I really appreciate being retired when I have time to slap various parts together and save a fine old gun from the parts bin, a true labor of love. In this particular case, I spotted this marked "ORIGINAL GOLDEN 39A" parts set at everygunpart.com about a year ago and jumped on it. I thought it weird that to make this a non gun, all they did was cut the tangs off the lower receiver half. Who am I to argue what constitutes a transferable frame . The set was also missing the butt stock, bolt assembly and inner mag tube but figured those can all be found eventual. As for the cut up frame, Numrich had Marlin 1897 straight grip frames (no FFL) so I got one and integrated it into the 39a upper. Straightened out the curved lever to match the straight tang and I was off to building a 39 that would be configured like an old world gun. I shortened the fat forend by 3" and put it on a disc grinder diet. Shortened the barrel to 17" and put 1/2x28 threads on it in case I ever spring for a can. The butt stock is an unknown from Ebay that is an odd ball since it was hollow between the tang cuts and was made with a threw bolt instead of tang screw attachment. No idea what it came off of but it was a bit over sized to the Marlin tangs so it inletted good and fits pretty good. Luckily, the microgroove bore was mint end to end and cut down with the lite butt stock this puppy weighs in at exactly 5 lbs. The full size 39A I have next to it is 7.5 lbs as you see it. A tank by comparison. Every 39 I ever target shot, shot very well with most any ammo. The group you see is 40' with that cheap Federal 550 pack of hi vels Walmart used to sell for $17.99 before the great ammo drought of a few years back. That stuff is not prime target ammo but the microgrooves like it. After I dialed it in at center, the 2" red dot has 2 mag loads in it totaling 24 shots.6 points

I had an issue with prescription pills for 2 years after having multiple back surgeries. I went to 2 treatment centers/ detox in a year. I’m 3 years clean now by the grace of God and a program I work daily. Anyways.. I’ve never had an issue buying firearms since then.3 points

Telling longtime members such as @Magiccarpetrides to go police the crosswalks at a school is not a good start to making friends. Keep in mind that he has paid money to support this site via benefactor memberships, you so far have not. And before you respond “I’M JUST KIDDING CHILL BRO” let me just encourage you to tread lightly.3 points

I really wish that Tennessee would adopt reciprocity on Lifetime Sportsman licenses like some of our neighboring states have done. There's a change I could get behind.3 points

My wife and I are going. She wanted to go on a trip for our 25th anniversary. We were going to Cody, Wyoming bit our flight got cancelled. This seemed like a good fall back plan. I don’t reckon things are being burned or looted there. We’ll have fun whether or not the fish bite.2 points

A lower is a receiver. A receiver is always to be listed as "other firearm" on a 4473. All receivers, whether new or used. Stripped or complete. Whether there is a butt stock or brace attached or not. Whether it is lawful for a pistol build or not. That said, what an FFL correctly or incorrectly marks on a 4473 does not ultimately determine the legal classification of a firearm, nor the legality of any given future configuration of it. A firearm first configured as a rifle stays a rifle. First configured as a handgun, it may go back and forth between handgun and rifle. - OS2 points

Get your topwaters in order and make sure your depthfinder is running well. The topography of Guntersville is good - you've got decent flats that are a ways off the bank - so you can sort of park it in deeper water and cast into the grass flats for good bass fishing. Panfish bite should also still be pretty strong, too. It's a gorgeous lake.2 points

As posted above everyone ideas will be different. I recommend the S&W M&P Shield for concealability. I wouldn’t recommend the Shield EZ; too many shooters have had problems. Or if you can stand a bigger gun with more rounds, the M&P Compact 4” M2.0.2 points

