I received some further info this morning (Kudae from the Nitro Express forums; an actual German, Mauser historian! In Germany!! ) "This rifle was proofed at the Suhl proofhouse in 1912 as the bore/land (notgroove/bullet!)diameter is marked as 7.8 mm, but the service load info is still given as 2.75 gramm smokeless rifle powder and a steel jacketed bullet. The CROWN + crown/N marks indicate proof using the 4000 atm special proof powder, according to the proof rule of July 23, 1893. The rifle was proofed only once for the 8x57 I cartridge. As it is rebored to 9x57, it lacks the mandatory reproof . So the reboring was probably done about 1920, when the „military“ 8x57 was prohibited and proofhouses were not operating due to revolutionary turmoil. As the worker’s marks under the receiver show, the action is a Gewehr 98 one of military production, smuggled out of the Erfurt arsenal. A „grey market“ action, sometimes encountered at that time. The crudely scratched name on the barrel is probably of a former owner. No reputable gunmaker would have signed his gun with such scribbling. The rifle was once mounted with claw mounts. As the scope was not „liberated“ too in 1945, the now useless bases were removed and the front base dovetail in the receiver ring filled in. "3 points

So basically, from a combination of the info I've researched & received: It was built at the Oberndorf munitions plant sometime after 1898 & before 1901 where it languished until it was sent to the Suhl proof house in 1912 (common for rifles to be bulk manufactured, then batch proofed as needed) From the it was shipped to the arsenal in Erfurt, where some enterprising young nerk decided he needed it more than the military & nicked it! Sometime after the Great War, during Germany's 'reconstruction' effort, said nerk (unlikely, due to being probably incredibly dead) or someone else had it bored out to 9mm, to avoid the military caliber ban, but it somehow managed to evade being re-proofed (the equivalent nowadays of owning a suppressor without a stamp. Very slap-on-the-wristy) Time passed, it passed through the hands of one Karl or his brother Kurt Schüler, deer were probably killed & then a really keen 19 year old (probably) American GI decided to throw it in his sea bag & bring it here! God only knows who he was, or where it came in, but it ended up in Alaska, where my old mate Bob picked it up, carried it to Africa, killed at least a lion (and lord only knows what else) and then it ended up in my sticky mitts! It's so cool I can't hardly stand it!2 points

If you want the aperture sights it looks like they came with Lyman No. 48. Found several possibilities on Flea Bay. Looks like you will need the front sight block too. My recommendation is to call Champions Choice over in La Vergne and tell them what you're looking for. They've taken a lot of my money over the years! (615) 793-40662 points

That is exactly why a buyer should go to a rental range and try guns out, or go with others with similar guns to try. Ignorance wastes a lot of money, both on buyer and seller sides.2 points

We called them knuckle busters too. I was watching a youtube video on boating the other day and saw a center console Coast guard boat and it had a spinner on it. Don't know if I ever saw one on a boat. Did you notice the cash register .05 and dime. Stuff sure was cheaper back then, I recall around '63 I could walk into the Western auto store and get a box of .22 shorts for $0.39. And the kicker was nobody thought that odd at all!!! Those of us that grew up in the 50's and 60's have a lot to be thankful for!!2 points

I realized I hadn't seen a Doctor in the last 10 years except for colonoscopy's and figured since I had passed 60 I had better find one I could call mine in case I had to have one. So last Friday I went to a Doctor for initial consultation and general review. So when he came in the room he asked what I was there for and I told him the above and coupled with the fact that I was getting old and for the last couple of years I had been a biscuit away from 200 pounds and wanted to lose some weight. I then asked him how long he had been doctoring. He seemed a little put off by that but then started giving me a full run down on his education and experience. I stopped him and explained I just wanted to find a Doctor that was going to out last me so I didn't have to find another one. He laughed and told me to get on the scale. I must have eaten the biscuit...with jelly. He told me to cut the carbs and limit the sugar, and after review of my blood work he told me to come back when I needed a Doctor. I have the same aches and pains any old dude like me can expect, bad knees, bum shoulder, stiff joints etc. but I was never too easy on myself between multiple collapsed lungs and several broken bones etc. in my younger days, so I just feel blessed to be in the shape I am so far. If I can just drop 25 to 30 pounds I will be happy. Even without my ice cream, sweet tea and mashed potatoes.2 points

Lately I’ve been curious to know what I could get away with in the back yard. Have really wanted to try some CCI Quiets but none are readily available locally....as in I want them now without driving all over town. Went to Academy today needing something else and checked the .22 shelf just in case their online inventory was wrong. No CCI’s but they did have a couple of boxes of the Super Colibri. Known about these for years but never fooled with them because didn’t think they’d clear the barrel of my old 27” Winchester 67A. Well, today’s version of that ammo is not primer only. There is in fact a little bit of powder in there. Enough to easily clear a 27” barrel, punch right through an aluminum water bottle at 8 yards, and satisfy my immediate urge. Not any louder than a pellet gun at all. I’m about to rain hell on chipmunks.1 point

