Conspiracy Theories, Coronavirus, TGO and YOU For as long as I can remember, TGO has never really provided "safe waters" for people who want to preach conspiracy theories and rile-up the masses. There are plenty of places for that sort of thing on the Internet and yes sometimes the conspiracy enthusiasts (or nuts, if you so prefer) are proven right in the end. But since there are so many other places for it and since we feel that the ravings of fringe believers tends to bring down the property value, we prefer that our members engage in discussions based in reality. Lately the moderators have begun removing posts fanning the flames of conspiracy around the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic. Generally speaking, I am supportive of their actions. Here's why: Priorities First and foremost, we have a present problem to deal with so let's start by putting our focus there. We have members who are and have been personally affected by COVID-19 and chances are this is just the beginning. If we are going to invest our mental and emotional energies into something, let's invest them in encouraging, supporting and helping our own community. Respect Again, we know that we already have members of TGO affected by this pandemic. So far they (and we) have been fortunate and it's turned out well. That could change. We don't want that to happen, but the statistical projections indicate that by the time the dust settles none of us will have many degrees of separation from someone that died as a result of the virus. I just think maybe it's a little disrespectful to the people currently fighting this virus and eventually to those who lose the battle for us to sit around and imagineer boogeymen behind a virus that science currently says evolved naturally. Stay In Your Lane, Bro Following right in behind the matter of respect is the simple fact that unless you're an educated, degreed, certified ass-kicking virologist, geneticist, research scientist, or have data from a respected source that is... you should probably stay in your lane. Remember the Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020? That happened because social media said there was a shortage of toilet paper. So the people believed it, reacted like scared sheep, and ran right over the edge of the cliff with arms full of Charmin. There's no reason for us to allow the next big social media fear-fest to start with or take root on TGO. We can control what happens here, so our intent is to manage it so that there's at least one place you can visit online that doesn't feel like the lunatics are running the asylum. You're welcome for that. Even if you don't appreciate it right now. And So What If That Conspiracy Theory Is Accurate? The President, love him or hate him, has already said that there are going to be consequences on the other side of this current situation for the way that China mishandled this. Even if they didn't bio-engineer it, their government hid the outbreak from the world until it was busting out of their borders. So far the Prez has done everything he's said he would do... right or wrong... so we can be pretty confident that the US isn't going to just let this slide. So, even if the latest conspiracy theory is accurate... you and I can't do a thing about it. Establishing and maintaining a military to preserve our sovereignty, the strength of our borders, and the security of our interests is the one thing that the government should be doing. It's maybe the only reason the government should exist if you ask some. But they are equipped to do something about it. Not us. Not even Chuck Norris. Let's let the government handle the boogeyman. And if they need our input on that, there will be an appropriate time to tell our elected representatives what we'd like to see done. And I'm sure that our actual scientists will be following up on all credible leads that help them expedite a treatment or vaccine for COVID-19. So if that takes them back to a secret lair somewhere in Communist China where they're having unprotected sex with bats while eating live frogs... so be it. In the meantime, let's stay grounded in reality here. It's scary enough and it requires our full attention.10 points

Appalling that so few understand basic economics. If it wasn't for the ability to charge higher prices in times of scarcity, there would not be anything available for those who truly need it. We laugh at those who are desperately buying a gun and ammo when they suddenly feel danger. But if you TRULY need a gun and don't have one, wouldn't you be willing to pay a lot more than when there is no threat? The high prices also serve as a strong lesson that it is much cheaper to be prepared for an emergency than having to react and pay the higher prices.3 points

I remember a time when there was no such thing as bottled water except maybe tonic water or seltzer to make cocktails with until Perrier came along. Then everyone had to start buying water they’re already paying for at home or getting free anywhere they go, lol. It really wasn’t all that long ago. It’s amazing we survived.3 points

Yeah, Fauci should know better than to tell the truth. Trump's litany of ignorant opining, misleading disinformation, political and press attacks, and outright lies over the last two weeks (too many to mention) have reached a new low, as they now directly affect the odds of mass death in my country. But of course I understand it's still mostly Obama's fault. - OS2 points

I just called my friend. Other than feeling achy and the occasional cough, she sounds back to normal. That's amazing considering that she was thinking about going to ER 24 hours ago. I think this speaks volumes for taking supplements to keep your immune system strong, which she and I do.2 points

