  1. Went to an estate sale yesterday and picked up this Stoeger Luger .22, with an aluminum frame. I think it’s one of the best examples of one that I’ve seen. Really a bit surprised by the size and heft. It’s very close to the only Luger P08 that I’ve ever fired! Hopefully I’ll get to shot it tomorrow.

  2. I always love these threads. You have someone from out of state asking about shooting on their own property outside the city limits (usually from a commie state). They are invariably met with confusion as everyone from here is basically like “why couldn’t you? It’s your property.”

  3. Welcome. The very best way to keep your neighbors happy is to invite them to come and shoot with you.

  4. IMHO the state doesn’t need to be involved; that would simply end with banning discharging a firearm anywhere other than rural areas. However, cities, towns and counties should publish their firearms laws. Hawkins County may have done that, but they aren’t making it easy to find.

  5. Gun owners are the reason. It’s really that simple. They are in fact an hysterical bunch when it comes to components...and ammo availability. The record guns sales we’ve seen in the last 6 months has nothing to do with the availability of reloading components. Most new gun owners don’t know jack about ammo, much less making their own.

  6. I’m back from vacation and with recent events I thought it might be useful for us to do a team tactics day sooner rather than later. And with the current ammo situation this one will be very low on round count and very high on tactics. And since this is very short notice Im pricing this a lot lower than what fair market value for this kind of class would be . And please feel free to contact me if u want to attend but are a little short on cash right now. I’d rather have u in class and pay me a little later if you have to , than have you miss class just because you are a little short on cash right now . If you have not figured it out yet I’m more interested in developing your skills and helping keep you safe than getting rich quickly. We will look at safely moving and communicating and dealing with some common tactical problems like clearing corners and doorways, moving through an unsecured or contested area, and getting out of a vehicle and using it for cover and concealment. Think you and your homie , family member, etc being forced to bail out and get from a dangerous point A to a safer point B . Ammo count will be approximately 60 rifle (or PIstol Caliber Carbine) and 75 pistol rounds. You can certainly bring more (and shoot more ) but mag dumps are not really the idea here. Think in terms of how much you will really likely carry with you and how much ammo you will use. Rifle rounds tend to be pretty efficient if you hit what you aim at. Kyle Rittenhouse killed 2 convicted felons and wounded a third with less than 10 rounds. And the typical battle load in WWII for the Garand armed soldier was only 80 rounds. So the pertinent info is as follows..... Subject: Civilian Team Tactics for Modern Times Date : September 19th 2020 Location: Hiawassi Land Company Lake Rocky Face GA. Please contact me if you need directions. Time : 9AM- 3PM Eastern Time Price : $100 cash or check at class. You can also pay by PayPal ( cruelhandluke2000@yahoo.com) What to bring: Rifle (or PCC ) and at least 2 mags and 60 rounds for it , pistol and at least 2 mags and 75 rounds for it. Bring as many mags as you want and as much gear and ammo as you want to carry. If you want to run this class with chest rig and armor then that is fine. If you want to run it in CCW street clothes and just a rifle with spare mag in your pocket that is fine too. Up to you. This material is not gear dependent. Bring something to write with and note taking material. You may want to draw diagrams. Hope to see you in TWO weeks !

  7. Hi guys & gals. I am by no means an authority on this, and almost missed this. The August 1895 Winchester catalog #55 seems to be the first time the .30WCF was mentioned. WCF standing for Winchester Center Fire, AKA 30-30. This was first debuted in the model 1894 Winchester. John Marlin adapted his model 1893 to shoot this new cartridge and it seems his was the first time it was referred to as the 30-30. The inaugural factory loads were 160 gr. bullet at about 1900 fps. Just thought as much as the 30-30 has done for hunting, we should all be reminded. The 30-30 has probably killed some of all of North America's game including Bison, large bears, elk and is best suited for whitetail deer.

  13. Finally got to my mailbox to pick mine up. The knife is light, and very handy. The sheath is crap, but era correct. I’m quite happy with it. I’m probably gonna have a kydex sheath made for it that’ll mate up to my plate carrier.

  15. What kind/size dog are you partial to? I know sometimes that’s hard to pin down. After I had to put my Doberman, Harley, down and I decided it was time to have family member, I wanted something smaller that would be easier to take on trips. However….I ended up with another Doberman; Max. Luckily, my BIL lives here and “Uncle Ronnie” comes and stays at my house with Max while I’m gone. That may be why Max is a terrorist; but I’m not absolutely sure on that. I wouldn’t rule out checking with breeders either. Sometimes they have pups that aren’t perfect and they let them go to good homes. I suspect you will find a new companion soon.

