I fail to see how this thread brings any value to this community. What does it do for the whole of the community for one group to point at another and tell them they suck? Memphis doesn’t need me to defend it - and I’m sure our members who live there are fine with the rest of y’all staying home. But, I just don’t get it.2 points

Most of Memphis’ issues are either drug-related or certain areas of the city or both. Remove the crime stats from all of the housing projects & areas of low income & the stats look minimal.2 points

All true, but also the way of pop culture. Although I'm old enough to have seen all these shows during their original runs (and many times over in syndication), there are a lot of even earlier TV shows, as well as radio programs, that I never saw (or heard). Many of these were fondly remembered by my parents and grandparents, I'm sure they also lamented the passing from memory of those as well. Another aspect to consider, from the late 40's through the widespread advent of cable, satellite, and now streaming television, the "big three" networks controlled the airwaves, dominating ratings and viewership in a way that no network or single show can do now. It would be interesting to see how many of these widely popular shows from an earlier era would perform in today's world of limitless channels, shows and networks. I suspect at least some of them would have never garnered the following they had during their original runs ...2 points

The "Pre-Fab 4" was a slang moniker applied to the Monkees during their TV run. It was in reference to the nature of their founding, which, as you indicated, was to imitate the Beatles. Prior quote: "Proof positive that talent isn't a prerequisite for music stardom ... " Sales records don't necessarily equate to talent. There are a lot of current musical acts that prove that point conclusively ...2 points

The State of Tennessee hates Memphis. State government pretty much ignores Memphis unless they can get a photo op out of it. Can't say as I blame 'em. Most of Memphis hates Memphis. But they do have a great zoo!2 points

Nightvision vs thermal. Do you have any experience with either? What do you prefer and do you have experience shooting at night? What is your budget?2 points

I think we've had a thread similar to this once or twice a year for at least a decade now. TGO hates Memphis.2 points

That's a nice idea, but it doesn't hold up to real scrutiny. First, if we're going to say that statues and monuments are about education then for every Columbus Square and statue we'd need something to show the devastation to the locals that European colonization brought to the New World. For every Washington and Jefferson, we need a Crown Loyalist to show we were NOT a united country at the time. For every symbol of westward expansion we'll need to reconcile the near-genocide that came along with it. For every Lee, NBF, and Stonewall statue we need Lincoln, Grant, Harriett Tubman, MLK, and enslaved people monuments. Then we go to meddling . . . for every Vietnam War memorial, we need a peace and anti-war sign and statues of protestors. But let's keep on meddling . . . For every 9/11 memorial we need a plaque saying that America deserved it for our oil-grabbing Imperialism policies, or because we're infidels, or whatever reason anyone might think. Or let's get some feathers REALLY ruffled . . . For every fallen officer memorial we need a Defund The Police/BLM marker. That's what it would mean to teach EVERY perspective through our statues and monuments. Not only is it not practical, it's not good public policy. Second, the statues aren't creating dialogue. All I hear is shouting and it's impossible to have dialogue when everyone's shouting. The folks who think the statues are about history and are filled with pride by the legacy they symbolize can't hear their neighbors who feel like second-class citizens every time they pass by those same statues. Likewise, the ones shouting that everyone who likes the statues are a bunch of white supremacists can't hear that many of the supporters see them as representative of less government not slavery. If the statues of the Confederacy need to remain so that dialogue will continue, maybe we need to think hard about exactly where those statues should be so the shouting can become dialogue. By its nature, our public spaces, particularly government buildings and their environs reflect who we are and the ideals we seek as a people. But all humans are flawed. We seek to showcase the finest qualities of humanity like courage, loyalty, and the desire for freedom even when it's a misguided vision of freedom framed by the times. Or in some cases like NBF, the people memorialized in our public spaces can represent our ability to grow and change to such an extreme that we can be unrecognizable as who we were before. We need to ask ourselves - When we see that the men and women we've held up as examples of those ideals are flawed in such ways that they no longer inspire us as a community to achieve those ideals for ourselves, do they still deserve a place of prominence in our public spaces? Are we better served by studying them in a more reflective and contemplative location like a museum or a battlefield instead of idealizing them? Having a divisive monument without proper context (like the NBF on I-65) doesn't create dialogue, it only deepens divides. Our unique-in-the-world 1st Amendment has allowed us to create a unique situation with these statues. Nowhere else in the world do they have a plethora of monuments to the losers of a war. Outside museums and memorials to the fallen soldiers (usually within cemeteries), you don't see Hirohito or Yamamoto statues in Japan or Mussolini statues in Italy or Batista in Cuba, especially not erected AFTER the war. That would be crazy, right? Italy actually took an interesting approach. Much of the fascist propaganda and statues/carvings were destroyed, but what's left now remains as a reminder. Not to support a fascist past, but to avoid a fascist future. Maybe we could learn from that. How can we as all Americans use our Civil War monuments from both the blue and the gray to help us remember the terrible cost of letting our divisions grow so much that we start shooting each other?2 points

