestly as mentioned can buy a jig and do it themselves. If you are afraid of screwing it up, just buy a lower and be done with it.3 points
-
It's not "paranoia," it's a stated fact that it is illegal according to ATF. Don't pose a question without doing your own research and then talk poorly of those giving you assistance. That's poor character. The "grey area" you're looking for is YOU using YOUR friends jig to complete it. Not having him to do it for you.3 points

I assume you are aware shooting people indiscriminately is already against the law. The folks who obey this law are not the problem, yet they are the only ones who would be punished by any new firearm restricting laws. Folks who don’t obey this law are the problem, and you surely don’t believe they’d suddenly choose to follow some new law.3 points

Before The Lulz went off the deep end, he made a valid point about denying the ability to use effective tools for self defense is to essentially remove the right of self defense. A great and recent example of this comes from our neighbors up north https://www.dailywire.com/news/guns-must-not-be-used-for-self-defense-canadas-trudeau-insists3 points

How'd this turn into a bash Daniel thread? If you don't like what a member says it's pretty easy to "Ignore" them. When the politics sub-forum was in existence I blocked several of our more impolite members, (both liberal and conservative), placing them on the "Ignore" list until after the election was over. I've written this before but I will remind everyone: We use only 7% of our communication skills when we write. That makes it very easy to misinterpret what someone writes. If you are personally offended by what someone writes then you should either direct message them, and give them a chance to clarify their meaning, or just put them on your "Ignore" list. It makes this forum much more enjoyable.3 points

JustEd is correct. Every gun has its own unique personality. What works perfectly in one gun, may not work at all in another of the same make and model. All you can really do is experiment with different ammo. First requirement is reliability. Second is accuracy. Most any quality self defense round will get the job done. With the current ammo situation, I'd suggest you buy a box or two and give them a try. If one is reliable, use that. At some later time when prices and availability are better, you can fine tune then. BTW: hardball has worked successfully for over 100 years now. Don't sell it short.2 points

When you get to be my age, you will realize that $100 makes no difference in your standard of living and it is worth it to live stress free. Besides, with no stress, I could still live long enough to come out ahead. I still wish I could buy my lifetime drivers license for $200.2 points

Nice condition model 642. Carried and shot very little. It includes 3 sets of factory grips, pink and black rubber boot grips and a set of black rubber combat grips. Also includes an Amish made leather owb holster, 100 rounds of tula and approximately 80 rounds of Remington 125 grain SJHP .38 +p self defense loads. Looking to trade for a full size semi auto such as a Glock 17, 20 or 21. Most looking for a 9mm or .45 acp. Will consider a 10mm, but no .40s please. Will also consider other quality brands of semi autos. Meet local to Oak Ridge/West Knoxville.1 point

OK so Bolsonaro is scum. But so are most world leaders. Nothing new there. It doesn't alter the fact that easing private ownership of guns resulted in a large drop in murder rates.1 point

On the NBC evening news, they brought up the fact that before the shooter could even buy a gun, he had to apply for and receive an Illinois FOID (Firearms Owner ID) card which required a background check. Further, He applied at age 18 and his father had to sign the form confirming his approval. If he's 21 now, that means that his FOID was approved in 2019, the same year of his previous Police encounters. Yet, he received his FOID and it was never revoked.1 point

You are correct, sir! Politicians of all persuasions have no interest whatsoever in solving anything. They only wish to gain money, power, and create an imaginary dragon they intend to slay if you’ll just send campaign money and re-elect them. If something In their interest happens to align with your interest, you can, for the most part, chalk it up to a happy coincidence.1 point

Actually, you haven’t schooled anyone. You basically strolled in and did the pigeon on the chessboard strut. You’re new here so this is your one free warning. We expect better of folks than this. You wanna debate your point, do it with reason and facts. Strawmanning, ad hominem and name calling aren’t helpful on any level.1 point

Don’t think anyone can answer that. Your gun may run differently for some reason. in general, rounds which have a wide mouth “tend” to be harder to feed. Some of my guns run Speer Gold dot, some occasionally balk. Because of the barrel/feed ramp on 1911’s they “Can” be finicky Hornady seems to have a good bullet profile on their polymer tipped ammo. Old time Federal HST and HTP are quite reliable in any 45 I have had. Love Sig v crown in 9mm. Don’t have any in 45. Go with reliability first. Especially if you can’t afford to shoot a lot of them. Personally, I would not carry a round nose bullet for a concealed carry firearm.1 point

I am interested on why an arm brace would have been a factor on your thinking, it makes no tactical or technical difference between a pistol with a brace and an SBR which have been available for decades. Not to belabor the point, but and individual hell bent on killing someone, or many someones, would not care of the legality of one vs another, and would, if they knew anything about ARs, opt for just using an illegal SBR vs a brace. To kind of keep on subject; anyone know what type of rifle he used? I read that it was purchased/acquired legally, but they have an "assault" weapons ban in place. I also seen where someone called it AR like, so what could be a legal Ar style rifle that would be legal there?1 point

Cleaning out the safe of guns I do not shoot. I am the second owner of this firearm. I have not shot it. It does not appear to have been used much if at all. Comes with everything you see in the pics. 28" barrels and a total of 5 chokes. It is missing the choke wrench but you do not need one with these chokes. $11501 point

