I have a friend who converted one to 9mm. I believe he swapped barrels and magazines and tuned the extractor. He may have replaced the extractor. i think .38 Super initially had a bad reputation for accuracy due to headspacing off its rim instead of the case mouth. The .38 Super loaded to “major” power factor (bullet weight x velocity = at least 165,000) is popular in USPSA/IPSC Open division, but is losing ground to the 9mm. Rules were changed years ago to allow shooting major with 9mm. Yes, it can easily be done, but is a specialized load in a specialized gun (same as loading .38 Super major). Most off-the-shelf .38 Super won’t make major. The 9mm has the advantage of easily obtained brass. You can always identify .38 Super shooters at a match—they are the ones looking at the ground immediately after shooting a stage.4 points

Think of it as a 9mm on steroids. 130gr .356 dia. FMJ bullet @ 1200-1300 fps. I'm a fan of the 38 Super and currently own 4 of them. Colt invented it in 1929 as a better option against steel auto bodies and early bulletproof vests. It became extremely popular in Latin American countries where owning guns in military calibers was forbidden. I believe it was in the 1960s that IPSC competitors discovered that in the 1911 the 38 Super could be pumped up to meet Major Power factor with less, recoil and faster follow up shots over the .45acp. Plus you can get a couple more of them in the gun. It became a serious cartridge in competitive shooting sports and still is. The .38 Super is an outstanding defensive cartridge. However its also always been kind of a niche cartridge. So most ammo makers only offer a few choices in this caliber. But excellent defensive ammo does exist. BTW: Major Power Factor ammo (1400-1500 fps) is readily available. Cost is a bit high, but if you reload, its no big deal. Can't absolutely swear to it, but I believe a 38 Super can easily be converted to a 9mm with a simple barrel swap. But I wouldn't do it. The .38 Super is the superior round.4 points

I have a Costco bighorn and recently switched out the electronic lock to a mechanical. I was apprehensive knowing zero about the subject, but it was very easy and bolted right up. I had to drill one hole (non-critical) and cut the dial spindle to length. Lock was working okay but just didn’t have confidence it would last. I used a S&G 6730 from Amazon everything was included. dont hesitate doing it if you have been contemplating it. Not sure how it is on other safes, but the Costco bighorn was butter...2 points

I'm a grandpa 38 super affectionado. Got an o!d 70 series Colt in the safe... They are great to shoot, but ya need a barrel that headspaces on the case mouth ALA 9mm and 45 Auto... The original Colts spaced (... as others have noted...) on a tiny rim on the original supers... I'm thinkin that Colt finally fixed the problem sometime in the 80 s, but I ain't sure... My 70 series has the old barrel... Now in honored retirement... leroy...2 points

There will be a number of states that will honor the Tennessee Concealed Permit. There will be some who will only honor it for those 21 or older. Then there will be some that will only honor the Tennessee Enhanced. Time will tell and www.handgunlaw.us is looking into this and hoping in the future to have a listing of states that will honor the TN Concealed. I will tell you that the info TN puts out is pretty good. https://www.tn.gov/safety/tnhp/handgun/apply.html There is a problem On their reciprocity listing though. They state that WV doesn't honor their permit if they are under 21 which is true. But they also state WV only honors Resident permits. This is false. That was stricken from WV statutes a dozen years ago. This is my home state and I have talked directly to those in WV who are in charge of this in WV. What the permit holders of TN need to do if they want to know what states will honor the Concealed Permit is contact your Reps and Sen in the state and have them pass a bill or even just talk to the TN Highway Patrol and have Them contact every state that honors TN and ask them if they will honor the Concealed Permit. Idaho does this every year for their two year permit system. This is something that benefits Tennessee Residents who have the Concealed Permit. Government is there to assist the Citizens when they need help so this should be something they help with. They are also in position to get something in writing from the other states that will answer a lot of questions. Stay Safe, Gary Slider Co-Owner/Researcher www.handgunlaw.us2 points

Have my brother-in-laws Dad's Colt in 38 super in my gun safe awaiting me to work up some loads for it. Have 500 pcs of Starline brass, need to get her done. Nice nickel Colt, will be passed on to me when brother-in-law passes, no body on his side of family wanted it. Sad for them.2 points

I hope your not considering this as a profession. My younger son was an armed security guard for a couple of years after he came home from Iraq. The hours suck, the pay sucks, you get absolutely no respect from anybody and the whole world looks down on just another stupid rent-a-cop. Only the few folks at the very top of the company make a decent living at it. You're not a cop. You have no real authority, can't arrest anybody, yet you're expected to walk right into trouble. Not to mention you're expected to put your life on the line protecting somebody else's stuff. Its a crappy job.2 points

