While I understand the good intentions and such behind this post, I’m going to preemptively take action and close it down. I appreciate that all who have posted so far did so with thoughtfulness and care, but it’s best to not tempt fate any further. Now I’m gonna put the phone down until tomorrow and spend some time with the family. Happy thanksgiving y’all!3 points

In the now-closed thread on the Rittenhouse verdict, which chucktshoes wisely closed because of excessive thread drift, bobsguns posted this: -- Sure, we're ready for something better. But who? How? One has to be insane to get involved in politics these days, IMO. It's an excellent question, and one that I write about occasionally in other venues. Some short thoughts -- There are different levels of getting involved in politics. At the level of actually running for office, most people aren't going to find the idea attractive, useful, or even tolerable, and for a variety of reasons. But there are other types of involvement, some requiring minimal effort but offering potential rewards. 1. Contact your elected officials and let them know your thoughts. If they're doing the right thing, thank them. But even if you know the official holds a view diametrically opposed to yours, let him/her know you disagree and are watching. Politicians spend a lot of time in an echo chamber hearing from their sycophants how wise and great they are. Reminding them there are other views -- and reminding them in an intelligent and reasoned way -- may not change their minds about anything...but if they start hearing the same "other view" more and more, they might start reconsidering. 2. Choose your information sources wisely. News media today are starkly polarized along political lines but they range across a wide spectrum of polarization, and there are some in or near the middle that have less bias. Seek them out. Also, consume information from both the right and left (maybe not much at the extreme limits) because there are good points to be made on both sides. You might learn something that could influence your own thinking, or you might gain some insights that will help you refute claims from the other side. I know there's a certain crude appeal to dismissing all news and information media by saying "They're all liars and you can't trust any of them," but that's simply not true for intelligent people willing to do little work and exercise their critical thinking skills. 3. Work toward making things better. An excellent way to do this is for looking for areas where there's an opportunity to make a difference. For example, there are people on both sides of the aisle who favor better voter identification laws. The left wants them to prevent voter discrimination, and the right wants them to prevent voter fraud, but the operative point here is that there are people on both sides who agree on this issue. To a small extent, we've seen the same thing in some of the discussion of the infrastructure bill -- both the right and left recognize that we need better roads and bridges and a more robust transportation system. And there's a growing chorus of voices from Dems and the GOP for instituting term limits for elected officials. What if politicians and voters on both the right and the left cooperated on those issues where there's agreement instead of demonizing each other because of issues where they disagree? No, we wouldn't have heaven on earth, but we'd have progress. 4. Finally, and perhaps most important: When you see politicians or news organizations on the left or the right that promote general hatred and contempt toward the other side just because they're on the other side, recognize that you are being played. Whether it's Tucker Carlson or Rachel Maddow, Anastasio Ocasio-Cortez or Marjorie Taylor Greene, Breitbart or Democratic Underground, understand that they're promoting anger and divisiveness because they profit from doing so. They want more money, more votes, more campaign donations, larger audiences, additional sponsors. People working together to solve problems simply doesn't pay as well for politicians or the news media. I've written enough for now. There are plenty of smart people with good intentions and creative ideas here on this forum. I'd be interested in your thoughts. (Those of you who are morons, please hold your comments. ) Cheers, Whisper2 points

I had a long drawn out response to this, but thought better than to post it. You make valid points and have good ideas. While we have the best system of government there is, that system is broken beyond repair. Our government is corrupt from top to bottom. To them its all about political gamesmanship, money and power. We, the people, no longer matter.2 points
-
Yep, and those on the left have a similarly long list of Republican politicians that they believe prove conservatives are stupid, incompetent, and immoral. Extremists on both the left and the right cry loudly that their side is good and the other evil...while those who make money off that kind of divisiveness cheer it all on. Aren't we ready for something better than that?2 points

