  1. Al Gore is an Idiot. I still personally think getting vaccinated is a good thing to do. But Al Gore is still an Idiot.

  3. I knew my dad had been building this rifle, but to my surprise, he came by today and gave it to me for my birthday. It is a 25-06. I haven't yet shot it. What I was wondering is whether any of you have seen a cherry rifle stock. It looks much better than I would have guessed. He made it from a piece of rough sawn lumber. It must have taken forever to inlet.

  4. I mean, it's a gun forum, right? Everyone's had a boo boo....I know there's ex military & police dudes here so come on, fess up. Who's been shot? Where, how, why & please explain to the uninitiated what it felt like. I'll go first. All of these were accidents (the last was entirely my fault & the shame hurt FAR more than the injury) First: I was 17. Recruited to the British Army long range shooting team & training for the Queens trophy at Bisley. I took a 7.62 ricochet thru my right knee. It bounced off 2 brick walls before it hit me & I honestly don't remember a thing. I heard a bang (I was working targets in the range butts) then woke up in a hospital. Wheel chair for 3 weeks, crutches for another 6, then physio for a couple of months. I remember that it felt like..... well, like I'd been freaking shot. Second was the week after I quit the physio.... my best bud & I were rabbit hunting (we're both 17...) with .22s. We were having a great day, probably had 35 bunnies in the bag. I shot a really good hare & my 'buddy' (foreshadowing...) decided it'd be funny as all get out to make its head explode, just as I'm picking it up. Well, he missed. Put a .22 short through my hand. Literally just got the all clear from the army, medical discharge & all that & my bestest best friend in the world shattered my right hand pinky knuckle, 3 metatarsal bones & my right index finger knuckle. I passed out at the impact, but came to 30 seconds later feeling like a red hot soldering iron had been shoved thru my hand. Stupid thing, the really stupid thing.... is that I didn't tell anyone for 5 days. I was more worried about getting him in trouble than anything else. My hand was black & the size of a cantaloupe when my mum took me to the hospital (I lied & told her I'd hit it on a rusty nail.) The doctors fixed my hand & dug the slug out from next to my thumb. He's just finished serving a 25 year sentence for killing 2 people back in the UK, by the way. Got out in August last year, apparently. Kinda wish I'd known what he was like in '91....... The third (yeah, I know.....) was entirely my own stupid fault. I won't go into details because, well......no. Nothing bad, nothing cagey, I'm frankly just ashamed because this was totally on me. Ar10 (not mine) with which I was very unfamiliar. I had it muzzle up in a truck & decided (because I'm a tit) that muzzle down would be safer (hahahahaaaaaa!) In my infinite wisdom, I decided to invert the rifle & this bit I don't remember. The safety was off. Not a doubt in my mind, I screwed up. 110% my own doing, not an excuse in the world is going to change that. Now...I don't know if my finger was on the trigger, in the trigger guard or not. Maybe the seat organizer of the driver I was sat behind got in there, maybe fate, God, karma....I honestly do not know. But; something hit the trigger. And the recoil made it a double tap. I, frankly, shat myself. Everyone in the vehicle shat themselves. I have never experienced a moment of shame like it & I pray I never do again. To this day, the thought of what happened & more importantly what COULD'VE happened keeps me awake. It's a feeling I cannot shake. Having been shot twice at this point (and shot AT quite a bit. Now that ####'s scary), this instance was hands down THE most terrifying. Because it was me. It was my fault. I screwed up. Royally. Nothing that occurred can be attributed to anything. Anything, but my negligence. So, I drilled 2 (TWO), 150gn .308 soft points BETWEEN MY BIG TOE & THE TOE NEXT TO THE BIG TOE I DONT KNOW WHAT IT'S CALLED DAMMIT DON'T JUDGE ME! An inch in literally 3 out of 4 directions & if have lost, at best, a toe. At worst, literally my entire f'king foot! (Srsly, not exaggerating) Best I can describe the feeling, physically, was like having an anvil dropped on my foot from about 20 feet. However. The pain IMMEDIATELY disappeared once I realized what'd happened and that it was me that'd screwed up. The physical shock, however; the realization of the situation etc.... knocked the ever living tar out of me. I cried. I panicked. I profusely apologized to everyone. I hyperventilated. I tried to make jokes because that's my default "oh....####" setting. I cried a bit more. I finally realized that the only person physically hurt was me & honestly, I might kinda oughtta think about maybe doing something about that. Took off my boot, nothing odd looking. Took off my sock: bloody, but not weirdly shaped. Looked at my hoof....... RIGHT BANG SLAP between the little piggies. I almost. Almost took up religion, sobriety & veganism at that point. There have, been zero negative effects (other than the continuing sleepless nights, guilt & shame) & the skin came back very nicely. Anyone else here as unlucky, foolish or clumsy as me? TL,DR; Robbie's been shot 3 times. It really, really f'king hurts.

