  2. Weellll........ $20 later. Decisions were made, money was spent, gunsmiths were contacted & I'm turning the proverbial sow's ear into a silk purse. So far, I've replaced the firing pin, polished & repaired the safety & sent the barrelled action off to ER Shaw for a rebarreling to 6.5x55. Once I have it back, it's getting sent right back out to GTs Customizing in Cody, WY to be reblued & have a few twiddly bits color case hardened. In the interim I've got a stunning lump of walnut, that some tit decided to varnish, to strip, polish & apply 30-odd coats of oil to, then ship off for checkering. I can't wait to get this one going!

  4. Picked up a Stoeger STR-9. Got it from local Rural King for $338.42. Came in cardboard box with info, 3 back straps and 3 15 round mags. Made in Turkey. Very Glock like inside and shoots as good as a Glock 19 for me. I would compare to Glock gen3/4 G19 model. Standard 3 dot sights but are metal. Parts do not seem to be interchangeable with Glocks but it does fit Glock 19 holsters. Put 500 rounds thru it so far with 2 failures to completely eject fired casings, strong RSA and 3 times slide locked back with rounds still in mag, found out I was riding up on slide lock. Sight are POA/POI for me and groups at least as well as any Glock 9mm I have owned.

  8. I love fly fishing. I will echo what @Handsome Rob said above. Don't spend any more money on gear or flies and spend that money hiring a guide for a full or half day. Then you can better understand what you might want or need moving forward. Where in East TN region are you located? Aslo Little River Outfitters is a fantastic business. I buy as much from them as I can. What rod and reel did you buy. That looks like an Orvis Mirage but cant tell for sure

  9. Best advice I could give would be to take a half day guided trip. Most guides are super helpful with new fly fishermen & four what it costs, I promise you'll lem more in 6 hours than you will in 3 years of trying to teach yourself. Not just about casting. The casting is the easy part. A guide will teach you how to read water. Which part of a riffle or eddy is most likely to hold fish. They'll teach you why, how & when to put a mend in your drift. How to deal with current shifts & changes. Fly selection. Tippit & leader selection etc. How to finish different flies. Retrieval techniques & tests etc. Everyone thinks that casting is the be all. I promise you, I can teach a 6 year old to throw a respectable line in 15 minutes. Learning WHERE to throw the line is far more important!

  10. Thanks guys, for all of the posts. I've been off of here for a while. I did find a stainless convertible, like new, in the box and took it home with me. Due to COVID, I haven't been able to get out and shoot it. I don't mean I had COVID. I'm an old dude, with a couple of underlying medical conditions, so I haven't gone to OK Corral since this mess started. I can't wait to shoot it. I found a real old one too, and brought it home...sweet trigger, with flat loading gate. I feel like I hit the mother lode!

  13. This year made my 2nd year ever fishing for Crappie and my best year of fishing for them. I might catch bigger later on but for Watts Bar these are dang good fish and my personal best. Dont know the weight just got the measurements. The black went 16 1/4in and 12.5in Girth. The white went 15in with a 12in girth. All I know is they sure are good to look at so the $310 was well spent. I used a old piece of barn wood and stained the edges with Minwax Red Mahogany 225 to get that burnt look on the outer edges. And used Cocunut Oil for the rest to keep the color lighter.

  16. They have bolt action rifle listed in the "assualt rifle" page. Website seems pretty sketchy to me, I would at the very least use one of the online generated one time use CC numbers and be willing to accept that I would never see that money again. I would rather give my business to a reputable dealer than risk it with this setup.

  17. I hadn’t been to one in a while, so last year I thought I would go to the one in Murfreesboro. What a mess. The parking lot was packed over capacity and they were parking on side streets for blocks. They had a line out the front door and the inside looked packed to the gills. I wanted to get a cowboy holster rig for my Blackhawk, and that’s something I need to see in person, not online. But I’m certainly not going to go with this mess going on, masks or no masks.

  21. Wyze $20 Dollars. Plug it in runs off WiFi or has sd card for week or so recording or free 14 day cloud storage. Nothing else to buy or join unless you go with upper plans. I have my idoor camera shooting out night/day. They also have a dedicated outdoor camera. Quality at a fraction of price. Neighbors have a Ring and I was not impressed.