You just don’t get that kind of cool factor from a gun on the rack at WalMart. That is why I am a fan of old guns.1 point

I’ve got a group of Protechs, and they definitely fall into the “buy once, cry once” category. If you want a quality auto, you’re into Protech money. I have yet to find a cheaper auto that locks up as tight or as solidly as my Protechs. They’re 100% worth the price of admission. Also, I’m in on this run of TR-4s. @willis681 point

Tough road Bersaguy. I just spent 7 days cooking for 11 to 13, 2 meals per day, and camping in an RV for 7 days. Am experiencing pine in my neck, for the past 4 days, since returning home. Feels like a stiff neck but is not. Afraid it is nerve pain because it has not subsided much. I am 72 also. Have had neck fusion 2 times and hoping this will go away w/out surgery but is very debilitating for now. Also experiencing agent orange poisoning for my time in Vietnam and all that goes along with that. Also had knee replacement 3 years ago. Life in older years is tough for most.1 point

Just watched a YouTube review of this knife and all i can say is wow. Id love to have one, but I think these are a tad too expensive for me. I have a cheap automatic knife I picked up at a gun show a few years back, but its not that well made. These look awesome. Anyone recommend a less expensive good quality automatic for me? I like a good sized knife like this Protech Operator in the video.1 point

You may have seen in the press a couple of weeks ago where a couple of hair stylists in Missouri tested positive for COVID-19, and there was a big outcry about all the clients they had seen and how many would get sick. Both the stylists and the clients were wearing masks at the time of contact. The incubation period has now passed, and none of the 140+ clients have tested positive. That by itself is a testament to masks - maybe not being perfect - but significantly lowering the risk of transmission. So, I look at it two ways: 1. If you are in at at risk population - definitely wear a mask. 2. I look at it personally in terms of compassion - I'm going to wear a mask - because even though I'm generally low risk - I don't want to spread it to someone who may not be.1 point

My boys are now 40 and 44. But while they were living at home it was a constant competition to see if Bonnie and I could keep food in the fridge. They would eat it before it got cold. Greg it my size and not much extra around the waist. Brian is 6'4" and fairly lean. But whenever they come over for a visit they hit the fridge first before they sit down.0 points

Lost my little girl this last weekend, She almost made it to sweet 16. Ill say this. Be careful using Nashville Veterinary Services on Sidco Dr. I brought her in for a nagging cough.I knew she had CHF, and a collapsing trachea. It happens to small breeds as they get older. I knew her days were numbered but not by hours. They doped her up so bad, I got her back she was like a zombie and could barely walk. The plan was to keep her overnight on O2 and Lasix to reduce fluid around her lungs and heart. They basically popped her w a load of Trazodone, and left her in a cage w oxygen for a day. They charged me for 100 mg of trazodone, proper dose for her weight should have been 3.5 mg ...yah really. The bill was supposed to be firm at 1169.00 with a phone call if anything extra was needed. They didn't keep me posted, I had to drag info out of them, when I got there the next day, the bill was jacked up to 1469.00 Caught em charging me for 28 doses of one med on the bill and disputed it on site. They dragged it out to charge an extra 100 per 8 hrs they had her. They jacked me around for an hour till i gave in and paid to get my pup out of there.( paying by card has its advantages). She was a doorknob for a week. So doped up, staggering around... coughing started again, breath was short so I figured we'd try one more time to get her leveled out.Took her to Banfield in Smyrna. They already were aware of her condition, as I took here there first about a month ago. They gave her a liquid lasix injection, and gave her back to me. She wasnt real happy and was breathing hard. She went in to CA, and died in my arms while driving up 24 to the house, 10 mins after I pulled out of Banfield. You know I am not real happy. Thats an understatement. Lost my bff of 15 years, and got treated like crap by a money grinding millennial staffed pet hospital, that sucks ass. It aint over yet. Dustbuster knows how to clean house with a pen and not a sword. So, being part of the community for a while, and knowing a lot of guys on here personally and professionally, If you see someone that has a young chihuahua, pref short hair applehead that needs to be rescued, or has non puppy mill pups DM me. Its too soon but hopefully one of y'all will remember this and think of me. Itll be a timing thing, but Ive always been a keeper of the lords little creatures. So looking for a new friend,, AND whatever you do in Nashville, or Clarksville, avoid Nashville Veterinary Specialsh*its like the plague. If you have to use them make them commit to pricing, so they don't play on emotions like they tried with me. Hold them to what they say, but Ill get a glass of icewater in hell before I ever use them again.. Thanks !!!0 points
