  1. A buddy of mine wanted to get an old rolling block carbine back into the woods but the bad 43 cal barrel had to go. The gun had been reblued at some point and the internals were not molested at all from their original Remington factory fit & function, so it was a fine candidate for a 45-70 conversion. I told him to pick up a nice Ebay barrel at some point and he did just that with the purchase of a Ruger #3 45-70 barrel that was a mint factory take off. I told him the big RB receiver ring can "sleeve in" about any factory barrel from what ever. So, In this shot, what you see is the original square 12 TPI shank cut off and taped with a 15/16ths x 16 TPI internal thread. Once that was done, the Ruger .900 OD 16 TPI shank was turned down to .875 and then lathe turned treads to a hand fit zero wobble fit to the old shank bushing. The trick was to set the old shank extractor cut to clock right in the receiver while at the same time, the Ruger barrel sights clock at 12:o clock over the receiver. Once the proper bushing position was set and marked, The bushing gets JB welded to that exact spot. Then the shank gets the breach block clearance cut and extractor cut via the original shank cut position into the Ruger steel. Here the extractor has been mig welded to its needed extra length after the original chamber was deepened to perfect head space. The cold blue still shows the slight face line of the Ruger barrel in the core of the original shank face. A 1976 made Ruger tube.... A Fun project with great results. Now, only a practical scope set up has to be done. I'll add that picture once I figure something out for his 2.5x fixed Leopold. Gotta Love the way that 300g Rem JHP nudges the shoulder in this ol girl!

  6. I dearly love the .44 Special. Honestly, I never really cared for the .44 magnum. Too much buck and roar for my tastes. Quavodus makes a very good point. The .45 Colt is an outstanding round as well. Most people don't realize that a standard velocity 250gr .45 Colt bullet will go completely through your average whitetail. There's no need to hot rod this fine old round.

  7. If I was gonna buy a big bore revolver, I would get a large frame .45 Colt instead of a .44 Magnum. There's a thing called reloading that is good. If ya'll ain't checked it out already. Look up Linebaugh's loads for specially built .45 Colt revolvers.

  9. Picked up a Henry lever action Sat. .22LR caliber (so I can afford to shoot it), octagon barrel, wood stock, blued steel. But what got me cranked up was it came with a threaded bbl in addition to the octagon shape! I had not seen this combo before then. With rare exceptions, I lust after every octagon barrel rifle I finger bang. Doesn't matter the caliber, they just make my heart rate go way, way up. Sadly, it has the usual buckhorn rear sight, which means that won't work for me as the sight picture is inconsistent. So I also picked up some gently used scopes while I was there. I got two Nikons & one Redfield for $250 OTD! Now the only excuse for bad shots will be.............................. me. Henry still does their lifetime warranty too. Also still made in the USA, which I like.

  11. Case in point. My father gave me a Mauser action rifle he built in 25-06. Factory Remington loads were all over the paper. My first attempt at a hand load now as this rifle stacking bullet after bullet into one slightly enlarging hole at 100 yards. These rounds are also about 10% the price of factory ammo…if you can find it.

  12. Trucking for over 40 years. I have driven them local and over the road. Ive worked on them and dispatched them. Im past the avg age of a truck driver so I must be on borrowed time. Biggest problem I see with the supply chain is one word. California. You talk to any over the road driver and the last place he wants to go is the Port of LA. To many rules and regulations in and out of there. Theres talk of the Guard going in there I think they should get them in there.

  13. There still selling for 650.00 to 900.00 on Gunbraker. I know to there is alot of price gouging going on there also. But I agree with ammo quality. You can taylor a reload to your rifle. I did that with my Henry 41 mag. It shoots those XTP bullets real well with some 2400 under them. Makes a guy just grunt seein it.

  16. Mechanical Engineer by training. Became a Machinist by trade. Made everything from tools for brain surgery to M2 Brownings. 12 hour days on concrete floors turning vise handles had their way with my joints and I got put on light duty for a while. That got me sucked into the world of ISO 9001/13485, MDSAP, and FDA CFR Title 21 part 820. Took roles from Quality Engineer to Quality Manager for a few organizations. Spent several years in Med Device and several years more in Tier 1 and Tier 2 Automotive. Current role is in the firearms industry dealing with our suppliers in both a product engineering and quality engineering capacity.