J. Paul Getty, when asked when he first knew that he was a billionaire, replied "if you can count your millions, you're not a billionaire". You can paraphrase that to "if you can count your ammo, you don't have enough ..."1 point

I have a Gen 1 716 DMR. I like it very much. Especially the 4 settings for the gas piston, something that went to 2 settings (I think) on the second generation platform. I believe the first generation also has a barrel a couple of inches longer than the gen 2 model. Before getting this 716 I had cut my teeth on various AR-10 platforms trying to find a reliable host for my suppressor. Rock River Arms LAR was no good for me. The Adams Arms .308 had troubles. DPMS Super SASS was also far from flawless when suppressed. Although I cannot say that the 716 has not been 100% flawless suppressed, it has been darn close. I take it out to 600 yards regularly and 850 yards occasionally. It is a heavy beast. I always use if from a bench or prone. I can't imagine toting this gun around for long on a sling and shooting for long unsupported standing.1 point

I regularly shoot distances 400 to > 1000 yards with everything from heavy 5.56 to .50. I will say that bang for buck and less punishing recoil .308 and 6.5cm are my two go too rounds. The question I would ask is how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? Accuracy is consistency so while a larger sexier caliber might seem better on paper, does it matter at the end of the day if you end up teaching yourself to flinch everytime you pull the trigger. Personally I would start with a proven platform such as a weatherby / Rem 700, etc and see what you do up to 400. Then make a new set of decisions from there. You can take an action and re-barrel. You can adjust stock, glass bed, play with optics. It's been my experience that most decent factory rifles can outperform there owners especially while learning the ins and outs of "longer then usual distance" shooting.1 point

Update: She was swabbed at Vanderbilt Walk In Clinic in Belle Meade at 8:30 this morning and told results will be in 2-3 days. I strongly suspect she will test positive. On the same subject, she is MUCH better this morning. We both take supplements to boost immune system and she upped her dosage when she started to get symptoms.1 point

This crap is unreal ! I still dont understand how the virus thing triggered this mess. I was at a local gun store picking up a part and a man comes in walks straight to the counter and asks if they had AR15 lowers. The guy then said "give me 2" . He didnt look at them or take his time to check them out or anything. He just flopped out his money and started the paperwork. WIth me , I take my time and check out the lower to see if it looks good and look for flaws and such. But this dude just scarfed 2 up and did the paperwork. Then a lady comes in and does the same thing. Funny thing is that there were lotsof .22lr ammo and it wasnt touched at all.1 point

I still can't wrap my head around the people carrying out cases and cases of bottled water...I mean if the commies were invading or aliens had come down...or the Russians/China EMP'd our powergrid ….we really are our own worst enemy.1 point

I've got more ammo than I'll discuss openly, so none of this caught me off guard. I picked up some more before the prices really went through the roof, just because I'd like to attend a class next month. I say this to qualify the statement that my anger toward CTD doesn't come from me needing something they are gouging for now. No, my anger for them comes from the fact that they are rapists taking advantage of the naive folks who didn't know this sort of thing happens and didn't know to prepare. Not every shooter today was even a gun owner in 2012. Bear that in mind.1 point

BAHAHAHA this is amazingly funny. Now here's the thing I also think Cheaper than Dirt are a$$holes...BUT...when they were selling 9mm for 7.99 a box and making sh*t (along with lots of other vendors)...were we lining up to take advantage and support these stores suffering from oversupply and low margins? NO...its obvious to me that even some people on this very site learned nothing from any of the other "scares"...so I can't blame any business for making profit and margin while they can. They aren't selling toilet paper, food, or medicine so if the sheep are stupid enough to let their wallets get slaughtered let them.1 point

Gee, all ti took was a world wide pandemic to make them understand they're responsible for their own safety. As for me, I could arm a small army if it came to it. I learned from the Obama years.1 point

I really thought Obama had taught us to be self sufficient. If you're not prepared I have no sympathy.1 point

Unless you can’t hit the broad side of a barn while you are standing in it, or plan on firing a lot of warning shots; I fail to see the need for thousands of rounds of ammo for a SHTF scenario. Don’t get me wrong, I have thousands of rounds, but they are for range trips.1 point