Yes, that part of their defense strategy seemed questionable, at best. It's equally hard to argue a justifiable homicide of any sort when you chase an unarmed guy down, hold him, then kill him. I'm not a lawyer, and didn't follow the case very closely, but pretty much everything I've read about it screamed murder from the start ...2 points

It has to be sent to an FFL in South Carolina and transferred to him there. The law doesn't care exactly how it gets to the S.C. FFL other than he can't take it to them because it's not his until it's transferred. Either you can hand deliver it to the SC FFL or you can ship it. Shipping is where things get sketchy. Most carriers like USPS, FedEx and UPS won't take a handgun from a private party and ship it to an FFL. They will ship to a manufacturer for things like safety recalls, but not to a normal dealer. That's why most interstate private party transfers end up going FFL to FFL. You'll pay your local TN FFL to ship it to his local SC FFL who will then charge him their transfer fee. The other option is that you can loan a firearm across state lines for lawful sporting purposes. The laws make no mention of how long a loan can last. You could loan it to him indefinitely but it remains your property. He can't sell it or give it away because it's not his. If you leave it to him in your will and you die while it's still loaned to him, it will simply become his property at the time of your death. Inherited firearms do not have to pass through an FFL, even across state lines. See Question #4 here: https://www.atf.gov/resource-center/docs/0813-firearms-top-12-qaspdf/download You could also loan it to him until you go for a visit in SC, then you can hand deliver it to a local FFL who will do a 4473 transfer to him.1 point

Had a winning bid in on a H&K USP Compact in .357Sig, blued slide. This is possibly the 2nd rarest USP that H&K ever imported/sold into the United States, based on what I've read. I was cruising along the last two days with a winning bid of $1,025 & feeling pretty good about it. The auction ended at 9:30am this morning. But about 9am, the Big Bully Boys showed up & kicked sand all over me. My paltry bid got left behind like the fat chick at the prom. The winning bid ended up being an even $2,000. Ho Lee Chit! I've lost many auctions on GB but never quite by that much. Clearly I need to be buying some lottery tickets..........................1 point

This sums up pretty well my thoughts on politics, politicians, and those who make their living talking and pontificating about politics and politicians. It's the main reason (besides the fact I find these broadcasts incredibly boring) that I don't listen to talk radio, talking head shows, podcasts, etc. I also rarely spend much time listening to political speeches by politicians or the talking head crowd either, more mindless preaching to the choir. Full disclosure: Being a moron has never kept me from sharing my thoughts (or lack thereof) before, so I figured why start now ...1 point

There's merits to both sides of the argument, IMO. Who doesn't want a bargain on a buy? Can't get a bargain when you have to bid high from the git-go, IMO. And as you say, if you want, bid enough to get it & never mind the bargain. I'm still surprised a USP brought $2k..............1 point

The Edge I handled had a pull every bit of 5#. While not awful by 509 standards, I think it’s unacceptable for a so-called competition model, especially one that costs this much. I suppose it’s possible other examples might have a lighter trigger than the one I played with, but I’ve never had a FNS or a 509 with anything like a good trigger (VP9, Canik TP9 and PPQ).1 point

Yes, eventually. I wanted to get an idea of how it was gonna look together before i stripped and patinaed the rest of it. Also wanna see how maintenance intensive it is first. It may end up cerakoted in the end but Im digging the look.1 point
-
So decided since this rifle has been free so far I would try something different before I decide to cerakote the rifle. The epoxy in the stock cured tight so I hand sanded the stock and forearm down to 800 grit. Then I used a method I found online of putting on tru oil and mixing it with Armor all. It has a catalyst effect on the tru oil causing it to cure faster and harder. I was able to hand rub a dozen coats of tru oil into the stock and forearm. I then went after the receiver. I wet sanded it down to 1k grit, then using a technique I used on knives, I did a mustard and vinegar steam patina in the receiver. The result is a gray, antique worn look. It looks much better than the rusty freckles tat where on it. For now Im gonna call this one good enough for the deer woods.1 point

