  1. Just because something is legal does not make it right.

  5. They destroy drugs because their very existence is illegal, although again, that shouldn't be. They sell off everything else. They don't destroy anything because its a source of revenue for them. Seized property auctions are common and I've attended a few. As for cars, I would prefer that cars never be crushed for any reason. I'd prefer for people to bring them back to life and give them the love they deserve. But that doesnt happen for myriad reasons. So then the cars pile up in junkyards. No-one is going to bring them back. So they are crushed. The big difference between guns and cars is that while people aren't clamoring for that Chrysler K-car, they would line up to buy even the cheapest piece of junk gun to throw in their safe. There is no shortage of buyers. So there is NO reason to destroy a gun, policy or not.

  6. I bought a 60" piece of plain white countertop and two 3-drawer kitchen cabinets at the local home store. Mounted them to the wall with a 48" light above. Instant work space. I will admit to ripping the corner off the countertop while applying a truly ridiculous amount of torque to something in my vice (think 6ft cheater bar). But I reinforced that corner with double thick plywood and it's been fine since.

  8. It depends... For most days going about my business as a private citizen I carry 1 spare G17 mag just forward of my non dominant side hip. For church security duty I carry 2. When talking about shootings in the criminal assault paradigm the odds are exponentially overwhelming that whatever happens will most likely be over one way or the other well before the ammo in my first mag is expended. Obviously the lower the capacity the more your mileage may vary. Since I am not tasked on an everyday basis with laying hands on and taking people into custody that don't want to be taken into custody there is very little on a daily basis that compels me to stay and fight. In the typical civilian encounters where someone approaches and produces a weapon to coerce you to give up your wallet or to go somewhere with them, you presenting a gun and shooting at them (whether you hit them or not) generally tends to create an unscheduled track meet with them running as fast as they can away from you .....and you often running the opposite direction...assuming they are not killed outright. The odds of you even having the time to reload before it is over is unlikely. If the "typical civilian street gunfight" last 3-4 seconds from guns coming out to end of shooting there just isn't much time for a reload in there. John Correia (Active Self Protection) has watched over 15,000 civilian gunfights on video from security cameras worldwide and I have been an attendee at the presentation he does at various training conferences. He says that in all the video he has watched there is almost never a reload accomplished before the bad guys either stop or have run away....especially when people are reloading from their pockets. We watched one of those videos in his presentation where the defender reloaded from a pocket. It took a timed 15 seconds to access the mag and complete the reload. The bad guy was probably 2 blocks away before the guy got the gun up and running again. John goes as far as to saying since he carries a hi cap gun he has stopped carrying a spare mag and carries pepper spray in its place. I have long preferred to carry both because while pepper spray can be very useful it cannot help me clear a malfunction that requires a new mag to make the gun work. So I generally carry a spare mag and pepper spray. The church security paradigm is a little different. We may well be facing a dedicated and prepared opponent for whom self preservation is not their overriding concern. In fact they probably EXPECT to die during the event. In that case it may well take more hits and they may possibly have to be delivered from much longer distances to stop him than would be likely in the typical street criminal mugging/assault . We may be engaging someone who is using cover and we might have to use gunfire to "pin him in place " while a maneuvering element closes with him to render him neutralized. That type of thing has virtually no commonality with the typical civilian use of force. So for church security duty I err on the side of caution and carry a second spare mag.

  9. That is, for the most part, like asking a cremator (someone who cremates bodies) if they'd murder their neighbor for the right price. Destroying these guns was legal. These guns were either confiscated or exchanged in one of the "buy-backs". Confiscating your neighbor's gun if asked, for the right price, encroaches upon their rights. Cremating bodies is legal. Murdering your neighbor is not. It also encroaches upon their rights.

  10. The guy who cares little and knows even less about actual US military weapons would not be interested in these to begin with. The average gun buyer would rather have a nice shiny new Kimber or Ruger 1911 than one of the CMP military 1911s and that is fine. To each his own. NO one who is buying these guns is expecting a museum piece. They all know they are US Property 1911A1s or 1911s upgraded to A1 spec that likely have seen service and were arsenal rebuilt at some point . They probably also know that some of the frames will be 80, 90,or even 100 years old at this point....the YOUNGEST ones will be 75 years old because 1944 was the last time the US military ordered 1911A1 pistols other than some tiny batches for the Marines. They also know that as they were rebuilt the armorers at the arsenals used parts from the parts bin with little care or inclination to try to match manufacturers so many will be "mixmasters" like a Colt frame and an Ithica slide. Having said that I have seen some that are matching frames and slides, so some buyers might get lucky in that regard. It will most likely have been refinished in the 1980s and now be a dull gray parkerized finish. It MIGHT have a matching upper and lower but it is just as likely to not. THAT is how REAL military 1911/1911A1s were after being turned back in after WWII. And THAT is what the people buying these are buying them for. To have a REAL US Govt Property 1911A1 that most likely went to Europe or the Pacific , to Korea or Vietnam and was reworked afterwards in case things ever got hot with the USSR. Is it the ideal carry gun? No. But I doubt ANYONE is ordering one to carry it. There are far more logical choices that are cheaper and easier to get at your local gun store for that purpose...but those guns are not US Property 1911s and to the people ordering these guns that is far more important.

