  1. Yep, A heart attack and triple bypass at age 46 made me realize it can happen at any time. . That's why I retired on the very first day I was eligible.

  2. Civil Unrest would have been a great term to stick on the Patriot Militia at Lexington and Concord. I get there are some wackjob mouth breathers in these militias, but government is supposed to make laws that protect liberty and protect individual rights, not protect government.

  3. This should be watched closely. I think it’s very dangerous. I also think that this is the first of many attempts, by those on the left, to hamper any potential or perceived uprisings. This bill’s Patron is Louise Locus. She’s held this seat since 1992. She knows the ins and outs of VA politics. I suspect this bill will be passed during the next session.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving to all. I have a lot to be thankful for. I think we take for granted this beautiful, FREE country we live in. Let us not forget the vets that paid for this free country. A huge thank you to all vets!!

  7. I am right where I should be on this Thanksgiving. With my family at home. We have much to be thankful for. I also want to take a moment to be thankful for this wonderful country we live in and those in our military past and present that sacrifice for all of us. Thank you to you all!

  8. I have a great fondness for expensive guns and expensive glass. At the end of the day, they won’t do any better in my hands than any budget rifle and optic bundle from Walmart. Modern manufacturing techniques have made mass produced budget guns the equal of the custom guns from the days of yore. The high level guns require a high level shooter to see the differences they bring to the table on target. I’m not a high level shooter, and I don’t have the time available to become one, but I do love my fancy guns. I’m so fancy, you already know...

  9. My duty had me spending a lot of time over several years on the butt of custom built bolt guns with high end glass. Most all were .308. I did have a personal rifle at the time which was a budget Remington "Sportsman" in .270. My buddy and I bedded the original stock and floated the barrel and this was my deer rifle. It really cranked our armorer when my budget Remington matched groups of our custom duty rifles. Eventually I no longer was on the bolt guns for work and sold my Remington. Recently I finally decided to pick up another bolt rifle. I really didn't need to spend a ton of money so after talking around I saw an ad on Armslist that was nearby a couple of weeks ago. I picked up a Ruger American .308 with a 3x9 for just under three bills and am very pleased with it. There is probably no more than a half inch or less difference in three round groups from the groups I had on my previous rifles. In my opinion only, unless you are doing some serious competitive shooting, a Ruger American, Savage, Mossberg, Howa, Remington 783 etc. are fine for hunting and pleasure shooting. Granted there are smoother, nicer finish, sexier rifles out there for more money if that is what you want, but these will certainly get the job done. But then I am also pretty fond of Taurus revolvers, product may settle during shipping.

  10. They say there are two kinds of gun owners. Those who have had a ND and those who will.

  11. My Rock Island pistol finally arrived last week. Took her to the range and fed a few rounds through it. I had no FTEs or FTFs in 100 rounds. The stock magazine worked good. I also bought a WC magazine just in case the stock mag had issues. This is my first .45. One day I hope to get an American made 1911 but for now this is good for me. It is the Ultra FS series.

  15. This is a key phrase here. " intending to employ such training for use in, or in furtherance of, a civil disorder" No mention about training for self defense. Looks to me like its aimed at the various extreme militia groups out there. Virginia got many of those? But then again, if it passes, it'll mean whatever they decide it means. Abuse of this will be easy.

  17. I've got a friend who put a round into his closet wall then called me asking how he could get rid of "that gunsmoke smell" before his wife found out. He swears the gun, a Glock 17, slam fired when he released the slide to chamber a round. I checked the gun thoroughly and couldn't find any evidence that the striker safety or its spring were bad but he still swears it to this day. Point being, it happens. Always keep them pointed in a direction that won't cause harm or injury should something "happen" while cleaning, clearing, stowing, etc.

  21. If the gun doesn’t repeat; no amount of money spent on a scope will help. However, if the gun is quality; the more you spend on a scope; the better experience you will have. But that doesn’t mean a low cost scope won’t put you on target on a deer. Plenty of $200 scopes are helping hunters take deer. What bothers me is that there are guys out there that can hit targets with open sights as accurately as many of us with high dollar scopes.

  22. I make this point frequently, though I disagree a bit about the glass. I think most people see a difference (and so would benefit) upgrading from the package optic into the $300 range, and often even from that into glass in the $400-$500 range. (Just regular optics here, not talking about anything with a lit retical or tactical whatnots.) Together with something like a Ruger American or Savage Axis type rifle, I think that's about the best use of budget for most shooters. I'm sure we don't know the half of it!

  27. Yes...but she looks good doing it! Went away and then had to come back and comment on this again. lol Slightly off from the original intent here, but...do you notice how clean and classy she looks? Even while giving that little 50's sweet and sassy smile? What's happened to a big percentage of the female population these days? To me, they are beginning to look...well...sort of low class to almost "lady of the evening" styles. I see the classic beauty of the 40's and 50's and just wonder what the hell happened. Ok, yes. I am officially an old man with thoughts and values that are mostly outdated.

