There's already evidence that shelter in place may be working in New York City. They've gone from hospitalizations doubling every 2 days to hospitalizations doubling every 4.7 days in less than a week. We're still a long way from the peak there - but that's good news no matter how you look at it.9 points

I'd say more likely than possible. They're already upset their perfect government society is being shown as overwhelmed in handling this as all the rest of us. They're in full damage control mode to save face.5 points

I’d also be looking into an LLC and a gigantic liability insurance policy, along with the price of business licenses and taxes.4 points

I thought the same as I watched everyone go OOS. it was a WTH moment. Maybe more so on the TP. The reason it strikes us so odd, is I doubt folks here tend to be the ones that get drawn into mass hysteria or panics. But there is one group it made sense for that I would not lump in with the crazies. It has proven both smart and legitimate. High volume shooters of rounds they choose not to reload. Buying as a hedge for forward looking price protection. Those who recognized the level of hysteria right away and did not underestimate human nature. If we were thinking the above (I did), we underestimated both. And their rational isn't one of panic hoarding or reselling, but managing finances around their hobby over a period of time. For example, just saw SG, who I am sure most of us love, is asking $250 for 1k rounds of 9mm Blazer brass that just a couple weeks ago they were getting $160 or $170. Midway just put up a bunch of Winchester 5.56 at a similar premium. How smart a hedge will end up being based how quick the volume recovery is. While the ammo manufacturers said they are adding production, I doubt it will be sustained to create the level of glut based on their recent lumps and leanings from the post Sandy hook glut and manage volumes a bit more this time. Not to mention we dont have the anti-gun threats of that time frame that kept buying pressure up.3 points

Chill. Nothing is moving quickly because everyone is as jiggy as you are. None of us can begin to guess how the system will work right now. You would be better off in gathering 30 to 60 days of items so you could shelter in place. Just my .02.3 points

Many people turn hobbies into businesses. If they didn’t we wouldn’t have very many small businesses these days. There is going to be a whole lot more involved in “manufacturing” than just scoring the appropriate FFL. Think capital and the previously mentioned liability.2 points

I said from the beginning, it won't take too many truck drivers being pulled off the road for medical reasons to feel the pinch. They enjoy a bit of isolation in their jobs, but by design, have to interact with a lot of folks in different areas. It's also a good coincidence that gas prices are keeping low enough to let the industry have some relief on that fixed cost for a bit during this crisis.2 points

Maybe not, but the .308, just like in the ammo world, far surpasses anything else up there.2 points

https://www.tn.gov/safety/tdoshscovid19.html As of yesterday DL facilities were still processing handgun permits. I would assume that means the office that they go to is still working; but you know what happens when you assume. “The requirement that new Tennessee residents obtaining a Tennessee driver license within 30 days of becoming a resident has been extended to June 17, 2020” No extensions on that requirement are posted for handgun permits. I don’t know if that’s because they haven’t addressed it yet, or if they will. You can have a gun in your car without a permit. So its anyone’s guess if it became an issue out of your car. As a former cop I would say that would depend on how and why the gun became an issue.2 points

In your home? You might want to check your local ordinances first. Both for a business and with the obvious regulations and precautions for explosives. That ended my pursuit right there for an 01 FFL. The city of Murfreesboro does not allow an FFL in a residence. Therefore, the BATF won’t issue one. I would think your product liability insurance for an 06 FFL would be pretty high, but that’s just a guess.2 points

No, I think you're absolutely correct. Look at NY City, simply population density has caused major spread. Total cases are 20,000 with total deaths 208, thats 1.4%. The major differences mainly being age distribution of population and overall health. Italy has some top notch hospitals but the age distribution being skewed to the elderly overwhelmed their capabilities. If we can continue to limit the spread and increase hospital capacity we will have managed this better than anyone expected2 points

No, that would just be another typical flu season. I'll give you this though, these numbers are on top of the flu numbers, so yea many deaths. Only time will tell, but once this is over, like H1N1, these deaths will be lost in memory next year. I mean, I lived through the whole H1N1 timeframe and can't recall all those deaths, how can I forget that over 12,000 people died that year...oh yea, it wasn't repeated on every news, radio, and print 24/7.2 points