Yep your 2 cents vs my 2 cents. I disagree with you as well. A timed auction is an opportunity to bid within the stated time frame. If I wish to bid an amount for that item, I can do so. Bid high from the beginning if you think it will work. Or don't bid. We each have an equal opportunity to place a bid we think is appropriate on that item. The time of placement is the key. Early or late. But bid in good faith. If I bid and have a high bid at the stated end time...I should win. Adding 15 minutes after that end is not the way I play the game. As for sniping, the same thing applies. You or I have the opportunity to bid. High bids are shown, so bid higher if you want it. Waiting until the end to bid is not a crime. You, or I, can see the highest bid and decide whether or not to go further. I doubt you will agree, but's my 2 cents on the subject. And for what it's worth. I have been sniped in bidding. And I have been the sniper as well.1 point

It matters to people who watch interview shows to help form their opinions. No one watches Tucker Carlson or Rachel Maddow to find out what happened; they watch to confirm their biases and to validate their views that people on the other side of the political spectrum are stupid, incompetent, and/or immoral. Carlson and Maddow are both happy to deliver that kind of bigotry. An interview by a respected news outlet would garner more viewership from people whose minds weren't already made up and wanted to hear Rittenhouse interviewed by a journalist and not an advocate. Does appearing first on Carlson's show harm Rittenhouse much in the long run? Probably not. But it was a missed opportunity by Rittenhouse to make a positive impression on members of the public who were still undecided.1 point

Rare is the gun model that has a worse trigger on the later generations, IMO. I've got a FNX-9 & the trigger is nothing to write home about it. The reason I've kept it is its accuracy. Now, the newer H&K VP9 models such as the SK & long slide all have hugely improved triggers over what they were initially released with. Light years better than Glock & M&P both. But triggers are also subjective. Ken has some super nice 1911s & he may be a wee bit spoiled from the them? But he is like E.F. Hutton: when he speaks, we listen.1 point

When 30% of people (due to the mainstream media's adversarial reporting of the case ) think that the people Kyle shot were black ,I don't know that it matters who his first interview is with. There is truth and there is lie and the people who still care about the former are vastly outnumbered in the media by those who use the latter to push their leftist agenda. This is one of the most well documented (on video none the less) shootings in history and anyone who takes the time to objectively and honestly look at the evidence will conclude this was self defense. Yet here we are discussing whether who he did an interview with looks bad for him. The facts are the facts . Dude was not doing anything illegal when he went to the car lot with the rest of the group that the car dealership owners hired to keep it from getting burned to the ground and keep the cars from getting smashed. He was not "illegally carrying a rifle" , the fact that he "crossed state lines" is not only irrelevant, it is not ILLEGAL and not even illegal to do it with a semi auto rifle , it just "sounds bad" to the uneducated , so again, nothing he has done so far is illegal. When Kyle and almost everyone else on the street is threatened by a convicted child RAPIST who spent 15 years in prison (who ANALLY RAPED 5 different 9-11 year old boys while he lived with them) Kyle did not "provoke" a confrontation he avoided it until the child rapist tried to chase him down and take his rifle for which the child rapist got shot. Self defense by definition. Kyle then heads back to where the cops are stationed down the street so he can turn himself in..... So when word gets out that the kid shot one of the other protesters ( more truthfully rioters and looters, ) the chase is on, and people are running after him. It does not matter what their motivation is ( to save the day, stop the "bad guy" , murder, whatever) when they start physically attacking him , kicking him in head with shod foot, hitting him with a skateboard (aggravated assault at the least ) he has the right to defend himself from their unlawful (even if they thought it was lawful) attack. So Huber (the convicted domestic batterer) hits him with the skateboard (lethal force) and then grabs the muzzle of the rifle (lethal force) and gets shot. Self defense by definition. Then Grosskruetz (the guy who actually IS ILLEGALLY carrying a gun because he was a carrying concealed without a valid permit) runs up on Rittenhouse with gun drawn and when he points it at Kyle he gets shot . Self defense by definition. However that's not at all how the mainstream media have portrayed this case. According to them he "is a white supremacist who crossed state lines with a short barreled rifle and came there to shoot protesters" and all that crap. The media is either completely incompetent (unlikely ) or pushing a leftist agenda (ding ding ding!) and outright LYING about what happened to gin up sentiment against a kid who was trying to do something positive for the community where he works and where his dad lives. He was there guarding a business that had been looted and had inventory (cars) destroyed and he also was there attempting to render medical aid to people who needed it. Yeah he sounds terrible.1 point