I have been selling Pro-Tech knives since 2014 in that time I have seen some of the finest custom knives I could imagine, but yesterday I brokered a deal for one of my clients on what I consider one of the absolute best custom knives made, this TR3 in inlaid with 24Karet Gold and has a solid gold 1/4 ounce bullion coin inlaid it is absolutely stunning

  12. My workbench for dirty work is a very old used machinist bench. My gun work bench is two used office 2 drawer filing cabinets (the ones that are deeper and have heavy slider drawers, lots of good storage), not the cheap box store type. I added a solid core smooth door for the top. I covered the whole thing with low nap carpeting. Plenty heavy for a light duty vise.

  15. gregintenn, This probably doesn't do you any good since you're a boat ride or two into town, but you can "rent" a high end scan tool from Advance/Autozone/Oreilly for free. You give them a card they charge you a hundred bucks and refund when you return. It is, from what I understand, similar to the tool an auto shop would use. I have rented them before and they do way much more than the 4 buck scanner from ebay I also have tried. The problem with the one from Autozone is being able to effectively interpret the data. I was overwhelmed by the information it provided when I used it. Good luck.

  20. Totally up to you. You know what works in the space and how you want to use it exactly. I just like something that is good but free sometimes better than something perfect but expensive. Lol. I am a tightwad. But on the up side if you hate it later, you get a free vice to keep.

  22. I use red dots on target guns; but not carry guns. If a person is far enough away you need a sight; you probably shouldn’t be taking the shot in a parking lot with people around. I can assure you your effective range will be greatly diminished when you have an adrenalin rush pumping; especially if you are being shot at. It may not impact you but having experienced it; I smile when I see the “shot placement” comments. Shot placement is a given; knowing how you will perform under that kind of pressure is not. Handguns have their limitations; I wouldn’t add the possible problems of a red dot sight into the mix. That’s just my opinion.

  23. My woodworking and carpentry skills are virtually non-existent. I found a way to make a bench that has worked for me. If you know the location you want it, and it's not going to be moved; Nail or screw(preferable in mho) a 2x4 to the wall at the height you want and start from there. Cut the length legs you want, and cut some pieces to attach the legs to the wall. Do that for the length of table you want and you have the base you need. I planned on a lot of weight on my first work table, so I did legs every 16". A bit overbuilt, but I liked it. Now you should have a frame ready for the top. Use your material of choice, cut before attaching to the frame( I found that easier.) It may not be an exact fit, but who cares. It's a work table. If you are concerned about weight, double the top. Not really necessary in most cases, but I had some free leftovers from a workshop build my father-in-law did. So I went a bit overboard. There you are. You just built a bench. Even if you don't attach it to a wall, use the wall as a temporary brace to get started with. Yes, a bit oversimplified and not really good directions. But between u-tube vids and plain old ingenuity...you can do it. I did, so you can bet it's not that hard. Good luck with the project. And that Amazon kit you got should give you basics as well. It's not hard. I did it.

  30. Pretty much all the inexpensive scan tools are about the same. If they will read the codes and clear them, that's all the average owner needs. I've got an older C-Reader that I bought cheap at a NAPA clearance sale about 10 years ago that still works just fine for my needs. Bear in mind that knowing the code is only half the problem. It will just give you a general idea of where to look for the problem. Sometimes its a lot more complex than you think.

  31. They're all frankenguns! These are standard issue G.I. pistols that would be found in any soldier's holster or company arms room from 1911 to the present. All have been arsenal reworked at least once. These are the real deal and just what many of us actually carried. That is exactly what CMP has been saying right from the start. Where do people come up with this frankengun as an insult stuff? Do any of you really expect to find all matching pistols just like factory new? I promise you, IF there are any in there, those will be auctioned off for many thousands of dollars. You don't see anybody griping about M1 Garands or Carbines that aren't all matching. Because nobody expects them to be perfect. They are "as issued". That's what CMP sells. Why do people insist on whining about these pistols? $1050 for a Service grade, standard issue 1911A1 is a very fair price. You want a nice, shiny, brand new 1911 for less money? Fine! There's plenty of them out there. Take your pick. Those of us who have filed paperwork with CMP are buying a piece of history. If that ain't your cup of tea, well ok then. Why do those who don't "get it" feel so obligated to put them down? Just shut up already! Sheesh!

  32. I started reading the House judiciary’s amendment version of the bill today. It is full of citations from overwhelmingly anti-gun organizations and media outlets, not to mention a bullet list of all the notorious mass shooting of the last decade or so in which a background check was done or would not have mattered. God help us all when the Dems take total control in two to four years.

  33. I can’t see any war scenario that would end with peace. Hundreds of thousands if not millions dead. Infrastructure destroyed, economy destroyed, starvation, disease. I don’t want that for my kids or Grandkids. Do you think at the end of that war you would have only one country that wants to lead the world? Because if there are two; you still have a problem. Unless you mean an end to active conflict by going into the afterlife. That would happen.
