You list a gun in the classifieds here and the first person to respond has over ten positive feedback ratings and zero negative. I realized this yesterday. I posted a pistol for sale. Sure enough, the first respondant had 12 positive feedbacks. I knew right away this was going to be easy to close the deal. Every now and again I list something on Craigslist, knowing that actually finding a buyer who will show up with money on time is about a 50% chance. These thoughts came to me yesterday and it seemed appropriate to make them public. Thanks TGO.12 points

They asked me if I own guns. I said yes. They asked if I had a safe for them. I said yes. That was the end of it for me. They never asked again or brought it up. Our house has been closed for a few years now. We adopted 3 out of foster care and had a bio child so we are done. LOL3 points

I built a new 1900 sq ft house two years ago. Builder figured it at $250,000. Ended up costing $310,000. I would have been in way too much but for the fact it was on the lake and the lot has appreciated enough to make up for what I lost on the house. I love the house but if I were doing it over, I would have sold the lot and bought an existing home on the lake. Building is a losing proposition.3 points

I think they want to make a mess of the election so they can paint Trump's next 4 years with "He's an illegitimate president" and perform investigation, after investigation, etc.3 points

Decided I'd take out the Ruger .22lr this evening, like usual 20min at the spot and this was the first to show. Put that 40gr solid through the ear and he took a dirt nap. Its always nice to change it up every once in awhile. But for under 50 yards a .22 will do the job with the right shot placement.2 points

I haven’t owned one but when I think of budget bolt action, Savage comes up first. And now the Ruger American rifles seem to be a good value.2 points

I work for a local community bank and am seeing the same lumber shortages and price increases. A lot of homes are coming back short on the appraisal. Normally a home will get close to the build price (within reason) because they factor in comps along with the fact that someone (you) are willing to pay for the house as long as the builder is quoting a reasonable price per sq foot. Lately I’ve seen several that have not come close to the build price due to the increase in building material and the fact that the market or comps haven’t absorbed those prices yet. As others have said, it’s not the best time in the world to build.2 points

The Cali bashing always cracks me up. We need @MacGyver to remind everyone they are the worlds 4th largest economy and grow a huge amount of our produce. If they go down, I cannot imagine it would be good for the rest of us. Also, CA has a ton of Conservatives. 4.5 million voted for Trump in 2016. There are a lot of good people in the state and Fox news only shows the most bizarre, otherwise it wouldn't be news.2 points

I used to be an electrician working on custom homes. The main reason it costs more is you will pick out materials that will last 20-50 years where as “builder grade” materials that go into “spec homes” are basically as cheap as you can get and it still look good to sell. Example, 15-25 year shingles instead of 45-50 year ones, cheapest hardwood that’s still hardwood instead of what you really want, off the shelf cabinets for $5-10k vs $40-50k+ for full custom cabinets, cheap carpet that looks 20 years old in 3 years, vinyl flooring instead of tile in laundry room, the most basic ceramic tile in bathrooms. List goes on. 9 ft ceilings instead of 8 ft cost difference is more than you think, even more for 10 ft ceilings plus cathedral ceilings in great room, 12 ft in dining, trey ceiling in master bedroom. Having everything laid out exactly how you want is worth a lot for quality of life, instead of you conforming to the house you found. Building a custom home is NOT worth it if you won’t stay there 10-15+ years. If you have a career where there is a likelihood you may have to relocate, don’t do it, you will lose money. You won’t spend $500k on a $350k house, it will appraise for what you have in it unless you do something crazy. You’ll spend $500k on a house that to the uninformed looks just like the $350k house next door or down the road, but it’s built better with higher quality materials and finishes. And it’s your dream home. Might sound dumb/crazy, but I got a lot of enjoyment helping people realize/achieve their dream home.2 points