I think you are right for thinking people should know the law. All the laws that will impact their family and their freedom, not just the gun laws and the use of force laws; my experience is that too many don’t. I also think that a person should have professional handgun training. But if I agree that the government should require it; I no longer believe in the 2nd amendment. Therefore, I believe it is the responsibility of the individual to get that training, and not the responsibility of the state to see that they do.1 point

The replacement stock is only a minor hit. A couple of hundred at most. But that cut barrel is a real killer. For a Garand to have the barrel cut and still function, more than just the barrel was modified. My guess would be maybe $400-500. But frankly, I wouldn't touch it. By the time you replaced the barrel, stock and whatever else is needed, you could have bought a nice original Garand.1 point

Use to but dropped TN when the Military qualification was passed that included 18-20 yo. That is the concern regarding the new CCO permit. Hopefully all states will be as diligent as Nebraska when evaluating the new permit situation. Some are likely to use it as an excuse to drop us altogether.1 point

Yes you should know that laws of other states. That is the reason www.handgunlaw.us exists. You also need to know what states honor your permit. There are states that don't put out that info. They will list states they have reciprocity with but won't list the states that honor their permit. I have been told over the years at least 100 times that I list states X honoring state Y and that is false as state Y doesn't have an agreement with state X. Washington State AG states on his website: To gather this information, we send out an annual survey to each state. As we obtain updated responses, we revise the list of reciprocal states and their laws. They only list 10 states they have reciprocity with but 25 states honor the Washington permit. They don't tell their residents that. The CA AG doesn't even tell California residents that 24 other states honor the CA perm,it. There are a lot more like that, TN should do the same for their residents as they are in position to get something in writing. Many states are making a fortune on what they charge to get a permit they can at least tell those who are supporting their gun divisions who honors that permit. Stay Safe, Gary Slider1 point

Do nothing. The handgun is on loan for the next 70 years and then becomes an estate transfer. From the ATFE web page above, this is legal. Don't go looking to wake the bear. One day that might be the only gun you get to keep.1 point

I'd buy it. .38 Super runs about the same speed and muzzle energy as a .357 in some loading and comes in a 1911 package. Call DW, but as stated, you can likely have a 9mm barrel fitted and have a dual caliber gun.1 point

It is up to the other states, not TN to determine if the CCP is accepted in their state. So there is no way for someone with the state of TN to say it’s only for use in TN. The states on that map that are in tan have stated that they will only accept the enhanced. The ones in blue accept the enhanced and either do or have not explicitly stated they do not accept the CCP. It’s going to take a while for it all to shake out where it will be accepted nationwide. It isn’t straightforward, it isn’t clear, but it IS par for the course with our state legislature.1 point

I'll take that as a compliment! I interviewed for a job in Murfreesboro once, (It was a great long weekend, I think I ate barbecue 6 times in 4 days.) and my wife and I got married in Gatlinburg (tried to spend more time out of town than in). If I had to leave MN, TN would be really near the top of the list. Plus, the classifieds on this site are awesome!1 point

Are there some states that are accepting our HCP that won’t accept our CCP? My guess will be that he won’t hit any stumbling blocks, but that he will pay the full amount. But that just a WAG. Let us know when he finds out.1 point

These trucks ain't exactly Cadillacs when they aren't under load so I doubt people buy them and drive them for the giggles of it. When my wife and I decided not to camp anymore and sell our 5th wheel, the first thing I did was go trade my 1 ton for a 1/2 ton. Now I can drive around town comfortably.1 point

I'll ask others with more knowledge to chime in on this, but wasn't the 38 Super a pretty popular competition round some years ago? In my personal experience, I find it a fun round to shoot. Very soft in a 1911. As a defensive round, I'll let others comment; but I don't want to be shot with it. As TominMN said, it's a high energy round, and pretty darn flat shooting for accuracy. I've had a couple of 1911s in the 38 Super over my long sordid life and still like them. I have a couple of Colts for the round. Prize possessions for me. I was fortunate enough several years ago to get a couple of cases at a reasonable price. I hoard it like gold! lol1 point

Well, let me put it this way: It's better than a .40... Oh! Seriously though, .38 super has enough energy for what you're thinking if you can find rounds loaded with suitable projectiles. In terms of economy, you're right about never finding anything that's truly cheap. You'd have to reload, or make friends with someone you're willing to entrust your fingers, eyes, and life to (and who's willing to take on the responsibility). And, if it would be an acceptable substitute, @CBOW, check the STI 2011 in the classifieds here.1 point

I really have got to stop visiting this thread. I get wrapped up in such great music! I may not agree with all the picks, but all are awesome! I have such love of almost all types of music...it's almost impossible to pick any as a favorite. Tonight, I've visited Home Free, Jackson Browne, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Jeffe Lynne and Simon and Garfunkle. Leonard Cohen and Patsy Cline. And of course the killer of all... Eric's "No Tears in Heaven!" And as usual, have lost well over an hour. What am I listening to? Everything posted here and more. There just isn't enough time for it all to be heard, especially when I replay one that tugs at my Heart. Like Mike+the Mechanics, George STrait and George Jones. So much beauty in it all.1 point

