  1. Call me a racist. Chicken Fried Steak needs white gravy, plain and simple.

  2. I quit making white gravy when I found this. It tastes as good, if not better, than what I made and is a lot more healthy.

  3. This sort of thing really needs to serve as a reminder to anyone who posts on the Internet, whether on a forum or on Facebook or other social media, or talks boastfully to friends, co-workers, etc. about how they would do a certain thing if put in the position to use a gun for self-defense. The Internet has a long and fairly indelible memory. Friends and co-workers tend to say things when interviewed by the police and/or media that they think would be beneficial to you but in reality aren't. People also tend to incorrectly remember statements you made or the actual specifics of an event, and misreport those things to the officials and media as well. Anyone who hasn't read Varg Freeborn's book Violence of Mind yet needs to. You can get it here: https://amzn.to/2LD991a *Full disclosure, that link gives TGO a small kick-back if you buy from it. Varg does an excellent job talking about those points and also makes the statement several times, as @DaveTN observed, that people generally get the level of justice that they can afford. We ALL would do well to keep all of these points in mind before making braggadocious comments, especially in public settings. Words do come back to haunt people. Further, NONE of us should hope to ever have to take another human being's life.

  7. I'm fine with brown gravy where it's supposed to go, like on mashed potatoes with roast beef or pork. Can't put brown gravy on mashed potatoes with Chicken Fried Steak, though. That causes me serious trauma.

  8. I’m sure there are all levels of desire among different folks. The range runs from those that want to shoot someone, to those that don’t, to those that aren’t sure if they could even if they needed to. There isn’t a test you can take. It’s one of the few things you can try to prepare for but you truly don’t know what your reaction will be in those couple of seconds. Those same type feelings run through jurors. As when have seen here and on the news there are those that will think you have acted unlawfully if you shoot even when a weapon is being pulled on you to those that don’t care what you did if you shot a violent criminal. The law isn’t black and white and that’s why we see such differences in court cases. No two cases are the same. In most cases jurors are going to apply the hypothetical “Reasonable Person” in making their decisions. They don’t apply what they think you were thinking; they see themselves as a reasonable person and generally apply what they would have done. Except that now they have had hours or even days to decide what you had a couple of seconds to decide. I don’t ever want to test the jury system. If I’m at trial for a shooting the investigators, the DA, or both think I committed a crime. That’s why deals are made; you don’t know what a jury will do. Years ago when that attorney in Nashville went to trial for murder I saw a news story that said violent felonies that went to trial in Davidson County had an 80% conviction rate. Those are not good odds.

  12. In the couple of utility style fixtures I've done so far, it was really easy to re-wire to bypass the ballast. I wouldn't hesitate to just go that route. It took longer to get the ladder and remove the fixture, than to do the wiring. Plus you get the added bonus of additional power savings by not having to power the ballast. Once thing I do wonder about: Are there any stickers or some standard way of marking the fixture that it has been converted? What happens if you plug in an old style fluorescent bulb into a fixture that has been straight wired?

  17. I recently let go of a few things that were either just holding down space in the safe or distracting me and fragmenting my practice time at the range. I shoot as much now as I ever did. Perhaps more. But my shooting is more focused on getting better with a smaller number of guns. I have been thinking about building something a little more fun out of my old Ruger 10/22 though. Something that would be enjoyable to take to the range and just blister some targets with, cheaply. Magpul stock, TacSol threaded barrel, bipod... Those of you who say you are burned out, do you have an EDC firearm? Do you look at it as a tool or a hobby?

  20. Well, first I like my steak naked, though my wife makes CFS every now and then and I'm obligated to eat it. As to the gravy, white only for S.O.S and on Biscuits, everything else takes brown gravy.

  21. Published July 24, 2018 FoxNews.com The liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals endorsed the right of individuals to carry firearms in public in a ruling Tuesday, striking down a lower court argument that the Constitution only protects that right at home. “Analyzing the text of the Second Amendment and reviewing the relevant history, including founding-era treatises and nineteenth century case law, the panel stated that it was unpersuaded by the county’s and the state’s argument that the Second Amendment only has force within the home,” the ruling states. The case resulted from Hawaii resident George Young being denied twice in 2011 as he sought to carry a handgun. Two of the three judges ruled against a lower court upholding the restriction. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/07/24/liberal-9th-circuit-backs-right-to-carry-firearms-in-public-in-latest-pro-2nd-amendment-ruling.html Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain wrote in his opinion that “for better or for worse, the Second Amendment does protect a right to carry a firearm in public for self-defense.” In his dissent, Judge Richard Clifton said states have “long allowed for extensive regulations of and limitations on the public carry of firearms,” the order said. 9TH CIRCUIT SURPRISES WITH PRO-2ND AMENDMENT DECISION BLOCKING CALIFORNIA AMMO BAN It’s the second time this month that the three-judge panel issued a pro-Second Amendment decision, after backing a lower court’s decision last week to suspend California’s ban on the possession of large magazines. The Second Amendment states: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Activists, supported by the National Rifle Association, have argued that the state's ban on ownership of magazines holding 10 bullets or more is unconstitutional. They won a preliminary injunction by a San Diego district court last year, and a three-judge panel on the Ninth Circuit backed that injunction last week. Based in San Francisco, the Ninth Circuit has a reputation for being one of the nation's most liberal courts. Critics have branded the court the “Nutty 9th” or the “9th Circus,” in part because many of its rulings have been overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. This includes an infamous 2002 ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional because of its use of the phrase “under God.” Republicans have been working to fill vacancies with conservatives, but suffered a setback last week when the White House withdrew the nomination of Ryan Bounds for the Ninth Circuit after realizing it did not have the necessary support in the Senate. He faced criticism over past college writings.

  28. There is a difference in 'fear for one's life' vs. Reasonable fear for one's life. SYG only means one does not have to act to leave the area of confrontation. Andrew Branca discusses this in his book, The Law of Self Defense. There is also the principle of Proportionality. Being pushed down does not by itself warrant a shootable offense punishable by death. Without some more convincing evidence, it doesn't appear the act of shooting was reasonable by only the video evidence I have seen.

  32. Have you tried something besides shooting cans in the creek? Try practical pistol shooting, USPSA and or IDPA. Great bunch of people you're shooting with and it's like plinking with a lot of others. That's where I went when I got to the point you are. That was about 17 years ago. Have been having a lot of fun, met a lot of great people, got a lot better with a gun too.

  34. I still shoot but like you, no real excitement for anything new. I like my go to stuff so much, I've been focusing on improving them (sights, grips, internals) When I see something interesting, I try to determine if I'll use it or into the safe. If it's into the safe (on a common item) I will usually pass. Instead of downsizing, do some trading, you might stumble across the one you missed.