While on the road in Alabama, I stopped in at Hoover Tactical... I had just started my research into the world of semi auto .308 rifles, so was just looking. Ended up with walking out with an HK91 When I saw it, I assumed it was a PTR91 or Century C308; both of which I've handled at Bud's and wasn't a fan. Salesman says, "it's a real one." "A real one what?" "Not a clone or kit, it's nice, here, check it out." I agonized over the decision and justified through, "they ain't making them anymore, they are desirable, it should appreciate, and I know a guy who would probably sell one of his damaged kidneys if I had to sell in a pinch." It's LNIB, except for some marring around the election port. Round count has to be low, there is still finish on the tip of the firing pin and breech face shows no wear. There is little noticeable wear on the metal on metal bits that slide. Came with the test fire docs, dated 10 Nov 1980, unused cleaning kit, manual, shell deflector (? - it's the part in the pic below the stock) sling and 6 mags. Spent way more than I had budgeted, I thought a Springfield M1A variant was iny future. I think I need a bipod.1 point

One thing I have learned from having stuff done for the house AND having worked for a general contractor is that you need to be ultra specific on all details IN WRITING. Stuff like I said I wanted all screws in the deck we built... but I didn't get it in writing, so I ended up with 1/3 screws and 2/3 nails. Do you want the tile in the entry way the same height as the laminate in the living room? Get it in writing or they will take the cheapest and easiest way out. If it is not in writing, some builders will change order (extra fee for changes) you to death on every little thing. A buddy just finished a house, but he is a structural engineer with a couple decades experience working with subcontractors. He even drafted the plans. He still had a rough time getting it done how he wanted.1 point

Look for a used Savage 110 with a laminate stock and accutrigger, then make sure the barrel is floated. I'm not totally positive that one is available in .30-06 with laminate, but I'd rule that out before looking elsewhere. Failing that, I'd pick another 110 with accutrigger.1 point

If I were to consider a new bolt action it would be a Savage. They are well known for accuracy at a nice price. Several years ago I shot someone’s else’s Savage .30-06 using my surplus Greek HXP M2 ball ammo exactly three times at 100 yards. Two of the holes were touching, the other close enough to call it well under one MOA.1 point

When ARM's start getting snapped up i'll be cashing out my stock positions your already seeing all these people advertising $0 down which is insane. Right now is literally the worst time to build ever....OSB, 2x4's, 2x6's, deck boards...almost everything has doubled or worse. My builder said his average cost to build a 400,000 house is over $30,000 more then it was last year....when good deck boards are only $3 less than TREX you know things have gotten stupid. One of my new neighbors that bought land in my subdivision said she can't find a contractor that can quote her 2800sq ft for less than $500,000 and stay in the neighborhood by laws....thats almost $100,000 higher than 2 years ago for my neck of the woods.1 point

The market is crazy now and I'm hearing about labor and material shortages on new construction. Unless I knew the builder personally, I'd be a bit nervous these days trying to get something built. As a Realtor selling existing homes It's always a race now to get a Buyer to decide quickly and put in a good solid offer before the 5 other people looking at the same home get there first. And this is little old Cookeville!! And Prices? Seems we will be catching up to Nashville or Knoxville in a couple of years if this pace keeps up. Somethings gotta give I'm thinking. Wages vs Housing becoming a problem again. When we start hearing about easy ARM loans becoming the norm again watch out!1 point

I also have an heirloom .22. My dad got a Winchester Model 67 when he was a kid. I got it when I was a kid. Its not a great gun, although it was more accurate than i was last time i shot it. I busted the stock a long time ago and go a new one on it now, but I still have the original. It'll go to one of my kids or a grandkid.1 point

A good skill to learn indeed! An excerpt from a review of the classic Apocolyptic/Dystopian novel "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart New lives are born into the clan, and they learn to navigate, not by street signs, but by waterways, bridges, and church spires. Ish aspires to preserve civilization’s learning and culture for the coming generations. But reality seeps in – first gradually, then abruptly as his bright and curious son Joey dies in a rebound epidemic. Ish turns to the surviving children and shows them how to start a fire without matches and to fashion a bow and arrow – he realizes how much more useful these skills will be to future generations than trigonometry and architecture. Later, he observes that they have tipped the arrows with hammered coins – malleable nickels being the preferred denomination.1 point

