  2. Thanks Rod. It's not a hinged plate, just the standard sliding model. Im in deep conversation with a gent on 24hr Campfire who dated it to originally built between 1899 & 1901. The barrel is original to the action, but at some point has been rebored. The fact that it has a 'crown over N' proof, along with the plain crown, is suggesting a rebore. A fresh barrel would only have the one stamp, unless it was also rebored & that wouldn't make sense. Also, the matched 4 digit serial. There isn't any way to determine the rebore date, other than the second proof mark is post 1950 (I believe) & it would have to have been proofed before resale or return to the customer. It seems, from all this, that it was exported from Germany post 1950. The original maker's mark & factory stamp, as previously mentioned, have been removed when the dovetail was cut in the front ring. Im trying to get hold of a gent from the Nitro Express forum who seems to hold the key to understanding the random letter & number stamps under the receiver. He's in central Germany somewhere, in his late 70s & i'm guessing it's some big muck-a-muck in the Mauser collecting circles. Im going here can tell me which particular factory it came from. It doesn't really matter, at this point. I know everything I really need to (the fact that there's a 1:3 chance that it's pre-20th century just makes me giddy all over! ) but it would be nice to uncover at least the important bullet points of its history. Then imma go whack an elk with it.

  3. It's a WW1 Imperial that was re barreled and proofed commercial N. Those Gew 98's had a straight bolt so it was bent or forged over and ground. The reason they made them in different chamberings than 8 mm was many countries didn't allow civilians to own anything in a military caliber

  5. How old is older? I'm 55, and just today wore a mask for the first time (all of 20 minutes or so), because it was mandatory in a VA facility. I am not worried in the least about this, I think much of this has been too politicized and that makes me even more skeptical about the whole thing.

  6. I have had my share of issues with ailments and disease. Hard not to see all the folks far worse off than me. I have good insurance and a family support system that I'm very thankful for

  8. If anyone has any idea how to age or identify my latest acquisition, i'd really appreciate the help. All I know is that it's a commercial production on a '98 action in 9x57. It's insanely light (maaaaaybe 6lb) half octagon, half round barrel & the stock is veneer thin around the barrel!

  9. This ^^^ It also appeared to me..... to be a post WWI conversion. IIRC Imperial(WWI) and Nazi(WWII) markings on the side and top of the front receiver ring were generally removed (ground off) in order to export to other european countries; and to make them legal to own in post war Germany. Lot's of records were destroyed by Allied and Russian forces post WWII and unfortunately, many pre/post WWI military and commercial Mauser records were lost. If it had been a factory commercial German Mauser; the "Mauser" logo would have been stamped on top of the front ring. Commercial variants were tolerated and generally left in "virgin" state; but not always. Because there is nothing visible stamped on the top of the ring and on the left side of the receiver; it's a safe bet you have "probable" post WWI conversion. Looking thru a copy of "The Mauser Bolt Actions ....M91-M98... A Shop Manual" By Jerry Kuhnhausen, it dose appear to be a M98. All that being said, I have one question; Is the floor plate "hinged"? If it is hinged, according to Jerry Kuhnhausen, early commercial M98 Orberndorf sporters could be had with adjustable double set triggers, and the sporters had hinged floor plates. In your first pic, it appears the floor plate is not hinged; but it is difficult to determine. Hinged, could be a commercial Orberndorf sporter; not hinged, a post war M98 sporter conversion. That's all I've got. Hope this helps Regards Rod

  14. I remember it all....as a kid growing up in the 50's we had a store much like that not 2 miles from our house. I loved that place. Old Mr Timmons was always good for a piece of hard candy from the big jar on the counter. And yes...my first car had a suicide knob on it.

  15. Yep, getting older ain't great but, if you try and at least eat right sometimes and try and live right, its a little better. My health is still good, I'm 53, and not on any medications yet.

  16. I rather agree with you on this. However, while talking with another member over the weekend...this was one of the topics of conversation. I asked his opinion, and he expressed that the Covid 19 was a possible candidate for a second, even possibly a third round of infections. I expressed my comments saying that I was dubious, as so much hasn't truly been kosher in this whole situation. So, we disagreed on the topic. No harm, no foul. We all have opinions. We base them on reports from "knowledgeable and reputable" sources. The problem is, that for me, there are simply too many of these sources all contradicting themselves and the "facts." I'd say we are split about 35/65 on those that disbelieve and those that do. I'm being loose with my interpretation of the numbers. Being a skeptic as well as a card-carrying tinfoil cap guy these days...it might even be as close as a 50/50 mix. I base that on the number of people I see wearing vs not wearing any kind of "protective" mask. The younger crowd seem so much more not to wear, while the percentage of we older folks seem to be more worried about it. All opinion and speculation on my part though.

  17. 52, shoot I can barely remember 52, but it was better than almost 68. I am still trying to figure out how my daughter got to be 49 this February. Forrest Gump had it right, life is like a box of chocolates that somebody has already eaten the good ones!!

  18. Cuomo is celebrating phase one reopening. Good news is I hadn't seen or heard about much rioting in NYC. I did catch a video and this came to mind Because this is the video https://mobile.twitter.com/issac_george/status/1268372890707202060 I have a theory. Agitators showed up with a few pallets of bricks, the locals, in true NY fashion, stole and then used the brick on the agitators. They used the bricks to simply break glass, as they only wanted the stuff, and reading material from B&N.

  20. Well, I'm late to this party as usual and have read about 6 pages before jumping to the last one. When I first heard and read about it I began to prepare with the necessary items such as food and paper products but didn't go crazy on paper products like many people did. I can't eat those and I focused more on the food end of it. I made sure my freezers were full and cabinets were full and my SIL and daughter do my weekly shopping for me when they do theirs. I have not been off the property in almost 3 months but I do go out and walk the property as we have 5 acres to walk around on. I have company come by and visit from time to time and we visit while doing social spacing. mostly out on the back deck. I do have about 10 N95 masks my SIL got for me from his work place. They have to buy them by the cases because they are used in the performance of their job. They spray a product that is a fire proofing agent in commercial buildings while they are under construction. I really don't care about going out and tempting fate. I have a heart condition, I am diabetic, I have had lung conditions since the both collapsed when that truck hit me back years ago and I am 72 years old so don't see much need to push the envelope and tempt fate!

  23. Same here. Left in Fall of '18 and Right in Fall of '19. Total replacements on both. Still have big-time swelling in right leg. Degenerative disc disease in lumbar spine as well as arthritis in back and now hands. And just to make things interesting...tendonitis in right elbow. So I hit 68 this year and all the physical restrictions have kicked in. Not a happy camper. My point is....the "Golden Years" ain't having much gold for most of us. But for you GT and you E4 I offer prayers for recovery. For the rest of us...suck it up.

  24. Getting old sucks Tell me about it. today is my birthday, I'm 73. The only thing keeping my here is, every morning I get up and check the grass. If it's green on my side, that's a plus for the day.
