I lived in Central Oklahoma for 13 years, very near to Moore OK (Google "Moore F5 tornado"). I've seen many lives saved due to storm shelters, and many lost due to the absence of one. I was also a trained storm-spotter for a Central Oklahoma police department, so tornadoes were part of our lives for quite a while (but then in 10 years in Mt. Juliet, we've had VERY NEAR misses 3 times, including just a week ago - 0.2 of a mile !!! What the h*ll ???). If you get a commercial one, just make sure it's passed the Texas Tech wind test, whether you're looking at underground or aboveground. My only reservation about aboveground (assuming the shelter itself is properly built) is the sufficiency of the anchoring system. Proper strength, number and length of anchor bolts (into concrete !!) is the question. Do your research. And don't let some salesman tell you "we're approved". GET PROOF !! I've already talked to two outfits around Nashville since last week that flat-a** lied to my face about testing, once I checked their claims. If their own product has not been tested, or they won't give you the results, I won't go near it. Anybody that wants you to "take their word for it" --- you're out the door, guys.5 points

The issue I had with one of those is when the building comes down on top of it you can’t get out and depending on where you live flooding will be an issue.4 points

Make sure you register it with the county. https://www.williamsoncounty-tn.gov/918/Storm-Shelter-Registration#:~:text=Use the online registration form, aid to victims of disasters.3 points

Absolutely mint older Anschutz 1517, with heavy barrel. Accuracy is wowza! Comes with Weaver 4x16x42 with A.O, and 100 rounds of Hornady 17gr V-Max, already sighted in. I bought this new about 20 years ago. I'm going to call round count at less than 200. $9502 points

Being offered for sale is an Anschutz 1710 HB .22lr. Pictures are shown with a Weaver classic 6-24 scope which has a fine reticle with a very small dot. The rifle is being sold without the scope and rings but may be included for an extra fee. The rifle is in good shape but there are some small marks in the stock finish. If you have been wanting one but want to save a grand, this may be the rifle for you. I am selling the rifle, one magazine, and the picatinny rail. Buyer must be TN resident able to purchase a firearm. Bill of sale and TN DL# required. Cash only. Thanks!2 points

I'll take my chances with a storm before I climb into one of those things in the floor. I'm not climbing into my coffin of my own free will.2 points

Most of the ones I have seen were placed with the opening fairly close to the outside garage door. If you have a decent sized suburban 2 car garage, a normal size sedan/crossover style car (Not a giant SUV or pickup truck), and don't have a ton of crap stored against the front wall the car is forward enough to easily access the opening of the shelter without moving the vehicle. Without stuff stored on my front wall I have 6+ feet behind my wife's car to the garage door. Plenty of room for the shelter access if I had one. I looked into the inground garage shelters as an option when we were building our house but due to our floor plan and how the house sat on the slope of the lot I was able to do a larger reinforced block and cement crawlspace shelter instead.2 points

You would want one with a door the either slides or opens inward. Otherwise debris could block your exit. Wouldn't be a bad idea to keep and ax or sledge hammer in there either.2 points

I let several walk on Friday morning. Oddly, I've had the experience more than once lately of seeing late season fawns with the does I've seen. I did jump a bear on the way in - he was much more interested in the fallen apples than he was in me.2 points

We've been kicking around for years the idea of getting one of those storm shelters that are put in your garage floor slab. I think we are going to move forward on this as I don't see us moving anytime soon. Does anyone have one? How do you like it? Any advice or local installer recommendations? Thanks in advance.1 point

Like many folks, I felt the last tornadoes were too close for comfort. I haven’t seen a swarm of tornadoes like that in a long time. I am looking at several vendors. I lived in Oklahoma for quite a few years, when I was a kid we always went to our neighbors basement. After seeing the aftermath of so many tornadoes, I just don’t think riding it out in the bathroom is best idea. I want a professional shelter. I looked at Fains in Jackson and a couple venders in Nashville. Haven’t made my mind up. I like the convenience of a steel safe room but I want to make sure it’s up to testing standards. In ground away from the house at zero dark thirty makes a little slower to get too.1 point

I don't see the issue really. I just saw on the news a family in KY survived the tornado in one of these. It was buried in their yard though, not in the garage.1 point

Oh no, I don't process the deer for my friends, I drop them off at the processor after I field dress them. Hunter's Harvest here does a whole deer as summer sausage for about $150, and $1 a lb for cheese and jalapeno if you so desire. This year he paid $220 for fifteen 3lb logs, which he says is a good deal. I have quartered them before for a friend that does his own processing, but that is as far as I will go, too much work to do a whole deer for them. Me, I usually do a 15lb (5 logs), batch, but sometimes I will do two if I am comparing seasonings, cheeses etc. This year I have a whole bunch summer sausage logs left, so may either skip it or make it late in the season.1 point