Agreed. But its going to be a mess no matter which way it goes. If Trump wins, it will be voter fraud; even though they claim there is no evidence of it happening in the past (That’s laughable). If Biden wins; same thing. Especially if a lot of states require that people go to the polls to vote. Unless something changes there are several states saying they will have mail in voting. I suspect that will cause a very long delay in determining who won. I’m tickled at the number of people that say Trump will refuse to leave office. Just as I was when the tin foil hats on the right said it about Obama. How soon we forget. Lets also not forget how many people wanted to impeach Obama because they didn’t like him. If there is a question about the election it will be decided by Congress and ultimately be answered by the SCOTUS. If that is required, I would guess they will stop everything and make that decision immediately. Then whoever they say…will be in the White House.1 point

Maybe that's how I should have put it. I have conservative family that lives in the North, and they know tons, and tons of conservatives the area. I also know some conservatives in Los Angeles and they know of tons of people that are conservative in that county, and around the rest of the state. Unfortunately they are dominated by the left, election after election.1 point

A bush hog would cure a lot of California’s fire problems. I saw a commercial recently where one of the foreign car companies pledged to plant 500,000 trees in California. Guess what’s burning there? California politicians won’t let the power companies clean their right of ways, and then sue them when a power line falls and causes a fire. Now they shut the power off during storms to prevent this. That doesn’t make them happy either. I don’t see how anybody with any sense lives there.1 point

I haven’t been in the construction business since 2010. But things haven’t changed only prices gone up. Unfortunately can’t help with the process with a general contractor (GC). To note, if you build a $250k house on a lot you paid $50k for. The home will appraise for $250k maybe just a touch more if it’s in a good neighborhood, it’s just the way it is. I don’t think it’s right, but it is how it is. Also, if you are at all interested in integrated smart home, get a guy out there around the same time you have your security system and electricians out there right after it’s framed, much easier to have everything hidden like it should be that way.1 point

With all the gun buying and hoarding going on I'd never expect to find a deal like I did. I set out looking to buy one of 2 Ruger P89's that I found at a shop. The prices on them were not good compared to the shape they were in. I know the P89 can endure lots of damage and still run fine. But these guns were priced more than what they did new and these even had rust. By the time I paid tax and background check it would cost me $428 and that's with no box and one beat up off brand magazine. So I went back home and decided to stop at my local shop. There was a new in box Beretta 92 Compact in the case. It was made in Italy and has the "IT17" Mark's on it showing it made there in Italy in year 2017. After tax and background check I got out the door for $424. I'm a sucker for the Beretta 92 series and Rugers P-Series. I couldn't believe it was there with all the gun hoarding and buying going on. Bare shelves and hardly any ammo. People houng nuts grabbing and buying anything they can yet there was this nice new Beretta for half the normal price. I swear I love how these things line the cartridge up and feed it straight into the barrel. No tilting or runing up ramps to worry with.1 point

Yep the kids of today have had too many freedoms taken away. They have helmets to ride a bike, seat belts to ride in a car, can't ride in the back of a pickup in most states, can't buy a pistol until he/she is 21 but join the Armed forces and we will furnish them a fully auto M-16, hand grenades, .50 cal, tanks you name it, but they can't legally buy a beer, a cigarette or a pistol, that is pretty screwed up if you ask me. I guess this makes me an old fart for sure!!1 point

