  1. That is ridiculous I completely agree with @DaveTN that it’s the wrong gun if you can’t use the sights. This is coming from an active female shooter who has had to put down 20+ different guns cause they don’t work for one reason or another. If she can confidently shoot the gun from the shoulder and even if the recoil is a lot but she can handle it I don’t see a problem. But if she thinks it is that big of a problem then there are other guns... To win this debate rather than print out our comments and give a PowerPoint at a family dinner I would buy them a training session with a younger female instructor who will set the record straight.

  2. Stock or not is irrelevant. If she shoots it from the hip don’t stand behind her or you might be 3D printing something for yourself. A permit “trainer” suggesting someone fire a shotgun from the hip is about the stupidest thing I’ve heard in a...today.

  3. Other questions that come to mind: What other advice did this instructor give? Was the rest of it better than the advice in question, or worse? Might be worth your girlfriend and the others taking a class from a different instructor...

  4. A 16" rifle with an aimpoint, or similar long battery life red dot. Train her to flip the safety off and point the dot at soon to be dead stuff. Boom. Done. It would be a bonus if she got bit by the handgun bug and gave you a run for your money at an IDPA match.

  5. I completely agree, she has very little experience with firearms in general, and hasn't been around them really until we got together about a year ago, but shes recently had a big bloom in interest. I'm trying to get her to try different guns, I think a 20 gauge might be better, or she can shoot my ar-15 or maybe even a pistol caliber carbine might be a good option. I have a ton of handguns, but shes just not really developed the fundamentals, so shes not confident with a handgun YET and I get that. But we're working on it.

  6. Shooting from the hip doesn’t make much sense. If she can’t shoot a shotgun from the shoulder; she has the wrong weapon, or at least the wrong gauge. There is a lot of controversy over pellet size in a home defense load. 00 is more common than 000, both work fine if a person can handle them. I’ve seen people make an argument for smaller shot, because apparently they are worried about shooting through a wall. But most any self defense round, shotgun, handgun or rifle will go though drywall. Point instinct shooting is how I train with a handgun, using sights is target shooting. You may not have the time or lighting condition to use sights. But again, there are plenty of people that don’t agree with that. She needs to first get time and experience with different weapons and then do what is comfortable for her, and that allows her to put the rounds on target. A group of us went shooting a couple of weeks ago. My daughter can outshoot us all.

  8. Slightly off topic, but I wouldn't want a small woman's primary home defense weapon to be a 12 ga shotgun. It's just too much to think about to get off a second shot unless you practice, practice, practice, and if you hate the recoil, you're not going to practice. A better choice for a small woman would be a short carbine in 9mm or 40 cal. My bedside long gun is a Kel Tec Sub 2000 that takes Glock 40 cal mags.

  9. Take her to a range and have her try both ways and see which works for her.

  10. I have run Lee 3 die sets for many calibers and never had a problem. Go with the carbide dies and you will not regret it.

  11. I agree on the hours but with the Virus they can't keep enough staff to answer the phones so they went from 8 to 12 until they can get some people back that went on 14 day quarantine!!!

  12. Seeing kids hurt is hard on even the most seasoned Officers. I’ve seen plenty of bad violent things committed by what people call “real criminals”, but I’ve never had a nightmare from them. I’ve had nightmares from things I saw traffic offenders do while working traffic; most involved kids. BTW...12 hours is too long for a street cop or dispatcher to work. Its dangerous for everyone involved.

  13. I made the mistake of volunteering to go to go to LEADS (Law Enforcement Agencies Data System) school at the U of I for a week, so I could party. Little did I know that meant I could be used to fill in for dispatchers when necessary. It gave me new respect for the dispatchers. It also made me drink a lot after work on the nights I had to do that. I’d take dealing with the crazies on the street any day over taking calls and trying to keep track of a bunch of cops. It was a very stressful job.

  14. I remember when someone here wanted to know why dispatchers send Officers when someone calls in about a man with a gun. They do it because it is there job to go find out why someone is calling. Our Chief would have fired a dispatcher for that. I’ve heard several times when an Officer was quizzing the dispatcher about why one of our frequent flyers was calling, and a Command Officer get on the air and Say “Go find out!”. Some people, sometimes have to be reminded what their job is.

