I am going to try to be polite but sooner or later it becomes important to speak truth and crush falsehoods, so if I start teetering there you're just going to have to forgive me or accept that my intentions are pure. That said, this screams "I have never really tried to carry a gun with an optic IWB or AIWB in a quality holster and supported by a quality gun belt, so I am going to make an assumption and pass it off as an anecdotal bit of wisdom." You're wrong. Sorry. Just wrong. Unless you somehow manage to carry your handgun horizontally in your belt with the slide parallel to the ground, there is no way that a modern dot optic, mounted to the slide and not stacked on a dovetail mount or some other oddball fixture, riding along the same plane as the slide is going to cause you discomfort. I almost doubt you'll even feel it. I sure don't and I am not some Greek Adonis with washboard abs and 0% body fat either. I like tacos. Parts of me push AGAINST a holster and gun. I never, ever feel the optic and it's never, ever snagged on anything during a draw. People also said that about the Model-T. People with pacemakers are truly #### out of luck then.4 points

Hell, just find the closest Tops BBQ (which on the low end of what is available locally) to the interstate and you’ll have better than what is available in the rest of the state. Their burgers are fantastic as well.4 points

I am perhaps a little shocked that there is not already a thread about Walther's new PDP handgun, but at the same time I am also not entirely surprised as it generally feels like the whole community of gun owners-at-large is holding its collective breath during these first 60 days of the Biden Occupation. That being said, let's get on to talking about a new blaster! https://waltherarms.com/pdp/ The Walther PDP (Performance Duty Pistol) is positioned to be the successor to the Walther PPQ series. It is Walther's new polymer frame, striker fired, 9mm pistol with a steel slide available in 4-inch and 4.5-inch lengths (a 5-inch is rumored to be coming). The slide uses Glock pattern front and rear sights, features a beveled leading edge for easier re-holstering, raised Super Terrain™ front cocking serrations, and comes standard as an optics-ready platform. The optics-ready aspects of the PDP are a centered around a deeply recessed mounting position that accepts a variety of Make/Model-Specific mounting plates that Walther partnered with C&H Precision Weapons (aka CHPWS) to produce. CHPWS is renowned for manufacturing rugged and reliable metal mounting plates that address weak spots of OEM plates from companies like Glock and Smith & Wesson, and plates that adapt optics to platforms that were otherwise incompatible with them such as Sig Sauer, H&K, CZ and Staccato. This decision by Walther is a damned good one, in my opinion, and will result in a lot of options for PDP owners moving forward. One last note about the optics-ready nature of this gun is that the mounting pocket is so deeply recessed that an Trijicon RMR mounted to the gun provides a Lower 1/3 co-witness with standard height Glock sights. Taller sights would only be needed if your particular optic and mounting plate combination dictate it. Most mass-produced optics ready guns require taller sights for co-witnessing. The only other one that I am aware of that doesn't is the Shadow Systems MR and DR family, and they lack the modularity of a mounting plate system. The frame of the PDP uses a new Performance Duty Texture on the grip's side panels and modular back strap, paired with more traditional grooves on the front strap. The Performance Duty Texture is geodesic in appearance and seems that it would offer good traction without being overly rough. LAV does a good overview of the grip texture and back strap features here: The PDP also continues the tradition of Walther providing what is arguably one of the best triggers in a polymer, striker-fired handgun. The community has long raved about the excellent trigger in the PPQ series and the PDP thankfully does not divert away from a proven recipe. The PDP also sticks with the PPQ M2's preference of a standard button-style mag release rather than going back to the original PPQ's paddle style. As someone who has owned several and still owns one HK pistol with a paddle release, I can say that this does not make me angry in the least. The paddle, while interesting, is weird in comparison to all of the other guns I've ever used and owned that use a button release. I will forever instinctively move my thumb toward where the mag release button should be on any gun that has paddles. So I am very thankful that the PDP does not have them and does have the button style release. Your opinions and preferences might vary. And if they do... you're weird and wrong. Once again here's LAV to explain to you why this trigger is pretty awesome and why you weirdos should try to conform a little more. Last but certainly not least, the pricing on the PDP seems like it should be reasonable once the initial hype dies down. The retail industry has taken note of how quickly the first production runs are selling out, and they are doing what retailers are often wont to do: They are putting them on GunBroker and letting people pay a premium to be among the first to own one. Good retailers are keeping them in store and selling them at MSRP. I love you good retailers who do this. The GunBroker turds can count on me remembering who they were a year from now when gun sales are hurting. If you want one and don't want to pay a $50 - 150 premium, wait. The supply chain will catch up. You won't have to wait forever. DO YOU HAVE ONE? Let us know what you think about it! I will pick one up sooner or later.3 points