Figured I'd take a break on the deer hunting and take a fishing trip yesterday morning. The bite was slow dragging baits but still ended up with 7 fish in the boat by 1pm. Most the fish was eater size in the 8-12lb range but did put a 60lb and a 35lb in the boat. My buddy caught the 35lb drifting a couple rods a few feet off the bottom in the front of the boat and I was dragging two rods out the back with my dragging setup. The bait used was crappie heads and skipjack. Here's a couple pics of the 60, both the 60 and 35 was released to be caught another day. Took pics of the 35 my buddy caught but turns out the sun was right in his eyes and did not make for a good facial expression. Didn't catch it till going through the pics after we turned it back. Can't beat a big fish trip after a two month dry spell of no catfishing.1 point

I'm a little different from most, in that while I gig and record with tube amps, they're not the usual suspect Fenders or Marshalls. I use mainly two different amps depending on the application and venue size-- and neither of these amps are currently in production, nor are they easy to come by. For larger venues I use a Kustom 72 Coupe-- (4 x 6L6), 2-channel 72 watt 2x12 combo. For smaller venues, I use a Kustom Defender 15 watt (2 x EL84) single channel class AB head with a 1x12 cab. The 15 watt has a more Vox-like character, while the 72 watter is more of a hybrid Fender/Vox sound. I have other amps as well, but I have used these amps for at least 10 years and I know how to easily dial in my sound on either one. If I were choosing between an AC15 and a Blues Jr., I'd probably go with the Jr.-- I Do love AC15 tones, but if you're doing any gigging, I think the Jr. is slightly more versatile and less of a 1-trick pony, and the Jr. is MUCH lighter (17 lbs lighter) than the AC15.1 point

Many are kept alive via networks such as Nick At Nite, Me TV & others. I used to argue if a network aired nothing but Top 10 shows from 30-40 years ago on current tv it would swamp the new shows in the ratings. TBS used to do that before they went "woke".1 point

I don't have much experience with the lower end stuff. I've spent 100s of hours behind NV and thermal. I currently run an N-vision NOX on a 308 mostly. If I'm in an area with a higher human density, I'll sometimes drop back to a 5.56. If you've never hunted at night there are a few things to consider. Animals behave quite a bit different at night in regard to humans. You're tactics for day hunting can be used at night, but a coyote may not run away just because it sees you. Quite often it will come in to investigate you. I will circle down wind. I've watched one Stay within 30 yards of my partner and keeping pace the entire time. They can see the red glow from the ir light if it's in the 850 nm range. If it's never been hunted, it's probably not an issue. Some dogs look just like coyotes in a thermal. I always ask the coyote if it's a dog if I'm in an area with dogs. If I have any doubt, I'll literally say " hay dog ". If it's a dog, it will go nuts and start barking. A coyote will never make a sound, but it will watch you intently. In Tennessee you can "hunt" coyotes at night....yet. You do have every right to protect yourself, your animals, and your property from coyotes if they are attacking. If I was hunting in Texas, South Carolina, ect.. this is what I'd do. 1: get a game camera and find out when it's coming it. 2: make sure it has a reason to be in front of the camera 3: be ready at the time the camera indicates activity. A 2nd opinion would be a game call. I've used electronics, mouth calls, and my voice. I called a coyote just to get it's attention while my partner got into position. His shooting vector was too close in line with a structure. Afterwards I turned around just to have one 20 yards behind me sneaking up on me. A 3rd option would be to find some good trappers in the area. I don't trap, but it could be an issue with your dogs. Good luck.1 point

Yes, that’s the one I have. This is the newer version: Sightmark Wraith 4K Max 3-24x50 w/IR Digital Night Vision Riflescope, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0874X3BM7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_VC2BZTAT9WHG3890W3ZH I don’t know alleycat72 except for seeing him here on TGO. He probably has much more experience with the NV and Thermal scopes than I do. I just wanted to give you an option to look at until someone else that’s used them more than I have was able to add to the conversation. Good luck in your search, hope you find what works for you soon.1 point

Glad to hear that it looks better than it sounded. Full recovery is in my prayers! You would be happy out to 150 with the Wraith for sure and can always upgrade to a better IR. The factory works fine but there are much better ones available if you find you enjoy messing around with it. I’m going to get a thermal next, but it’s a big, big price difference to get into that game. The technology isn’t cheap so neither are the optics. They sure are fun though! Good luck in the hunt and hope you bust the yote that got your Boston!1 point

