This one gun (rifle) debate has raged on in lots of internet forums. There is no right answer without other parameters. Is it full-on SHTF or Martial Law? Are you Urban or Rural? Is it open combat with other people/groups or are you just hunting for food? What is your chance of get more parts and ammo? Are you mobile? If so, are you on foot? The gun that is best not knowing any answers from above is the one you have, have ammo for, and are proficient with. My old .303 Enfield would probably serve me better than a SAW if I am out in a rural area. There I would probably take my .308 bolt or Savage 24 .30-.30 over 20ga break action though. Just easier to find ammo and I can hunt anything with the 24 at distances I encounter in East TN. My 10.5 inch barrel AR9 style pistol might be better if I am moving building to building in a urban environment. Especially if I need to move on foot because my sidearm and it would share ammo. Less weight or more ammo depending on load out. Hi cap mags also help if I encounter trouble. Yes, a rifle caliber would be better. An AR-15 in.223 could be good if I thought I needed to pick up more parts along the way. I just dont love .223. A bit less likely would be an AR-10. I like .308 better, but the weight is a big step up. As a compromise, an AK would do well if it is tuned and accurate. Spraying and praying is only good in movies. Again, no "right" answer here. Any of them are better than a pointy stick. Really focus less on what gun and more on improving skills that can apply across a good spectrum. Having the gun is one thing, but if you don't know how to use it well it will probably just end up in someone else's hands.3 points

Well my favorite gun is a 16” Marlin 1895 with a scout scope mount. I actually like that type of setup.3 points

All of the personalities, no, but the main contributors, yes. I have only met three members face-to-face, but I have a good sense of many of the active posters on this site. I know which ones that I would get along with in person, and which ones that I would not get along with in person. That comes with time reading copious posts. We should always keep in mind that writing only conveys 7% of our communication skills. The remaining 97% is from voice-inflections, facial expressions, and body language. Without that 97% it's very easy to convey the wrong message - particularly if it's a "Joke."2 points

S&W 629 Classic 6" 44Mag. I've wanted a .44 mag for 30 years or more but it was hard to spend that much money for something I would not carry or shoot that much. Now I don't know why I waited so long.2 points

Not a fan of any type of off body carry. Tried it and committing to having 100% hands on is tough. Set it down, get distracted, it can be gone or some kind and polite person will pick it up and hand it to you. Coupled with the puzzled expression of weight to size. The exception would be my wife's purse. When I need deep concealment, it's pocket or ankle, understanding the limitations of the my sub compact handgun and drawstroke.1 point

I would look at it as what kind of territory are you most likely be surviving in. If its urban streets and within buildings, a 9mm hi cap carbine is not that bad a choice, A more rural area and the SKS walks away with survivability. The only reason I say 9mm is theres lots and lots of ammo for them laying around small and compact as the ammo is and personally, SHTF more than likely means war time FCG's that can put a lot of lead out quickly and accurately. I’ve thought about this for many years. Ultimately, it’s better to pick a rifle caliber, for longer range and knockdown power. The next question is which Rifle style, semi, bolt or lever. I have a lot more trigger time on a semi-auto, so for me that might be a better option, in the AR flavor. Next, is caliber. I could go with .223, a variety of 6.5 offerings, a 300BO or a .308. I’d narrow that down, quickly to .223 or a .308, because those two caliber are very easy to find. Looking at what I have at the moment, I’d probably select .223, because that’s what I have at the present.1 point

peej has spoken a " Great Truth " here... Rifles is rifles (... Think 200 yds out...)... Pistols and pistol carbines is shorter... Settle this issue in your mind first... My take is to carry a good pistol and a good rifle... That bein said, ya need to pick the flavor. I tend to like the turnbolt " Scout Rifles " ALA Jeff Cooper and Ruger... Its always hard to beat a 308, abeit Brother Dave's AR10 or a bolt gun... Again, you pick the flavor... Nothin beats a real marksman at long range... Nothin beats a 308 to about 800 yards or so... 800 yards is a real long way here in Tennessee. Heres hopin this helps. leroy1 point

.380 is better than a spitball through a straw. .380 is a terrible round. It’s just a 9MM short and is plagued with problems of operating guns of any size. I had a guy pull a .380 round out of his side and hand it to me after he had been shot. Could that have happened with another round? Maybe, but it didn’t and I saw it first hand in a real world shooting. So my opinion, based on that, and having shot them into various materials, formed my opinion they are pretty much worthless. Now…lets be fair. Shot placement. If you are one of the people that can, under probably the biggest adrenalin rush you have ever experienced, place a shot where any round would immediately stop the person; caliber is a non-issue for you. Or if you think “Modern Ammunition” figures into this; you might want to check it out. My goal in a shooting against an armed assailant is to make him unwilling or unable to fire his weapon. I don’t think a .380 is a good round for that.1 point

Just got back to hunting a few years ago after lots of family and career time. I hunted with Dad back in December. Only 2 days I got to go this year. Took my first deer ever. Spent all the years as a kid staring at empty woods during deer season. Had this one before 9 am. Saw 2 bucks and a doe before 7:45 the second day but held off since both about the same size as this one. I hoped they would go around past Dad. They did not. Not a prize winner, but after what felt like hours grunting him around where I coud get a clear view and shot, I wasn't gonna pass him up. Let's call him a 3 pointer. lol1 point

Got my personal best this afternoon at 3:00. It was raining steady with 12-14mph winds so the rain was falling diagonal across the field. After passing countless bucks, I could not pass this one up. 4.5 yr old chocolate rack 9 pointer. I’m sure blessed today and so thankful. All the work this year was worth this two minute long encounter with this big feller.1 point

Went to my first Daytona 500 41 years ago when I was 9. Was able to get autographs from all the greats, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, Bobby and Donnie Allison and many others. Loved the sport and always went to several races every year. The past few years NASCAR has slowly lost me. I believe it started when Earnhardt died. I will DVR and watch the 500 today because it's in my DNA but probably wont watch much the rest of the year. Heck watching the truck race and couldn't believe the "we are going to throw a caution if we go green for 20 minutes" rule. Just not the same IMHO.1 point

In the scenarios you guys train for, do you plan on using backup burgers or mustard? What if your primary mustard goes down? Weak side reload? Do you default to tap and rack regardless, or try to visually diagnose the failure to feed and proceed accordingly?0 points