  17. Hi Dave and thank you for the links and yes I have checked into both facilities. The top one is closed as the owner passed away and they are sending everyone to Smith County Humane site. I have glanced through that one but going to try it again. I have not been able to get the dog picture section open yet but will keep trying. I have friends and family with their ears to the ground to see if they can hear of anyone that might have a female mutt about Darby's size and not to old. I did have one facility that had a dog they were hoping I would adopt and I really gave it some serious thought. The things that I had to think of was the dog was already 8 years old and had a thyroid issue and will have to be on medicine for the rest of her life. The medicine was affordable but I finally decided against her because I can't deal with possibly becoming attached to a dog that already has underlying issues and most likely a ticking timebomb. They listed that her problem was not life threatening as long as she got her medication but I went and researched what other things it could cause and what they didn't post in her description was the 9 other side effects that could likely result from her problem. Again thank you for the links as never know when someone will send me the link of my new companion!!

  19. I used to work in Rogersville and lived in Hawkins County. My memory is the laws are similar to most other places in TN... you can't shoot within the city limits, you can in the county as long as you've got a good backstop. Hawkins County isn't quite as... cosmopolitan as the more metro areas. Its beautiful and id still be there if I didnt have to move for work.

  24. Rab, it boils down to people that were not prepared, as in they didn't have the components at their house to load what they were planning on shooting in the next 6 months. I haven't purchased any primers, powder, bullets since about 2014 or so. Just picked a box of spp off the shelf dated 2-2012. If you are going to shoot with any regularity, you need to have either the factory made ammo or the components to load your own. It is that simple. We gun owners are sometimes our worst enemy. It's like this, something happens to trigger a rush of the stores, we may be sitting on thousands of loaded rounds or thousands of primers, but we go Hey go buy some more _______. It has been especially bad this time. I heard if President Trump wins it will be next spring before you start seeing stock on the shelves and next fall before the prices start to drop. If Biden wins, start stockpiling ball bearings to shoot in a slingshot!!

  25. Doug, have you checked Smith County Humane? Their web site didn't give prices, but I saw a site that said "Adoption fees vary slightly, but are usually $50-75 per pet." https://www.adoptapet.com/adoption_rescue/72487-smith-county-humane-society-buffalo-valley-smith-county-tennessee http://www.smithcountytnhumane.com/?fbclid=IwAR0TWr7xnbld8dCMxMzfgbVyjZTrAxC8iqG1U5TKnzShHUcnKmLc3-pa2ww

  26. Your opinions are always welcome and valued my friend. I have heard of that being done a few times in the past and what happened in several of the arrangements is family always wants to get involved and many times they mess it up and end up driving the person off that is offering to adopt the pet. I'm not going to get involved with family. If they really cared about the loved one they would be willing to take care of the animal for the relative. That is why when my family told me to get another companion after Darby was put down I said only if you are willing to care for her if anything should happen to me and I got commitments from them before I said I would consider it. I had done that before I got Darby and I had friends and family willing to care for her. About a week after getting Darby I suffered a heart attack and was in the hospital and rehab for 17 days and a friend of mine(Tommy's father) took great care of her and even brought her to the hospital to visit me and my rehab nurse would take me down to the parking lot to visit with her. She didn't really have much choice cause when I asked her the first time she said she would check with the doctor and I told her she could take me or I would go without her but I was going. She went and got a wheel chair to take me down with........lol

  27. Yea, I know and that is why I won't be looking there for my next furry companion. Another issue I have run into is many of the centers really want you to have a fenced yard which I don't have but we live on 6 acres of land in the country and I never had any issues with Darby wandering away. She would go out her door and do business and maybe run around some with the Bassett hound up front a few minutes if he was out and then come back inside. Never left sight of the house. I never once had to go outside and call her to come home. I had one person tell me that if my dog went out at night alone she might not be able to find her door to come back in!! I thought that was kind of stupid but I didn't say so to the person. When a dog lives inside a house they know how to come back inside. If and when I adopt another I will leash walk her till I know I can trust her and she knows how to go in and out the Doggie door and then we will walk without the leash and she will learn were she is allowed to go and what her range is before I will let her out without me. I also have people up front to keep an eye on her too. Dogs are just smarter than some people!!

  28. Well, I have began a quest to find my next furry companion and have contacted 3 different rescue centers about dogs I have seen on their web site. I have not made any commitment but I am learning that all the rescue centers I have spoke with have made it possible to adopt a human child easier than it is to adopt a dog. The place were I adopted Darby changed hands in 2019 and they have changed the entire format from what it was back then. I don't plan on giving up till I have a new friend in my home.

