  1. FOLKS... BE WARNED AND BE AWARE! The conversations shown above are actual messages that some of our members have received via Private Messaging from people who are attempting to scam them. These are just a few examples. The routine is almost always the same. Someone with a new account and low-to-no post count will message you privately about something you posted in our Trading Post forms, and either tell you that they know someone who has the item you want to buy, or that they know someone who wants to buy the item you are selling. REPORT ANY SUCH MESSAGES TO THE MODERATORS, IMMEDIATELY! Again, these are just examples and not every person who contacts you about your ad postings is going to be a scammer, but you should always trust your gut instincts. If something seems fishy, there is no harm in reporting it to the Staff before you take any further action. We are always glad to investigate for you! Be safe out there!

  2. Update for February 7, 2022... I am making some headway on this. There are several features within our forum software that can be combined in just the right way to make it so that new members can receive and respond to private messages, but not start new private messages of their own. This would cut down on the number of scammers who sign up and then try to message people who've posted "Wanted To Buy" type advertisements, seeking to scam with them with the usual sales pitches. Stay tuned.

  4. I’ve been making 1911 grips for a few years now after I got tired of not getting what I truly wanted from other sites. I recently started playing with fractal burning for cutting boards and what not, so I decided to try it on some grips. I pulled out a set of oak stave and walnut to see how the 10k volts react to the different woods. What are your thoughts? Should I do a resin fill to give them some color? I’ve been a fan of walnut and blue but it may be a bit flashy for my carry pistols.

  5. This is a review originally posted on Glocktalk by one of the students in the Feb 4-5 Saving Your Life with a Pistol---What matters, what doesn't. Hi to all my GT buds: This is a comprehensive review of a recent training class I attended---so, if you don't have 5 minutes to spare please feel free to surf another post instead. This past weekend, I was fortunate to be able to attend a 2 day class in Tennessee, entitled; Saving Your Life with a Pistol---What matters, what doesn't. Instructed by Randy Harris, of Harris Combative Strategies and John Hearne, of Two Pillars Training. The class consisted of 9 participants, of which I was the eldest actual class member ( the range owner beat me by 5 years, but he was attending in conjunction with his ownership of the range) The class included ex-military, active and retired LE and also included several current and former firearms instructors. The skill-level was intermediate-to-advanced. Before I dive in, I want to preface the review with a little background: As many of you are probably aware, I am retired LE, with years as a member of my agency's firearm training section. In addition, after retirement to NM, I operated a very successful CHL training school from 2005 to 2015, This was during the surge in shall-issue permits in NM where a minimum of 15 hrs of combined classroom and range training is required and where the license is caliber and platform type specific---revolver shooters can't carry self-loaders and vice versa unless qualified with both. Since leaving NM and settling in GA, I try to maintain my age-diminishing skill-set by attending training classes--[ like the one being reviewed ] as often as they are offered within a few hours drive of my location. Mr Harris and Mr Hearne, are both highly skilled shooters and experienced instructors, each having trained with and by the great instructors of the present and past generation, to include the “Colonel” among many others. Their instructing “style” is not to denigrate or belittle performance, as some top-tier instructors often do, but to actually help the student self-diagnose problems, offering practical solutions for correction. In addition to their extensive skill-sets, each is a professional. I must define what this term means to me; Professionalism in my experience, is demonstrated by showing up and working when you are suffering from an Upper Respiratory Infection, like Mr Harris was---it is dressing out for extended range sessions in 19 to 30 degree weather, like it was the entire weekend, and finally, professionalism is demonstrated by not skimping on the training because of these limiting factors. Now, as to the course content: I have been blessed throughout my 50 yr shooting career; having been taught and mentored by extremely patient and knowledgeable instructors; ranging from my early agency peers to the great instructors during my IALEFI years, and finally with advanced classes taught by messirs Harris and Hearne. Eight hours of this class was devoted to the classroom for the sole purpose of understanding; Who Wins, Who Loses, and Why Instructors such as myself, have long repeated the sage advice of the “Colonel”, the witticisms of Clint Smith, Tom Givens, Massad Ayoob, and other highly skilled instructors, while never knowing the origins and actual science behind the core tenets of the handgun instruction we received.. This class, taught by a Masters educated historian and trainer explained how we are wired as humans, why we react the way we do in extremis, as well as presenting practical methods for learning essential gun-fight survival skills. The content was personally satisfying to me, as it affirmed the beliefs and dictums I have passed on to my CHL students, while divulging the “Science” behind those beliefs to back them up. This portion of the class was very extensive---debunking statements and beliefs widely held by myself and other trainers...such as; the belief that the victims of the Newhall massacre had empty 38 casings in their trouser pockets...just one of many examples where actual research and science has revealed the “True” story of events many believed otherwise. The range portion of the class was predictable; There is only so much you can do on a traditional square range....and, the field of handgun training has expanded about as much as the science allows---The core disciplines have been developed and are widely taught---this is a finite discipline---there really are not any new dynamic discoveries being made....[We] know what works---we know what core skills a handgun shooter must develop in order to manipulate the platform correctly and efficiently...we know the value of dry-fire practice, confirmed by purposeful live-fire. We know that being able to draw to a center-mass hit from concealment in less than 2 seconds, is vital to prevailing in an armed encounter...We know the value of force-on-force training. These facts are universally known, or “should” be known by any serious student of the discipline, and certainly by Any person.who carries a handgun daily for personal protection. So, there were few surprises for us on the range. That being said, I believe Any professionally directed handgun practice is valid for anchoring a skill-set or reinforcing existing skills. And something we ALL learned, is just how uncomfortable and difficult it is to smoothly manipulate your handgun in 19 degree temperatures---how 3 layers of clothing can snag and or slow your draw.---how frozen fingers can easily fumble a reload...how difficult it can be to manipulate your platform while also holding a flashlight...but, Bad Actors operate in all kinds of weather, and to survive,we must be able also. Several hours of the program were conducted in near-total darkness...while we practiced the various methods for operating our handguns with both weapon mounted and mostly hand-held flashlights. Spoiler alert...firing with a flashlight in your hand is one thing...performing a tactical magazine exchange, with frozen fingers AND a flashlight in your hand is a different matter entirely. Fortunately, the stats are on our side, in that very rarely will an armed citizen need to reload their platform...the reality being that you will live or die with what is in the handgun at the time hostilities commence, whether it be 5 rounds in your trusty J-frame or 17 rounds in your wonder-nine. In conclusion; I thoroughly enjoyed the class, and there was very little down-time---we were either actively engaged in vigorous classroom discussions/debates or on the firing line...and in the final analysis...that's exactly what we paid our monies to do... I hope to meet some of my GT buds at another class, contact the instructors at their web sites; Harriscombative.com or Jhearne.com and remember “Firearm safety is Everyone's responsibility” LT. Donn