And it's that easy for bad decisions to get you killed.... Once you go inside the house STAY INSIDE the house and call the cops. Don't go back outside armed and confront them. This is tragic but completely preventable.1 point

Worth it? From a monetary stand point absolutely not. My health insurance covered my medical bills. No idea who covered theres but I never heard anything about it. My car insurance didnt pay out anything, I had liability only and since I intentionally used the truck as a battering ram it did not rule it is an accident. Their car insurance company sent me and my insurance a letter demanding payment, but I simply sent them the police report and they magically decided I wasnt liable for any damages due to the wreck happening while their client was in commission of a crime. I did not get charged with any crimes, using the vehicle as a blocking maneuver the first time was not seen as criminal since they had just committed armed robbery, and ramming them the second time was justified self defense since they had fired shots at me. I did go to court as state witness multiple times and they are both currently serving 10 years each for a list of felonies and misdemeanors for which they were found guilty. At the end of the day, the decision to try and stop them was rash and impulsive and cost me far more than the $500 Glock. But its hard for me to say it wasnt worth it totally because those two scumbags will never forget that, and at least for the next few years they will be in prison instead of free to continue ripping people off. At the end of the day, if i could do it over I would just call 911 and at the most, try to keep up to get a tag number. But events like this happen in seconds and at least partly because the Marine Corps has engrained me to do something, anything when the #### hits the fan I reacted purely on instinct and did what I thought was best at the time.1 point

The only relevance to this creeps race being black is that the media will not hype the story. It's very obvious when something horrible like this happens and it "happens" to be a non- white there is a delay in info and negative speculation that is not afforded a white person. Why? Pushing stories where White Supremacist radicals kill people is working very well to divide this country. Facts be dammed, the ends justify the means...When we are divided we are easy to control. If the media was honest and treated all equal in their reporting we wouldn't be so close to losing the rights we have left in this Country. But diminished rights seems to be on their agenda. Especially the 2nd A.1 point

True enough, but who is going to decipher which calls get a cop and which get a mental health specialist? 911 dispatchers have a tough-enough job, but it's been my experience (25 years as a volunteer fireman / EMT) that most of them don't have the education to make that kind of call. It was also my experience that a significant proportion of the calls to which I was dispatched were not exactly as described by the dispatcher. For example, one call was for a gas station fire and it turned out that a semi-truck had a smoking brake. Remember that the dispatcher is just relaying information given to him over the telephone, the dispatcher hasn't had a chance to personally evaluate the situation. Whenever I was dispatched to any kind of potentially violent situation the police were dispatched at the same time. Believe me, if I was going into a domestic violence situation, or to one where someone was threatening or had attempted suicide, I wanted the cops there with me. Ideally there would be a way to know when a police response is required and when some other response would be better. But idealism has to take a backseat to realism in most situations that require a 911 response. It's nice to sit in your armchair and think of ways to improve the system, it's a lot tougher to implement those ideas in system that requires immediate responses to dangerous situations.1 point

So this is where Im at now. The cracked is sealed completely with acralock. I drilled a blind hole through the bottom and seated a 1/4" rod about 4" long into the stock and acralocked into place. I decided to just leave the black dot. I can always use wood filler later to help blend it. The stock is hand sanded to 220. The pictures are with it whipped down with a damp rag. Thats the final color im after. Next comes hand sanding to 600 grit then a truoil finish. Then the forearm will get the same treatment. Im happy with it. Total repair cost to date $01 point