I just got back from the vet with my Boston. He has 4 drain tubes, stitches, lots of meds and an attitude (to be expected). Time will tell as to outcome but the vet thought he might fair better at home. Vet could not get him to eat anything and he ate soon after getting home. The wife and he are now piled up binging Netflix for the weekend, then back to the vet Monday. I am looking at the Wraiths and some versions of the ATNs. I was just hoping some folks on here had some first hand experience with some models that have performed well. I don't have to have all the bells and whistles, just suitable clarity to see and identify targets out to about 150 yards max and good accuracy. Just need to take car of my property area.1 point

Wow! Hope you’re dog is okay and heals up soon. If you want to get a NV setup without breaking the bank but still not be buying junk, look at the Sightmark Wraith. The version I have is the HD version but they came out with a 4K version no. Would definitely help you out with what you’re needing. You can record video day or night with it as well.1 point

You might need a bore scope, I do not have one, I would like to have one. Here is some reading you will need to understand what a "ring in the barrel is". https://alphamunitions.com/carbon-ring-build-up-resulting-problems-and-a-cure/ Though I’ve heard mention of carbon ring build-up it wasn’t until I got to the 6 Creedmoor portion of the large/small rifle primer comparison (last Kauber’s Corner article) was I aware first hand of the problems caused by carbon (powder residue) build up in the bore. An established carbon ring manifests itself with sudden and progressive spikes in pressure; pressures bordering on the dangerous and in most cases degradation inaccuracy will result. The tremendous amount of heat and pressure transforms carbon fouling into a ceramic coating that is difficult to remove once it has welded itself in your rifling.1 point

Tork & Nesmith were the only "real" musicians when the band formed. Jones was hired for his looks first & singing second. Dolenz had some keyboard & piano talent but I don't think he was Billy Joel or Elton John level when they started. He could certainly sing well enough, IMO. I prefer his songs over Jones' as well. Jack Nicholson was one of the writers for their movie, Head. I didn't know that until recently. Awful movie too.1 point

I remember the TV show and how it led to stardom. They did some really good music. One thing I always liked about them was their sense of humor. Probably the silliest rockers ever.1 point

I haven't been into Memphis in many years. Not because of crime, just haven't been. There are good people there just as everywhere. I am sure they are overwhelmed by the bad right now as we all have been lately. Our fellow TN citizens should all have our full support, well, the above mentioned good ones. We should all push our elected representatives and assist law enforcement to take out the trash. If we don't?1 point

This is good. one of the local shops here has Taylor & Co in stock with both plow handle and birdshead grips. A nice SA in 357 would be a great trial gun and perfect companion to a 357 lever gun.1 point

All these statues being taken down were never about history to begin with. I find the claims that removing them is an attempt to erase or rewrite history laughable. They were not commissioned by historical societies, municipalities, museums, veterans groups, or any department of state/federal government. They were paid for in whole or in part by individuals and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The statues and memorials were put in place by confederate sympathizers, racist, and segregationist as an effort to reshape the history of the civil war and to preserve confederate culture in the south through the first half of the 20th century. They were used specifically as a tool for the intimidation and oppression of blacks. That continued on deep into the 1960s. There were clearly observable spikes in the commission of new memorials and statues leading up to and following turbulent times like Brown v. Board of Ed and the Civil Rights act in 64. It was undeniably an attempt to fight the rising tide of civil rights and desegregation. The United Daughters of the Confederacy also fought against any school textbook that claimed slavery was the central issue of the Civil War and helped frame the states rights argument. They worked to downplay the cruelty of slave owners and the horrors of slavery. Those that currently rail against what they see as attempts to rewrite history should study previous attempts to do exactly that and pay close attention to who was attempting the rewriting. Now this one in particular was the work of an private citizen on his own private land. His heirs and the current owners of the land want it down, as is their right. It was cheap crappy statue to begin with and it certainly did not age well. Good riddance and no great loss.1 point

FWIW, this was meant to be tonge in cheek, because its a bit funny versus it being a serious thing. I appreciated it after a year that has been pretty tough politically in the activism arena and thought the humor of the petition was more self evident than it may have be or that most like to see the humor in things. My bad.1 point

A friend of mine relayed to me a story of having dinner with the Col. at SHOT Show in 01. When asked his thoughts on the ACOG he said that if it continued to hold up in combat usage that it would be a passable optic. So I think that he would have approved of the LPVO on the scout rifle as it seems he wasn’t the luddite that some would portray him to be.1 point