Well, that leaves me out, I've not worn one yet. I was going to when I went to attempt to get a haircut, when they finally opened, but it was just for active duty at the time. Not that I don't take precautions, but wearing anything not rated for this is senseless to me, and since I'm not sick, it doesn't help others either. There is nobody in my household more susceptible than any other healthy person so not worried about that, and I don't socialize with anyone who is either. I'm not stupid, I'm not going around licking toilet seats or even shopping cart handles, but I'm also not doing more than washing my hands properly a bit more often than usual. I think it's actually worse wearing masks and gloves, with people constantly having to adjust the darn things with their potentially contaminated hands, gloved or not. I do think it's serious, but not to the level everyone seems to make it out to be. And now that the riots have once again brought out out all the masses, any progress the forced quarantine may of had, if any, is out the window.2 points

https://wreg.com/news/bill-to-carry-guns-without-permit-passes-tennessee-house-committee-vote-despite-pleas-from-memphis-leaders/ MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A bill that would allow Tennesseans to carry guns without a permit passed its first hurdle in the state capitol, after the Memphis police director told lawmakers it would be detrimental to the city’s safety Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings went to Nashville to express his concern to lawmakers, but it didn’t work. “With masks and guns, it will appear to be the wild, wild West,” Rallings said. The bill would allow Tennesseans 21 and older, or a military member between 18 and 20, to go armed without a permit. It sparked hours of discussion Tuesday in the House Judiciary Committee, where it ultimately passed. Shelby County Crime Commission President Bill Gibbons said he’s nervous about what it could mean for convicted felons. “They will be emboldened to carry firearms even more and openly, because they know there is no basis for police to stop them and ask if they have a permit,” Gibbons said. Rallings also addressed lawmakers, saying he believes permitless carry will increase violence at a time when violent crime is up 5% in the Bluff City, aggravated assaults and shootings up 8% and murders up 30%. He said 90% of the murders so far this year were committed with firearms. He also told lawmakers he thinks it will endanger the lives of your men and women on the MPD force. “I fully believe in our Second Amendment right; however, I am against illegal guns,” Rallings explained Wednesday. “By moving forward with this law, we are going in the wrong direction.” Rallings released a further statement Wednesday, saying: I went before the House Judiciary Committee yesterday, standing up for the safety of all the citizens of Tennessee. I am not against guns, and I fully believe in our Second Amendment right; however, I am against illegal guns and guns that are being used to kill kids and law-abiding citizens. We are losing too many lives to gun violence. By moving forward with this law, we are going in the wrong direction. The last thing Tennessee needs is gun legislation that will allow the permitless carry of handguns, concealed or unconcealed, without a permit. We have a permit process in place. We should leave the system as is which requires training and a background check. Maintaining these guidelines is crucial for everyone’s safety. Kat McRitchie with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America said it’s extremely frustrating to see the legislature take up bills that she says are not essential bills in this coronavirus pandemic. “The permitting system is our mechanism as citizens, to demonstrate what responsible carrying looks like,” she said. But others disagree, like state Rep. Bruce Griffey (R-Paris). “I do not think it’s proper for this legislative body to tell a law abiding citizen that you have to go do something extra to protect yourself, your family and your home,” Griffey said. The bill also contains a part that would stiffen penalties for stealing a gun, making it a felony and mandating a six-month sentence. Gibbons said the crime commission would support that part of the bill. Supporters of the bill feel like it will only be a around a $3 million loss for the state. Gibbons felt like that was too optimistic and thinks it’s going to be more around $20 million. The bill has more hurdles to cross before it becomes law. It next goes to House Finance Committee.1 point

If I was going and wanted a chance to catch a big fish or 2 I would go to Lake Chickamauga down near Dayton Tennessee and you would not have to buy a license and have a much better chance of catching a big fish!! Use same baits you would on Guntersville.1 point

