  1. December 22, 2021 -- Well, another year is rapidly drawing to a close and another is now visible on the horizon. It seems hard to believe that we are here once again, and yet I am sure I say that every year. As I sit here writing this, my house is full of the sound of family enjoying the week of Christmas. My three youngest children are sitting at the kitchen table, decorating cookies with their mom and aunt. Christmas movies are playing on the television across the room just beyond the Christmas tree, but no one is really watching them. They are playing mostly to add their music and sounds to the atmosphere, and in case someone happens to look up so that more scenes of Christmas will fill their view. It is not lost on me that I am beyond fortunate to have this scene playing out in my house tonight. My two oldest kids, separated from this bunch by a legitimate 18-years, are grown and long since moved out. By any account, I should be in the empty nest phase of life, but God saw fit to keep me in the game a bit longer. I am forever in His debt for it. Some of you can undoubtedly relate to the notion of a quieter and calmer home this Christmas. Some of you will be lucky to see brief glimpses of your homes this Christmas in between hours spent away at work. Some of you will be reading this from some location elsewhere on this planet, quite possibly in a place that our government has put you to do a job that you can't even talk about. Wherever Christmas and the New Year find you, I hope that you will find some comfort in this statement: You may be solitary, but you are not alone. We, here at TGO, are with you. And you may be busy serving in some other capacity, but you aren't forgotten. I am thinking of you and I know that others on TGO will be joining me in that. I hope that each of you enjoy Christmas in the best way possible. I hope that you find peace, relaxation, restoration and hope in it. And if you can't... drop me a line and let me know. I am glad to lend a virtual ear to you and it would be my honor to tell you that you really aren't alone. Merry Christmas, folks. Thanks for making TGO the best place on the Internet to talk about everything under the sun. And sometimes about guns. --David

  3. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Unless it is a structured setting like a professional match or even a martial arts class setting, there are zero winners when grown men fight. It’s always a losing proposition for everyone.

  5. I have ridden bicycles regularly since 1976. I still have to not overeat to keep weight off though. During the pandemic when everything was shutdown I rode more and ate out less. Went for my annual checkup and the Dr. noticed I had lost 14 pounds since the year before. I told him it was due to Covid. He said "I didn't know you have Covid". I told him I didn't but since I couldn't go anywhere (especially restaurants) I rode more miles than ever so the weigh came off. I rode 7,400 miles in 2020. My usual goal for a year is 6,000 miles.

  6. Before I was married, I started flirting with a young lady that had a boyfriend. I didn't know she had a boyfriend because she didn't tell me. She did tell her boyfriend. He walked up to me an asked me if I was flirting with his girlfriend in a very casual way. I told him I didn't realize she was dating someone, I apologized, and told him it wouldn't happen again. We shook hands and went or separated ways because we are adults.

  8. This is probably heresy and I'm proposing this as an owner of several Smiths and a couple of Rugers. I picked up a Taurus Tracker 4-inch ported barrel seven round double action revolver. I have to say it really surprised me in the quality , fit and finish, and frankly it is accurate as hell. I take it with me when I go hog hunting and load it with heavy 357 200 grain hard cast from. Buffalo Bore. I use my Winchester 94 in 30-30 and I am well served with both. Just a thought. Lots of them in local shops here in East Tennessee. I picked up mine at Mike's Gun Shop in Morristown. Nice people good prices. Good luck. Ed

  9. From what I've observed and my personal experience, weight loss is about 90% what/how much you eat. Exercise is good, but the table is where you drop pounds. Diabetes, etc may complicate this formula, I don't know (and don't want to learn). I've consistently run about 15 miles/week this year, but started eating stupid again a couple months ago (stupid = sub sandwiches, chips, cookies, Dr. Pepper, lots of bread). Work made do it and all that. Sure enough, I'm 10 pounds heavier. While eating stupid, I ran 15-20 miles per week (and didn't go slower), but the scales didn't care. I've been through this cycle several times and it just confirms that, for me at least, food is everything.

  10. I have lost enough weight that I can now wear an IWB holster in front of my strong side hip, comfortably at the 1:00 to 2:00 "o clock" position, and draw it easily. Lost a lot of my spare tire. And guys that is a good thing for me. Am planning to wear it to church WED night to see how sitting for a period of time feels, then if that works out will need to practice the draw stork now to ingrain the feel in my memory with my new presentation. Previously been wearing my SW 9 MM EZ at the 4:00 just behind the strong side hip. Snub in my strong side pocket, however, will move it to my weak side pocket. I have gone from 295 to 221 in the past year and half. My last A1C was 6.0. Who Hoo! Dropped 4 paint sizes. Hope I can hold it off. Lost my appetite. Let you know how things work out.

  13. Being offered for sale is an Anschutz 1710 HB .22lr. Pictures are shown with a Weaver classic 6-24 scope which has a fine reticle with a very small dot. The rifle is being sold without the scope and rings but may be included for an extra fee. The rifle is in good shape but there are some small marks in the stock finish. If you have been wanting one but want to save a grand, this may be the rifle for you. I am selling the rifle, one magazine, and the picatinny rail. Buyer must be TN resident able to purchase a firearm. Bill of sale and TN DL# required. Cash only. Thanks!