  22. Last year Walmart clearances out a Nightowl 4 camera system for 75 bucks. I bought one. I have been happy with it. Although remote access is slow. Slow to the point of being unusable for anything other than live feeds. If I need to go back through something, the interface in the DVR is the way to go. The cameras are hardwired which I prefer and unlike Dave was mentioning, the power is all done at the DVR so you don't need power at each camera. Personally, I don't want a cloud based service. I don't like cloud storage for anything, especially camera views of my house. I don't use home assistants because I already have a phone listening all of the time and that's more than I want. I also don't want monthly fees and don't trust the cloud services to not change their policy down the road to include monthly fees.

  23. Bubba hit the stock with a rattle can full of good intentions... "Twiddly bits" = bottom metal, trigger, bolt shroud & scope mounts. I'm undecided what to do about a recoil pad. I'd love a nice, checkered steel number, case hardened, but it'll mean a pretty short LOP. Like, 12.5" short.

  24. I used ta love ta fly fish... It's the only " real " fishing i think... I'm too old n wore down to do it now, but i would offer ya the same advice an old fishing buddy offered me 50 or so years ago: 1... Dont worry about how far to cast, just get the line out there. Ya will finally learn how to do it by practicing. Just get the bait out there. 2... If you can look into a pool and see a fish, he can look up abd see you. They are wily, so you need to " hide" from them as much as ya can... 3... Your bait needs to look natural and like its not attached to anything. Cast it and leave it alone. The big ones are smart, they know the difference. 4... This one is completely illegal lotsa places... Use live bait if ya can...HEHEHE... The lesson is that whatever fly ya use needs to look and act " real "... 5... To practice, there is nothin greater than catching bluegill on your fly fishing rig..! Its fantastic, and teaches ta lots about fly technique. 6... Pay attention to where ya wade n walk. Poison snakes like the water too. Have fun..! Its a great hobby, and the absolute pinnacle of the " fishing craft "...! Heres to great fishing adventures... " Lunker " leroy..

  25. I don't like to disparage a company but I was extremely unhappy. Little information was described with no 360 degree pictures. In addition to the plastic hanger, this setup wasn't well thought out and fitted properly. I replaced it with the Ben Stoeger Boss holster, hanger and belts. Holster Packages.html

  26. I think its government related as all the test sites are listed with contact info on the City of Memphis Covid-19 update web page. But the actual test site I used belongs to a local church sponsored low income/charity clinics. Christ Community Health Center. They have about a dozen clinics doing free testing all around Memphis. This one just happened to be the closest one I could get into. However, there are also quite a few other places in the Memphis testing system too including many other clinics and hospitals. Close to 30 in all. However, there is no common data base to access that I know of. They are very private about the info requiring you properly ID yourself before giving you the results. They ask full name , address and birth date when you get the call. I think test results are covered under HIPAA. If you call the main testing phone number, they tell you to call the specific clinic where you were tested. Good luck with that. I tried to call for my results twice and ended up on terminal hold. "You are caller number 65 in the que, please hold." Yes, you can go to a private doctor to be tested and get your results back much quicker. But you will have to pay for the test. I don't know the cost and not all doctors will do them. Likewise they say if you test positive to call your doctor and NO NOT go to his office until he gives you instructions. They don't want infected people sitting around in waiting rooms. BTW: if you are scheduled for any type of medical procedure, no matter how minor. Many Doctors will insist that you get a Covid test before they will do it.