If you routinely park a car on top of it, how quickly can you access it? Flooding is definitely a concern, but I feel sure the folks who design these things have given that and the possibility of debris piling up on top of it more than a passing thought.1 point

This. This is a high profile case and the investigators know that the people involved aren't flight risks. They are going to take their time and make sure that they get this right.1 point

No. The law presumes that they were there to do you harm. It makes no presumption about your state of mind. If someone breaks into your house, with you inside, they intend harm. “But Cap, they didn’t know you were inside.” Well it ain’t hard to find out. Knock on the door. Ring the doorbell. The law presumes that they have entered with intent to cause death or serious bodily injury or to rape you. Your mindset at that point is irrelevant.1 point

Welcome, spent lots of time in Indiana over the years, college, lots of relatives and friends. Even considered southern Indiana when we decided to move. Indiana is also a gun friendly state, but TN has warmer weather, less snow and better taxes so Indiana didn't make the final cut. I think you will love it here.1 point

If you're keeping all this inside the house, I hope the house is on a slab. That aside, store the ammo in anything you like. Barring natural disaster, it'll last longer than you. Any sort of desiccant in the containers will suffice.1 point

Got lucky this year, two eight point bucks, one on opening rifle and one on the 15th. Both went to friends that don't hunt, now I am looking for a doe for me, and maybe another for one that went all summer sausage on the first one, if I get my doe.1 point

I would consider anyone keeping the information about a leak out of the china lab a traitor to their country. And the way he has prevented people from using medications that have proven to at least help, out of the hands of Americans a traitorous act.1 point

You’re fine with a loaded gun inside of your vehicle. You cannot legally carry it outside of the vehicle.1 point

As always, this is NOT LEGAL ADVICE!! The confusion typically comes from the fact that there is no "hard and fast rule" here. Someone who forcibly enters and has no legal right to be there creates a presumption that you (the rightful occupant) are under a reasonable fear of death or grave bodily harm. That presumption can be overcome by the facts, though. For example, an intruder forcibly enters, is completely naked, and falls asleep on the couch. You walk into the room some time later and find him there. The fact that the intruder meets that presumption definition does not give the occupant the right to shoot him. Under those circumstances, the presumption is overcome by the facts. It would not be reasonable to be in fear at that point. Yes, if you change the facts or add facts, that could change the result. But that's the point. The facts will dictate what is allowable as self-defense. The classic example of a self-defense presumption is you hear glass break in the middle of the night. You get up, see a dark figure and fire at that figure. Under those circumstances, the shooter is presumed to have been in reasonable fear. The shooter would not have to prove that fear was reasonable at trial. If the prosecution can prove that the fear wasn't reasonable, the presumption is overcome and a conviction is possible (maybe even likely). The only thing the self-defense presumption does is change who has the burden of proof at trial. In either case, the facts matter. So, change the facts even slightly, you can get a different answer. As a general matter, it still comes down to reasonableness. If someone forcibly enters the house but you have any reason NOT to be in reasonable fear, don't shoot. Just because a person is in your house is not a get out of jail free card.1 point

In Tennessee, people can justifiably use deadly force to defend themselves or others if they believe there is an imminent threat of death or serious injury. There is no duty to retreat from your home. Do you believe the intruder in your home poses a threat of death of serious injury? Then you are legally justified in using deadly force to prevent that death or injury. You cannot use deadly force to prevent the intruder from walking out the door with your 4K UHD television.1 point

A guy I know is a relatively good guy, and even though he was using self defense, he's charged with murder. What brings us to his murder charge stems from the circumstances. This guy had a beef with another guy that lives not too far from me (I think it was woman problems). He goes to the victims house to confront him, supposedly to just have a conversation. When he pulls up, before he can even get out of his truck, the victim comes out of the house and comes at him. They get into a fistfight, the victim's girlfriend comes out of the house with a handgun, put's it to the guy's head while they are rolling on the ground, and pulls the trigger (there wasn't a round in the chamber). He manages to get the gun away from the girl and throws it into the edge of the woods. Still fighting, he finally gets the best of the victim, and leaves him laying there on the ground. Thinking he is just passed out, he goes back to his truck about the time the cops show up. Come to find out the victim is dead. The guy had a loaded firearm in his truck, but at no time did he try to retrieve it and shoot the victim. Even though it does appear that he was fighting the victim in self defense, the fact that he drove to the victim's house under less than friendly circumstances, get's him a murder charge. I'm just throwing this out there, because the guy isn't a bad guy and I truly don't think he was trying to kill anybody. The victim is dead none the less, and he put himself into a situation where he is charged with murder. It just goes to show you that you need to be very careful the situations we put ourselves in, because things can go bad fast, and you either wind up dead (he is very lucky the girlfriend's gun didn't have a round in the chamber) or possibly in prison for the rest of your life.0 points
