  1. If Wal-Mart really cared about the gun issue, they would remove all guns and all ammo from their stores. The modification of their inventory and sales policies and prohibition on open carry are just an effort to look like they are doing something without really doing anything of true consequence. What is truly troublesome is their foray into firearms politics as evidenced by the company's letter to the White House encouraging stronger background checks and a return to the Assault Weapons Ban. They need to stay in their lane.

  2. Wow. I did my apprenticeship on VW aircooled flat fours when I was a kid (sonofa.......30 years ago) Sooooper simple to work on. The only mechanical thing that you absolutely HAVE to check, literally every time you drive it, is the oil level. The oil pan is very wide, very long & very, very shallow. The gap between 'full' & 'top up' is tiny. If it's a hair below 'minimum' on the stick, it WILL seize & throw a rod. I couldn't get The Wife to understand that & replaced 2 1300s & a 1600 Super motor before I sold her '75 out from under her. She honest to God killed 2 in 6 months. Heater exchange elements tend to crap out before anything else (assuming U.S. Spec vee-dubs are the same as UK spec) but they're a simple job to replace. Which engine's in the ragtop you're looking at? I ask, because the cases ate slightly stronger on the 1200 than the 13 or 16s. They're slower by quite a bit than the 1600, but there's not a chance in hell I'd buy a 13 over a 12. If you ever need to work on it, it's much easier to drop the motor out than work around the body. 8 bolts to the bell housing, fuel line, alternator/generator (I don't recall the changeover year, sorry) wiring & throttle cables & you're basically good to go. Jack the motor off the mounts, pull it back, drop it down then pick the chassis up & walk it forward. I reckon it'd take me a couple of hours these days, but when I was doing it for a living, me & Vince (Jesus... I just remembered his name!) had it down to about a half hour to do a complete motor swap!

  3. I have said this a couple times and I will say it once more. I have never and plan to never open carry a firearm period. I even go out of my way to amke sure I never print when I do carry. I don't want any bad guy/badguys to have a clue I am armed. That is to my advantage, not theirs. As far any stores of any size that chose to stop Open Carry in thier business it is their privledge to do that. I would very much rather see a No Open Carry sign on a business then a Gun Buster sign on a door preventing me from trading there. I honestly think these store and businesses are trying to work with gun owners if you stop and think about it. They are not taking the easy way out and just putting up gun buster signs. People talking about boy cotting certain grocery stores. Ok what happens when the rest of them follow suit and either go No OC or No Guns period. You better hope you live on a farm and can grow all your food!!! Myself, I am will to accept the decision of Krogers. I avoid Walmart like the plague! Would only go there in an emergency!!! I have been doing business with Walgreens most of my adult life and don't plan on changing anytime soon and I wear my gun in there every time I go and no one knows it but me. I think those businesses that have gone to CC only are trying to compromise with gun owners and I respect them for that...............JMHO

  5. I think one of the things that we miss about the VW in these modern times - is that it was a car that was built so that the common owner could tinker with it. And, since that tinkering was innate in so many germans, its simplicity was very much a feature. We're sort of conditioned to our modern cars that go tens of thousands of miles with little more than an oil change here and there. But, the ability for a common man to fix pretty much everything on his own car with a simple manual is underrated.

  8. That’s not true, that’s ridiculous. Cops don’t randomly pick people to enforce weapons confiscations on; most cops are good people and would not do that. Most red flag laws are the result of family members that can’t handle their own family problems. Cops can’t hold court on the street; they are charged with removing the threat as best they can; that’s what they do. The lawyers, the courts, and the family can then battle it out. Someone has to call the Police and make a complaint, if you have a problem with it your problem is with that person; not the Police. Police are not family problem solvers; they are law enforcement Officers. But they will always go look at the situation and do the best they can. Sometimes when family members call cops because someone is threatening suicide or homicide; things go wrong and people get killed. Sometimes it’s the person making the threats, sometimes it’s the cops, sometimes it’s the family members, and sometimes its innocent citizens going about their daily routine. Threats of violence is not protected speech. Online threats have not been taken seriously in the past. I suspect you are about to see that change. Calls from witnesses that see these threats online will be looked at. If someone needs to go interview that person, or arrest them for their threats; I assume that will happen. If it makes it though the responding Officers, the Detectives, the DA, and a preliminary hearing; their Peers will decide if they were threats or not. I agree that the "domestic terrorist" stuff is ridiculous. It’s like “hate crime” laws; they aren’t necessary and are more politics than anything. The guy in Missouri had intent to cause panic; he committed a crime. But he was an idiot and his crime was disorderly conduct. He was charged with terrorism to make an example. Will he be convicted of that? Of course not he will be offered a plea to plead guilty to a misdemeanor like disorderly conduct and it will be over. That’s what happens to idiots. We have laws against murder, threatening people with violence, pulling guns on people, etc. We can arrest violent people without violating anyone’s rights and without needing any new laws. What we need is either new prisons or clear out the non-violent offenders in the ones we have if we must make room. People that threaten to kill other people don't need to be walking free.

  9. My dad had an MGB GT model when I was a kid. Some of my earliest memories are of riding around in the back of that thing listening to Abraxas on 8-track. It was just like this one: I bet your dad's hand built one is a fun car.