You couldn't be criminally prosecuted for carrying at work, unless your employer specifically meets "posting" requirements. You could be fired for carrying, you could technically even be fired because they thought you carried in the past, or even because you had a Glock poster in your office or posted a photo of you shooting at the range to Instagram. The kicker...is that you likely would never find out "why" they fired you, other than the fact that they fired you. That is what "At will" means. In my opinion, that's exactly how it should be in the United States. A private company should be able to conduct business however it wishes, in my opinion.1 point
-
Tennessee is an “employment at will” state; they don’t need a reason to fire you. Unless you have an employment contact that spells that out. Carrying a gun in this state is a privilege you buy from the state; not a right. So no, you won’t find anything in the law to protect you from getting fired for violating your companies policies. That statute is a requirement for arrest under criminal law. Your company is not subject to it.1 point

In TN, you can be fired for breaking company rules. Unless you are seeking to push the issue, and ready to lose your job, I would not do it. I work on Fort Campbell, and am also disarmed, but I like my job so..1 point

I'm going with a long bayonet with sheath. By looking at the other rifles in the pic they all have them and I'm certain he wouldn't want to feel left out. By looking at how they attach to the rifle the curvature would be facing the photographer which is why we cant see it.1 point

I moved here (I live in Jefferson City) from Massachusetts in September. Not a lark, my wife and I spent a year and a half choosing where to go, eastern Tennessee was the choice for MANY reasons. We're glad we're here, we're not going anywhere. I told her "when I die, have me cremated and sprinkled on the hill in back." Anyway... I know people personally that now live in Virginia. One of them has been going to "Lobby Day" for years. She's active politically and articulate, and when she tells me they're concerned about what will happen when the legislators come back I believe her. Libs WILL create laws and enforce them as they see fit, regardless of constitutionality. It takes YEARS to get a case to SCOTUS, even assuming they decide to hear it. In MA the federal assault weapon ban never sunsetted, MA copies and pasted it and made it state law. For years we just lived with it. Then on 7/20/16 our (theirs now!) Attorney General "reinterpreted the law and decided that "copies" or "substantially similar" firearms were not to be sold or possessed and were felonies. Those in possession were essentially "felons in waiting". Gun shops statewide stopped selling them. Private sales became expensive, a "pre 7/20 ban" AR essentially sold at a premium. There were no prosecutions, but it became increasingly difficult to buy a rifle. Many vendors won't ship ANYTHING to MA. Hats, tshirts, nada. Forget about complete or even 80% lowers. Some companies won't ship SPRINGS. So it happens, burying your head in the sand almost guarantees it will. Once the law is in place fighting it becomes harder and more expensive. This #### needs to be stopped BEFORE it happens, not "fixed" later. Who would have thought 20 years ago we'd be arguing about bathrooms and wedding cakes? We are now. You think that the landscape will be recognizable 20 years from now? Lol. Go watch "Idiocracy". Virginia is the canary in the coal mine.1 point
-
Yeah, two thoughts. The chances of it causing an issue? Not very high. The cost of going to a local (in TN) FFL and performing a transfer? $30.00 +=$10.00. The peace of mind knowing that there is no legal issue at all? 100% priceless.1 point

I have enabled a new feature in our software that essentially grants everyone limited moderator powers when it comes to reporting content that goes against our community guidelines. This new feature is "Auto Moderation" and is currently set so that if TWO OR MORE PEOPLE report content that falls into one of the following categories... Spam Abusive Content Non-Benefactor Advertising Benefactor Posting in the Wrong Area The content will be automatically hidden until a moderator has a chance to address it. This allows us to keep TGO clean and acknowledges the facts that our best defense has long been our members and that our tireless, hard-working, and insanely dedicated team of volunteer moderators can't be everywhere at once and definitely can't be online 24/7. I will tweak the automation that makes this work behind the scenes to ensure that it isn't used unfairly.1 point

I bought a AR Pistol for a trunk gun. In case I needed more firepower and had a chance to get to it. I wasn’t about to be the test dummy for the “Its not a stock; it’s a Brace case.” So I didn’t put one on. It would be almost impossible to use open sights without a stock. So I went with a red dot. The whole idea was a loser. An AR without a stock is worthless. It’s good as a conversation piece; but that’s it. I wondered who came up with this dumb azz idea; then I remembered it was me. I’m going to sell this bad idea when I get around to it, and just buy me a cheap AR Carbine. I’ll put a scope on it and put this Vortex Venom on a handgun where it belongs. Not often do I admit I’m wrong. (Cause I’m usually not.)1 point
