  1. I have a friend who is an independent agent. He shops several companies for the best rate. Over a period of years, I've bought from two or three different companies through him. I've yet to file a claim, but as far as rates, this seems to be a good way to keep them low.

  2. So life has been crazy busy this last year with my wife starting her fellowship at Vanderbilt Medical Center and the birth of our first child. What a wirlwind, so I have t been near as active here, but through all that my wife passed her board certification and is now a Board Certified Pathologist. She interviewed and has a contract with a physician group in Knoxville. Those of you that know me know we lived in Knoxville for many years, and as we have loved the past few years in Nashville we are excited to be heading back. We have a contract pending on our house here and currently searching on Knoxville. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we embark on yet another adventure and look forward to being an East Tennesean again.

  3. My suggestion would be to shop around every couple years regardless of who you have now. One of the biggest mistakes I made years ago was assuming I was with the best because I never had an issue and the rate appeared to be reasonable. How can you sit and say you have the best out there if you blindly pay year to year without seeing what else is out there ? That extends on many things beyond insurance as well.

  4. I've been with Farm Bureau for quite a while since their rates have been reasonable at least in my case. Throughout the years, low drama on the claims I've had for both auto and homeowners. They've always worked things out to my satisfaction.

  7. It seems that Dick's Sporting Goods bad decision just keeps piling up on them. Dick's Lost $150 Million Good! They deserve it! I've said before that the store is properly named.

  8. Good topic for a thread. I think we have all thought about switching at one time or another to save money. I’ve been with State Farm for 48 years. Over those years I’ve had 2 or 3 vehicle claims and 2 or 3 home owners claims. I’ve never had any drama; they just pay it and we move on. I know I could get lower costs, but I’ve seen so many stories of people either having a bunch of drama to collect or the companies telling them some things are covered, that they thought were.

  9. No water heaters above the first floor and no washers and dryers above the first floor either if at all possible...I have had other family members with similar experiences....water ain't no joke!

  10. @xsubsailor If the water heater has to stay in the attic, think about putting a tray under it and an alarm sensor. Possibly a sump pump to empty the tray too.

  11. Call your insurance company. Water damage can be quite expensive to properly remediate. Mold starts in 36 hours or so. The last water damage I worked was 4 sheets if drywall damaged and cost over 4k to remedy.

  12. Altering or removing VIN's is a felony under Federal law. However that same law allows it under certain circumstances. Such as a scrap processor, or when repairs require the removal. If you are looking at a vehicle that is in fairly decent shape and the vin plate has been removed or messed with; its probably a stolen vehicle. A lot of vehicles have the VIN in other places besides the VIN plate.

  14. If your OS is Windows 7, use Microsoft Security Essentials. Any later version of Windows has Windows defender built in. Both work just as well as anything you'll pay $ for. The most important part of your security is YOU.

  16. Wife and I just finished watching. Very good, I didn't realize Bonnie and Clyde were idolized so much. Gun shop was very fun to watch. I noticed that the No Trespassing sign they shot with machine gun, when they showed it from the back later, looked like the bullets didn't go through just dented.

  17. A federal ban on bump stocks has gone into effect today, Tuesday, March 26, 2019. Issued by the United States Justice Department in December, the rule decided that existing prohibitions against fully automatic weapons also covered bump stocks. Those in possession of the attachments were given 90 days to turn them in or destroy them. That period ended yesterday, March 25th. If you are now found in possession of a bump stock you may face the same penalties as anyone found illegally in possession of a non-registered, non-transferable machine gun. Namely, you can be punished by fines and up to ten (10) years in prison per count. Unlike transferable machine guns sold to civilians prior to May 19, 1986, which may still legally be bought and sold by private individuals on the secondary market so long as all National Firearms Act rules are followed and the requisite Federal taxes paid (aka Tax Stamps), bump stocks owned prior to March 26, 2019, are not being grandfathered in. Private individuals may not continue to possess them and are required to have previously surrendered them to the BATFE or permanently destroy them according to guidelines provided by the BATFE. Those guidelines can be found at the following link, and an attachment of the document (current as of 03/26/2019) is also attached to this post. https://www.atf.gov/rules-and-regulations/bump-stocks/how-to-destroy We here at TGO HQ are, of course, dismayed by the way that this has developed and hope that rational, calmer minds prevail and that the US Supreme Court will strike down this ruling as the gross overreach of power that it is. Until that happens, continuing to possess one of these items is of course done at your own risk. If you have further information that you feel should be included in this thread, send me a Private Message and I will add it - subject to review. bump_fire_stocks_and_devices_destruction_diagram_12-27-18.pdf

  18. Many years ago I was fairly active in the collector car auction circuit. Typically you will need either a bank letter of credit to certify you to bid or something along the lines of a cashiers check on deposit. Well-known collectors with previous experience at this type of auction are often exempt from this requirement. I'm sure that today some sort of electronic certification is also an option. However, this company is not one of the typical collector car auction companies and may have entirely different procedures for bidder certification. In any case, you will need to register in advance, or show up sufficiently early enough before the auction start time to register. Collector car auctions almost always have a buyer's premium, if this one is 6-8% that is in the lower range of what is typical. As for inspection availability, this varies auction by auction but normally the cars will be onsite at least a day ahead of time with set times for viewing and inspection. If I were interested in attending and potentially bidding on any of these, a quick call to the auction house to clarify what their procedures are would be my first move.

  20. If you have a hot water heater in the attic, don't procrastinate on replacing it before it goes bad. I woke up with a house full of water this morning ( actually just half a house) .