Dry rub is the way. I’ll take it every time over the ketchup on burnt beef they call BBQ in KC.3 points

@MacGyvercalled it. He knows my picks. (Central is really good, but @Garufa is right. Go to the original on Central.) I’ll throw another one in there, Cozy Corner BBQ on N. Parkway it’s over by St. Jude. Get the Cornish Hens. They’re amazing. If you’re feeling catfish, go to Soulfish. If you want Mexican, Las Delicias is my pick. If you want some friend chicken, Gus’s Fried Chicken either downtown or on Mendenhall. Only those two as you won’t be anywhere near the original out in Mason. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are lots of great little cafes in midtown. Just pick any one and give it go. If you just want some good bar style sandwiches, burgers and such, Young Avenue Deli. Their cheese fries are the best. Its amazing how I didn’t get fat until after I left Memphis.3 points

I’m going to give you a different recommendation than @Chucktshoeson barbecue - but Central BBQ is my favorite. The one downtown by the Lorraine Motel. He’s gonna tell you Bar-b-cue Shop or Interstate and those are pretty good too.3 points

I just got back from getting my first shot. It went much better than I expected. The on-line sign up was much better than my try last week. I got an appointment in just a few minutes. Arrived at the site and Deputies were directing traffic on the main road. They have a bit of a maze laid out in the parking lot both coming in and going out. 1st stop: check appointment and give you paperwork. 2nd stop is a large tent big enough for two lanes of traffic. They let six vehicles in each lane enter at a time. 12 total in the tent. Here they take paperwork and give you your shot. Nobody moves until all vehicles are taken care of. Then all cars leave at the same time. 3rd stop: a 10 minute hold on the way out to make sure you don't have a reaction. Move to 4th stop: Another 10 minute hold and then you're done. The whole process took about 35-40 minutes. Most of it is just waiting to make sure you're ok with the vaccine and no bad reactions. I guess the state getting involved and turning over the vaccinations to Memphis was a good thing. Just a few weeks ago we were hearing horror stories of hours in line and not enough vaccine. Looks like its pretty squared away now.3 points

It’s a good thing you’ll never find that foul abhorrence of “white sauce” in Memphis. Proper people do not slather mayonnaise on BBQ. It’s why Alabama is just wrong.2 points

Gus’s ain’t like Nashville hot chicken, but it ain’t supposed to be. I definitely prefer one over the other. Kinda sounds like you would be well served dropping into midtown and finding a random cafe.2 points

What do you think you’d want to eat? If you want BBQ, I got an answer for that. If you want catfish, I got an answer for that. You want other random food, I got answers for that. Folks can say what they want about Memphis, but we got the best food in the state.2 points

The FEGs are great guns. One cautionary note if you get one -- most but not all of the parts will interchange with the Browning or FN. If you decide to replace parts in yours, check first. Cheers, Whisper2 points

I've had several, and the FN's I've had were absolutely beautiful. So beautiful I felt guilty just handling them. They are still on this board... somewhere ! I started my gun journey with an FEG PJK-9hp. I let that one get away because I didn't know what it was. Found another one years ago and it's a keeper. Love these things. It's a shooter!2 points