  5. Hopefully people are listening to their doctors and not the media, politicians, or the Internet. My doctor told me to wait because I've had the real deal. He also told me to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine if/when I decide to participate in this ridiculously unprecedented clinical trial. What blows my mind is the staggering amount of "Vaccine Shaming" that is wrapped around this whole issue. Even if I ever do decide to get vaccinated against COVID-19, I'll probably take it to my grave as a secret. And hopefully that'll be a long time after the vaccination and from reasons completely unrelated to the vaccine. This issue isn't just politicized, it's been "socialized" to the point where an alarming percentage of people actually want the government to force their fellow citizens to undergo medical treatment. FORCE. And here we are participating in an Internet community centered upon the one Constitutional amendment that was designed to keep the government... a government... any government... from doing that sort of thing to you. Weird.

  6. Vaccine hesitancy is a known phenomenon in the black community that is based on long history of documented malefaction by government health officials. For anyone wondering why that is, I got two words for you, “Tuskegee Experiment”.

  7. There are a few good reasons for not getting it. They just don't apply to folks my age IMO. If I was worried about the long term effects of something that is not FDA approved, and was in a low risk group (like you), it would be much tougher to pull the trigger. Got nothing to do with Trump vs that idiot. Plain old cost/benefit exercise.

  8. Funny that MSM is repeating the theme that states Trump won or otherwise red states have lower vaccination rates and it must be political. However, I have discussed the vaccine with more than a few black folks whose political opinions are quite different from mine. Strangely, they are waiting on getting the shot for the same reasons I am and those reasons have nothing to do with politics. I don’t believe vaccinated vs unvaccinated necessarily corresponds to left vs right like we are being led to believe. Whatever the case, Gore’s racism claim is idiotic.

  9. While it's nothing more than luck and being a few inches this way instead of that way - I'm to be in the camp of "shot at and missed." The only way I can describe it is that it's a liberating feeling and an utterly terrifying one at exactly the same time.

  11. Well you can easily uncross that line by pointing out the glaringly obvious fact that .gov colluding with big tech to censor your personal text messages that involve you discussing hesitancy to be a guinea pig for an experimental drug can quickly become .gov colluding with big tech to censor your personal text messages discussing gun rights with your friends. Or much worse.

  14. May be the perceived overreaction to the whole thing. And when Trump was running the show, NONE of the Democrats where willing to take it, including the geezer in chief. I agree 100% with Desantis on how this whole thing should have been handled. Focus on the people that are at risk, and STOP destroying the whole economy. Now, MY media hasn't been telling me that he's an idiot. Other media has. Sure it's been driven by politics because... our politicians and media are totally unethical, and WE are stupid enough to let them do it.

  17. I would place the blame mostly on the politicization of things by the media. Though there is also the general underlying bristling at being told what to do by government officials that aren’t on their team. With regards to Op Warp Speed, had the election gone the other way, I suspect we would have seen a far more mixed bag of reactions. Like some lefties being suspicious of the “Trump vaccine” and then conservatives spouting rhetoric about getting the jab similar to what gets thrown around about folks resisting the police when there is a questionable shooting and being friendlier to the idea of vaccine mandates. Of course I’m just a dumb trucker with too much time to think. What do I know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've been trying to get video to load but it is just apparently not working yet so if you want to see the MDT ACC gun it is one being fired on the table to the left of me in the pics above.