I appreciate everybody here for responding and I am glad to hear they are still doing the processing. I know other states like Washington, North Carolina, etc stopped doing processing of permits (in NC, some of counties shut down). I think it is advantageous (only in this situaiton) it is a state agency doing the processing, that just happens to manage Homeland Security, so they won't be shutting down operations. Of course, nobody can truly know what the outcome will be. Well, it sounds like even during good times I would still be waiting. I was just reviewing some other posts on the forum in the past where people said their license came in like 9 days. But, I have read others who said it took weeks. Yeah, I know that TN allows you to carry a gun in your car and I have 3 other permits (that are valid, but probably not in TN anymore since I am a resident now), so I kind of slacked on it, as I have bad back and neck (partially disabled) and waiting for 6 hours in the DMV just wasn't something that was so easy along with juggling a 70hr/work week. It took 2 attempts (failed the eye exam and had to go to an optometrist where I passed) and 8 hours of waiting just to get my drivers license. But after pandemic, the wait was reduced to 30 minutes and I give kudos to the fingerprinting place in Mt JUliet that got me in for an immediate appointment. Anyway, I'll just sit back and wait and hope for the best.. Ohh,, I am good for about 180 days there or more, even on Toilet paper .. I grew up in the country and just always had the habit of stocking up on food and items. I was one of the people who was hit by the tornado, as I live along the freeway near Lebanon area. It just barely whipped by apartment complex, only ripping off some of our metal gates, throwing chairs and bbq grills everywhere and nearly giving me a heart attack as me and my neighbors prayed in my bathtub as it roared by and shook our building. So, I am already was in apocalyptic survival mode. Driving down Leeville Pike today with all the destruction and empty roads felt like I was in a walking dead episode or post-WWIII movie. I got an ammo shipment coming tomorrow that I waited weeks before the price gouging. Didn't need any ammo, but figured, what the heck , always could use some more. RIght now fighting with a business that is struggling because of the pandemic really hit our business bad (as our customers are not going to work and not paying us as much) and I already was in a dying software career. Now , trying to train myself to see if I can find more work and hoping my decent credit can get me a loan in these rough times. Thanks again for the input everyone gave me and I am praying for everyone's safety through all these challenges we are facing here.1 point

I'm late to the party. But we stumbled upon his motorcade while we were heading in to town, it was pretty awesome to see. Marine 1 and 2 were here as well as 3 incredible Ospreys. There were Secret Service and probably every LEO in Putnam County. I honestly didn't know we had so many bike officers either. We got to watch him leave for town. Then we found a spot close to CHS where they landed and got to see the motorcade come back and then the 5 aircraft take off. Pretty awesome. They just made everyone get in their vehicles while the motorcade was arriving and during takeoff, but it was a pretty awesome sight.1 point

I can think of about a million different reasons why this is a bad idea. I’m pretty sure every regulator and insurance person will take the same view. Especially if you have neighbors who live in distances measured in anything less than “over in the next holler. I’m not trying to be rude, (I’m known for crazy and dumb ideas) but I am pretty sure you’re going to find regulatory and financial roadblocks at every turn in attempting to do this out of your home.1 point

No, that number doesn’t include contractors or 1099 folks. Several state systems spent good portions of the week down last week due to crashing from demand. For reference - and this number wasn’t wholly representative then either - peak Great Recession saw about 8 million out of work - but that was accumulated over more than a year.1 point

Well we knew that was coming regardless. Tell people to stay home, total calamity is reduce, people say "see it wasn't that big of a deal". Its the same concept. News outlets only get to be "right" so rarely they're gonna shout from the rooftops when they get the chance1 point

For that range, i would buy the best barrel i could afford and a good free float handguard... Truth be known, a the trigger may mean more than a " great " barrel at that range. We used to shoot the turnbolt guns quite a bit... Rem 222 and 223... The cartridge is plenty accurate... The trigger n barrel means somethin at that range... leroy...1 point

Background checks screeched to a halt for 2 ffls here in my area last week. After a little digging they said it was related to the shutdown in Nashville, mayor orders, etc. Whatever it was must have only been temporary. My last renewal took almost a month and that was with nothing going on.1 point

I would like to go on record to say that I am in the "this is total BS" camp. I don't know why this has been spun so out of proportion, and all over the world at that. Sure, I know this is a dangerous virus, and that it has been killing folks, but it is still not rising to the Flu numbers or the H1N1, and this happens every dang year. There is NEVER a rush to get TP or other supplies each year, so what makes this one so special? My guess is that the MSM, worldwide apparently, and TPTB have decided a crisis was due, and this was as good as any. I am not saying that you should not take precautions, especially if you are in one of the high risk categories, but nothing more than your standard precautions should be more than adequate. Flu: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm 2019-2020 390,000 – 710,000 Hospitalizations 23,000 – 59,000 Deaths in the US H1N1: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html Since they found it in 09' (2009 through 2018) https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/burden-of-h1n1.html 936,000 Hospitalizations 75,000 Deaths in the US COVID-19 (as of 4pm Yesterday) https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/cases-in-us.html Total cases: 44,183 Total deaths: 544 Jurisdictions reporting cases: 54 (50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and US Virgin Islands)1 point

There's not a medical professional alive that's going to go along with that - it's against their oath. I get it that people are frustrated. As a small business owner - I hope that I've still got a viable business when this thing is done - and that I can last long enough to make it to that point. The two are certainly connected - and there's a balance. There's no universe in which you can focus on one to the exclusion of the other. It's not even a real argument. I'm certain there are people who look at New York and California and think, "that's what they get for living on top of each other in these big cities. It won't be that bad here." But, I'd encourage you to look at what's happening in Lander, Wyoming right now. When this does hit rural America -whose hospitals have already been closed due to "streamlining" - the impact is going to be huge. You're not going to restart the economy until this thing is under control. Full stop. And, until the political class quits playing their zero sum games - the impact to both virus mitigation and the economy multiply each day.1 point