Heres my HP lineage pistols. A FEG made FN stamped impostor that I put a real FN barrel in (shoots better). The DA Arcus has HP DNA buried in a bit more steel covering. If I find some time, I may whittle a bunch of that metal off to mimic what Gf54 has there in that Detective. Finally bought a pair of Mec Gar 15 round mags for these pop guns. You need 2 men and a boy to fit #15 in em but they will run them out with no problem. Back when I first got my carry permit at the legal 21 age, I bought a Browning HP from Numrich Arms where I worked across the street at Auto Ordnance. Carried that thing everywhere I went.... One night I was watching Cher dancing around on TV while I was leading her with my HP sights, Just as she stopped moving around, I dropped the hammer on her, thinking i had ejected the round earlier......Bang goes the HP and Cher was gone! Those 9mm FMJ rounds dont go threw an old style TV, I can tell you that for sure! That was one of 3 times a round got away from me back when I was young, dump and full of.... you know... LOL. Sold that HP to a buddy of mine when he wanted it for the PD job he had. The Feg was not polished very well when it was parkerized but it satisfies the HP desires as far as shooting holes in things.....2 points

Moved to Knoxville area a few months ago. Looking forward to getting out and trying a few ranges. Recommendations welcome, prefer outdoor 100yd+ rifle or trap/sleet. Coming from CA and enjoying the freedom TN offers. Looking forward to to magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.2 points

I understand your concerns, but I think the permit system is a false sense of security. Lets face it, any idiot can pass the HCP class. Shoot, when I took mine we graded our own papers, and as long as nobody got shot at the range you passed that part. I do think that when a cop runs your license or sees your HCP and sees that you are a HCP holder it eases their mind a little, because it tells them right away that you at least can pass a background check.1 point

The longer I live, the more I truly appreciate eating regional variants - and seeing how stuff has migrated with people. We’ve all got our preferences I suppose. I love some Carolina mustard sauce. Growing up in Georgia, I’ll take anything smoked over pecan wood. Heck, I’ve even come to appreciate Texas and the fact while you’d be hard pressed to find a proper pork sandwich in the state - they do a pretty good brisket. I’m just thankful a thread on Memphis barbecue has made it this far without anyone calling those chargrilled things at the Rendezvous barbecue.1 point

I gotta say, this thread has gone much more calmly than one might have expected. You get fans of BBQ from KC, Bama, and Memphis going in on it and you’ll normally find as heated of a debate as any found in the now departed politics section.1 point

One note of caution when buying a P35. The safety to seer contact point is very small and the fact that the safety lever is not an easy "snap to on" motion due to its small size, The factory assemblers had a tendency to cut more rather than less off the safety side of that to seer contact so as to not have a friction fit of the safety to seer to hammer. A tiny bit of friction fit could make the gun come back with the complaint the safety is to hard to engauged. So, you are likely to find a number of guns where if you put the safety on, and pull on the trigger, the trigger will move the seer a tiny bit. To check for this "over cut", you simply put the safety on and put pressure against the back of the cocked hammer while you then pull on the trigger. Then let up on the trigger while still pushing the hammer forward. then, stop the forward pressure and pull the hammer back. If you hear the seer reset to full cock position, you have seer creep because the safety is over cut. I'v fixed a few of these by putting a small dab of weld on that safety cut area and then hand file the weld down to the very slightest friction fit when moving the safety to on. Mind you, there is not a hell of alot of seer to hammer full cock notch to begin with, so any seer movement forward while the safety is engauged is certainly not an optimal condition on a single action auto that many think condition 1 is a safe carry on a BHP. I personaly would much rather carry a loaded chamber with half cock notch engauged rather than on a over cut safety. Half cock notch carry on this particular design is rather under rated to begin with IMO. The extended safety I put on my FEG is a casting unit and needed alot of fitting to work perfectly. Now I wouldn't hesitate to carry it in condition 1. It has a clean medium pressure "snap" on and off.1 point

Wow, I like my 9.5" Single Six but people give me a hard time, can't imagine what they would say with a 16" barrel. I bought mine because a friend has one and I always liked it. I gave him a hard time about being a better shot than me because he was closer to the target.1 point