  20. I coach/train in the 4-H Shooting Sports program. This activity starts at the 4th grade (8-9 yr.) level. In the BB program we use Daisy 499B guns. They are a single shot, muzzle loaded BB gun made specifically for 5 meter competition and are very accurate We emphasize gun safety, along with skills. The program is 4-position, prone, sitting, kneeling, and offhand. It's a competition based precision shooting activity so some kids find it too "slow" but it's excellent for those that are focused. At the 4-H camps we use .22 lr single shot rifles on a highly supervised range. They can go to camp beginning the summer after the 4th grade. We stress gun safety, proper handling, etc. We get a lot of first time shooters that have never touched a gun. No effort at developing precision shooters. We just work to provide a positive experience with a firearm and hope that they can have success hitting the paper! It's a great experience guiding a hesitant kid through their first time firing a gun. We also hold a Shooting Sports specific camp that includes several shooting sports. We plan to resume both camp experiences next summer.

  24. Took dad out on the boat Friday night, started the evening off catching a few fresh skipjack. Wound up filling a small cooler before dark. Got the rods baited up around 9:30. We fished till 12:30 before the weather turned bad. A little rain I don't mind but lightning is another story. The bite was good, lost count of how many smaller fish was caught. Dad got him a flathead which was the biggest of the night. Also went out Wednesday night on a solo trip and did good that night also. Got a decent blue that was spawned out and skinny for its length. And quit counting all the fish after the 15th one. Brought 10 of which home to put some fillets in the freezer.

  30. It’s come as a surprise to a lot of folks, but when you hear conventional wisdom on people of color getting the vaccine, you need to see the actual data. There’s a lot that many of us assumed was going to happen that largely hasn’t. I am very close to a sister congregation that is predominantly black. I was having lunch with one of their leaders back in January and he asked me how many folks in our congregation would get vaccinated. I told him roughly 100%. I posed the same question to him, and he shook his head and said it was going to be a real uphill battle. He said that he might be the only person who wasn’t in an assisted living facility to get it. Family memories of stuff like Tuskegee makes it hard. We had lunch back at the end of May, and he me told with tears in his eyes that over 60% had gotten it so far. Here in Nashville, and largely nationwide, people of color have taken advantage of the opportunity to get the vaccine at a higher rate than was expected. It was expressed to me that, “as a group, our outcomes from the disease are generally worse than other groups.” I wonder if recognition of that is driving a lot?

  31. What explains the hesitancy among the conservative population? As I recall, Operation Warp Speed implemented by the prior, infallible POTUS, fast-tracked vaccine development and distribution.
    1 point
  32. Much of the rhetoric around the vaccine is explicitly political. This has prevented many from doing an honest cost/benefit analysis around the vaccine. Political critters and media outlets of all varieties and stripes engaged in this rhetoric to the detriment of everyone.

  33. I read somewhere that only about 25% of black folks have been vaccinated. Do you you believe the other 75% are conservative?

  34. From the TN/GA/AL Training Group meeting Saturday 7/17/21 Rastoff's Challenge . The course of fire is ... 4 rounds at 3 yards 6 rounds at 5 yards 6 rounds at 7 yards 4 rounds at 10 yards All rounds must be inside the X ring for a perfect score. The X is about 2" by 3" . Breaking the line does NOT go to the higher score. No time limit. Pure accuracy test. This was the first pistol drill we shot.

  36. I shot a guy at 1000 yards once. Hit a spindle on a spotter. The bullet was deflected I believe more than once and hit the guy. He picked the bullet up off the ground at his feet and it gave him a nice burn. He brought me the spotter and the bullet. Luckily no skin was broken. I still have them both. 180 7mm @ 3050. 1830ish at 1k.