I remember making aluminum foil boats with a friend and filling them with lighter fluid. We would stick a wood match in and light it so it would catch the fluid on fire that soaked into the stick. THEN we decided that was lame since it was so hard to get it to light. We proceeded to borrow his dad's gas can and use that instead. When we scurried away there was a skim of burning gas floating down the creek for a long ways. lol My Dad tells the story of using a pound of black powder in some old car part to make a bomb. Said it made a crater in the pasture field. Knowing Dad's childhood adventures, my Mom was always keeping an eye out to stop me. Problem with now is if some 12 year old makes an explosive of any type, they are libel to be shipped off as a terrorist.1 point

Yea a friend and I were into making black powder and our own bombs. We were reasonably careful. We got some dynamite fuse somewhere. Great fun till some stupid older kids got hold of real dynamite and were throwing partial sticks in peoples front yards. We stopped our hobby immediately we didn't want to be blamed for what they were doing if someone caught us with our homemade bombs. I had about a quart of powder made when we retired so I powered it in a pan in the alley and had a big flash in the pan as our retirement party.1 point

My boyhood friend and I were, shall we say somewhat troublesome. We looked up the recipe for black powder. Talked his mom into a trip to Rexall drug where we bought saltpeter and sulfur. Used some charcoal and brewed up a batch of credible black powder. Then we took a can of Mountain Dew (before the era of poptops) punched a hole in the center of the top and drained out the soda. Let it dry and filled it with our homebrew powder. Used a sparkler for the fuse, lit it and watched. It sputtered for a bit and then the powder really caught fire. The can went about 20 feet high and exploded. We were grounded for a couple of months...lol1 point

I think boys and firecracker demolitions was a rite of passage for most of older guys. lol I've done my share of blowing up models with them as well. Used to like weighting the nose down with modeling clay, so it would look like flying when I tied a string to it and twirled it around. Then of course had to put the firecrackers or the occasional M80 on them. Remember the old wooden gliders we used to get for a nickel and then a dime? Center the M80 them and launch them off into oblivion. lol Then there's the story I've told before...mudball hand grenades and firecrackers stuck into them. Ah...those were the days of our youth. Wish we could all go back there for a while.1 point

Used to slap them together as a kid then blow them up with firecrackers for some reason. It was a neighborhood activity blowing things up with firecrackers. I'm 56 and feel so sad for kids glued to a screen all day and not doing anything exciting. Or even get excited over something as frivolous as blowing up plastic models.1 point

1911alltheway just sent these to me on Friday. Ihad him make these for my Staccato P 4.15 2011. He did a great job they are great, fit and finish is really good, he nailed the designs I asked for. One is a Rodisan style, the other is a Bruce Nelson Combat style, both fit a 1.5" belt and hold the gun snugly, I can't wait to get them broken in. Thanks 1911alltheway you did a great job on making these for me.1 point

Like many of us, I have several 22s. Rifles and pistols. Though pistols are my favorite, I do have 2 rifles that I'll never let go of. A Winchester 75 that was my Dad's. I must have been 7 or 8 when he got it. Paid a tremendous amount of money for it...125 dollars and that included the Unertl scope on it. lol I remember it well. We were living with my grandparents at the time, and they gave him a great deal of hell over spending that kind of money on a gun. That should have been about 1962 or thereabouts. The other is a Ruger 10/22 I got from one of our good guys here...DolomiteSuprafly. It's been heavily customized. All towards great shooting and accuracy. Green Mountain Heavy target barrel, and a Volquartsen trigger group that is unbelievable. More that I don't remember offhand. Dolo cautioned me not to attempt to remove the trigger, as he had polished, fitted, and shimmed every part that needed it. I can tell you that it is a superb 10/22. And has a threaded barrel, so my cheap can is a ball on it.1 point

We had foster kid for couple years back in the 80's. (really short notice kind of thing, 11 years old, we already knew him and his family fell apart). Never a mention of firearms. Then again, this was as I said long time ago, and Union County, to boot. Got the impression that as long as they didn't think we'd eat him, it was better than anything they could provide. - OS1 point