The last tournament I fished was on that lake and it was the most miserable trip and week I ever spent fishing and it was the last time I fished for about 5 years and then I went back to night fishing for smallmouth's on Percy Priest Lake and have not done that now in 3 years. We got down there on Tuesday to begin practicing and it was raining dogs and cats and winds 30+MPH It was that way all the way thru Friday and wake up Saturday to zero wind and high bluebird skies. We started the tournament and about 2 hours later my partner said did you hear that? I said what and he said never mind and then about 15 minutes later he said it again and I said you hearing Gallatin calling and he said you heard it to huh? An hour later we were back at motel, packed up and got credit for that night coming and we were back home before the 1st day weigh in started. We fished the first day for 3 hours and never got a bite is why we went home. Went thru Hell in Practice for 4 days and then wake up to a beautiful day told us the bite was not going to be on and we left. I had looked forward to fishing that tournament all year long and it broke my heart! I never fished another tournament since. All I can tell you about the lake is make sure you have plenty of Hollow Body Frogs and 60lb Braided line and fish all the grass or weeds you can find. The closer you get to the dam the better the grass bite is. Just sit on the weed line and chunk them frogs. If you can't get bit on Frogs try soft plastic swim baits both in the weeds and on the weed lines. If those don't work it's pot luck from there.1 point

I see that you're a new member and apparently new to the concept of concealed carry. My suggestion is that you find a nearby class for your HCP (Handgun Carry Permit). The instructor will help you find a firearm that best suits your situation. You can start at your LGS (Local Gun Store). I don't know the owner, but if you're in Lafayette, there's a LGS called R Tac. Go by and chat with the owner/clerk. The staff in gun stores are typically knowledgeable and helpful... not high pressure at all. They'll recommend a class for you. When our house was broken into shortly after moving to Tennessee 20 years ago, I found an HCP class immediately and signed up that weekend. I didn't even have a handgun. I borrowed one from the instructor. That was a good move because I learned a lot in the class. I mean, a lot. It's not like on TV. A good instructor will cover the law, what you shouldn't do, what you should do when stopped in a car, etc. It's well worth the investment.1 point

There's a marked difference between "the best" and a "good quality" pistol. The former is an opinion of skeptical validity, and the latter is a wide ranging choice of options that meet the criteria. The right gun is one you're comfortable with (grip, weight, maintenance), will stay proficient with, and will carry with you. That could be any number of options, so you need to shoot different guns until you find one that strikes your fancy.1 point

Yep, for every person the answer is different. You have to take into consideration your size, body type, how you will carry, how you dress, activities, possible threats, etc and so on. What may be perfect for one person could be completely wrong for someone else. I have three guns that I primarily carry depending on the situation and what I'm doing. A Colt lightweight Commander .45acp, a Colt Mustang XSP .380 and a S&W 642 .38 Special. And occasionally, something completely different depending on the circumstances. There is no pat answer.1 point

I think that you could ask 10 people that question and get 10 different answers. For me, after buying and trying a bunch of different ones, I fell in love with the Kimber Micro 9. It just does it for me.1 point

A permit has nothing to do with buying a firearm.1 point

Very well said, hipower . . . Buford's mode of teaching was confrontational and funny, but never belittling. There was "method in his madness" as in his provocation he always reminded people that getting angry is one thing, but pulling out a gun is another and it was our responsibility to keep anger and firearms separate. He did a great job of teaching the liability that comes with carrying a firearm.1 point

Oh I wear a mask when out cavorting about the city. Sam's and Kroger primarily, with a few medical visits thrown in for good measure. But that doesn't mean that I have fully accepted all that has been said, reported, and espoused by high media, medical, and government officials...on either side of this. There is truth, as well as falsehood out here; both in the virus, its severity, and its source. And until all is known, if ever. I remain with my scepticism, my sarcasm, and my poor attempts at humor intact; in all its splendor and fervor. And lastly, Raoul, in reference to your last statement...you do realize where you are and whom you deal with here, don't you?1 point