Wonderful pistols! My favorite 9mm. Browning discontinued the Hi-Power a couple of years ago. Since then prices have gone up considerably. An average condition pistol now costs in the $1200+ range. You can probably find a .40 cal a good bit cheaper as they aren't near as popular. Honestly, I don't like the .40 and wouldn't have one. Along with the 1911, the Hi-Power is one of the most copied pistols in the world. There are lots of excellent clones out there. FEG, , FM, Kareem, Israel, plus several more I can't remember have made them. I've never heard of a truly bad clone. Most of the real differences are in the finish. You can find these at much better prices, but even they are going up. As for the Browning versions: The pre-war and WW II pistols are extremely sought after by collectors and very expensive. Likewise the "T" series serial numbers are collectible and pricey. For a real Browning, your best bet will be the MK III version which was the last. I have one of these and love it. I currently have 3 versions of the Hi-Power and love them all. Top: Browning MK III I bought new in the early 90s. Middle: FEG clone. Just as good as the real thing. Just not quite so pretty. Bottom: FM Detective Model. This one is the Commander sized version of the HP with a 1" shorter slide and barrel. These are scarce and prices are rising dramatically. I just lucked into this one.1 point

A supply disruption is very hard to handle. I had to work through one when we lost the primary plant that supplied one of our feedstocks due to an explosion. The material was unique and was sole sourced. We were ethical and allocated available finished goods based on past usage, refused new customers, etc. Large customers that historically bought by truckload(s) had to unload one pallet then watch the truck drive away to the next customer with product they both desperately needed to serve their customers. Bottom line. We saved the company but our customers were forced to find other options to continue their businesses. Our most profitable product line was destroyed by loss of customer confidence and their need to serve their customers. In a free market, if there's enough demand for reloading supplies and the existing manufacturers are not able to fill the "vacuum", new sources will develop. That's the basis of "business", identify an unserved need and find a way to fill it. It will take time but this will happen. Unfortunately, we do not live in a true free market. Politics will have a major influence on what ultimately happens.1 point

Been re reading the posts here... David revealed an important gem here: "... A dot shooter {should focus ) Their eyes crisply on the target and the dot simply appears on the target as they bring the gun to bear, using proprioception to get it there. It's the exact same aiming technique that we humans have been using since we picked up a sharp stick [spear] and threw it at another human or an animal. Spears don't come with iron sights. We look at the target, not at the spear, and we lob that sucker with accuracy. ..." Ive found this to be true shootin the old iron pistolas n shotguns. If ya shoot with both eyes open, looking at the target, simply bring the pistola to the target, and the sights appear. This, indeed, may be the key to the red dot shooting technique... period... This works with all firearms aimed at eye level. The red dot has its clear advantage here, as it projects onto the target.. Im likin this red dot thing more n more... Thanks for all the insight... Please keep talkin... learnin leroy, the red dot toddler...1 point

I have not read the current bill to pass constitutional carry in Tennessee so I am not familiar with what if any stipulations there will be. I believe it the right that we all have under 2A to keep and bear arms. However, I do take a little personal comfort (maybe rightly, maybe ignorantly) that if there are folks around me who are carrying, they have had at least a some instruction in the use of a handgun and at least have been introduced to the laws regarding the legal use of said firearm to defend themselves or others. As responsible gun owners, we all understand that it is incumbent on us to train, learn, and be safe. Unfortunately there are A LOT of irresponsible people out there. With constitutional carry, any yahoo who can legally own a handgun, can carry said handgun even if they have never held one before, shot one before, or have any knowledge or understanding of the laws and regulations pertaining to its use. I think about the lady who took it upon herself to shoot at a fleeing shoplifter, hitting the store employee instead. I don’t know the laws in the state in which that occurred, but in Tennessee she committed several felonies. I’m not saying a 60min online class to get your CCP or an 8 hour class to get your ECP makes us safe. But at least it opens the door to the knowledge needed to carry a handgun responsibly.1 point