  28. Update: So.. I guess Dan Wesson 1911s are known to have the wrong front sight once in a while. I contacted them, they asked for some targets and the slide. I got it back in about 2 weeks. It shoots right where I point it now. Happy camper.

  31. This isn't the politics section and that has no relevance in this thread. To be honest Dave, I don't care what you think. You could disappear from this forum tomorrow and I'd barely notice. Much like a fart in the wind. This forum is barely hanging on, aside from the classifieds which account for 90% of the posts here. God forbid I try to generate some conversation here over a topic I thought was relevant and interesting. Why you're trying to take it off topic with your response is anyone's guess. I do believe he was railroaded. The ATF raided his home based on charges that were false and it was determined their search warrant was illegal. The ONLY reason he was even able to be charged is because he had a minuscule amount of plant that makes people hungry and lazy. He then had a small fortune of firearms stolen. So yes, I do believe that is the definition of government over reach. It's not like they suspected him or running a drug operation and raided him for that reason. If that were the case I'd have less sympathy.

  32. Another plus to always having one in the chamber. Every maintenance procedure starts with clearing your weapon, and always start that on step one, even if you feel you've performed it previously. Good on you for reminding us of what can happen when you don't. As to the SDs , vs NDs, I've always been very careful about holstering my gun, but it made me even more so when this story came out, then this news report added additional things to look for. https://www.itstactical.com/warcom/firearms/safety-warning-worn-leather-holsters-can-cause-accidental-discharges/ https://youtu.be/FrJMQupYxaw

  33. Just so I'm clear, you're good with the ATF raiding a guys farm, ruining his life, and stealing nearly half a million dollars over 1/2 once of the devils lettuce? That's not even why they raided his place. That was just the ONLY thing they were able to pin on him after what was clearly a b.s warrant to begin with.

  34. Always a concern/fear of mine; besides being embarrassing it can be tragic. I always preach handle a gun as if it is a poisonous snake. Deserves full attention and complete focus at all times. A momentary loss of focus can have deadly consequences.

  35. I transfer a loaded (in the chamber) gun from my nightstand holster to my IWB holster, and vice versa, daily. I fear a ND at that time. Especially when inserting into the IWB as I dont have a good visual of the gun going in due to the position (4-5 o'clock) that I carry. There have been a few occasions when my t-shirt got caught inside the holster! YIKES! Fortunately, no ND, but talk about scary.

  36. A good reminder. It happened because you pulled the trigger, as many will point out. It can also happen without you pulling the trigger. Which they like to deny. We can’t be careful enough with a loaded firearm. I’m OCD about having an ND or a AD and have been handling guns for over 50 years. I still am concerned it could happen to me. I’ve had one AD, but the gun was pointed at a target when it happened.

  39. I'm about to turn 69. I sold most of my guns 4 years ago and used the money to help me upgrade my old house to a new one on the lake. I don't get around as well anymore and figured I should spend the rest of my days sitting on a boat dock. So far, I have not regretted my decision. I don't have a son or grand kids to leave any guns to and my daughter would rather have the house on the lake. I'm just glad that I sold them before the gun market bottomed out.

  40. I went on a bit of a spree a while back...surely no coincidence it's about when I found TGO. For the vast majority of the time, my guns that sit locked up with a light coat of oil on the action. I don't regret what I have, but I surely don't have a need for more unless I get into shooting as a primary source of recreation, and that's not likely. I have enough weapons and ammo for home defense, daily carry, civil breakdown, and more importantly, can be mobile with it all if needs be. Maybe one day if I get a new vehicle that can secure one, I'll get a good truck gun, or a .22LR pistol (the S&W one right now looks best) for fun and to let any kids I'm around get into shooting. But as I get close to my 40s, I think the capital otherwise spent on guns and every attachment you can throw on them is better deployed to investments for my old age or misfortune.

  41. I forget who it was, but one of the major instructors once said "If you can't have your hand on the gun in one second or less, its useless". I'm a believer in that philosophy.

  43. You are correct, but from what I have read in 2015 Springfield started making all 1911 in the USA from USA parts. Prior to 2015 you had to look for a certain mark on the frame to get a US made 1911 I think they were marked NM but don't hold me to this, it's just what I have read wandering around the net. I have a 10+ year old Springfield Loaded Government that is US made and it's a tack driver and eats anything I have fed it. I can't speak for all of them but my loaded was as tight as any of the high end (Dan Wesson, Wilson, etc.) pistols that I looked at when I bought it. The only problem I have ever had out of it was on break in I over lubed it because of how tight the tolerance were and after a couple mags of some really cheap ammo it got so dirty it gummed it up a little but cleaned it at the range lightly oiled it and it has functioned flawlessly ever since. It is still tight and functions flawlessly so IMO you can't go wrong, just look them over and decide for yourself.