  15. But that’s just it, once we start using the threat of violence to get what we want; we are no better than the dirt bags that are doing it now. “Do what we say or we’ll burn it down!” The only thing that can stop those type of threats is to put them in prison. I have no doubt some looters will get shot if they move out of the cities. But I also have no doubt if they are white and the DA is a BLM or antifa supporter; they will get charged whether the evidence supports it or not. This isn’t about justice. Sheriff’s are elected, they don’t answer to anyone but the people. Police Chiefs answer to a Mayor or City Council; that needs to change. I’m waiting for a Police Chief or Mayor to be fired or brought up on charges stemming from Nonfeasance or Malfeasance. Officers involved in not putting out the calls that come in, are violating their oath of Office. I don’t know if Dispatchers take an oath or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see some of them sued civilly as this progresses. We have talked many times here about the military or cops saying they were “just following orders”. Politicians telling the Police to “stand down” while citizens are being attacked and killed is not a lawful order. Officers will not be able to hide behind it when the dust settles.

  16. Does this Mossberg 500 have a stock? Without a stock, I can see the allure of shooting from the hip with certain loads.

  17. Were going to try put handguns at point blank actually. She wants to shoot handguns right now so we're gonna go to shoot point blank and try a bunch out.

  18. She'd probably be better served with a scary looking, evil black rifle. Low recoil, tons of ammo for disposal, extreme damage at close range.

  20. I’ve got the Dewalt flexvolt blower and trimmer. They’ll last longer with a 9ah battery than you will. I run a Ryobi 40v mower on my 3/4 acre lot. The 5ah battery is typically *just* enough. I bought an extra 2ah battery for when I’m slow. The Lithium ion batteries have a much better life cycle than the old NiCads. They’re typically rated to have at least 80% capacity remaining after 40 charges.

  21. I can agree with you on a few points but I have 1 logic I live by and that is "Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6" for not being prepared and I will believe that as long as I am alive!!! That is why I always have something when I am out in public.

  23. It all depends on what amp hour battery you use. The string trimmer will last about 1.5 hours with steady use, the hedge trimmer a little less with a 9 amp hour. If you can use the hedge trimmer for 30 mins straight you are doing something, it is a bit heavy. As far as batters have not had an issue yet. My son has had the chain saw for 2 years now and no battery issue, it is a beast. The battery will last long long enough to fill a small truck cutting 3" to 5" logs, that is with a 12 amp hour battery.

  25. I have literally a whole drawer full of knives. They include Kabars, Helle, ESEE, Bokers, Keyshawn’s, Spydercos, Cold Steels, CRKT, Gerbers, Svords etc. I’m 57 years old. I love to camp, hike and kayak. And my two constant companions in the outdoors, the last 5 or 6 years are a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker and a Mora Companion HD. Neither knife costs me more than $25. And the Deluxe Tinker does double duty as my everyday EDC. I also have a Buck 110 that rides in my truck, but it’s not been out in a year or so.

  27. Sometimes it’s the simple little things in life that clear your mind. Like driving downtown to pick up a delicious pizza then going back home and they play one of the most overplayed songs from the greatest rock band ever. All windows down and the radio blaring for everyone to hear.

  28. My Dad has hunted it a good bit. I did the last two years with him. Took a decent buck last year. I like the area, but it is much more chopped up with close houses than others I have hunted. Where we set up last year it was hard to tell where the wma property ended and the private property started. No idea how Dad started hunting there or how he found the part we hunted.

  29. So its against the law to wear a mask while mandating that people wear a mask. That explains why those making these proclamations generally aren't wearing masks.

  32. Bingo..! Ammo on high side of diameter tolerance... Tight chamber on low side... Usin the chamber for a " go- no go " gage will sort out the ammo problem im thinkin. Good luck. leroy

  36. Great idea! You know, you could always set her up with a handgun that has a red dot. When you show up to the range with it you could say things like "I'm testing it for her", "I wanna make sure it's sighted in", "It's not my red dot". lol.
