  1. Happy New Year to all.

  2. It is my opinion if a church is going to have a safety team, the other church goers should be talked to also(train the audience). These church goers, most of them, ducked down, which is a good thing. It gave a clearer sight picture of the shooter plus got themselves out of the line of sight (fire) of the security team and shooter. After training our safety team, at my church, you would be surprised how many people did not even know the street address of our church building. How can one call 911 and not even know the address. I had 2 guys that were designated 911 callers on our team. My idea for 2 was one would be there on the day we needed him. This incident took place over a 6 second time period. How many of us would be ready and have lethal shots fired that quick. Common guys, you can't argue with success. True some of the guys made mistakes by, what appeared to be muzzling innocent church goers, but it has been my experience, we don't really see the sight angels they were looking at from one camera angle. Those "volunteers" did great in protecting their church family. It takes special men to go to the sound of gunfire, and apparently we see at least 6 men, mostly mature men, doing that. One can nit pick this to the death, but look at it for what it is. A sad day for these people, but the best training film in a church setting, that has ever been filmed and shown to the public in real time. Mr Wilson is to be commended for his excellent actions. Those two poor volunteers, at almost point blank range, suffered greatly and in reality had very little chance of success coming from behind the curve in their own defense. I told my members that most times, when you respond, you draw the perps attention away from his intended targets, to yourself, and you need to understand that fact. This shooter reacted to the two volunteers, and had to deal with them, before he could continue his original purpose, what ever that was. Mr Wilson hit him at the perfect time causing him to react and miss his next intended target. Guys, that is textbook on what a safety team is put in place for. Fighting, for sure gun fighting, is nasty business and not antiseptic. Our team never faced a deadly confrontation, but had to deal with 11 bad situations, one just like this guy coming in with the hoody on and causing a disturbance. Ours turned out to be non life threatening, but still it happened and had to be dealt with. This hoodie guy was the real deal. We need to be praying for these good people, and even for Mr Wilson, because most likely hew ill need those prayers in the future, while dealing with taking another's life, even though he was totally in the right. This won't happen until he has settled down and has to begin assessing his actions in the darkness of his thoughts. PTSD is very real even if you are right, to most, not all, but most. I say well done, for a very serious situation and the security team brought this awful situation to an quick end. It could have been much worse, even though it is bad. Edited to add: Mr Wilson will need to adjust because he will now begin to live with "The Mark of Cain Syndrome."

  3. I think it was Massad Ayoob who said something like "shooting competitions are not gunfights, but gunfights are shooting competitions." Competitive shooting has its uses.

  4. I love them, but I don’t carry one anymore; although a lot of folks do. A good one in .45ACP is an excellent example of high quality all metal guns. The weight vs. round count just doesn’t compare to a Tupperware gun. Their application, for me, is they are excellent target guns and range toys. I’ve never owned one in 9mm based on all the folks I see that have problems with the 9mm being able to operate the heavier gun. Of course, some don’t have problems. As far as holsters go; I’m all leather, all the time. But of course, they cost more.

  5. I gotta say that we are in the time of awesomeness if that is even a word. All kinds of 9mm's and .22LR's coming out and a load of choices. It's almost a fun as the late 80's and early 90's when you could get an Ak for $200 still packed in cosmoline like new and SKS's for $80 or less. We need to cherish these times. I'm afraid they wont come around again.

  8. I retired from 30 years of service with the State of Ohio (Corrections Officer) on Halloween and moved into a new house just east of the Sevierville city limits. Still learning when to avoid the peak tourist traffic, but am learning the back ways around pretty well. Love the mountain views. One of the great things is having a newly re-opened indoor range about 3/4 of a mile from my house. I am looking for an outdoor range where I can shoot muzzleloaders. I am aware of the Gatlinburg Sportsmans Club, but don't really want to pay for another range membership fee just to burn black powder occasionally. Anyone know of a place in or around Sevier County?

  12. If can can put together the .bat file, just use Windows Task Scheduler to execute it whenever you want. I would also recommend robocopy rather than a simple copy command as is far more powerful.

  13. We shoot in South Knox County and have never had an issue. My concern is the noise bothering the neighbors when we have a class with a full day of shooting. Neighbors have been neighborly, my sis-in-law is beloved in the valley...

  14. Kydex is faster to draw from for me than leather, I guess like all leather it needs to be broken in but still retain the gun, were Kydex is usually pre molded to already fit, but also remember don't be a cheapskate when buying either make sure they are of good quality. I've got a J&M Kydex Holster think it ran $60 and I also have a Raven OWB that was $70, both hold the guns nice and tight but are easy to draw from, now my leather ones cost me a lot more, I have and Andrews HY-Bird that is full Shark Hide OWB, Milt Sparks 55bn OWB, and a couple of others. A good Gun Belt is also needed and make sure it fits the loops snugly I prefer a 1.5" width belt when carrying either IWB(inside the waistband) or OWB. I tend to stay away from Paddle Holsters unless they have a good retention to stay put when drawing your gun( it's funny but I've seen and had it happen to me when practicing with a cheap one the whole thing comes out) do some searches and find out what works best for you.

  15. If you are clearing a house, you do not have the upper hand, especially if you are doing it alone. If I really thought someone was in my house; I’m not going hunting. When you aren’t sure…..wait. But I have a dog; so, I don’t have to. The biggest mistake I have personally seen people make in engaging an armed intruder is underestimating the enemy. Too many people think they will scare off an intruder. And most of the time they are right; sometimes they aren’t, and they die. I have also seen when the burglar kicked in a door thinking the homeowners were gone. The bad guy was on the floor at the door dying when I got there. Have a plan.

  16. With all due respect to HiPoint - I don't know that anybody makes ugly pistols quite as reliably as Ruger. Nice to see another 5.7 option, though.

  19. Agree. While I know it's a "shooting game", the few times I've shot IPDA matches it's showed me how much more time based and movement shooting I need to do. Every time I've done it, I come away more humble than when I arrive.

  26. Aw man, don't go there. On another forum the video had barely come out when a bunch of Internet "experts" started critiquing everything the security team did wrong. Muzzle sweeps, poor movement, lack of cover etc. Bottom line is the BG was stopped as soon as he got started. No further injuries. Nobody was shot by accident. Sure, they probably could have done better, but there's no point in bringing it up now. This was a win!

  33. Buy the gun you want, and drop it off at a friends house. A few days later they come by with the gun and say "Thanks for loaning me the gun, sorry I kept it so long." The wife will just think it's a gun you already had.

  34. Just buy a Smith M&P 15-22 and be done with it. Not worth the price difference to buy an upper, new bolt, and magazines. Just have two guns. Here you go...with free shipping. https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/168616