No matter how much he is hated; it does matter what the President of the United States says. If he has the support of Medical professionals; people will go along with what he says. Will asking people to go back to work cause the economy to recover? Not completely, people won’t be vacationing, traveling, or flying; but they may have an income. I’m a 65 year old former smoker. So I’m high risk. I am retired and work part time from home. Would I be willing to go to work and risk getting a virus that kills ~1% of those infected, if it would help keep our economy from collapsing? Absolutely. My wife woks for a food company and their employees are “essential” and are working. My wife is putting herself at risk to help. I couldn’t ask that of her and me not be willing to do it.1 point

Morality aside - it doesn’t matter what Trump says. The economy isn’t going to open back up until this is under control. It’s not like the economy is just some magic machine - it takes people. And if the people get sick and are dying - they’re not going to work. And, it’s a demand shock that our economy can’t really handle regardless. 80% of American GDP is consumer spending. Well, what happens when no one is buying? I get it that Trump is upset that six of his hotels are closed. I get it that the airlines are upset that no one is flying. I get it that the cruise companies (that are largely foreign flagged to bypass labor laws) are upset no one is taking their vacations. But, if I told you that right now you could fly to New York, take a chartered bus across the city, stay in a nice hotel, have dinner in a fancy restaurant, then get on a cruise the next day and spend the next two weeks touring all the ports in Italy - and you can do it for $20/person. Would you do it? That’s the heart of our problem right now. When you can’t sell at any price - it doesn’t matter what the political class says. People aren’t buying. And, they’re not going to change that behavior until this pandemic is under control.1 point

Conspiracy Theories, Coronavirus, TGO and YOU For as long as I can remember, TGO has never really provided "safe waters" for people who want to preach conspiracy theories and rile-up the masses. There are plenty of places for that sort of thing on the Internet and yes sometimes the conspiracy enthusiasts (or nuts, if you so prefer) are proven right in the end. But since there are so many other places for it and since we feel that the ravings of fringe believers tends to bring down the property value, we prefer that our members engage in discussions based in reality. Lately the moderators have begun removing posts fanning the flames of conspiracy around the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic. Generally speaking, I am supportive of their actions. Here's why: Priorities First and foremost, we have a present problem to deal with so let's start by putting our focus there. We have members who are and have been personally affected by COVID-19 and chances are this is just the beginning. If we are going to invest our mental and emotional energies into something, let's invest them in encouraging, supporting and helping our own community. Respect Again, we know that we already have members of TGO affected by this pandemic. So far they (and we) have been fortunate and it's turned out well. That could change. We don't want that to happen, but the statistical projections indicate that by the time the dust settles none of us will have many degrees of separation from someone that died as a result of the virus. I just think maybe it's a little disrespectful to the people currently fighting this virus and eventually to those who lose the battle for us to sit around and imagineer boogeymen behind a virus that science currently says evolved naturally. Stay In Your Lane, Bro Following right in behind the matter of respect is the simple fact that unless you're an educated, degreed, certified ass-kicking virologist, geneticist, research scientist, or have data from a respected source that is... you should probably stay in your lane. Remember the Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020? That happened because social media said there was a shortage of toilet paper. So the people believed it, reacted like scared sheep, and ran right over the edge of the cliff with arms full of Charmin. There's no reason for us to allow the next big social media fear-fest to start with or take root on TGO. We can control what happens here, so our intent is to manage it so that there's at least one place you can visit online that doesn't feel like the lunatics are running the asylum. You're welcome for that. Even if you don't appreciate it right now. And So What If That Conspiracy Theory Is Accurate? The President, love him or hate him, has already said that there are going to be consequences on the other side of this current situation for the way that China mishandled this. Even if they didn't bio-engineer it, their government hid the outbreak from the world until it was busting out of their borders. So far the Prez has done everything he's said he would do... right or wrong... so we can be pretty confident that the US isn't going to just let this slide. So, even if the latest conspiracy theory is accurate... you and I can't do a thing about it. Establishing and maintaining a military to preserve our sovereignty, the strength of our borders, and the security of our interests is the one thing that the government should be doing. It's maybe the only reason the government should exist if you ask some. But they are equipped to do something about it. Not us. Not even Chuck Norris. Let's let the government handle the boogeyman. And if they need our input on that, there will be an appropriate time to tell our elected representatives what we'd like to see done. And I'm sure that our actual scientists will be following up on all credible leads that help them expedite a treatment or vaccine for COVID-19. So if that takes them back to a secret lair somewhere in Communist China where they're having unprotected sex with bats while eating live frogs... so be it. In the meantime, let's stay grounded in reality here. It's scary enough and it requires our full attention.1 point