Correct. It's just a question of availability. LOL! That's the core issue, isn't it? But what I mean to say is that any one of us, just like Snaveba says(well...paraphrasing anyway), we all buy when it's available to us. Online or store. If it's there...we buy. Individuals buying may, and does, add to shortages in many cases. But that shortage is individual availability/shortage. Now combine that availability/shortage with the number of people like us who purchase, governmental contracts like the Fema deals a few years ago, military and foreign sales, AND the possible unknow number of new firearms buys who want the same things we do (Readily available ammo and some to have at home.), things really begin to get dicey. I've read in many news blurbs and online headline articles, that the number of new/first time firearms buyers has not only increased dramatically every month for the last 2 years, but projects 3 million plus new purchases. And that doesn't include sales made FTF without BATFE recording.1 point

Understood but you will continue to make this situation worse by constantly buying every box you spot. The politicians haven't created the ammo shortage, we have. All of this panic buying has played out before and made things a nightmare when it wasn't even necessary.1 point

I don’t think many folks on the THO are buying up the $1.00/round or more ammo off gunbroker. And when you can only get 2-3 boxes of 50 from Academy Sports, it takes a few trips to get any quantity.1 point

As always, this is NOT LEGAL ADVICE!! The confusion typically comes from the fact that there is no "hard and fast rule" here. Someone who forcibly enters and has no legal right to be there creates a presumption that you (the rightful occupant) are under a reasonable fear of death or grave bodily harm. That presumption can be overcome by the facts, though. For example, an intruder forcibly enters, is completely naked, and falls asleep on the couch. You walk into the room some time later and find him there. The fact that the intruder meets that presumption definition does not give the occupant the right to shoot him. Under those circumstances, the presumption is overcome by the facts. It would not be reasonable to be in fear at that point. Yes, if you change the facts or add facts, that could change the result. But that's the point. The facts will dictate what is allowable as self-defense. The classic example of a self-defense presumption is you hear glass break in the middle of the night. You get up, see a dark figure and fire at that figure. Under those circumstances, the shooter is presumed to have been in reasonable fear. The shooter would not have to prove that fear was reasonable at trial. If the prosecution can prove that the fear wasn't reasonable, the presumption is overcome and a conviction is possible (maybe even likely). The only thing the self-defense presumption does is change who has the burden of proof at trial. In either case, the facts matter. So, change the facts even slightly, you can get a different answer. As a general matter, it still comes down to reasonableness. If someone forcibly enters the house but you have any reason NOT to be in reasonable fear, don't shoot. Just because a person is in your house is not a get out of jail free card.1 point

Want to make some scratch? Cheese? Coin? Loot? Dollar bills? Ever fancy yourself a bounty hunter? :) Websites like TGO need advertisers to stay afloat, let alone grow bigger and better and make it possible to do cooler things. To date we've been fortunate -- blessed even -- to have our advertisers find us. We've never had to go hunting for them, and honestly I've never really wanted to. I just don't like selling. I'm not a "sales guy" and I hate cold-calling. But recently I had a member approach me with a prospective advertiser and asked if I'd hook them up. So I did. And I also felt like I owed that member something in return... so I did something for that person too. Which brought to mind an idea: Pretty much everyone here has their list of favorite shops to do business with. But how many of those favorite shops support your favorite local forum by advertising with us? All of them? Some of them? None of them? Could you maybe help us by convincing them to sign on with us? Because if you can, and they tell me that YOU are the reason they signed on as an advertiser, I'll gladly kick a commission payment your way. :) So, what's the motivation? I'll make no bones about this: I'd like to eventually quit working for the man Monday - Friday and make TGO something of a full time job. I'd love nothing more than to work on new features, new content, videos, blogs, reviews, etc. all for the TGO community. But in order for that to happen, we need more advertisers and I'd be glad to share some of our increased success with anyone who helps get us there. If you are instrumental in helping bring a new advertiser on board, I owe you a debt of gratitude and I'd like to put some money back in your pocket to say thanks. Let's talk! For details, contact me privately.1 point