  10. My father has an MGB, which is similar to a Midget. He built it all himself and has a shelf full of car show trophies it won. It has an aluminum Range Rover v8, Chevy 5 speed manual transmission, and a Dana 44 rear end. It also has 4 wheel disc brakes. It is a fun car.

  11. Law enforcement hasn’t seemed to care about scooping people up and ruining the lives of innocent people for red flag nonsense, real or not. They control the narrative and can label anyone a “domestic terrorist”. I’m not worried about Apaches or an insurgency. I’m worried about what’s already happening to people who post the wrong meme, say the wrong thing online, or just own too many of whatever they want to take.

  14. I dated a girl once who drove an old Karmann Ghia. That thing was loads of fun. Personally, if I was going to go out and buy an old car - and it wasn’t going to be another old FJ40, it would probably be an old MG Midget.

  18. And the final mental test: establishing bona fides. In the morning safety briefing shooters were told if they saw a man in a red hat, they should approach him and make up a reasonably natural sounding sentence using the words "licorice" and "red" to establish their bona fides and good things will happen. Two of these guys (for redundancy) were located between stages 6 and 7 (or 4 and 5 if doing the 5k), and if you established your bona fides correctly they simply said "Get in the back of the truck" and gave you a ride to the next stage. More than half the competitors walked/ran right by them and never engaged. Some even talked to them directly, but failed to notice the red hats or remember the correct words.

  20. We shop almost exclusively at Aldi. Their new decision won't stop me from shopping there. If I tried to boycott every store that didn't fully support the 2A I'm not sure where that would leave. I save enough money at Aldi that I just don't care.

  21. That's awesome. I bet the four wheel disc brakes make a big difference. I rode in an old TR6 not too long ago. I don't know if all cars have just gotten bigger - but man I felt tiny on the highway.

  22. What about an older Jeep Wrangler? You'll still have a slow, unreliable, convertible but at least you'll be able to take it places the Bug won't go. I've always wanted a Wrangler. I believe they are very easy to work on at least.

  24. Bottom line, they are all a private business and have the right to post. I am happy they are simply posting for CC only.... could have been much worse. OC is not a preventative tactic, in fact it is ignorant and reckless and sets up an opportunity for someone to steal and or shoot a place up. What I am opposed to is the political posturing of these companies.

  31. Dave, When Walmart made the announcement that they were stopping selling certain ammo and pistols. I thought, “Big deal. I don’t care.” They have the right to choose what they sell. Then I read about them asking customer’s not to open carry. While that doesn’t mean anything in Tennessee because you need a handgun carry permit to carry open or concealed, there are a lot of states where they have constitutional carry. So it does directly affect legal carry in other states. Furthermore, Walmart is working on distributing new signage so in TN, it’ll likely be a legal requirement to restrict open carry in their stores. What really pushed me over the line is finding out that, “Walmart is a charter member of the Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership, organized by Walmart and Everytown for Gun Safety.” References: https://corporate.walmart.com/policies https://www.grnewsletters.com/archive/tfa/TFA-Walmart-announces-partnership-with-Evertown-for-Gun-Safety-and-Michael-Bloomberg-675227801.html 'Everytown for Gun Safety' was founded by Michael Bloomberg and has a subsidiary ‘Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America’. Do you really want any of your money going to them? If everyone takes the attitudes: It won’t matter. It’d cost too much to shop elsewhere. It’s too convenient. Then you are right, it won’t matter. But if enough firearms owners make a stand and vote with their wallet, then it will make a difference in Walmart’s bottom line. I choose not to support businesses that by their actions (or support of other groups) that are anti-second amendment.

  32. How can a bright red convertible Bug not be fun? I'm all ears. Whatdda ya got? I'd love to have another 67 Chevy II 2 door hardtop like I had in high school, but my wife is a tightazz. I also saw a 65 Belvedere and a Model T Ford for sale at a local car show that momentarily piqued my interest this past weekend, so I am open for suggestions. She's out on a motorcycle until the kids are old enough to be independent.

I've heard of several in the 109 bridge area, which isn't but about 3-4 miles from my house straight line. http://imgur.com/gallery/b0pkkSs

  34. I reckon Greg is old enough to appreciate the fun in the simplicity and basicness of a VW. The only complaint I ever had with them is the stick shift is a bit on the short side. A couple of more inches taller would be nice. I drove a ‘70 Type III (Squareback) in college. Would love to have it back. Was a great car that didn’t leak oil. Dave, I had a deadhead sticker on it.

  38. It’s about chipping away at our rights. It doesn’t have anything to do with “hey look at me”. It’s more about the 2A and “shall not be infringed”. It gets some of us worked up because it’s moving the front line closer. Today’s open carry is tomorrow’s CARRY. I personally don’t open carry in public, but it sure is nice knowing that if my T-shirt rides up, I’m still legal.

  39. I really don't mind if a store asks people to not "open" carry. All they are asking us to do is cover them up, not leave them outside. We as gun owners need to respect those (other customers) that are not comfortable with guns. I know several people that just don't like them but they also don't think they need to keep others from owning them. It's simply not there thing and the more we try to force our views on those in the middle of the issue we simply push them further to the other side. I have to admit that when I see people open carry in public or even not make much of an effort to conceal their gun, I wonder what kind of a fool is this and who is he trying to impress. Sorry if that offends anyone but that's just how I see it. I truly believe more harm than good comes from that kind of behavior.