  18. I have been lucky I guess. Everywhere I have lived has had underground utilities. Back when I was in Millington in the 1994 ice storm we lost power for a few hours due to the transmission line to the three neighborhoods on my side of town got taken out before it went underground. They fixed that junction in a matter of hours and we were back up and running. My last two homes in the greater Nashville area have also had completely underground utilities. I don't think I have been without power longer than a couple hours total in two decades. Hope everyone is staying warm and safe.

  20. I have not had a chance to get any range time yet but I recently picked up a S&W Performance Center Shield Plus with the top ported barrel and slide. I wonder how it will compare. The only other pistol I have with any sort of comp or porting is a G17 with a Mass Driver comp so not exactly apples to apples. I actually had a bit of buyers remorse the morning after getting it but I am hoping that will pass once I get some time with it. I think once I find a good holster solution and comfortable carry configuration I will feel better about it.

  24. I have a neighbor who does fractal burning. I remember when he started. He took apart a microwave I think it was to get the parts to do it. I remember thinking this fool is gonna electrocute himself. He hasn't yet. I think he bought an actual machine to do it with now. Pretty neat stuff. I think your grips look better without the colored resin added.

  32. My gas logs burn a ton of gas and runs up the utility bill. That's why I rarely use it. But its a good flame and kept the den/kitchen area nice and warm. It kept the rest of the house tolerable. I actually had to turn it down after a couple of hours. Only ran it at about half.

  33. I'm finally back. Here in Bartlett my power went out at about 9:30am thurs morning. It came back about 1:30, But went out again at 4:00pm. I have lanterns and fired up the gas fireplace. Funny thing is that I've lived in this house 32 years and I doubt those gas logs have been turned on a half dozen times. But I sure was glad to have them. I stayed warm and toasty. All in all I did quite well considering. Power came back on around 9:00pm Thurs and all is good. The streets never did ice up. I drove around the area some and lots of limbs and full trees are down. It was a mess! On Friday I heard on the news that 350 trees were reported down. That's just what was reported. No telling how many people have limbs or parts of trees down. Some streets were completely blocked. I lost a couple of large limbs, but no damage. I've mentioned my disabled friend before. She lives in the Frayser section of Memphis. Her power is still out now. I went and got her and her dogs Fri morning. They've been staying in my guest room ever since. Supposedly her power should be back by midnight tonight. But no promises. They're saying some folks may be out until the end of the week. For me the biggest PITA has been my cable was out. No TV and no internet for 5 days. It just came back on a little while ago.

  37. Not locked? Few people are stupid enough to steal a police car. Would you really want a cop fumbling with keys if they had to be somewhere in a hurry? Not a threat? More people are killed by cars than guns. He already initiated a wrestling match with a cop. He's in a police car that probably has a rifle and/or shotgun inside. He could easily impersonate an officer for nefarious purposes if he got away.

  38. Also interests myself-would really like to hear from someone with a personal use-not an advertisement that boasts about performance- I have a Sig P365X and P365XL so the Spectre is on a list of sorts-and we all know what that means-

  39. Yes, they work - but let's calibrate our definitions, first. What they minimize is muzzle rise. A compensator reduces muzzle rise by jetting gasses upward, countering muzzle rise to some degree. In order to counter recoil, which is to say the rearward push of the firearm, a brake minimizes recoil by jetting combustion gasses to the rear and sides. A good example of a brake in action is the enormous chevron brake on the Barrett M82-A1 rifle. Back to this topic, it's common for a well-tuned comp to offset about 10-15% of a handgun's muzzle rise. It depends on several factors including the powder charge of the round being fired. This is my Glock G45 (9mm) running a Parker Mountain Machine comp. The comp definitely works and the gun tracks fairly flat, especially when shooting hotter rounds. I saw that new Sig P365XL Spectre Comp for the first time just earlier today and it absolutely piqued my interest.