  18. Here's hoping they can pull on 1 of 2 in Houston. Losing Charlie Morton was very evident on Sunday. Having to play two back to back bullpen games is less than ideal. Between Ian Anderson and Max Fried we should be able to pull one of these wins. I'm staying optimistic anyway

  19. Well here is the final product. I’m very happen with how it turned out and feel much more confident with the red dot. I’ll admit that while I didn’t care for the 507K on the smaller guns, I’m a fan of the slightly larger dots. This Diamond D Denali chest holster is very comfortable as well. I wore it around the woods for about and hour and barely noticed it. I was planning to add the new Timney Glock trigger but was told by Timney that it’s still in the prototype phase for the large frame Glocks. I neglected to take a picture of the job Battlewerx did but it was about as good as you could expect. The fit was PERFECT with no movement in any direction. They also had it milled and sent back within one day of receipt (no coating applied).

  20. What I want to see is for Springfield to do a lightweight Detective Model. I'd buy that at twice the price. But if the SA-35 is half as successful as I think its gonna be, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Springfield make versions nobody ever dreamed of before.

Several of you have been asking for a " basic shooting class" and we all know someone who NEEDS a basic class (whether they know it or not) and this is a great opportunity to get them squared away. This class is all about learning good safe solid combative gun handling (drawing, shooting ,reloading , malfunction clearance) and learning to shoot as efficiently and effectively and as accurately as possible . I'm going to limit this to 12 people so that everyone gets the best experience and the attention they need. If you are interested yourself or you have a candidate for this class in mind let me know. This class will be a study in first aid in a combative environment and treating traumatic injuries most likely suffered in street altercations. This is not a Red Cross first aid class. It is also not an austere environment surgery class. It more closely resembles Military PHTLS (Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support) or TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) with an eye toward treating the kind of wounds typically seen in stabbings, shootings and mass casualty events. This class is a deep dive into the use of direct pressure, tourniquets, hemostatic agents like Quick Clot and Celox , chest seals, pressure bandages and much more. This life saving material is appropriate for treating not only common injuries caused by gunshots, knives and impact weapons but also virtually any penetrating trauma, puncture wound, laceration or cut. This one will be limited to 20 students. My good friend and medical skills mentor Jamie Jackson will be assisting with this class. Jamie brings over 40 years of experience in the medical field and is a wealth of knowledge. He has worked in healthcare for 48 years. Jamie was a Navy Corpsman (non-combat) '73-'82. 35. My magazines are stamped Made in Italy. Look to be mec gar mags with the springfield logo engraved on them. I recieved my gun Friday, Its definitely worth the msrp, I would have waited had i not got in early before the crazy price war. I cleaned it and ran 2 magazines of 147 gr speer lawman through it, very accurate, smooth shooting gun. Trigger pull measured 4.5 pounds, crisp break. sights are good, pistol felt well balanced and typical springfield good fit and finish. Im very happy with this gun and am on the list for another one, but i wont overpay for it. I'll put more rounds through it this week, been super busy the last few days. Pics i have are too big to attach, but it really is a very nice weapon.

  38. Can't say for absolute sure, but I think the cylinders may be heat treated differently. The .44 Special cylinder may be too short for the Magnum cartridge. Isn't that a 5 shooter? The frame may not be up to the stress. There's a reason Taurus didn't just make that gun a .44 magnum to start with. I wouldn't try it.

  42. You mean the 5 posts of anti-vax propaganda you rudely inserted into a thread commemorating the passing of a military leader and former Secretary of State? To parse it terms you applied to the UT fans at the Ole Miss game, "That was a trashy, despicable display". An entire thread is dedicated to COVID. You ought to confine your wild, unsubstantiated ideas on that topic, there.

  44. Well other than the primers those prices I quoted were today's prices that is if the XTP's were in stock. If they shop around there are still good deals. You have to hunt. Plus I also cast lead bullets for .38 cal and .40 cal for my plinking loads and it would really hurt your feelings to tell you about $0.06 per round or $6.00 per hundred for plinking ammo than other that reloaded were on Gunbroker for $150.00 per hundred lead round nose bullets for .38 special.