I posted this back in November of 2021 but the day after I posted it a family member died and with everything that was going on I kind of just forgot about it. This is a M1 garand in really good condition my grandfather purchased after he got back from the Korean war. The rifle is in great condition for its age. Price is $1200 firm. These are getting harder to find especially in this condition.1 point

I can’t say for certain that what you’re asking for is illegal, but it’s definitely very close to that line. You need to acquire a jig and perform the work yourself.1 point

I just did a quick google search for how many people in the USA died in mass shootings. It appears that out of 350,000,000 people 1,051 have died in mass shooting incidents from 1982 to July 4, 2022. While any death is one too many, I would probably consider 1,051 out of 350,000,000 over a period of 40 years in order to preserve our liberty a reasonable trade off. We have fought a lot of wars for a lot less and lost many more lives. The danger from mass shootings is way overblown.1 point

I'd rather take a serious ass whuppin' than move. I moved for the last time 30 years ago. I plan to die right here where I am.1 point

For the record, I don't like Daniel either and frankly wish he'd just move on. However, AFAIK he hasn't committed a ban worthy offence. He just pisses people off. OTOH, preaching to the choir gets old and boring. Its good to have an opposing viewpoint now and then. What does bother me is that when a thread goes completely off topic because people can't seem to get along with each other, Surly all of you have had to deal with someone you just infuriates the Hell outta ya, but there's nothing you can do about it. Think of Daniel like that and move on. Now can we please get back to the subject at hand?1 point

No, no public voting of that. Not how we do things around here. We have been an echo chamber for long stretches of time. It’s why I am so happy when diverse worldviews arrive and help us not to be that.1 point
-
To make it clear, we aren't voting on whether to exile Daniel from the island. I do think his posts could be more thoughtful and less inflammatory, but I agree with @Chucktshoes regarding thought diversity and opposing viewpoints. I don't want to see TGO become an echo chamber, and if we run off anyone with an opposing viewpoint that's exactly what we will become.1 point

Seems that most places in Memphis will run you $50 with tics. I’m currently using Arms Fair on Trinity Rd. They now have a dedicated transfer portal next door. I stopped going to Guns and Ammo years ago. The neighborhood is too bad.1 point

I’d be willing to bet my last dollar, in this day and time, you will not find anyone to do this for you. As it would be considered building a firearm that does not have a serial number it does not belong to the builder.1 point

I would love to hear if they still have them. Signal Mountain PD had XD45 for about eight years before going to Glock in 2019. Springfield 1911s are very popular duty weapons, but I will admit it’s an entirely different scenario.1 point

One more question for the the guys with RIA SF. Is there a good Self defense round for these that seems to feed reliable in them? Just trying not to spend $100 on testing hollow points. My lgs had some sig V crown but I haven’t bought any yet they also had some Remington black belt I may have some old hydra shock somewhere around the house as well.1 point

It doesn’t me. Firearms should be a non-partisan issue. What I dislike is seeing folks who used to believe in the 2A advocating for greater firearms restrictions. “Good for me, but not for thee” types really get under skin.1 point

I came across this as a result of the post that another of our members recently made regarding the rescuing of that STG44…it came from same site. This is absolutely wonderful, except for that very last sentence. I realize that I’m preaching to the choir here, but a little edification never hurt a congregation, does it? Here’s the link to the original…. A firebrand Southern lawmaker spoke out against further restrictions on the Second Amendment during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing this week. Congressman Clay Higgins, the straight-talking Louisiana lawman who earned a reputation as the "Cajun John Wayne" before running as a Republican for Congress, confronted Joseph Gramaglia, the Police Commissioner for Buffalo, New York, over the Commish’s support for controversial "red flag" gun seizure laws. "So, you support confiscating guns from individuals 'determined to be a threat to themselves or others – determined to be,'" asked Higgins. "By this legislation, my colleagues are putting forth, my understanding of the letter of that law, which I 1,000 percent oppose as would our Founding Fathers, the letter of that law says an anonymous tip from a citizen. So, if this was law, Commissioner, would you confiscate? Would you go to your neighbor’s home and confiscate his legally owned weapons? A man that was not under criminal investigation nor under arrest. Would you do it? Gramaglia: The red flag laws would... Higgins: That’s a yes or no, brother. I got five minutes to make an hour and a half statement here. Gramaglia: It’s more than a yes or no answer. It would be up to – it would... Higgins: We’ll move on. If you cannot say yes, you would confiscate weapons from an American citizen that was subject to this law that my colleagues intend to push through this Congress, and you said in your statement that you would confiscate those weapons if an American was determined to be – your quote – a threat to themselves or others. According to the letter of the law, determined to be is defined by an anonymous tip that an American citizen is a threat to themselves or others. You’re a police commissioner, a "thin blue line" brother sworn to uphold the Constitution, and you’re saying you’d seize those weapons. I see that as a problem. Then Higgins sat back and delivered a monologue on life, liberty, and gun laws, which is just a home run. Higgins this week voted against both H.R. 7910 and H.R. 2377, Democrat anti-gun laws which passed the House on roughly party-line votes.1 point