  30. Fair points, and even in my hypocrisy I agree personal responsibility has fallen by the wayside. But the examples you gave have direct relationships to each other. COVID-19 is an independent variable transmitting. Obesity and hypertension can absolutely lead to heart attacks in a natural progression if left unchecked or after so long- but they can't lead to COVID-19. While I'm sure there are some who died while having COVID-19 with it not exacerbating the underlining condition enough to make a difference, I'm thinking there are a lot more people who would be alive today- even if not for long and/or in bad shape- had COVID-19 never gotten out of the lab or wet market.

  31. Took no action period. When you create a void, there are 50 states that have to fill it for better or worse. Partially. For those with Chinese passports only though. There were still 50-75 flights per day coming into LA, SF, and NY from Beijing. Which has close to zero effectiveness, if any at all. His "going it alone" has mainly been to downplay the extent and seriousness of Covid since the gitgo, squelch the science of his own agencies, suggest hare-brained stuff like bleach infusion, and hold super spreader events. What has he even seriously proposed that they fight him on? He doesn't even know what's in the legislation that gets submitted, will pick out one little part to opine on at best. Hell, he didn't (and presumably still doesn't) know what "Covid 19" even stands for, suggesting there would be a "Covid 20, and so on. I would debate that stat, and also the definition of "safe" as regards all who contract it. I'd say the long term jury is still out for all the folks who have kicked it with "minor symptoms" too. Seeing 190, 000 deaths (just so far and perhaps only half the final total) as an acceptable loss for more coin in the pocket is a pretty harsh judgement, sounds like the Obama "death panels" railed against so fiercely from the right re the ACA. Yep, it is. Since he has denied any responsibility for the whole shebang (in his own words), and with no national guidelines except the ones from his own health agencies that he denigrates, he has simply created a void that gets filled in 50 different ways and with hundreds of subsets therein, often with just as crackpot "solutions" as his own, both from the left and the right. This country was transformed forever in so many ways starting overnight after 9/11, And that was over a loss of 3,000 folks. We've been losing over 1,000 per DAY for months. With absolutely no cohesive federal plan beyond drink bleach, open everything up, and we'll have a vaccine next week Since the majority of those deaths have been seniors, it really shows the priorities regarding the (previous) "every life is sacred" part of the GOP platform. But of course, there really isn't a GOP anymore -- it was telling that for the first time, there wasn't even a written platform during the RNC, appropriate since the party has abandoned any semblance of fidelity to at least half it's former tenets. It's simply TrumpVille, follow whatever whim the psycho goes with. Btw, these ignored seniors vote in the highest percentage of any age group. - OS

  32. The CDC also keeps up with overall death counts, and the Covid era shows an uncharacteristic uptick that is actually greater than the generally reported total that has no apparent explanation other than Covid. Indeed, the Covid attributions may be well under counted, due to all the folks who died while not under medical care and received no autopsy, which is pretty common in rural communities and small towns. Ya know, there's every indication that Covid deaths will at least equal the total US military deaths during WWII. And just think, we here at home have had few of the hardships the general population suffered during that. No rationing, hard work stints in munitions factories, etc. All we really needed to do is adhere to a few reasonable science based defenses. But unlike during WWII, there's no national will to do that and that starts at the top. Even the most severe part of our national sacrifice, loss of income, could have been ameliorated by a concerted federal response. There has only been irrational raving, blame chasing, mis/dis information, and token legislation/orders. DJT has been Covid's best friend, and all only because of his perception of what's best for him. We don't need herd immunity, we need herd intelligence, even though there's none at the top to nurture it. - OS

  33. Long and short of it, subcompact pistol and short range rifle drills. Because of the nature of this class, I was able to shoot a bit more than usual, which was a bonus since I always carry a sub sub compact, a Kimber Micro .380 The good news, I have a great Kimber and could keep it running if I have to. Pleased with my performance, especially since I started a few drills weak side from the holster. I need more practice, it is more critical for pad placement and trigger press as it is extremely easy to push off target. Shot my M1 carbine, no malfunctions. Mine is ammo sensitive, runs great with Fiocchi. The no malfunctions (today) has made me finally decide to rotate it to under-the-bed status. When it does fail to eject, it takes a bunch of time to clear, with my 9mm PCC, a tap rack should cure most of my ills. 4 students with revolvers. Fun to watch because of previous personal experience. My best advice, carry two and speed loaders vs. speed strips. I also spied a single stack Glock, P365 and a NAA .32 Other than ARs, we did have a Keltec Sub2000 which had no (observed by me) issues. Finally figured out how to manage the heat and humidity, jump in the vehicle and crank the AC from time to time. I hope you will consider training with us!

  34. The only submachine gun actually used in WW1. Fortunately for the Allies, it was too little, too late to make a difference. Made to use the Luger snail-drum magazines. Those mags are fragile, complicated, and the couple of times i've loaded one it took me about five minutes using the loading tool. Still a seriously cool looking weapon!