  27. I have to be careful; I don’t want this to turn into a caliber war. I work for an agency that has vowed to stick with .40s. It was decided long before the ammo shortage even started and before the oversees contract for Gen 5 .40 Glocks was announced. We just didn’t see the reason to switch. I can’t recall the last time we had someone fail to qualify and we have even recently had some agents bring the top shot award back from various schools with them using a Glock 23. I try to keep up with agency handguns across the state. Ten years ago, and maybe as recently as five years ago, we didn’t have single state or local agency issuing or requiring 9mm. There were a few, very few, feds with 9mm. In July of 2020, I think TN has a three way tie for 9mm, 357 Sig, and 40s&w being the most popular LE calibers in the state. I think .357 Sig may be dying a slow death. If THP ever dumps the 357 Sig a lot of TN agencies will follow. Some of my friends at Hamilton County SO and Bradley County SO said it will be be near impossible for them to switch calibers because a good 90% of their handguns are deputy owned. It would be a logistical nightmare for agencies like theirs to reimburse officers to upgrade to a new caliber unless they did a slow integration and just allowed deputies and new hires to adopt the new caliber. Then you have to stock two calibers of ammo. That seems to be very common for sheriff’s departments to require deputies to buy their own and it’s been 40s for two decades or more. A few local PDs have the same practice. I heard an explanation for 40 being readily available over everything else this go around. Citizens that shoot a lot tend to shoot a lot of 9 and 45 so of course they are hoarding those. A lot of civilians with a .40 keep a box or two around at most. However, I recently heard the ammo manufacturers are running all the plants wide open the best they can. The 9mm side of the plant can’t easily produce 40 and vice versa. If each line can produce 100k rounds a day, and more people are buying 9mm, it is the reason the shelves are still stocked and getting replenished with 40. If you like to shoot, and you don’t have multiple calibers and are stockpiling all ammo you find cheap, you are doing it wrong.

  28. Man, I might throw rocks before I paid $0.43/round for 9mm.
    1 point
  29. Yea it certainly is more expensive, granted I cast my own lead bullets. But I can load 9mm, .38 special, .40 S&W and .45 acp for about a nickel a round. That would be $2.50 per 50 round box or a savings of 63,8% based on the 9mm I just purchased. And btw I don't even own a 9mm, got that for my son.

  30. BSPS has good stuff and good service. Ben is a multi-time USPSA national champion and I believe IPSC world champion and understands what competitive shooters need. I just wish he sold more stuff. What was the holster getting trashed and what is the new one? As a fellow lefty, I have a couple holsters in the drawer, but haven't gone through that many that I didn't like. About all I use is either Double Alpha or Comp-Tac.

  31. Probably. They have the testing procedure down pat. You can register by text, they will give you a window of when and where to be, Stay in your car. As the line moves along you can be checked-in, your paperwork pulled and all this can be done without so much as rolling down your window. Once you pull into the tent, the actual test only takes about a minute and then you're on your way. I got tested about 2 weeks ago. I showed up at the designated time and place and there were already 50-60 cars in line ahead of me. However, once testing started, I was done in about 45 minutes. The problem is that so many people are being tested, that the labs are seriously backed up. What was 3 days to get results is now much longer. It took 8 days for me to get mine. BTW: Negative.

  34. Get some cheaper flies and cut off the barbed end and practice using these. Gets you up on how the fly acts/reacts to the line. Also practice trying knots used to join the fly line to leader and making up leaders, good to know even if you buy pre-made leaders.

  36. If you have an Orvis store near you, I understand they have a great class which includes a field trip. If you have a Basspro or Cabelas the person working the fly fishing section might be able to turn you on to an instructor. Slight thread drift: Don't, no matter what you think, decide to tie your own flies to save money.

  37. All these lights seem (to me) to be pretty much the same quality. I don’t want or need a weapon light, but I know a lot of people do. My issue is the switching on lights that have variable levels. I own Surefire, Streamlight and Fenix (Olight if you count my little keychain light). I want an on/off switch and a different switch to cycle through the light levels. I don’t want to have to tap out Morse code to change the light level. The Fenix PD35 V2.0 does exactly what I want for an everyday carry light, so now I have three of them. The Streamlight PROTAC HL 5-X does what it is supposed to do for a big light. But I just leave it on bright, the TEN TAP system they have is ridiculous. I wouldn’t buy another light from them as long as they are using that. Surefire has placed themselves out of my price range. If I was a cop, or military, sure, but I’m not and I can’t justify the cost.

  38. I love to hear experiences like this. If you haven't already considered or done it, I would suggest seeing if you can contact the store owner and share that exact story. They should know what they are doing right and how good an employee they have. Everyone seems to go that route when they have a problem, and it may be underappreciated in the other direction. Have fun with the new toy.