  38. You know how when you are dove hunting they say don’t shoot at low birds. There is a reason for that. A kid close to me tracked a low bird, swung and fired. He never even thought about people down the line. Took 12 gauge bird shot to my face. Dropped me to my knees but luckily he was just far enough away that the pellets didn’t break the skin. Left 11 red welts on my face and neck.

  39. I have actually started teaching the grandkids this week. Using a single shot 22cal pellet rifle. They were bored with all the “rules and functions “ but once they saw that can jump with the first hit. They were hooked. I will move them up to a single shot 22 Remington 112 when I feel they have the basics down.

  40. I taught my GS with a 10/22 at the plinking range at the range I belong to. The plinking range allows any target except glass ones, has some rough benches at a "formal" firing line, safety lights, etc. This environment allowed me to have some defined grounds as to what's safe, and what's not safe. Also covered the range rules set by the club, etc., Granted the GS had a BB gun, but had just used/shot it around his house with no damage or incidents before his first trip to the range. After his initial "shock" of the loud report of the 22lr, he proceeded to do "mag dumps" with the 10/22 so fast that "meme" could not keep up with the reloading duties. LOL He learned the rules the first time, and on later trips, he always remembered them, he always waited or asked about something if he was unsure, never bolted downrange, no muzzle sweeps, etc.

  41. My take on it that using a chronograph can be traumatic. When we are comparing cost on handloading one aspect has to be considered. That consideration is what do I want in the cartridges. Using low end bulk rounds is fine if that what you want. Sometimes it's not just a matter of money. It's what I get for the money spent. When comparing the price of loading, for example, 300 Weatherby compare to store bought cartridges. I can easily beat the $100.00 dollars a box of twenty on 375 H7H. I can load up rounds for my handguns comparable to those of the high end PD rounds. I'm getting ready to load some 257 Roberts with Barnes bullets. How long do you thing I'd have to wait at the Big Box for those rounds to show up? What about my 338 Federal rounds loaded with Swift bullets? It's not all about money.

  42. I plan to use the SCCY for a carry gun. The little gun runs very well on CCI small pistol primers. However, there are "light strikes" with CCI small pistol magnum primers. The gun has not been problematic with conventionally loaded cartridges. I do not own another 9mm to experiment. I shoot many, many rounds of 38 Special in S&W revolvers loaded with small pistol magnum primers with zero problems. I will not carry the SCCY until this madness settles down and we have a normal selection of components. People have been paying more for 9mm factory rounds per box than I paid for the SCCY. It's a nutball world right now.

  43. The Charger is a fun gun to shoot. It's hard to pick between the two of them for me on range days. You might like the standard PC9 more if you're running the lighter gr 9mm ammo. You can push some higher velocity out of the longer barrel. Rounds like these 68 GR from Underwood https://www.underwoodammo.com/9mm-luger-p-65-grain-xtreme-defender.html They make the full sized PC Carbine more fun. Mine has been a champ when it comes to feeding reloads. Hot 90 gr JHP have been fun to shoot out of the thing.

  46. The hard part is convincing yourself that no time limit means no time limit. Go slow, relax between shots, take a couple deep breaths. You don't have to hit the x ring 20 times in a row, you have to hit the x ring once, 20 times.

  48. So I admit to being pretty hot headed in my younger days. I used to say and do stuff that I knew would blow up the situation. I have since learned to ignore a lot of idiots in the world. Makes me happier and removes their validation. When being in any type of "altercation", your actions are all you can control. I think one misstep, like in another recent thread, is your response. Probably seemed appropriate at the time but it just antagonized him and moved the situation along. Remember in lots of cases it might end up being your word against his and maybe he is a better storyteller than you. Especially when you are carrying, you have to remember that the first rule should be to avoid situation where you need to draw your weapon. What if he had been carrying his gun and immediately opened fire when he saw yours. From your seated position, he might have the upper hand. Now you were the one that pulled a gun and he responded in fear for his life. Or at least that is what he will say after he tosses the tire iron back in his trunk. Whether you can tell your side might simply come down to how good his aim is. I am leaving mine here just because. I guess I missed reading @GlockSpock's response. Sorry