Buck up guys. Take the political posturing out of it. It's some bad s h ite for sure. All you can do is take care of yourself and those who matter to you. I'm locking this thread because we've already talked about this. Your permit coupled with your exuberance doesn't give you ground to go defend anything. And, I'd argue if you go there - you're putting even personal defense in jeopardy because you went and sought it out. But besides that - "Antifa" the conservative media's favorite new boogeyman now that Hillary has gone away isn't coming to Murfreesboro or Brentwood or Lebanon or Smyrna or anywhere else. You know why? Because this "Antifa is coming to the suburbs" is an organized disinformation campaign being perpetrated by some known actors on social media.1 point

Pricing an AK is easy. Gun-broker/Armslist or check the classifieds on the AK Forum or the AK Files, but you'll need to check the sold ads. Yes, people ask a lot more for things they think they can, Childer's receivers included. What they sell for is a different matter. Don't mean much on a personal build. As to your response to Magiccarpetrides, a new dude with 15post would be better off to receive info or PM a trusted source than posting an obvious forum tactic of newbies to sell stuff without a proper add. Magic has been around awhile and knows pricing and sales far better than you could imagine. As well as how to be part of a forum community.1 point

Lol man just become a benefactor and list it for sale ...it’s very obvious what your doing here. I think it’s like $35 for 6 months. Who knows maybe you can turn a buck off several builds if your so inclined but please do it the right way. Also as to value an unknown person building one in Knoxville isn’t going to bring as much as an established company...I personally wouldn’t buy a home built AK unless I knew the person who built it had some actual gunsmith credentials (like Xtriggerman on here).1 point

I'm going to throw out a very unpopular opinion: 2A Supporters are either a silent majority or a vocal minority, and if it's the former of the two... the silent majority is screwing the rest of us. The media panders hard left but that's because the hard left is a hell of a vocal group. If the 2A supporters, regardless of political affiliation, were vocal enough and large enough of a group, the media would likely pander that direction. The media needs money and their money comes from advertising ... when it isn't coming from George Soros. They'll follow whichever group generates the most revenue for them. If we're actually just a vocal minority, it's time for us to start adopting minority tactics. One of the most effective minority tactics is to be an inconvenient pain in the establishment's ass until it can't ignore them anymore.1 point

Maybe we should restrict gun stores to certain parts of town. They could upset someone. No signs that say guns and dare not advertise anywhere. You guys shouldn't post anything on Facebook about hunting. Someone could see your guns or a poor dead deer. We could lose the right to hunt. God forbid some gun hater gets an account on TGO. we should shut the site down so we don't offend anyone.1 point

Pro Tip: Don't fall for the lies of no-line / progressie bifocal lenses. They are much harder to use with a red dot sight and maintain a crisp clear dot. Use traditional bifocals with distinct single-vision areas.1 point
-
It all depends on your shooting eye AND the red dot. If you have an astigmatism as I do, then some red dots will be a big fuzzy blur, others not so much. I still prefer iron sights just because, but red dots sure are nice when you get used to them.1 point

It's arguably superior to both. It will kill pretty much anything a .308 will with less recoil and a flatter trajectory, especially past 500 yards. It is not more accurate, but is easier to shoot accurately at extended range because it remains supersonic another 500-600 yards after the .308 has gone sub. It was designed to duplicate the trajectory of the .300 Win Mag without rearranging the shooter's spine. It succeeded and the military took note. Go to a long range shooting match that doesn't require 5.56 or .308 and you will see plenty of 6.5s. Go to the Bass Pro ammo section and you might find about as many 6.5 CM SKUs as you will .308. It's not just another fad or designer cartridge and it has already taken a chunk of the .308's market share. The 6.5 CM is here to stay.1 point

Got this one last Saturday, he didn't gobble a bit. I seen him working a oak flat and slipped ahead of him. Waited for over a hr before he got into shooting range. It's been the toughest season I've had in awhile. These public landmountain birds haven't gobbled worth a flip this year. Opening of the season they was gobbling good but after that cold snap and rain it shut them up. 46.5in Length 22lb 11in Beard 1.375 Spurs1 point