  18. Same situation with my dad. He's only 65 but he's really stopped being active the past 5 years and it's showing. I had him over doing light duty with a chainsaw and he was worn out and winded after a few minutes. I beg him to come to the gym with me but he won't do it.

  20. Even if weight loss comes mostly from diet we should all still stay as active as possible. We lose 10% of our muscle mass each year after age 40. Occasionally I'll see a person in their late 70's and 80's that has taken care of themselves and seem happy. That's good motivation for me.

  21. Gradually over 5 years went from 356 to 270 lbs. Was aided by three surgeries (two total knee replacements and a triple by-pass). Lost my last 25 lbs during the pandemic while having a diabetic ulcer on my foot that limited my walking. I can tell that my stomach capacity has greatly been reduced and am satisfied eating for taste and not bulk. In other words I eat one sugar free cookie instead of a bag of cookies (or my weakness potato chips). Would like to get down to 250 lbs.

  26. I lived in Central Oklahoma for 13 years, very near to Moore OK (Google "Moore F5 tornado"). I've seen many lives saved due to storm shelters, and many lost due to the absence of one. I was also a trained storm-spotter for a Central Oklahoma police department, so tornadoes were part of our lives for quite a while (but then in 10 years in Mt. Juliet, we've had VERY NEAR misses 3 times, including just a week ago - 0.2 of a mile !!! What the h*ll ???). If you get a commercial one, just make sure it's passed the Texas Tech wind test, whether you're looking at underground or aboveground. My only reservation about aboveground (assuming the shelter itself is properly built) is the sufficiency of the anchoring system. Proper strength, number and length of anchor bolts (into concrete !!) is the question. Do your research. And don't let some salesman tell you "we're approved". GET PROOF !! I've already talked to two outfits around Nashville since last week that flat-a** lied to my face about testing, once I checked their claims. If their own product has not been tested, or they won't give you the results, I won't go near it. Anybody that wants you to "take their word for it" --- you're out the door, guys.

  27. Learned a long time ago not to give two s _ _ _ s about what others thought about brands, etc, but rather to focus on results. About 10 years ago I bought a Taurus 1911 (I own several model 1911's) as the price was very good. Right out of the box, it was crazy accurate and continues to this day to be the most accurate and reliable 1911 that I own. I do understand that everything that they make is not top shelf, but they do produce some good pistols and revolvers if you know where to look.

  28. I don't see the issue really. I just saw on the news a family in KY survived the tornado in one of these. It was buried in their yard though, not in the garage.

  34. I fell victim to the quarantine 15. I was already a bit tubby, but now it really shows. So far all efforts to lose it have failed as I do have some physical limitations and hard exercise is not an option. However, I can do light exercises. I'm open to suggestions.

  35. I am diabetic and Dr's changed my meds and put me on Ozempic. It killed my appetite. Lost 28# recently but lost the other by hard work and cutting down on what I eat, and eating better choices (Low Carb) tnhawk. My A1C was 5.9 (Dr wants it 6.5 or less) today. Just came from the VA Dr visit. Weight loss is the hardest thing for a diabetic to accomplish. Carbs go straight to fat. When I was 295 (18 months ago) I was miserable and decided to get it off. Takes a committed change of direction to get it off and keep it off. Edited t add; even got some side benefit, my bad right knee pain has eased up somewhat.

  41. A guy I know is a relatively good guy, and even though he was using self defense, he's charged with murder. What brings us to his murder charge stems from the circumstances. This guy had a beef with another guy that lives not too far from me (I think it was woman problems). He goes to the victims house to confront him, supposedly to just have a conversation. When he pulls up, before he can even get out of his truck, the victim comes out of the house and comes at him. They get into a fistfight, the victim's girlfriend comes out of the house with a handgun, put's it to the guy's head while they are rolling on the ground, and pulls the trigger (there wasn't a round in the chamber). He manages to get the gun away from the girl and throws it into the edge of the woods. Still fighting, he finally gets the best of the victim, and leaves him laying there on the ground. Thinking he is just passed out, he goes back to his truck about the time the cops show up. Come to find out the victim is dead. The guy had a loaded firearm in his truck, but at no time did he try to retrieve it and shoot the victim. Even though it does appear that he was fighting the victim in self defense, the fact that he drove to the victim's house under less than friendly circumstances, get's him a murder charge. I'm just throwing this out there, because the guy isn't a bad guy and I truly don't think he was trying to kill anybody. The victim is dead none the less, and he put himself into a situation where he is charged with murder. It just goes to show you that you need to be very careful the situations we put ourselves in, because things can go bad fast, and you either wind up dead (he is very lucky the girlfriend's gun didn't have a round in the chamber) or possibly in prison for the rest of your life.
